L I F E W I T H T 1 D can be difficult and upsetting. It can be life threatening and it never goes away. It affects every bite you eat and every jog you go on. Despite this, people with T1D are an inspiration, facing the challenges of the disease with courage. People with T1D don’t let it stand in the way of achieving goals. People like Sophie. S O P H I E could barely muster a smile for a Mother’s Day family photo in 2017. By day’s end, she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Since then, she and her family have learned how to manage her disease. She has volunteered for JDRF as a Dream Gala Ambassador, a Gingerbread Fund A Cure Speaker Village Elf, and a leader of her Sophie Stonehocker, age 11 family’s Beat the Bridge team. Tonight, Sophie, will talk about that life-changing day and, together with her father Scott, will share their inspiring “can do” attitude along with their hopes and dreams for a future without T1D.
JDRF has been there and supported us since day one of diagnosis. They gave us hope that our daughter will be okay, and life will go on as planned. JDRF has also helped us build a community of other T1D families and friends. These connections have been so important as we navigate our new normal life with T1D. DANTE MARIONI BLOWN GLASS WHOPPER VASE World-renowned Studio Glass artist, Dante Marioni, burst onto the international glass scene at the age of 19 with a signature style that has been described as the “purest of classical forms executed in glass by an American glassblower.” His amphoras, vases, and ewers are derived from Greek and Etruscan prototypes, yet they are imaginatively and sometimes whimsically reinterpreted. His impossibly elongated, sinuous shapes are made with bright and saturated contrasting colors. Marioni’s sophisticated glass objects evoke the rich tradition of classical Mediterranean pottery and bronzes and unite the artist’s training in centuries-old Venetian glassblowing techniques with some of the greatest masters in contemporary glass. The son of American studio glass pioneer Paul Marioni, Dante was raised in a family of artists which includes two well-known uncles, painter Joseph Marioni and conceptual artist Tom Marioni. Using pop art-influenced bold colors, paired with classical forms, Marioni has created several series of vessels, including the Whoppers, that look contemporary while simultaneously honoring the history of Italian glass. POHLMAN-KNOWLES SCULPTED GLASS ARTWORK Seattle glass artists Sabrina Knowles and Jenny Pohlman have been working collaboratively to create glass sculpture for more than 25 years. Throughout this journey, they have drawn inspiration from their extensive travels and life experiences. Together, they morph these experiences into sculptural stories to create forms that embrace our common humanity, visually express our unity, and invite viewers to reflect. The intent of the Homage series is to evoke emotion through simple gesture, such as a nod of the head or bent shoulders. The series represents reverence, an homage to each other and to life. Combining elements of earthy, pit-fired clay with translucent cast glass—along with touches of surface paint and the occasional found object, Bothwell’s figurative pieces explore the mysteries of body and soul, things seen and unseen. With her mixture of allegory and narrative, the artist has established herself as a master of storytelling though art within the glass community. Animals and human-animal hybrids are among Bothwell’s favorite forms. She thrives on nature and lives with her family in the Pennsylvania countryside, her studio overlooking acres of rolling hills and wildlife-filled forests, both serving as constant sources of artistic inspiration. With her gentle, oddly sweet pieces, Christina Bothwell has a very loyal collector following and is the subject of an upcoming PBS documentary filmed this February.
