Harbour Looking for a boat launch? Just head down to our harbour in Port Elgin and the Chesley Street launch in Southampton. The Port Elgin harbour offers transient slips and seasonal docking and moorings, fuel, electricity, washrooms, restaurants and a gorgeous, sandy beach. To enter the harbour, Logie’s Rock serves

as a reference point. It is marked by a light buoy and lies 2 miles west-northwest of Port Elgin. When entering the harbour it is important to stay within the buoyed channel. Range markers with green lights will guide you. Harbour staff monitor VHF channel 68. Harbour season usually runs from the 1st of May until the end of October.

Beaches PHOTOS BY PETER MCNEICE

Dunes Our coastal dunes are widely considered to be among the rarest and most fragile ecosystem in Canada, the “Chantry Dunes” of Southampton were one of the first community-driven dune conservation projects in Ontario. Dune grass is important to our beach systems as it protects from sand erosion that could negatively affect our beaches and ecosystem. 12

What is summer without a beach? Luckily for us we’ve got many of them. From secluded spots to tan with your friends to family friendly beaches where the smell of French fries is always in the air, Saugeen Shores is the destination for you Coppertone fanatics. The Southampton Beach is a popular spot with the scenic views of our famed Chantry Island and lovely boardwalk. Head South to Port Elgin Main Beach, where you will find a buzz of activity in and out of the water. For a more relaxing spot try out Eidt’s Grove or Gobles Grove for its pleasant beach space and lovely views. Take a look at our maps—where there is shoreline there is most likely a place for you to enjoy.

Fishing

PHOTO FROM PETER MCNEICE

With Lake Huron in our front yard and the Saugeen River flowing around us there are many spots to try out. We are known as a great place for fly fishing, and in the fall Dennys Dam is the place to spot anglers in their hip waders fishing for bass, pike, rainbow and brown trout, with a new dock to help all that use the area. There are fish cleaning stations in both Port Elgin and Southampton and a beginners fishing dock in the Port Elgin Harbour as well as a fish hatchery where junior fisherman can cast out a line between May and June. Our libraries are involved in the Tackle Share program, where they can loan children starter fishing equipment upon request.

Trail and Map guides are available at our tourist information offices.

What is Pickleball you say? Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in North America, and Saugeen Shores has many courts where you can find out what it’s all about! With the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, and a net and rules similar to tennis, this sport is popular with locals and has the highest turnout of participants at our Senior Games. Interested? Drop-in time slots available! PHOTO BY PETER MCNEICE

Trails With over 50 kilometers of trails in Saugeen Shores, there are an ample amount of places to run, bike, hike, ski and snowshoe on our yearround trails. Grab a map from our tourism offices or outdoor kiosks and find the best way to get around. These multi-use trails are paved, stone dust and some are covered in wood chips. With lakeside views and more expert terrain available our trail systems are a great way to tour the area. Saugeen Shores 2015

Birding Our shoreline becomes host to many birds from the photogenic to the endangered. Last year we were home to a pair of endangered Piping Plovers and their four offspring. Our famed Chantry Island has been a Federal Bird Sanctuary since 1957 as many migratory birds flock and nest there. MacGregor Point Provincial Park

holds The Huron Fringe Birding Festival during the last two weekends in May, bringing explorers and naturalists to our area. So bring your Tilly hat and your long lensed camera and catch a glimpse of our feathered friends, or head to the beach and get a basket of fries and the birds will come to you.

Picnic Spots Saugeen Shores has plenty of public park space where you will want to bring a blanket and your favourite munchies and have an old fashioned picnic. J.H. Robertson Sports Field is known for its soccer pitches but there are public washroom access and a terrific playground. There are local restaurants nearby so if you don’t feel like cooking you can grab some take out and pass it off as your own. Nodwell Park in Port Elgin has a paved loop perfect for those practicing their biking and roller blading skills. With park space and benches this is the place to go if you have some energy to spend. 22

Fairy Lake in Southampton has beautiful views to offer. Take a walk around the lake and enjoy the local wildlife. Showcase your talents at Rotary Pavilion during the week or let the professionals take over on Sunday nights where our weekly bandshell concerts are held in the summer. We are very proud to have the only accessible park of its size in Bruce County. Located in Southampton at Scott and Victoria Street, within Jubilee Park this space showcases the beautiful Bruce Power Sensory Gardens. Jubilee Park also includes accessible washrooms and a ball diamond with ample pathways and parking.

Curling We have two rinks; one at The Coliseum in Southampton and the other located on Mill Creek Road and Gustavus Street in Port Elgin. Curling is a game gaining some traction in Saugeen Shores. These two clubs have had success with eight enders at international Bonspiels as well as competitions closer to home. Both clubs offer lessons and open days where anyone is invited to hone and test out their skills.

Skating Looking for some family fun on a winter weekend? Why not go to a public skate at our two arenas. The Southampton Coliseum offers public skating most weekends and The Plex in Port Elgin is always a hive of activity with public skating and hockey games. Want a little more adventure? Try going to MacGregor Point Provincial Park, off Bruce Rd. 33. It offers a picturesque outdoor skating loop through the forest as well as a separate rink pad.

Snowmobiling Oh Winter, you don’t scare us. Bruce County has over 1000km of sledding trails, and is a perfect way to get around the outskirts of town. You can access OFSC District trails via the east edge of Port Elgin and Southampton. Our Tourism offices and gas stations have local snowmobile maps.

Cross Country Skiing The Bruce County weather brings no shortage of snow, but luckily for us we have found many ways to enjoy it. Cross country trails are found on the Saugeen Rail Trail which runs inland with some tree cover. Don’t forget the North Shore Trail which runs lakeside. Both run between Southampton and Port Elgin. Another route is Beiner’s Bush Trail which connects the 10th Concession to Market Street in Port Elgin and MacGregor Point Provincial Park (which has even more trails) off Bruce County Road 33.

Saugeen First Nation Our neighbors to the north, the Saugeen First Nation #29, have a cultural community that is inviting to anyone who visits. One of the area’s best kept secrets is the outdoor limestone Amphitheatre and gardens. Stone stairways, walkways and terraced gardens overlook the Saugeen River. Currently undergoing unique stonework renovations, the Amphitheatre and gardens are a popular wedding destination and a lovely spot for a short hike. The Amphitheatre is located along Highway 21 in Saugeen First Nation #29. Watch for the the sign at the entrance to the parking lot on the south side of the highway. There is no admission fee but donations are appreciated. Catch a spectacular fireworks show on May 17th and be sure not to miss the Pow Wow held August 8th and 9th.
