water BEACHES AND MORE The beautiful beaches of Saugeen Shores offer sandy coastlines galore and fresh water as far as the eye can see. Port Elgin and Southampton beaches, on the shoreline of Lake Huron, were recently named in a Toronto Star article featuring the best beaches in the world. If you’re looking for more secluded beach settings…head to Gobles Grove or Eidt’s Grove to unwind. Each beach area offers something different; including lighthouse views, beach volleyball games, boardwalks and rare dune ecosystems. Perhaps you’ll opt to just sunbath and read a book, build sandcastles, go for a swim, jog the scenic shores, rent scuba diving gear, charter a sailboat, enjoy a breath taking sunset…the possibilities are endless!

Dispensers allow you to feed the wildlife; usually carp, turtles, swans, ducks and geese. Access is via the corner at Victoria and High Street. The new Rotary Fairy Lake Pavilion is home to Sunday night concerts in summer.

Fishing Lake Huron and the Saugeen River are popular fishing spots. Take a fishing boat charter, pull on your hip waders or just drop your line from shore. Various fish species call our waters home. We offer boat launches and fish cleaning stations in both communities. In summer, the Chantry Chinook Classic Salmon Derby is Ontario’s largest fishing derby and offers great prizes. Even the kids can get in on the action. A fishing dock for children is located in Port Elgin Harbour, and the Port Elgin and Southampton Libraries offer a Tackle Share Program for kids who don’t have equipment. We can even tell you where to get bait!

We’ve got a treasure trove of wonderful outdoor spaces and recreational opportunities for all seasons.

The Boardwalk For over 100 years the boardwalk in Southampton has remained a favourite location from which to catch the setting sun. This paved pathway runs along the beach from Millard Boulevard to Beach Street. Whether you choose to relax on one of the many benches that line its length or you opt to run the route, you’ll enjoy lovely views of the beach, Chantry Island Lighthouse and Lake Huron. Playground equipment and washrooms can also be found along the way.
Our varying terrain selections can accommodate your desires. The tourism offices can supply trail and road maps. If you didn’t bring your bicycle, stop at the local bike shop for rentals. Your choice of routes will differ whether you want a leisurely pedal for the whole family or if you crave a solitary road ride to get your blood pumping. North Shore Trail and Saugeen Rail Trail offer smoother outings, while Biener’s Bush Trail is more rugged. Teens love the BMX Track and Skate Park. Nodwell Park’s paved loop is suitable for the wee ones. For a nice long jaunt further afield try the various County options.

Jack Frost loves it here! Winter activities abound‌ snowshoeing, hockey games, snowman building, making snow angels, tobogganing, catching snowflakes on your tongue, snowball fights, even ice fishing if weather conditions permit. Scenic winter landscapes can be gorgeous‌nothing like the sun sinking towards the frozen lake!
From October to March bring your skates along. Indoor venues are The Coliseum in Southampton, off Highway 21 and The Plex in Port Elgin, off Tomlinson Drive. MacGregor Point Provincial Park, off Bruce County Road 33, offers an outdoor skating loop through the forest and separate rink pad; when weather permits.

Cross Country Skiing Ski locales include Saugeen Rail Trail and North Shore Trail which both run between Southampton and Port Elgin, one along the lake the other inland. Biener’s Bush Trail connects the 10th Concession to Market Street in Port Elgin and MacGregor Point Provincial Park off Bruce County Road 33 is home to a variety of trails. These scenic settings allow you to revel in nature’s splendor. Pop into our tourism offices for trail maps.
Snowmobiling We usually see an abundance of lake effect snow here. Bruce County has 1000+km of sledding trails, and Southampton has a Snowmobile Club. Access OFSC District 9 trails via the East edge of Port Elgin or Southampton. Try tourism offices or gas stations for snowmobile maps.

Shipwreck A major Lake Huron storm pushed the Hunter ashore and wrecked it on a remote Canadian beach on August 19, 1816, according to a letter written by U.S. Army General Alexander Macomb to the U.S. Secretary of War. The resting place of this shipwreck, marked by an interpretive plaque, located along The Boardwalk below the beachfront in Southampton, will be of interest to many. Previous archeological digs unearthed some interesting artifacts, which are now housed at the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre.
Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre Artifacts, collections, exhibits and archives depicting the development of our community and Bruce County, its people, marine heritage and glorious past, are all at the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre. Head here to Be the Dinosaur, check out Bevan’s General Store, soak in First Nations Cultural Demonstrations, experience Reptiles Alive or Lego Fridays‌ and so much more. hantry Island C Lighthouse Tours Experience a two hour guided excursion to the 150+ year old Imperial Lighthouse (106 steps to the top), restored keepers quarters and gardens. Learn about the Island’s history and light caretakers and see historical photos! Chantry is also a Federal Bird Sanctuary— visitation is controlled via seasonal tours. For safety, hiking footwear is a must and children must be 4’ tall. You’ll board the Peerless II near Chantry Island Tour base office, off Saugeen Street at the Mouth of the Saugeen River. Prebooking is advised. PHOTO BY PETER MCNEICE
Marine Navigational Aids Chantry Island was voted “Canada’s Top Hidden Travel Gem” in the Canadian Tourism Commissions 2010 online Locals Know campaign. It’s a prominent sight and area attraction and the solar powered beam emanating from its lighthouse is an important navigational aid for boaters. The two range lights, at the mouth of the Saugeen River and further inland, align to show those on the water where the route of safe passage is into the River channel. You can still hear the blast of the foghorn on occasion!
History Everywhere! If you like old homes, buildings and sites then head to the tourism offices for a historic walking and driving tour brochure. This publication allows you to pick and choose your preferred sights for a self-guided walk or drive. Locations of historical significance are identified, with a description, location information and accompanying map. Scattered throughout our community, you’ll also come across various historical markers and interpretive plaques. Places of interest might include the Walker House in Southampton, the former Indian Village in Port Elgin or the previous Dunblane Presbyterian Church on The River Road. 24

Historic Old Town Hall Locals know this jewel as the old town hall building. This colossal landmark sits in the midst of the downtown core of Southampton, at High Street and Highway 21. In the past a hose tower, the town offices, a court, jail cells and more have all been found here. The Southampton Visitors’ Centre and the Gallery, shop and office areas of the Southampton Art School are current tenants. Last year the building underwent extensive exterior structural and facade restoration. With this work complete, this treasured iconic edifice will stand strong for years to come, remaining a part of our living history. Saugeen Shores 2014 Visitors Guide | visitsaugeenshores.ca

Cruisers Cruise Nites Earmark Thursdays nights in June, July and August for Cruisers Cruise Nites, on Millard Boulevard. This is the place to check out a variety of antique, custom and classic cars. Mr. Cruiser (a.k.a. Gary Brown) plays as weekly host at this affair, which offers an evening full of nostalgia and fun. Stroll down memory lane while listening to classic rock played by Joseph J. Entertainment. All ages come out for this ritual which raises money through 50/50 draws and car entry donations; all going to our local hospital. Consider bringing up your prized automobile of old to showcase with the array of other stellar rides! Saugeen Shores 2014 Visitors Guide | visitsaugeenshores.ca

Bandshell Concerts Sundays, from the end of June to the end of August head out to Bandshell Concerts at Rotary Fairy Lake Pavilion in Southampton and Emmett McGrath Pavilion at the main beach in Port Elgin. Locals and visitors love these! With various musical performers covering a multitude of musical genres, this is a great activity to behold. Sunset Piper
The sunset piper pipes down the sun at the main beach in Southampton on Fridays nights in summer. It’s a sight to see and a tradition many enjoy. The amazing sunsets, the beach, Lake Huron and the piper dressed in traditional garb all make for a great photo op! Get yourself an ice cream and come on down to this wonderful way to end your day.
