d/ Pour nous, Européens du centre, la Finlande est un pays reculé, cerné de froid, de mystère et de poésie. Un pays de Lapons, éleveurs de rennes. Le pays du père Noël. Une contrée de marins, de poissons salés, de forêts et de neige. Un pays de mythologie, de folklore, de silence et de nature. Un cocktail que l’on retrouve dans beaucoup des travaux qui nous ont étés proposés. Ceux-ci font souvent la part belle au figuratif. Cet ouvrage n’a aucune prétention scientifique ; il est juste une compilation représentative de ce que l’on peut retrouver en Finlande et sur ses 179 584 îles comme graveurs, lithographes et sérigraphes. Chaque artiste a décidé de se présenter avec son style et ses mots. La rencontre avec l’artiste franco-finnoise Christelle Mas fut décisive, très enrichissante. Elle fut d’une grande aide pour sélectionner les artistes et leurs travaux, faire les traductions finno-françaises et supporter ma nonchalance et ma lenteur. Sans elle, ce projet n’existerait pas. Nina Lassilia, artiste finnoise résidant en Belgique, s’est occupée des traductions finoanglaises. Un grand merci à elle, pour sa rapidité et son efficacité.

I like to explore areas where both history and modern times are present.The origin of this series of prints is in a former textile factory, which nowadays has a new use. Observation on details is the beginning of all images.
Je suis intéressée par les espaces qui condensent à la fois le passé et le présent. Le point de départ de cette série a été une ancienne usine textile qui fait aujourd’hui l’objet d’une autre utilisation. Les gravures sont nées à partir de l’observation de détails.

Annika Dahlsten
Born in 1975, Vaasa, Finland.
On taidegraafikkona erikoistunut kivilitografiaan. Hän työskentelee myös installaatioiden ja liikkuvan kuvan, erityisesti animaation parissa. Hän käsittelee teoksissaan usein rajatiloja: poissaolon ja läsnäolon välisiä taukoja, tai hetkiä, jolloin todellisuus vääristyy ja jokin tuttu ja turvallinen muuttuu vieraaksi.
Annika Dahlsten is a printmaker and specialized in stone lithography. She also works with three dimensional forms and moving image, especially animation. The themes of her works often include borderline states: the pauses between absence and presence, or moments when reality is distorted and something familiar and ordinary turns strange and uncanny.
Annika Dahlsten est une graveure spécialisée dans la lithographie. Elle fait aussi des installations et travaille avec les images mouvantes, plus particulièrement avec l’animation. Elle recherche dans son travail des « états-frontières » : des moments entre l’absence et la présence, lorsque la réalité se déforme et que les choses familières deviennent étrangères.

Olen taidegraafikko ja työskentelen pääasiassa mezzotintoa käyttäen. Joskus käytän myös kuivaneulatekniikkaa, puupiirrosta sekä erilaisia piirustustekniikoita. Haluan työskennellä perinteisesti ja tarkasti. Taiteeni tekeminen on yksinkertaisesti elämäni tarkoitus. Minulla ei ole elämässäni mitään muuta niin tärkeää asiaa.
I am a printmaker and I use usually mezzotint technique. Sometimes I use other techniques like dry point, woodcut and different drawing methods. I want my work to be traditional and sharp. Making art is a purpose of life for me. Nothing else in life is as important to me.
Je travaille essentiellement la manière noire. Parfois, j’utilise d’autres techniques comme la pointe sèche ou la gravure sur bois. Je travaille d’une manière traditionnelle et précise. La création artistique est centrale dans ma vie. Rien n’est plus important pour moi.

I make unique graphic prints, monotypes. As well as colour, shape and movement, I use words: the names of the works are sometimes several sentences long. The pictures always originate from a real experience of preciousness and beauty of life.
Mes gravures sont des pièces uniques. Les couleurs, les formes et les mouvements sont pour moi des outils comparables à des mots : les noms des œuvres peuvent parfois faire plusieurs phrases. Le point de départ de celles-ci se trouve toujours dans expérience de la vie.

Born in 1949 in Tampere, Finland. The ideas what I want to express are selecting the medium. I am working with graphic art, paintings, assemblages, installations, mixed media and photo/video works. With digital graphic I am using various graphic programs and three different methods. It is very interesting to combine and find different visual material to express new graphical ideas. Je choisis mon médium en fonction de mes idées. Mon œuvre est protéiforme. Je fais de la gravure, de la peinture, des assemblages, des installations, de la photographie, de la vidéo et j’utilise des techniques mixtes. Pour l‘estampe numérique, j’utilise divers programmes graphiques. Il est très intéressant de combiner et de trouver différents matériaux visuels pour pouvoir exprimer de nouvelles idées graphiques.

I find the content of my artwork from things familiar to me from my past. A shirt that belonged to my grandfather, my grandma’s house from my childhood, the landscapes of my daily itinerary, or the games I played as a boy are examples of the starting points of my working process.

Poimin kuviini luonnon tunnelmia. Päivän vaihtuminen iltaan, hämärän hetket ja valon uudelleen löytyminen aamulla kiinnostavat minua. Eläimet kuvissani ovat kohtaamisia luonnossa ja täydentävät kuvan tarinaa omalla tavallaan.
I use moods of nature in my imagery. The way the day turns to dusk, the transience of half-light and the re-emergence of dawn are all central to my work. The animals I depict represent meeting points with nature and in each picture they add another dimension to the story I’m telling.
Pour réaliser mes travaux, j’utilise les «humeurs de la nature.» Le jour qui se tourne vers le crépuscule, la fugacité de la pénombre et la réémergence de l’aube sont au centre de mon travail. Dans celui-ci, les animaux représentent des points de rencontre dans la nature et ajoutent une nouvelle dimension à l’histoire que raconte l’image.

Outi Koiviston työt käsittelevät kokemusta havainnosta. Teokset ovat usein maisemia mutta ne eivät ole määriteltyjä paikkoja vaikka ovat usein jostain paikasta tai kuvast lähtöisin. Koivisto työskentelee eri taidegrafiikan ja piirtämisen välineitä käyttäen. Viimeisimmät työt ovat pääosin tussipuupiirroksen ja frottagetekniikan variaatioita.
Outi Koivisto’s works explore the experience of perception. The works are often landscapes, but they do not represent any particular place. However, they are often based on a certain place or image. Koivisto works with various printmaking and drawing methods. Her latest works are mainly variations of woodcut and frottage techniques.

Asuu ja työskentelee Hämeenlinnassa.Teosteni aiheena on mielen toiminta sen eri tasoilla. Kuvat antimateriahiukkasten levottomasta tanssista ja eläinhahmojen vakaammasta liikkeestä symboloivat mielen liikkeitä sen eri tasoilla, karkeasta hienovaraisempaan.
The subject matter in my work is the function of mind in different levels. I use images of the restless dance of dark matter particles and the calm movements of animal figures as symbols for the different levels of the movement of the mind, from rough to subtle.
L’objet de mon travail est l’activité de l’esprit à différents niveaux. La danse agitée des particules d’anti matière et le mouvement calme des figures animales symbolisent le fonctionnement de l’esprit à différents degrés, des plus bruts aux plus subtils.

Born in 1957, Finland. lives and works by the seashore in Raahe, Northern Finland.
Luonto ja vuodenaikojen vaihtelut, valoisat kesät ja talven tummuus, ovat tärkeä osa hänen työskentelyään. Luonnon hiljaisuudessa voi kokea ajattomuuden tunteen.
Nature and it´s seasons are an important part of her work. Seeking the lightest colours of summer and the darkest hours of the deepest winter is a vital part of her artist ambition. Feeling the silence in nature gives a sense of timelessness.
La nature, le passage des saisons, les étés lumineux et les hivers sombres sont des éléments très présents dans son travail. C’est dans le silence de la nature que nous pouvons éprouver l’intemporalité.

Tein ensimmäiset «vedenpaisumus»-aiheiset grafiikkani 1979 ja siitä lähtien ovat kaikki teokseni liittyneet jollain tavalla tähän teemaan; meret, rankkasateet, tuhotulvat, vesijättömaat ja jälleenrakennus. Minua kiinnostaa se miten ihminen rakentaa eri puolilla maailmaa ja sopeutuu erilaisiin ilmasto-olosuhteisiin.
I made my first flood themed graphics in 1979 and from then on all my works have been connected to this subject; oceans, heavy rains, destructive floods, alluvions and reconstruction. I’m interested in how humans build all over the world and how they adapt themselves to all these different climate circumstances.
J’ai commencé mes toutes premières gravures sur le thème biblique du déluge en 1979. Ensuite, mes œuvres ont toujours été en rapport d’une certaine façon avec ce thème : la mer, les inondations dévastatrices et les déchets engendrés dans les lieux sinistrés et les reconstructions. Cela m’intéresse de voir comment les humains construisent leur environnement dans le monde et s’adaptent aux conditions climatiques.

I have worked as a professional visual and graphic artist since 1993. I live and work in the village of Lapaluoto in northern Finland. My graphic prints are not just landscape imagery but also some sort of gates into different spaces, paths into an inner harmony. Laakso uses several printmaking techniques such as photopolymer gravure, monotype and woodcut. Currently he is concentrating on using photogravure techniques, combining photographyand printmaking.

Piia Lehden taidegrafiikassa ihmisen ja luonnon rajapinnat sekoittuvat. Taiteilija leikkii rooleilla ja ruumiillisuudella häivyttämällä ihmisen, eläimen ja kasvin rajaa. Hänen teoksensa kuvastavat herkällä tavalla sitä haurasta suhdetta, joka ihmisen, eläimen ja luonnon välillä on olemassa. Työt herättelevät katsojaansa: voimme ainakin jossain määrin valita, olemmeko omassa elämässämme ja omilla valinnoillamme luonnon ja luomakunnan puolella vai sitä vastaan.
In Piia Lehti’s prints, human and nature are combined to the point of becoming intermingled. The artist plays with roles and corporeality by blurring the lines between humans, animals, and plants. Her work also depicts with great sensitivity the fragile relationship that exists between the three. The pieces stir the viewer: we can, at least to some extent, choose through the decisions we make either to be with nature or against it.
Dans ses gravures, la limite entre l’humain et la nature se confond. L’artiste joue en brouillant les pistes entre les humains, les animaux et les plantes. Son travail illustre également avec une grande sensibilité la relation fragile qui existe entre les trois. Her works are like notes in a diary.

The roots of Jaakko Mattila’s visual expression are in the abstract modernism. Landscapes, repeated geometrical shapes like circles and cubes are common elements in his art.The circle, symbolizing eternity and perfection, is perhaps the most recognizable one. Scandinavian reticence and functional clarity of finnish design is evident in both his prints and painting.

Kerään aiheita kävely- ja pyöräilyretkiltäni, matkoilta, sekä puutarhastani valokuvaten. Luonnostelun kautta kuvat siirtyvät laatalle. Usean kaiverrus- ja vedostuskerran lopputuloksena syntyy monivärinen, runsaskuvioinen vedos, kaukana alkuperäisestä valokuvasta. Vedostan samaa aihetta värejä vaihdellen, näin jokainen vedos on uniikki.
I find themes and subjects for my works quite randomly, by photographing what I see and find interesting when traveling and walking or biking in my neighborhood. After that I sketch the images straight on the plate. The final work with all its colors and patterns is a result of several stages of carving and printing again and again, so that in the end the image of the work can be quite far from the original photograph itself. I usually print different color variations from the same plate, thus every single printed sheet is a unique one.
Je trouve mes sujets d’inspiration au fil de mes voyages, de mes promenades à pied, à vélo, et en photographiant mon jardin. J’esquisse ensuite des images directement sur la plaque. Après plusieurs incisions et impressions, l’image finale avec toutes ses couleurs et ses motifs ne ressemble plus à la photographie originale. J’utilise différentes variations de couleurs pour chaque plaque de gravure. Chaque œuvre est unique.

My works often originate from the articles of popular science, or from the sometimes quite poetic terms used in them; dark flow, quantum foam, superstring etc. My starting point is therefore in science, but during the process my fictitious truths begin to bridge the gaps of true knowledge and the pieces become a reflection of my own inner world, rather than scientific cogitations. The moment when understanding ends, the infinite journey to the imagination begins.
Mon inspiration provient souvent d’articles de vulgarisation scientifique et des termes parfois très poétiques qu’ils véhiculent : courant noir, mousse quantique, mégafibres, etc. Mon point de départ est donc la science, mais au cours du processus, mes vérités fictives commencent à combler le manque de connaissance. L’œuvre devient alors plus un reflet de mon propre monde intérieur qu’un résultat de cogitations scientifiques. Le moment où l’entendement s’arrête, l’imagination commence.

I work with traditional graphic art methods like stone lithography and etching. In my works I also combine hand made natural color pigments, hand made paper and stitching. The starting point in my works is often the different meanings of natural colors, culture and art history, nature and literature. I live and work on Åland Islands, between Finland and Sweden.

Born in 1987, Pori, Finland. . Henna Tyrväinen (s. 1987, Pieksämäki) on Porissa asuva kuvataiteilija.
