JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Our strength lies in our partnership and passion to focus on accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. Together we will do the greatest good, for the largest number of people, in the shortest period of time.

28TH ANNUAL
DREAM GALA SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2017 T H E W ES T I N S E AT T L E
TONIGHT IS SPECIAL… Special because of the time, talent, and treasures that have come from so many: our sponsors, patrons, donors, volunteers, and staff. Special because of our extraordinary honoree, JTM Construction, and our very special partnership with them. Most importantly, tonight is special because of all of you. Thank you for being here, at the 28th Annual JDRF Dream Gala. Tonight we are reminded of our responsibility and opportunity to have an impact on the world around us. With your help, we will fuel the research that not only improves the lives of millions of people afflicted with type one diabetes (T1D), but also will one day lead to a cure. And now, more than ever, that cure is within reach. People with T1D benefit from JDRF-funded innovations, made possible with your donations and partnership. The work to create transformational therapies to help people living with T1D cannot be allowed to stop because dedicated researchers lack funds. Laboratory studies that are unlocking the mysteries of T1D and accelerating progress toward a cure and prevention must continue. Earlier this year, we attended a presentation highlighting groundbreaking research. Dr. Ake Lernmark, Professor of Diabetes Research at the Lund University and the Skåne University Hospital SUS in Malmö, Sweden, began with a statement that really hit home: IF YOU THINK RESEARCH IS EXPENSIVE, TRY DISEASE. We want this to hit home with you as well. This is why we are all here tonight. So put on your dancing shoes, bring your generosity, and let’s get down tonight and rid our world of this insidious disease once and for all. Dream On.

DEAR FRIENDS, On behalf of the JDRF International Board of Directors and the entire JDRF family, we congratulate the JDRF Seattle Guild on your 28th Annual JDRF Dream Gala. It is our pleasure to recognize and celebrate this year’s Gala Honoree, JTM Construction, for all they have done and continue to do to help us achieve our vision of a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D). Thanks to devoted champions like JTM Construction, JDRF continues to be the leader in T1D research driving critical advances in new therapies. We also want to congratulate and thank Event Chairs, Lori Noto and Sean Barnes, for your dedication to making tonight such a special evening for everyone. This night could not happen without you and the commitment of all who have worked hard to make this year’s event a success. JDRF works every day to change the reality of this disease for millions of people – and to prevent anyone else from ever knowing it – by funding research, advocating for government support of research and new therapies, ensuring new therapies come to market and connecting and engaging the T1D community. Thanks to your efforts and support of JDRF, we will turn Type One into Type None. Please accept our deepest gratitude for your support tonight and for all that you do for JDRF. Sincerely,
DEREK K. RAPP President & Chief Executive Officer

ARTIFICIAL PANCREAS WINS FDA APPROVAL A Welcome Step Forward Last September the major announcement of the firstever approved artificial pancreas (AP) system gave hope to millions in the T1D community. The device, which is expected to be on the market this year, utilizes computer algorithms to learn what an individual’s insulin needs are and to automatically act to minimize both potentially dangerous high and low glucose levels. Since 2006 JDRF has been a key player in advancing the development of AP systems. With the goal of a completely automated AP system that very closely replicates the healthy pancreas, JDRF continues to push for improved sensing technology, fasting acting insulin and better ways to advance the development of AP systems. In a statement, Aaron Kowalski, Chief Mission Officer for JDRF, said until there’s a cure for type 1 diabetes, “I know that the artificial pancreas will change many lives for the better.” Thanks to your generous support JDRF is accelerating life-transforming breakthroughs in artificial pancreas research.

MELVYN POLL JULY 15, 1941– JANUARY 12, 2017 Our dear friend, guild member and ardent supporter of diabetes research died on January 12, 2017 at the age of 75. Melvyn Poll was a founding member of the JDRF Seattle Guild 28 years ago. A big-hearted and passionate volunteer for many years, he and his his wife Rosalind chaired the Dream Gala and each year co-hosted the popular guild dinner live auction item. In 1999, he hosted a well-received Leider evening of song as a benefit for the Seattle Guild; it was the debut vocal recital in the Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall. Mel was a tenor who sang with operas in New York, Europe, Israel and Seattle. He frequently sang with the Seattle Symphony and guided young students in his role as regional chair for the Metropolitan National Council Auditions. Many of us enjoyed his classic rendition of the national anthem at UW Husky football games for the past five seasons, an experience he described as the highpoint of his career. Gregarious. Friendly. Funny. Loving. A man of great wit, talent and generosity, Melvyn was a beloved friend of JDRF, family man and wonderful friend to our community. He is missed.

DEAR SUPPORTERS OF JDRF, Welcome to the 28th Annual Dream Gala “dance dance dance FOR A CURE.” JTM Construction is honored to be the recipient of the 2017 Living & Giving Award. We appreciate the opportunity to be part of this evening’s fundraising efforts and to help support JDRF-funded research that is moving us ever closer to a world without type 1 diabetes. JTM Construction is a commercial contractor. Construction is a relatively simple business: Create A Plan, Then Build Your Plan. There is nothing simple about science and finding a cure for a disease, especially one as complex as type 1 diabetes. JDRF’s mission is to treat, prevent, and ultimately find a cure for this disease by raising funds for research. That is what our job here tonight is – to raise funds to help find a cure. Each of us has already started that task by being here. Now let’s really help by making tonight one of the most successful nights in the JDRF Seattle Guild’s 28 years. JDRF-funded research focuses on type 1 diabetes at every stage: stopping its progression in people who are newly diagnosed, reversing it in those who have lived with the disease for years, and preventing the disease for at-risk people in future generations. Your invaluable support directly impacts the lives of millions affected by type 1 diabetes. Thank you all for being here tonight and let’s go raise some money and beat this disease!

WE’RE SO EXCITED TO WELCOME
THE POINTER SISTERS
The Pointer Sisters have a renown career that spans more than four decades and several musical genres. Whether singing country, R&B or pop music, the group’s catchy chart-topping hits have reached fans of every generation through records, movies, music videos, and more. The sisters earned a presence on Billboard’s pop singles chart from the release of their very first album in 1973. Their next album included “Fairytale,” a country-western tune that hit big on both country and pop charts. The Pointer Sisters became the first black female group to perform at Nashville’s famous Grand Ole Opry. “Fairytale” won the sisters their first Grammy, the 1974 award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group. The Pointer Sisters went on to produce top R&B hits and hit the big screen in 1976, joining Richard Pryor in Car Wash. By the early ‘80s, the sisters had crossed over into rock ‘n’ roll. In 1983, they released their best-selling and most famous album, Break Out, which eventually went triple-platinum. The Pointer Sisters landed all over MTV; “Jump (for My Love),” “I’m So Excited,” and “Neutron Dance,” became iconic 80s pop songs. The success of the album earned the sisters two more Grammy Awards — they were the first all-female group to win the Best Vocal by a Duo or Group (for “Jump”) for the pop category, just as they had been for the country category a decade earlier–and Best Vocal Arrangement (for “Automatic”) and two American Music Awards. In the past few decades, the group has continued to produce albums, appear on television, tour worldwide, and receive countless honors and awards.

Cayuse Vineyards Wine and Mailing List Access Coveted Access to Ageworthy Wines “Do whatever it takes to get your hands on a few of these gems,” advised Jay Miller, formerly of The Wine Advocate. Tonight, you will take home two supersized bottles of critically-acclaimed Cayuse red, AND bypass the years-long wait list to get on the winery’s mailing list – that means instant access to some of the most soughtafter wines! The Walla Walla Valley has proven to be ideally suited to growing red Rhône varieties, with no small part thanks to Cayuse vigneron Christophe Baron’s success there. Twenty years ago, the Frenchman happened upon a field of softball-sized stones and recognized the land’s potential for growing wine grapes. Today, Cayuse has expanded to five biodynamic vineyards over 60 acres; thanks to that rocky soil, the vines still have a very low yield and produce wine grapes of beautiful concentration and minerality. • 2013 Cayuse Vineyards Armada Vineyard Syrah, 3L etched bottle signed by Christophe Baron 95 points, Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate. From a vineyard that has the highest clay content of all the estate vineyards, the 2013 Syrah Armada Vineyard is a classically built Syrah. Give these bottles 3–4 years in the cellar and enjoy through 2033.
• 2013 Cayuse Vineyards God Only Knows Grenache, 3L etched bottle signed by Christophe Baron 94 points, Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate. Grenache God Only Knows Armada Vineyard offers a gorgeous, rich, almost masculine style… in its dark fruits, crushed herbs, mineral and leather scented profile. It will drink nicely for another decade.
VALUE: Instant Access! SPECIAL THANKS: Cayuse Vineyards

Dale Chihuly Glass Sculpture Deep Orange Soft Cylinder with Pine Green Lip Wrap Dale Chihuly’s Soft Cylinders, a series that began 30 years ago, demonstrates a pick-up technique of drawing on glass using a series of colored glass shards, carefully placed on a hotplate and gathered onto the molten piece before the final gather of glass from the furnace. The drawings on the cylinders reflect the influence American Indian trade blankets have on the artist’s works. Created at Pilchuck in the summer of 2016, Deep Orange Soft Cylinder with Pine Green Lip Wrap is the most recent iteration of this remarkable series.

The burden of T1D, what it means… Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease caused by a mistaken attack on healthy insulin-producing cells in the body, destroying them. Insulin is a hormone necessary for ushering sugar into cells in the body and brain to provide fuel for the cells. It requires patients, who can’t produce their own insulin, to depend on daily injections or a conventional insulin pump. In children, this can be especially worrisome, because without constant monitoring, dangerously low glucose levels may go undetected in the overnight hours. Parents awaken several times during the night to test their children’s levels and be prepared to intervene on a moment’s notice. We don’t know what causes T1D and right now, there is no cure. There is a grueling regimen of carb counting, glucose measuring and insulin dosing that takes a great emotional and financial toll on people with the disease and their families. That’s why your Fund A Cure gift is so meaningful – it helps to move game-changing therapies out of the lab and into the waiting hands of the T1D community.

Situated on 13 perfectly sloped acres in the Blue Mountains of Walla Walla, Washington, àMaurice Cellars is a family-owned boutique winery that creates extraordinary, food-friendly wines. Each wine is the living result of fervent dedication to sustainable viticulture and the passion and skill of expert winemaking—and the growing talents of more than 15,000 select vines. www.amaurice.com
“Ambassador Wines – Exclusively Red Wine, Exclusively Estate, Exclusively Red Mountain.” Ambassador Wines of Washington produces 100% Estate Grown Washington State wines from our outstanding vineyard located on Red Mountain. We are committed to making wines of the finest quality that reflect the richness and diversity of the Red Mountain terroir. www.ambassadorwinery.com
Our goal is to make wines that evoke clarity: clarity of place, clarity of type, clarity of purpose. We believe this is best expressed by using the classic French varietals and blends, with methods passed down over generations. We work within this context to allow Washington vineyards and terroirs to distinguish themselves. Terroir is only readily appreciable in a wellformed, harmonious wine. Structure is the backbone from which beauty can radiate. Avennia is inspired by the Roman name for the city of Avignon, and signifies for us the heart of Old World winemaking. Our wines are designed to tease rather than flaunt; pique interest, not beg for attention. They stand for elegance, delicacy, purity. Our wines are made to enhance conversation, not dominate it, and will be a welcome guest at the table. www.avennia.com

Since our first vintage in 1997, we’ve had a single-minded goal of crafting compelling wines with individual character, that are approachable and ageworthy, and which showcase Washington as a distinguished wine region of the world. Today, Betz Family Winery is headed by our two families, both committed to be true to our heritage, our family members, and true to what the Betz winery embodies: wines of dimension and pleasure, wines that allow the character of Washington to shine through. They are a blend of the best elements of the New and the Old Worlds; full ripe fruit and yet structured for longevity. www.betzfamilywinery.com
Browne Family Vineyards was 15 years in the making before its first vintage ever debuted. Vineyards, winemakers, and cellar masters committed to world-class wine production were carefully and deliberately selected to represent the best of the Columbia Valley AVA. Browne Family is a boutique winery in Walla Walla; state-of-the-art production facilities assure consistent quality. With hand-crafted dedication throughout the entire winemaking process, every step we take is a careful commitment for uncompromised quality, assuring cellar-worthy vintages that stand the test of time. www.brownefamilyvineyards.com
Owner Nina Buty founded Buty in 2000, inspired by a decade of vintages from Washington and overseas. An artisan producer, Buty creates vineyard-designated Chardonnay, a crisp white blend, and nuanced red blends – including Rediviva, Washington’s pioneering blend of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Our philosophy of winemaking reflects the old religious worldview of human growth from body to mind to soul to spirit, called “the great nest of being.” The all- inclusive nest of being grows over time as we reach for the spiritual levels of life. So too, Buty wines evolve, expanding their quality at each stage of their development. www.butywinery.com

Fifty years ago, a tiny winery called Ste. Michelle Vineyards introduced its first vintage of European-style premium wine. It was the release that inspired today’s thriving Washington wine industry – our state is now home to nearly 1,000 wineries and 14 AVAs. Let’s raise a glass to the first five decades of our story… but only as a motivation to produce even more remarkable Chateau Ste. Michelle wine experiences in the next half-century. Cheers. The best is yet to come. www.ste-michelle.com
Claar Wine Group is a familyowned estate winery with vineyards on south-facing hillsides atop the White Bluffs overlooking the Columbia River. In this distinct microclimate, ranked as one of the best winegrowing regions of the state, the unique terroir and quality grapes produce premium wines. Wines produced include Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot, Syrah, and Bordeaux blends. Claar Wine Group strives to develop proactive, preventative, and sustainable agricultural practices. These include the use of integrated pest management, beneficial cover crops, and manual weed control. The vineyards and winery are both LIVE, IOBC certified sustainable and Salmon-Safe. Our family of brands includes Claar Cellars, Ridge Crest, Kelso, Demri Layne and Nicola’s redmark, Le Chateau, and Chateau Walla Walla. www.claarcellars.com
We believe that great wine is made in the vineyard. In 1992 Hugh and Kathy Shiels planted DuBrul Vineyard. The steep south-facing hillside yields grapes with unique flavors and structure. In 2001 we founded Côte Bonneville to produce classically styled wines that best express our spectacular site. Kerry, our winemaker, creates world-class wines from all our varietals, showcasing each terroir. www.cotebonneville.com

DeLille Cellars is considered a principal influence in establishing Washington as a premier viticultural region. Regarded as one of the pioneer producers of Bordeaux-style blends, the focus has been on showcasing the powerful, concentrated and structured fruit of Washington State through the European art of blending–not only through the combination of Bordeaux grape varieties, but also marrying celebrated vineyards to express the unique terroir of the region. Earning numerous accolades since its creation in 1992, DeLille Cellars continues to receive stellar ratings. www.delillecellars.com
At Dunham Cellars we produce premium wines through gentle treatment in all phases of the winemaking process. Using grapes from some of the finest vineyards in the Walla Walla, Yakima and Columbia Valleys, our wines reflect our commitment to quality from vineyard to bottle and showcase the quality of our vineyards and their combinations of climate, soil, and geography. From our very first vintage, a 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon, our wines have earned high marks from both consumers and trade. We continue to make wines that are not only structured and balanced but that we enjoy and our proud to hang the Dunham name on. www.dunhamcellars.com
Guardian Cellars is focused on making stellar wines from Washington’s finest vineyards and so much more. A boutique winery and tasting room in Woodinville, we are a husbandand-wife team, a cop and a reporter. www.guardiancellars.com

Long Shadows Vintners brings seven of the world’s most celebrated winemakers to Washington State’s Columbia Valley. Each winemaker crafts a single, stand-alone wine using grape varieties for which he is best known. Long Shadows founder and Washington wine trailblazer, Allen Shoup, facilitates the collaboration. Produced at a state-of-the-art winery in Walla Walla, these seven distinct wines comprise the Long Shadows Vintners collection. www.longshadows.com
Only the best of the best Columbia Valley and Walla Walla Valley grapes are chosen for Northstar wines. Combining the art of Old World winemaking with New World innovation to create Merlot that can be considered among the world’s best, Northstar is a guiding light, attracting wine lovers to the marvel of Washington State Merlot. Diversity of vineyards and sub-appellations within the Columbia Valley are Northstar’s hallmarks. Vines average 15 years old and yield grapes with concentrated varietal flavors. Head Winemaker David “Merf” Merfeld blends the best Merlot from the region with other varietals to make the best wines possible. www.northstarwinery.com
Since our first vintage in 1999, Owen Roe has been working to produce exceptional wines from Oregon and Washington. The winery is named after Owen Roe O’Neill, a 17th century Irish Patriot who dedicated his life to upholding the highest principles of political equality and freedom. Partners David and Angelica O’Reilly, along with Ben and Julie Wolff, share his dedication to principle and excellence with our meticulous attention to every aspect of winemaking and farming. www.owenroe.com

Savage Grace Wines was established in 2011 by owner-winemaker Michael Savage, with a vintage of Cabernet Franc His vision is to make Old World-style loweralcohol, expressive wines, and he put his philosophy of low-intervention winemaking into practice, where the grape, vineyard, and vintage form a unique balance. “SAVAGE” – echoes the struggle of the grape to withstand the stress of ripening, along with making wine that is true to the grape, site, and vintage. “GRACE” – also his wife’s name, symbolizes what he hopes to achieve as the end result: a wine that is delicate, balanced, approachable yet expressive. www.savagegracewines.com
Launched in 2007, Sleight of Hand Cellars has but one focus: to craft exceptional wines from exceptional vineyards here in the state of Washington. The winery has been in operation for only a short time, but in that time, Sleight of Hand Cellars was named by Seattle Magazine as one of “The Next Generation” of up-andcoming wineries in Washington State, as well as one of “The Next Cult Wineries.” These accolades, along with some great scores along the way, only push us to strive to make even better wines, year in and year out. www.sofhcellars.com
Walla Walla Vintners is a limited-production winery dedicated to crafting premium red wines – Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cuvée, Merlot, and Sangiovese. Winemakers Myles Anderson, Gordon Venneri and William von Metzger employ laborintensive, traditional techniques to ensure the integrity of the 5,000 cases produced each year. The unfiltered, unfined wine produced is nationally recognized as one of the best wines in Washington State, earning accolades from Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, Seattle Wine Awards and Wine Press Northwest. www.wallawallavintners.com
