MARCH 4, 2023
Sheraton Grand Seattle
to the JDRF Seattle Guild Dream Gala
Dear Dream Gala Guests,
Thank you for joining us this evening. On behalf of the JDRF Seattle Guild Board of Directors, I would like to welcome you to the 2023 Dream Gala. I am thrilled that we are back in the ballroom for the first time since 2019! As the parent of a daughter with T1D, I know firsthand the impact that your support makes for all of us impacted by this disease.
Thanks to your generosity, the JDRF Seattle Guild has raised more than $82 million for T1D research. Research that is targeted to driving better management and outcomes, and ultimately a cure.
Tonight, we honor a truly amazing leader in the fight against T1D. Rebecca Benaroya has provided leadership and generosity since the founding of the JDRF Seattle Guild more than 30 years ago. Motivated by her love for her grandson Michael, who was diagnosed when he was a young child, Mrs. Benaroya has championed the quest for a cure through the establishment of the Benaroya Research Institute at VMFH as well as her support of the JDRF Seattle Guild.
From Mrs. Benaroya and her beloved husband Jack, to her son Larry and daughter-in-law Sherry, to her grandchildren Michael, and his wife Alicia, and Brooke, and her husband Josh, the fight against T1D is a family affair. This generational family approach to philanthropy has been a beacon of inspiration for my own family during our 25 year involvement with the JDRF Seattle Guild.
The true impact of Mrs. Benaroya on T1D research is incalculable and we are thrilled to honor such a philanthropic icon in our community.
The generosity of Mrs. Benaroya and each of you this evening is truly inspirational. Together we will Dream BIG and Create a World Without T1D.
With admiration and gratitude,
Mary Lee JDRF Seattle Guild Board President
FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT
The true impact of Mrs. Benaroya on T1D research is incalculable and we are thrilled to honor such a philanthropic icon in our community.
Dear Gala Patrons,
Welcome to the JDRF Seattle Guild 32nd Annual Dream Gala. Thank you for joining us to help find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and to honor Rebecca Benaroya!
T1D has personally affected the Boyle family. When our son, Kiki, was diagnosed at age 9, we had very little knowledge about the disease. We quickly learned that it was a relentless fight to stay alive with finger pricks and insulin injections. As parents, we are proud of Kiki’s 16 years of determination to overcome this disease. Unfortunately, he is not alone. There are over 1.45 million Americans similarly fighting this disease.
Also affected by T1D, The Benaroya family has been the backbone of the Seattle Guild and Dream Gala from its inception. We are endlessly grateful for their fight to find a cure. Tonight, our honoree is Rebecca Benaroya, who deserves this honor as much as anyone we know. Rebecca has been a critical driver in life changing T1D advancements.
JDRF has been making significant progress to improve the lives of people with T1D. Recently, JDRF funded drug research has delayed the onset of T1D by an average of two years. And beta cell transplants that may provide a cure to T1D are in human clinical trials. Your funding is changing lives!
Over 30 years ago, our Seattle Guild members united and envisioned our BIG DREAM, a world without T1D. Today, our belief in this dream is stronger than ever. The money we raise tonight will fund ongoing research toward the knowledge, treatment and ultimately, the cure and prevention of this disease.
Your generous support tonight of the JDRF Seattle Guild will positively impact and improve the lives of people, families and communities all living with T1D.
Dreaming BIG,
Daniela Dombrowski and Michael Boyle 2023 Dream Gala Co-Chairs
2023 DREAM GALA CO-CHAIRS

Rebecca Benaroya
Our annual Living & Giving Award recognizes a person or group who has made an extraordinary contribution to JDRF. Tonight, we are pleased to honor Rebecca “Becky” Benaroya with this year’s award.
For more than 30 years, Rebecca’s passion, vision and generosity have helped make possible groundbreaking advancements in the quest to defeat type 1 diabetes. When her 5-year-old grandson Michael was diagnosed with T1D, she and her late husband Jack funded the worldrenowned Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason Medical Center, dedicated to advancing science that will one day predict, prevent, reverse, and cure diseases including T1D.
Rebecca has been a major leadership donor of JDRF since attending our first Dream Gala. Now, in this, her 100th birthday year, Rebecca has presented our JDRF Seattle Guild with another $1 million gift. This remarkable gift will have a lasting impact on the lives of those who live with T1D and serves as an inspiration for all of us to follow her example of generosity.
Rebecca’s giving extends across the broader community; she and Jack supported the building of Seattle’s beautiful Benaroya Hall. They have also supported a diverse group of organizations such as the University of Washington Medical Center, Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, the Jewish Federation and Council of Seattle, The Tacoma Art Museum and many more.
Rebecca, our heartfelt thanks for your long-standing legacy of generosity and support for JDRF!
2023 LIVING & GIVING AWARD
Dear Patrons and Friends,
Welcome to the 32nd Annual Dream Gala! I am so honored to be recognized with this year’s Living & Giving Award. It’s one of the great joys of my life to support the work of JDRF.
From the moment my grandson Michael was diagnosed, I have been moved to do what I can to help. There’s not a person I know that doesn’t have a loved one who has been affected by type 1 diabetes. We know that our support tonight will help the many brilliant scientists at JDRF and the Benaroya Research Institute one day find a cure. It’s what all of us at the Dream Gala dream of: A world without type 1 diabetes.
I feel so very fortunate to be able to make a difference; the money I give brings me more joy and happiness than anything I could ever buy. One of my late husband Jack’s favorite quotes is from Winston Churchill, and it inspires me to this day: “You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.” I hope you will join with me tonight in raising a paddle to support the incredibly important work of JDRF – as together we dream big!

TONIGHT
Every year at the Dream Gala, we are reminded that donations fund research that will one day lead to a cure for type 1 diabetes. Tonight, we are celebrating significant scientific advances that your generosity helped to make happen.
Stem-cell therapy moves forward
T1D is an autoimmune disorder where the body destroys the beta cells in the pancreas that produces insulin. People with T1D must administer insulin, either through injection, inhaler, or pump to live. One important pathway to a cure for T1D is to develop beta cell replacement therapies to allow the body to start producing its own insulin again, limiting or ideally entirely removing the need for externally administered insulin.
In July 2022, Vertex Pharmaceuticals acquired ViaCyte, two of the most important and innovative companies in the stem-cell based research arena. The acquisition will accelerate our goal of transforming or curing T1D. Today, Vertex is pursuing stem-cell derived islet replacement therapy grounded in JDRF-funded research. The results of human clinical trials are underway, with one participant completely off of insulin!
A critical breakthrough
The Food and Drug Administration has approved the world’s first type 1 diabetes disease-modifying drug, Tzield™. This immunotherapy drug is proven to delay the onset of T1D by up to two years in people who are at high risk for the disease.
By delaying the onset of T1D, Tzield reduces the risks of diabetic complications such as eye, kidney, nerve, and heart disease for those with biomarkers for the disease. This new drug offers the gift of time, giving families time to prepare.
This breakthrough represents a turning point in the field, according to Dr. Kevan Herold from Yale School of Medicine: “First, it identifies a way in which an immune therapy to stop the disease process might be combined with cell replacements in those with type 1 diabetes. It also suggests that it is time to screen more broadly to identify those at risk for type 1 diabetes, since now there is a therapy that can change its course.” This marks another incredible moment in our battle against T1D.
Let’s keep the momentum going – and keep dreaming big as we support research for the cure!

Inspiring stories from inspiring people
The Fund A Cure program features LESLIE ROSEN and the RUETTGERS FAMILY with their daughter, Lucie. Each will share their personal story about life with type 1 diabetes.
Leslie Rosen: “Diabetes has not stopped me.”
The diagnosis came when she was just eight years old, and ever since, Leslie Rosen has fought to manage T1D – so that it wouldn’t manage her.
“Diabetes has not stopped me,” Leslie says. “Starting from the age of 11, I went to summer camp in California, culminating in a trip to Israel in high school. I went away to college. I lived in New York. I had a baby.” Of her son, now three years old, she says: “I had to have him through IVF, but thanks to the miracles of science and the research behind diabetes, I was able to have a healthy and successful pregnancy.”
As a JDRF Seattle Guild Board member, Leslie knows firsthand the power of community. “As someone who deals with T1D every day, it’s so nice to know the whole community is rallying behind you.”
The Ruettgers Family: Stoic, resilient and strong.
When Chris and Allie got the news, it felt to them like an altered reality. Their daughter Lucie, then just nine years old, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. As it does for countless others, the diagnosis left the family reeling.
“It’s very stressful to constantly have to keep your child alive,” Allie says. “It’s 24/7, and T1D is always in the background. It informs almost all the decisions we make.” But Chris and Allie work hard to make sure
T1D doesn’t stop Lucie from doing the things she wants to do. A great student, Lucie also plays tennis and lacrosse. “She’s an amazing young woman,” Allie says. “Stoic, resilient, and strong.”
Allie and Chris are immensely grateful for our JDRF community, and full of hope that the research we are supporting will one day lead to a cure.

CHEERS AND THANK YOU!
Avennia
Our goal at Avennia is to make wines that evoke clarity: clarity of place, clarity of type, clarity of purpose. We believe this is best expressed by using the classic French varietals and blends, with methods passed down over generations. We work within this context to allow Washington vineyards and terroirs to distinguish themselves. Terroir is only readily appreciable in a well-formed, harmonious wine. Structure is the backbone from which beauty can radiate. www.avennia.com
Côte Bonneville
In 1992, Hugh and Kathy Shiels planted DuBrul Vineyard. The steep southfacing hillside yields grapes with unique flavors and structure. In 2001, we founded Côte Bonneville to produce classically styled wines that best express our spectacular site. Kerry, our winemaker, creates beautiful wines from all our varietals, showcasing each terroir. www.cotebonneville.com
Dunham Cellars
Celebrating over 25 years of making wine, Dunham Cellars strives for excellence from vineyard to bottle, and sources fruit from several renowned estate vineyards in prime locations around the Walla Walla and Columbia Valley appellations. With a strong heritage and a brand well-known throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond, we are committed to producing premium wines through gentle treatment in all phases of the winemaking process. Our goal is to bring something to the bottle that we enjoy and are proud to label with the name Dunham. www.dunhamcellars.com
Latta Wines
Andrew Latta founded Latta Wines with the 2011 vintage to pursue excellence in uncommon varietals from outstanding sites. Previously as a winemaker for a larger Washington winery, he was able to scour thousands of acres of vineyard land to find perfect matches of soil and grapes for his own project. In his winemaking career, Andrew has received more than 350 scores of 90 points or higher with 75 of those being 95 or higher. Andrew’s uncompromising hands-on winemaking is marked by low intervention and traditional techniques pursuing texture, balance and intensity. His wines are hand-made, extremely small lot, and delicious. www.lattawines.com

Long Shadows Vintners
Long Shadows Vintners is a partnership that brings seven of the world’s most celebrated winemakers to Washington State’s Columbia Valley. Each partner crafts a single, stand-alone wine using grape varietals for which he is best known. Long Shadows founder and Washington wine trailblazer Allen Shoup facilitated the collaboration with Gilles Nicault as Director of Winemaking and Viticulture. Produced at a state-of-the-art winery in Walla Walla, each of these seven, distinct wines comprise the Long Shadows Vintners collection. www.longshadows.com
Matteo Wines
Winemaker Matthew Loso joins us this evening to showcase his personal creation, Matteo Wines. Matthew’s passion for wine was sparked at a young age and in 1992 Matthew became Cellarmaster and Winemaker at a small winery in Woodinville. This resulted in the first commercial production of Matthews Cellars in 1993, this first vintage completely sold out in 30 days. By 1997, Matthews Cellars had become one of the most well-known and well-respected wineries in Washington State. Following the 2008 sale of his Matthews Cellars ownership stake, Matthew Loso launched Woodinville-based “Woodinville Custom Crush.” This rapidly growing alternative state-of-the-art winemaking facility allows existing and startup producers the ability to focus on quality and marketing, while Loso and his highly-qualified team manage production. Matthews’s goal has always been to bring the best that the industry has to offer from around the world to our front door. As a source of artistic outlet, Matthew also began his own private labeled wine called “Matteo.” This is a very small production of particular varietals that is reserved for charitable events and an extremely limited mailing list following. www.matteowines.com
Chris Nishiwaki
Chris Nishiwaki is a Mercer Island-based wine, food, restaurant, travel and hospitality writer, and a television and film consultant. Chris has apprenticed in winemaking since the 2013 vintage under Josh Lawrence and Aryn Morell of Walla Walla’s M&L Production, crafting wines for Matthew’s Winery, Tenor, Alleromb, Mullan Road, Gard Vintners, Royal Bull, MorellPeña, and Ardor Cellars. Chris has written for a variety of publications, including The Seattle Times, Seattle Magazine, and Seattle Metropolitan Magazine. He has contributed to Andrew Zimmerman’s “Bizarre Foods,” Marcus Samuelsson’s “No Passport Required” and Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservations,” among others. He is currently producing a film about the seminal music label Sub Pop Records.
WINE HOSTS
Novelty Hill / Januik Winery
Novelty Hill and Januik are two independent wineries that share a destination tasting room, production facility, and special events venue in Woodinville, under the direction of Mike Januik, one of Washington’s most acclaimed winemakers. The partnership began in 2000, shortly after Mike met the Alberg family and began consulting on the planting of a new vineyard, later to be named Stillwater Creek. Being a vintner, Mike couldn’t imagine owning grapes without making wine. It didn’t take much to convince the Albergs; later that year, they established Novelty Hill with Mike at the winemaking helm. After crushing two vintages in Walla Walla, the operation moved to Woodinville in 2002, and five years later relocated to the stylish, modern, state-of-the-art facility the two wineries currently share. www.noveltyhilljanuik.com
Sightglass Cellars
Sean Boyd has been making wine in Woodinville for over two decades, establishing a reputation for high-quality, award-winning wines while winemaker at Woodinville Wine Cellars, then opening his own winery, Sightglass Cellars 8 years ago. Working with exceptional vineyards and focusing on varietal expression, Sean has solidified his reputation in the Washington Wine community. But his love of wine and interest in winemaking started years earlier. Sean grew up in California around the wine industry, worked in some wine shops and then essentially apprenticed himself to some exceptional winemakers at wineries throughout the world including Penfolds and Rosemount Estates in Australia, Ramos Pinto in Portugal, and Miguel Torres in Spain. Taking the knowledge gained from working around the world, Sean took the leap to Washington in 1998, seeing the young wine industry was taking off, and knowing he could be a part of making some very special wines. www.sightglasscellars.com
