Fire Safety Doesn’t Take A Holiday Saugeen Shores is well known for its great beaches and as a great place to take your vacations, but Fire Safety doesn’t take a holiday! When it comes to Emergency Services the Town of Saugeen Shores is leading the way. You will find a very progressive Volunteer Fire Department with 55 members responding from 2 fire stations, one located in Southampton and the other located in Port Elgin. The volunteer firefighters take pride in their continuous training that enables them to deliver the very best service to residents and visitors in their time of need. The strength of our department lies in our dedicated and 2012 Junior Firefighters experienced volunteer firefighters and officers. The Saugeen Shores Fire Department has the lowest staff “turn over” rate of all volunteer fire departments in Canada and has not needed to hire and train new firefighters in more than 5 years. The Public Education and Prevention division conducts building inspections. Public Education programs are delivered through schools, clubs and businesses. Our Junior Firefighters program allows forty children to spend one evening a week for 6 weeks at the fire stations learning fire service and safety. We offer fire extinguisher training for all workplaces in Saugeen Shores. Drop by one of the Fire Stations for a tour of the hall and fire trucks.

Saugeen Shores has a delightful and refreshing combination of urban and rural lifestyles, making the healthy balance of work and life a reality rather than a mere dream. Located on Lake Huron, in Bruce County, Saugeen Shores is family-friendly, with its community events, recreational and fitness facilities, trails, parks, and beautiful beaches. There is one secondary and three elementary schools in Saugeen Shores, plus one Catholic elementary school. Georgian College’s Owen Sound campus is just a short drive away. Nineteen churches, representing many denominations, serve the municipality’s spiritual needs.
The hospital in Southampton is part of the Grey Bruce Health Services’ network of hospitals in Bruce and Grey Counties. In addition to its full time emergency department the hospital houses 16 inpatient beds, and offers many outpatient services. Medical clinics in Port Elgin and Southampton serve several physicians, which provide inpatient care and staff the emergency department year round. SAUGEEN SHORES COMMUNITY PROFILE CONTINUED Arts, culture and heritage have a strong presence in the community, as evident by the period architecture, local museum, art school and gallery with many cultural events. From a business perspective, the community is within an easy drive of major Canadian and U.S. markets, and has a variety of readily-available commercial and industrial spaces. Add to that a skilled workforce, fair taxes, friendly people, a relaxed lifestyle, plus affordable real estate, Saugeen Shores is an irresistible combination.
The Chantry Island Lighthouse grown to include a mill, shops, churches, schools and roads, with a population of over 630. Early industries included a steam sawmill, foundry and woolen mill. In 1873, the railway arrived, and Port Elgin products traveled out into the world. In 1999, these three municipalities amalgamated to form the Town of Saugeen Shores, population 12,000. The amalgamation created a diverse community with common historic and cultural ties, with a strong economic base. Energy, tourism, small business and agriculture are the local economy’s cornerstones.

A Brief History Saugeen Shores traces its history back to 1847 when government agents arrived to survey land at the Saugeen River’s mouth. Southampton was Ontario’s northernmost lake port, and the first port on the Bruce Coast. By 1852 over 12 families lived there, sustained by the thriving fishery. By 1857 there were 130 homes, six shops, two hotels, five warehouses, a planing mill, a gristmill and a steam sawmill. In 1859, the Chantry Island lighthouse was completed and warned sailors of the island’s dangerous shoals. Post and customs offices assured the village’s growth, becoming a town in 1904.
Recreation AND Lifestyle With its sandy shoreline, pristine waters and wooded areas, Saugeen Shores is a virtual paradise. The continually growing trail systems are popular with outdoor enthusiasts. Numerous trails are spread throughout Bruce and Grey Counties with the Bruce Trail traversing the length of the scenic Bruce Peninsula. A paved path hugs the scenic shoreline between Port Elgin and Southampton providing a safe pedestrian route. MacGregor Point Provincial Park is an all-season destination for camping, hiking, swimming, wildlife and bird watching. In winter, visitors camp in yurts, cross-country ski, and enjoy skating on the frozen loop.
Saugeen Township’s first settler, Alexander Wallace, arrived in 1851. The Municipal Offices, Community Complex, Police Department and Bruce County Library are also here. Saugeen Shores and Ontario’s energy sector have a longstanding relationship through the region’s largest employer, Bruce Power. It is the core of the municipality’s economic base, considering more than a third of its 4000 employees reside in Saugeen Shores. Quaint Southampton Shops downtown Port Elgin. Agriculture and Manufacturing
Saugeen Shores is unique with its two distinct urban cores. Quaint Southampton resembles a turn-of-the-century fishing village with its variety of retail boutiques, restaurants and gift shops. Port Elgin’s eclectic main street features varied retail, gift shops, restaurants, grocery stores, and boutiques.
Historically, agriculture is the longest standing economic practice in the region. Intensive livestock operations include beef and dairy, cattle and hogs. Bruce County beef is famous throughout the country. Two-thirds of the land within Saugeen Shores is excellent for cash crops. The Saugeen Shores PLAY Network is a branch of the regional PLAY Bruce Grey Network. The regional group is led by municipal representatives, who share their passion for play and to increase physical activity. PLAY Bruce Grey offers two annual challenges, with a variety of activities across the region of Bruce Grey counties. Centennial Pool
The pool encourages all swimmers to swim with a buddy. Those with serious medical conditions should be accompanied by an individual who is knowledgeable of their condition and responsible for their direct supervision
General Information Centennial Pool, located at Saugeen District Secondary School, is owned and operated by the Town of Saugeen Shores. This five lane, 25m lap pool maintains a temperature of 84º F.
Direct Supervision: Being within arm’s reach at all times. When directly supervising children, there is a maximum of two children, under the age of 9 per guardian.

Swim Test: Two widths of a recognizable stroke, without stopping and one minute of treading water. Change Rooms Children 7 years of age or older are required to use the change room designed for their gender. If this is not suitable, please see facility staff for appropriate accommodation.
Accessibility Centennial Pool has an access ramp to the lobby, from the main school entrance. There are steps for access to the pool tank. Admittance Requirements Children 6 years of age and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is at least 16 years of age, and responsible for their direct supervision.
Swimming Lessons Centennial Pool offers Red Cross and Lifesaving Swimming classes. All classes are taught by a certified Red Cross / Lifesaving Society Instructor. Swimming lessons are progressively evaluated and participants who complete all of the required skills will receive a badge or sticker. If you should have questions about your child’s progress please talk with the Deck
Children 7 – 9 years of age must pass a facility swim test or be accompanied by a parent or guardian, who is at least 16 years of age, and responsible for their direct supervision.

Please remove shoes before entering the pool deck, to comply with the Health Regulations. The Centennial Pool will continue to accommodate swimming needs – if you are not seeing what you are looking for please let pool staff know. Want To Be A Lifeguard? Aquatics can be a rewarding part time job. It combines leadership with skill and dedication, safety and fun. If you think this might be the right job for you, talk with the Aquatics Supervisor or pick up a “How to be a Lifeguard/Instructor” brochure, at Centennial Pool. Regular Programming For Centennial Pool Public Swim – Pool toys and floatation aids are allowed in the shallow end. Please check with the lifeguard on duty for approval. Family Swim – Geared to parents with young children, seniors and patrons with special needs. Lane Swim Morning/Noon/Night – Available for patrons 13 years of age or older, lanes are divided into slow, medium and fast lanes. Aqua Fit Class - These are high energy, low impact fitness classes and allows participates to work at their own pace/ ability.

Saugeen Shores Off Leash Dog Park Location: 813 Lehnen Street North of the Port Elgin Cemetery A Park for Socializing and Interaction. Just over 7 acres for you and your dog to enjoy, fully fenced. Park rules are posted on site. Dogs must be licensed with the Town, and wearing a visible dog tag at all times. Gated section for small breeds/puppies.
Bandshell Concerts The place to be on a Sunday night, in the summertime, starting at 7pm, is one of the Bandshell Concerts. Saugeen Shores offers lovely settings for these; the Port Elgin Emmett McGrath Pavillion on the main beach and the Southampton Fairy Lake Bandshell at the corner of High and Victoria Streets. Dedicated Tree Program The Town of Saugeen Shores is happy to offer a Dedicated Tree Program to tourists and residents of Saugeen Shores. This program provides civic-minded individuals the opportunity to purchase trees that provide for rest and relaxation of park visitors and pedestrians, but also represent a dedication or recognition of individuals in a unique and lasting manner. Trees (deciduous and/ or coniferous) are available for purchase, and include a plaque to recognize the dedication. Location, including soil arrangement, will be considered when determining the most suitable location for the tree. The Department of Community Services will maintain a dedicated tree in the same manner as other park trees. For details on this program, please contact Community Services, 519-832-2008.
Health and Wellness Fair
Styrofoam Recycling Only “Packaging Styrofoam” in clear plastic bags will be accepted at the Landfill Site. The Landfill does not recycle peanuts, food containers, pink/blue or black construction styrofoam. Fluorescent Bulb Recycling Household 4 ft. fluorescent tubes and bulbs are now being accepted at the Southampton Landfill. The tubes/bulbs are taken to a facility where mercury and other hazardous chemicals are properly disposed of. Cardboard Recycling Depots Cardboard recycling depots are located at: 1. The Port Elgin Sewage Treatment Plant on Lehnen St. 2. Concession 6 at Guyers Drive (Public Works Garage) 3. The Southampton Landfill Site on the 14th Concession Yard Composters Composters are available at the Municipal Office for residents of Saugeen Shores. Compost Site Yard waste is accepted at the Compost Site located on Concession 14 beside the Southampton Landfill. Brush is not accepted at the Compost Site.

Waste Diversion Programs
Mattress and Box Spring Recycling Mattresses and box springs will only be accepted through this program at the Landfill. There is a fee for these individual items. Battery Recycling Program Your household batteries can be dropped off at the Landfill Site, Municipal Office, or the Public Libraries in Port Elgin or Southampton. You can also recycle vehicle batteries at the Landfill Site. Ontario Tire Stewardship Tires can be brought to the site during regular Landfill hours at NO COST. Freon Units Freon units such as air conditioners, fridges, freezers, water coolers and dehumidifiers WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED at the Southampton Landfill unless certified as Freon-free and tagged.

Before you dig, think about what services might be buried in the ground because what you can’t see can hurt you.
