The Best Beaches on Lake Huron What is summer without a beach?

From secluded spots to family friendly beaches where the smell of french fries is in the air, Saugeen Shores has a beach to suit all your desires. The Southampton beach is a popular spot with the scenic views of our famed Chantry Island, the long stretch of sandy beachfront and the Southampton beach sidewalk. Head south to Port Elgin main beach, where you will find a buzz of activity in and out of the water. For a more relaxing spot try out Eidt’s Grove or Gobles Grove Beach for its pleasant beach space and lovely views.

Stand Up Paddle Board Want to test out the water with SUP in Port Elgin? With free demos, lessons and rentals available, you too can spend the day on a board enjoying blue skies and soothing waters. Alternately, partake in a group sunset paddle on lovely Lake Huron. You can even try SUP Yoga and SUP Yoga/Pilates Fusion classes. Intrigued? PHOTO BY ELIZABETH ALLAN

Beach Volleyball With some courts set up south of the washrooms on Port Elgin main beach, volleyball is a great way to spend your day. Want to play? Drop-ins welcome; bring your ball and some pals and you can ‘set’ something up. There are seasonal tournaments and recreation leagues to join throughout summer months. If you don’t want to participate with adult co-ed leagues, tween or teen programs, just bring your lawn chair and watch from the sidelines. Boston Pizza is included in the volleyball league and they have open court times at their 2 onsite beach volleyball courts. PHOTO BY ELIZABETH ALLAN

Hydrobikes Hydrobikes don’t require experience and are great fun for all ages from 8 to 80 years. Blaze some new trails on the beautiful aquatic terrain of Lake Huron! You never get wet, unless you want to, and you don’t even need to know how to ride a bike to enjoy this great exercise option. You can even fish from a hydrobike! familytiderentals.com

Paddling With 7 access points throughout Saugeen Shores, paddling the Saugeen River is a favourite pastime for adventurers and a popular place for locals over a long weekend. The official route begins in Hanover and ends 102 km downstream at Southampton’s Denny’s Dam (just before the River meets Lake Huron). The river varies from wide, slow-flowing sections, to stretches with white rapids, making the Saugeen ideal for family canoeing. Call local outfitters to arrange for rentals and shuttles, and pick up a paddling map at the tourist information centres. PHOTOS BY LAURA CROSSETT

Fishing With Lake Huron in our front yard and the Saugeen River flowing around us there are many spots to fish. We are known as a great place for fly fishing. Denny’s Dam area is the place to spot anglers in their hip waders fishing for bass, rainbow trout, and brown trout. If you need a fishing licence, bait or tackle…we’ve got the place for you. There are fish cleaning stations in both Port Elgin and Southampton and a beginners fishing dock in the Port Elgin Harbour as well as a fish hatchery where junior fisherman can cast out a line between May and June. Our libraries are involved in the Tackle Share program, where they can loan children starter fishing equipment upon request. If you like fishing, you’ll want to come out for the Chantry Chinook Classic Salmon Derby (go to www.chantrychinook.com), taking place July 28 to August 12. www.lakehuronfishingclub.com

Accommodation Availability

The Saugeen Shores Chamber of Commerce tracks our accommodation members availability during the peak tourism season. Motels, bed and breakfasts and campgrounds rent by the night, while the majority of private cottages and cottage parks rent by the week. Although we don’t act as a booking agent, give us a call to help shorten your list of possibilities. We suggest that you book early!
