Saugeen River

Paddling With 7 access points throughout Saugeen Shores, paddling the Saugeen River is a favourite pastime for adventurers and a popular place for locals over a long weekend. The official route begins in Hanover and ends 102 km downstream at Southampton’s Denny’s Dam (just before the River meets Lake Huron). The river varies from wide, slow-flowing sections, to stretches with white rapids, making the Saugeen ideal for family canoeing. Call local outfitters for rentals and shuttles, and pick up paddling maps at the Visitors Centre.

Dunes

Our coastal dunes are widely considered to be among the rarest and most fragile ecosystem in Canada. The “Chantry Dunes” in Southampton are one of the first community-driven dune conservation projects in Ontario. Dune grass protects from sand erosion that could negatively affect our beaches and ecosystem.

Fishing With Lake Huron in our front yard and the Saugeen River flowing around us there are many spots to try out. We are known as a great place for fly fishing. In the fall Denny’s Dam is the place to spot anglers in their hip waders fishing for bass, pike, rainbow and brown trout. A new dock is now in place there to help all that use the area.

Our shoreline becomes host to many birds from the photogenic to the endangered. We have been home to endangered Piping Plovers. Chantry Island has been a Federal Bird Sanctuary since 1957 as many migratory birds flock and nest there.

Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing The Bruce County weather brings no shortage of snow, but luckily for us we have found many ways to enjoy it. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing are popular on the Saugeen Rail Trail, which runs inland between Port Elgin and Southampton. Another favourite route is Biener’s Bush Trail and Bush Line Trail which connect the 10th Concession to Market Street. Gore Drain Trail and Rotary Way Trail link Port Elgin to MacGregor Point Provincial Park, where there are a multitude of trails. Alternately, pick another of our numerous trails to explore!

Our trails are perfect for snowshoeing, cross country skiing and winter hiking. Pick up trail brochures at the Visitors Centres (see page 7)

We know how to play here in the winter!

Snowmobiling Oh Winter, you don’t scare us. Bruce County has over 1000km of sledding trails, and is a perfect way to get around the outskirts of town. You can access OFSC District 9 trails via the east edge of Port Elgin and Southampton. Our Tourism offices and gas stations have local snowmobile maps.

Curling

Skating

We have two rinks; one at The Coliseum in Southampton and the other located at Mill Creek Road and Gustavus Street in Port Elgin. Curling is a game gaining some traction in Saugeen Shores. These two clubs have had success with eight enders at international Bonspiels as well as competitions closer to home. Both clubs offer lessons and open days where anyone is invited to hone and test out their skills.

Looking for some family fun on a winter weekend? In the winter, the Southampton Coliseum offers public skating most weekends and The Plex in Port Elgin is always a hive of activity with public skating and hockey games. Want a little more adventure? Try going to MacGregor Point Provincial Park, off Bruce Road 33. It offers a picturesque outdoor skating loop through the forest as well as a separate rink pad.

Saugeen First Nation Our neighbours to the north, Saugeen First Nation #29, have a cultural community that is inviting to anyone who visits. One of the area’s best kept secrets is the outdoor limestone Amphitheatre and gardens. Stone stairways, walkways and terraced gardens overlook the Saugeen River. Currently undergoing unique stonework renovations, the Amphitheatre and gardens are a popular wedding destination and a lovely spot for a short hike and photos. The Amphitheatre is located along Highway 21 in Saugeen First Nation #29. Watch for the sign at the entrance to the parking lot on the south side of the highway. There is no admission fee but donations are appreciated. Catch a spectacular fireworks show here in May and be sure not to miss the Pow Wow held August 13th and 14th. Catch a glimpse of Ojibway culture as the Saugeen First Nation showcase the culture of Canada’s native people. PHOTO BY DAVE NICHOLSON PHOTOS BY PETER MCNEICE

Sunset Piper The sunset piper pipes down the sun at the main beach in Southampton on Fridays nights in summer. It’s a sight to see and a tradition many enjoy. The amazing sunsets, the beach, Lake Huron and the piper dressed in traditional garb all make for a great photo op! Get yourself an ice cream and come on down to this wonderful way to end your day.

Canadian Big Band Celebration SEPTEMBER 16TH-18TH

The Canadian Big Band Celebration is in its 22nd year. This weekend event is a swinging good time that begins on a Friday night where one can hop from restaurants to lounges and other venues around Saugeen Shores and be entertained by some great musicians and vocalists. The Saturday is known as the “Big Event”, and it pays homage to the counties great dance pavilions that operated from the 1920s – 1960s, featuring great music from those memorable times and more. Don’t forget the Jazz Brunch that follows on the Sunday, with great music and great food. PHOTO BY KERRY JARVIS

Fireworks

This annual July weekend event features coastline exhibits, kids activities, BBQs and even cardboard boat races! Learn about the rich history of the shoreline and its surrounding areas. Stay for the nightly entertainment, wake up to a pancake breakfast and experience the fish fry with the Marine Heritage community. Be sure to catch this festival at Pioneer Park in Southampton.

Spend your summer long weekends here. Catch the Fireworks at the Saugeen First Nation in May. Southampton holds the annual Canada Day Fireworks by the Big Flag. Kiss your summer goodbye, by watching the Labour Day Weekend Fireworks at Port Elgin Main Beach with your lawn chair and glow sticks!

Cruisers Cruise Nites Step back in time and enjoy the sun shining down on some classic cars, a perfect way to throw back on this Thursday night tradition. Dogs Bring your furkid(s) to Saugeen Shores! Our 13 acre off leash Dog Park located in Port Elgin, on Lehnen Street is open daily from dawn to dusk. Leashed dogs are allowed north of the Port Elgin Harbour at North Shore Park. This park includes a rocky beach area where dogs are allowed to swim, and benches for you to relax on. There are a few doggy day cares in town, various veterinary services and boarding, even canine training classes for those cute but pesky puppies.
