S.S. Trolley The Most Fun! 2016 saw the introduction of the S.S. Trolley which runs between Port Elgin and Southampton. The trolley offers riders a tour along the beautiful Lake Huron shoreline and through parts of Saugeen Shores. In 2017 the service, which is not offered as public transportation, will run daily in the summer, with pick up/drop off locations along the scenic route. It’s a very affordable way to tour and learn more about our lovely communities.
Info and GPS tracking available at www.sstrolley.ca

Port Elgin Beach
Beaches The beautiful beaches of Saugeen Shores offer miles of sandy coastlines and fresh water as far as the eye can see. Port Elgin and Southampton beaches, on the shoreline of Lake Huron, have been named in a Toronto Star article featuring the best beaches in the world. Each beach offers something different including lighthouse views, beach volleyball games, boardwalks (some accessible), and rare dune ecosystems. Perhaps you’ll opt to sunbath and read a book, build sandcastles, go for a swim or a paddle, rent scuba diving gear or enjoy a breath taking sunset...the possibilities are endless!

The hard part is deciding which trail or path to enjoy first, as we’ve got over 50km worth! They connect MacGregor Point Provincial Park’s trail systems to the community of Port Elgin and further on up to Southampton. Rent snowshoes, cross country skis or bikes. We’re a cycling enthusiast’s dream destination, with on and off road selections to choose from. The multi-use trail options are vast and the varying terrain suitable for different recreational purposes. Route surfaces vary as do the lovely scenic backdrops. Our crown jewel is North Shore Trail which connects our two communities, running along the picturesque shoreline. Another favourite is the Saugeen Rail Trail which meanders through rural vistas and residential areas, joining our communities. Pop into our tourism offices for a trail brochure featuring all options and for information regarding renting bikes, cross country skiis, and snowshoes.

Fishing Lake Huron and the Saugeen River are popular fishing spots, so bring your hip waders or just drop your line from shore. Various fish species call our waters home. We offer boat launches and fish cleaning stations in both communities. In summer, the Chantry Chinook Classic Salmon Derby is Ontario’s largest fishing derby and offers great prizes. A fishing dock for children is located in Port Elgin Harbour, and the Port Elgin and Southampton Libraries offer a Tackle Share Program for kids who don’t have equipment. We can even tell you where to get bait!

Check out Bruce County Playhouse www.brucecountyplayhouse.com
Bruce County Playhouse Our community has summer theatre again, and the home base for the Bruce County Playhouse is the old Town Hall Auditorium in Southampton. The group came to life when a married couple settled in the area, returning to the husbands roots, to raise a family. The
wife had worked in the city as a professional actor/director so wanted to surround herself with a variety of artistic people, in order to bring something to the community. A lot of local talent auditions for the various roles, and in 2017 the troupe will include over 35 performers!
Their productions this year will include: in June—A Walk to Remember (a sight specific theatre presentation), in July— The Ladies Foursome by Norm Foster (a comedic play), and in August—Hockey Mom, Hockey Dad by Michael Melski. Get your tickets early…they go fast!

Shipwreck
PHOTO: LARRY LEPAGE / HMS GENERAL HUNTER PROJECT
HMS General Hunter during the 2004 excavation.
The wreck of the Royal Navy Vessel HMS General Hunter was discovered and excavated on the Southampton Beach between 2001-2004. Hunter fought in the famous War of 1812 “Battle of Lake Erie where it was captured by the U.S. Navy. As an American transport vessel, in August of 1816, it came ashore in a violent storm and ended up buried under the sand. An interpretive plaque marks the shipwreck site on the beach Boardwalk in Southampton. A replica ship and numerous artifacts from the excavations, including a small cannon, are on display at the Bruce County Museum.

Giant Vegetable Weigh-Off PHOTO BY FRAN SANAGAN
It’s kind of a BIG deal! For over 30 years Port Elgin Pumpkinfest has been one of Ontario’s most unique Award winning events. Held the weekend before Thanksgiving, this festival features two GIANT vegetable weigh-offs (2016 saw a new Canadian record at 1877 lbs). Year after year, a two day outdoor car show, entertainment stage, craft show, children’s activities, marketplace and food vendors keep this festival a favourite for the whole family! Mark September 30 and October 1 on your calendar to attend this “family fun, second to none” event.
