It played the role of the gatekeeper monitoring the passerby and protecting the fortress. The current name widely called, ‘Dolharubang’ was newly named when it was designated as a cultural asset in 1971, and they were previously called with various names such as Suhoseok, Sumunjang, Janggunseok, Useokmok, Museokmok, Ongjungseok, Dolyeonggam, Durungmeori, Beoksumeori, etc. in each region. There were total of 48 Dolharubangs - 24 status divided to 8 statues each in front of east, west, and south gate of Jeju fortress, 12 statues divided to 4 statues each in front of east, west, and south gate of Jeongeui fortress, and 12 statues divided to 4 statues each in front of east, west, and south gate of Daejeong fortress. Sculpture method is far superior than Daejeonghyeon Castle and Jeongeuihyeon Castle, and the face forms are also diverse. Hat became sharp and higher, deep wrinkles are on the forehead, and the facial impression became much stronger with large ears, eyes, mouth, and nose. 제주성

Daejeong-hyeon Dolharubang is the smallest of the the Dolharubangs in the three regions with the height of about 134cm. The 12 statues in this region have similar sizes, and the sculpture technology seems to be relatively simple. The hat is somewhat small and the face is a little rec tangular, and there are rings around the eyes like glasses. It is unique with something around the neck.

National Folklore Museum in Seoul in 1960’s, so there are now total of 45 statues are remaining in Jejudo. You can see Dolharubangs of Jeju fortress at Gwandeokjeong, Jeju Folklore and Natural History Museum, Jeju University, Jeju City Hall, Jeju International Airport, Samseonghyeol, and Jeju KBS, etc. And you can see Dolharubangs of Jeongeui fortress at Seongeub Folk Village where Jeongeuihyeon used to be and Dolharubangs of Daejeong fortress at Boseong-ri, Daejeong-eub where Daejeong-hyeon used to be. Except Dolharubangs of Jeongeui fortress that found their original places after restoration and repair process, all are moved from their original locations, so you need to go around for a while to see them all. Dolharubans are all with body proportions of 2~3 head/body ratios and omitted lower half of the body, wearing hats of the soldier’s hat in old times with round ends and rims, and standing with both hands on their bellies. But they have unique characteristics according to each eub fortress.

Jeongeui Castle Dolharubang Seongeub-ri, Pyoseon-myeon, Seogwipo-si East, West, and South Gate of Jeongeuihyeon Castle (Seongeub Folklore Village) Dolharubang of Jeongeuihyeon Castle has the height of about 141cm, which is similar to Daejeong Dolharubang, the head is round and sculptured with volume, chin became thinner than Daejeong-hyeon, and the facial impression looks stronger with sharply raised eyes.

It will be more realistic if you see it yourself, but size, facial expression, expression of the hands, atmosphere, and sculpture finish are all different and the feelings are also quite different. While Dolharubangs of Jeju fortress have big bodies of the average height of 181cm, those of Jeongeui fortress are 141cm, and 136cm for Daejeong fortress, which are far shorter than the height of grownups and tidy. You can get the sense of magnanimous dignity of a soldier from Dolharubangs of Jeju fortress, but Dolharubangs of Jeongeui fortress have sharp but neat appearances, and Dolharubangs of Daejeong fortress are friendly, even cute. According to each Dolharubang, with many facial expressions that are felt solemn, sharp, brusque, or friendly, stone statue Dolharubangs of Jeju not only had the roles of patron saint and gatekeeper but also had protection function from evil that blocks evil energy. Let’s receive that noble energy of Dolharubangs that protected Jeju for a long period of time. Your journey in Jeju will be far more reassured.

Sara Orum(Mountaintop) Small Baekrok Sara Orum

Sara Orum Story In Sara Orum at 1324m level halfway of Halla Mountain, there is a mountaintop lake keeping the mystery of the ancient times, and it is as beautiful as being called a small Baekrokdam. It is also the 1st propitious grave site among 12 propitious sites of Jeju.

JEJU POWER SPOT GUIDE BOOK 제주의 건강한 기운을 따라 걷는 길

Healing jeju 힐링제주

To be on Saru Orum, it is better to hurry up from early in the morning. You have to follow Seongpanak course, and the climbing is restricted at the entrance of the course from 1PM. When you climb about 2 hours from the entrance of Seongpanak course, you arrive at the road to Sara Orum. You climbed up mountain road onto 1,300m altitude, so you will be naturally out of breath, and your legs will be stiff. As you catchup your breath and climb the steps, at the end of the road, tree tunnel is opened like a gate, and a space full of white mist is stretched out. When a cold wind blows from the tunnel, the mist becomes cleared up, and when you arrive at the end of the tunnel, your breath that reached up your throat becomes an exclamation and it has to flow out softly. Because the marvelous scenery of Sara Orum Mountaintop Lake is stretched right in front of your eyes. Lake embracing the mystery of the ancient times. It is the scenery that can explain the reason to be called a small Baekrokdam without anyone telling you. The crater lake that is not so deep sometimes shows its lake bed when there is not enough rainfall, and you are somewhat lucky if you see the lake with adequate amount of water. The circumference is about 250m, and the diameter is about 100m, which is about the size of a soccer field. The name of Sara Orum, ‘Sara’ is said to come from archaic word ‘Sol’ meaning ‘holy place’. It is, after all, the perfect name for the mountaintop lake located deep in the mountain where it is so quiet. Since the topography starts with the energy of Baekrokdam stops at Sara Orum and spreads eastward, this place is full of divine spirits. According to Feng-Shui Theory, this place has the topographic shape of Saengsachukwa(Live Snake Chasing Frog), a strong snake trying to catch and eat a frog, it is the top propitious grave site among the 6 propitious grave sites in Jeju. As fit for its fame as the top propitious grave site, even with its tough mountain topology, you can see some tombs here and there. Not just the energy of the

propitious site, but with such efforts, the descendents may well be paid off with prosperity. Perhaps by the energy of Halla Mountain filling this place, the tired body immediately becomes lighter. As you walk along the wooden deck place around the lake to the opposite side of the lake, exclamations keep coming out as you see different sceneries each time you move your step. Red pine mushrooms are laid down on the lake bed, and the water is so clear that you can see the tadpoles swimming around. Over the end of the deck, there is an observation platform that can look down the ridge of the opposite side of Sara Orum, many mountaintops spread underneath it, and the main peak of Halla Mountain. A telescope is installed for you to be able to look into here and there, and you can take a rest in a wide space. Wind blows frequently as if showing off the dignity of Halla Mountain. When you come back to the mountaintop lake, it is cleared up as if it is another world from the observation platform side, and a view different from a lake with deep mist is stretched. As you see the lake reflecting the sky like a mirror, all minds will be polished. It has the feeling of the cabbalistic energy fully filling the mountaintop lake and flows over the ridges. As you turn your back from Sara Orum that changes from moment to moment and touches you, and when you moved your not-wanting-to-turn-back steps away, time has often passed much longer than you thought, and the sun is high in the sky.

Jangsu(long life) trail leads the way to Byeoldobong. The trail continues for about 1.8km along the halfway up Byeoldobong. You may follow any direction, but it is recommended to go around in counterclockwise course. While you walk watching down the city, you will reach the coast, and the harmony of the shore cliff and the winding trail and the harmony of the stretched blue sky and the sea are fantastic. Byeoldobong with the shape of a sword is known as a propitious site. There are tombs of Oh’s at halfway up the mountain, and an interesting tale is passed down. This tomb site is located at a place where it looks like the sword is taken out a little from the sheath when entire Byeoldobong is seen as a sword. This tomb site was selected by a famous geomancer from the land. After the descendants of Oh’s buried their father there, to verify if the tomb site was properly selected, they let a female servant to enter the room of the geomancer. The geomancer couldn’t win over the seduction of the female servant and the drinking, and finally said, “it would have been better if the tomb site was at a little higher place.” As the master of the female servant hears the story from her, he said to the geomancer that he wanted to move the tomb site of the father to a little bit higher place and asked him to find the place. The geomancer worried that he would be harmed if he told such a great tomb site, but he had no choice but to find a new site for him. Instead, the geomancer asked him not to move the tomb until he arrives at the land. The geomancer, as soon as he left Jejudo and arrived at his home, he sat inside a jar and closed the lid in a hurry. But suddenly, a swarm of bees flew in and killed him, and it was because he told the propitious site, which should only be bestowed by heaven, even though not enough good deeds were accumulated.

Sanbang Mountain Story Sanbang Mountain that is said to be created by the top of Halla Mountain flying away and settling down. Will it be because of the excellent scenery? Healing jeju 힐링제주

There are as many as four sites for wishing on the road to Sanbanggulsa which is at the halfway to Sanbang Mountain, and it is interesting that they are all associated with the beautiful goddess, Sanbangdeoki. Long time ago, when Sanbang Mountain and Hwasun-ri underneath it are covered with forest, there was a person named Go Seong Mok. He, who used to be of a low class, became very rich since he started living at a place called big ground. He made a big orchard in Hwasun-ri, and lived there with a beautiful women, Sanbangdeoki, as a concubine. Go Seong Mok frequently went to the house of the concubine from his house at the big ground, and he even placed a tent made with the skins of several hundreds of pigs covering the road from his house to the house of the concubine to block the rain. With the news of Go Seong Mok living luxuriously with a beautiful concubine, the government surveyed the topology of the area he was living in. They found that he lived in the housing ground of geumgyeporan shape, which is the shape of a golden hen brooding eggs, so that he had to become rich, and no one knew if he could become a threat in the future. The government official, to dampen his energy and to take Sanbangdeoki, requested him many difficult tasks to make him in breach. But Go Seong Mok easily completed the tasks overnight, and the government official arrested him, determining that he is a dangerous person. Sanbangdeoki, who knew she will be also captured soon, flew away and entered Sanbanggul(cave). Sanbangdeoki was originally a goddess, not a human, and she came as a concubine to help Go Seong Mok, since he was not an ordinary man, and as she found

The place of wishing for honor you first come across on the road to Sanbanggul is said to be the propitious site that brings the birth of a great general or making a very rich person. In addition, it is said to make the wishes come true when people facing big events or tests make wish. The second site is the place of wishing for life, and it is said to be the place where old couple wishing everyday for a child first met Sanbangdeoki. It is the place for couples wishing a child. The third site is the place of wishing for love, and it is the place where the tears of Sanbangdeoki used to flow. Like the wishes of Sanbangdeoki who wanted an everlasting love, there is a tree of love that grows toward the village where the two people lived. The fourth site is the place of wishing for health, and it is the place where the tears of Sanbangdeoki, who returned to Sanbanggul, are collected. This place, where wriggling strange looking rocks are spread along the coast, has the legend of Ho Jong Dan, who was dispatched from China long time ago, cut the head part of the dragon to cut the vein of the dragon. But you can still fill the energy of the dragon breathing and preparing to ascend to heaven.

Yongmeori coast located in Sagye-ri, Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo-si is a place where you can feel the strong inducement and strength for you to have to come to it at least once, if you looked it down from Sanbang Mountain. The visiting hours are set, and it may be restricted according to the situation of the sea, so you have to check the time and weather before departure. The first thing you see from the entrance is the road going down following the steep stairs with precipitous sedimentary layered rock walls on both sides. As you arrive at the end of the stairs while looking at the blue sea over the end, when you look back, you feel a different dignity from what you see from the top. After you pass through a big hole in the side of the rock wall, the scenery of the irregular but beautiful sedimentary layer cliff is stretched. In the middle of the cliff, the cracks as if cut with blade are here and there. The sound of the waves raging into the deep gaps crashes into here and there of the cliff, and it sounds like a roaring. The legend of Yongmeori coast is interesting. A threatening event occurred to Qin Shi Huang who raged his power all around the world such as unifying China for the first time in history and building the Great Wall of China. When one looked into the Chinese geomantic principles book, it said that an absolute emperor outdoing him will be born in Tamra soon. Qin Shi Huang dispatched a geomancer Ho Jong Dan to Tamra. As Ho Jong Dan arrived in Tamra, he moved from east to west to find and cut the veins and meridians. Ho Jong Dan, who arrived at the boundary of Sanbang Mountain, saw the energy of a dragon riding on the vein of Sanbang Mountain and preparing to jump into the wide sea, and found out that the place

was the vein of an emperor. After Ho Jong Dan hit and cut the tail and back of the dragon, and at the moment to hit the head, with the sky striking groaning sound, dark red blood bursted and became a big hill. They say that, if the disconnected blood vein is connected again by building stone towers on the tail of the remaining Yongmeori vein, with the energy of the dragon ascending to heaven, you will have your wishes come true. As you follow the alley along the road to the north from Seohong intersection in Seogwipo, you come across Jijang Saem on the side of the road. It is arranged with flat stones, and there is a tiled roof over the spring of Jijang Saem. In Jijang Saem, as if it boasts its clear water, small fish with their name unknown are swimming. Its size is small, but the story associated with it is very interesting. It was the time the Chinese geomancer Ho Jong Dan carried the geography book around to cut the veins of Tamra. As he arrived at Hongro(Seohong-dong, Seogwipo-si), and it was around when he went and came many times to find the ground vein with superior water energy as written in the geography book. A farmer was plowing a field, and an old man with white hair rushed with white face and said, “Please scoop up one bowl of water from there and place it under sogilma(cow pannier). If a dog comes and sniff the water, please chase it away, and if someone comes and asks something, please say that you don’t know anything.” And then the old man disappeared soon. The farmer nod the head slantwise, but to do as urgently asked by the old man, he filled his hanggi(brassware), which was his lunch bowl, with the water from the spring, and placed it as asked. Then the springing water of the village completely dried up and left no trace. After a little, a dog came to where the spring used to be to sniff the smell, and came to the sogilma, where hanggi was hidden, to sniff. The farmer chased away the dog by swinging a club. Soon Ho Jong Dan came looking around and asked the farmer where ‘hanggi water under twisted tree’ is, but the farmer answered that it was the first time to hear such name. The geomancer tempted by saying he would make the

Ho Jong Dan thought the geography book was wrong, so he ripped the book and went back. The old man appeared again, and thanked him by saying, “I am the god of water guarding this spring, and Ho Jong Dan from China tried to cut the water meridian.” The farmer asked him about ‘hanggi water under twisted tree’ that he was curious about. The old man said that since sogilma was made of a twisted tree, it is the twisted tree, and the spring water in hanggi is the hanggi water, and told the farmer to take out the hanggi hidden under sogilma to pour the water into the dried up spring. As the farmer followed the instructions, water started to be filled and flow over in the dried up spring. They say that it was the spring hidden wisely, so they started calling it as Jijang Saem or Jijang Cheon. The water here is still cold and clear. Will it be because of the continued protection by the god of the water? It is not dried up in the worst drought, and it is mysterious to have uniform amount of spring water all the time. Jonjaam is located in Bullae orum of Yeongsil Course which is southwestern climbing trail of Halla Mountain. The way to Jonjaam is from the parking lot ticket office which is the starting point of Yeongsil Course. The trail, which is well arranged with wood and gravels, is comfortable for walking and the maple trees are covering the road like a tunnel, thus reaching its climax in Autumn. As you climb for about 20 minutes crossing a few small bridges in the middle, you arrive at Jonjaam. This place, leaning its back against Bullae orum and looking down the sea, is felt as a propitious site at a glance. The temple has a solemn climate mixed with the shape of the mountain. According to ‘Jonjaam Jungsugi’ written by Chungam Kim Jeong who was banished to Jejudo in Aug. 1520, and it said “Jonjaam was established when the progenitors of Jeju people, three families(Go·Yang·Bu), first rose, and it lasted for a long time after Jeju · Daejeong · Jeogneui hyeons became like pine groves. When it becomes April, a good day was picked, and one from the three leaders of the three eubs was selected for ablution and ritual in this temple, and this was the Gukseong ritual”, thus it tells us that Jonjaam was established long time ago, and it was a state protection temple that held Gukseong ritual wishing for prosperity of the state and peace without accident. It was also recorded in Dongkukyeojiseungram and Tamraji, and in Dajanggyeong and Beobjugi in Goryo Dajanggyeong, it has the record of “Sixth disciple, Baltara Jonja, among 16 Jonjas, who are the disciples of Sakyamuni, preached Buddhism in Tammolaju(refers to old name of Jeju, Tamra)”. This is the recording that supports the possibility that Buddhism was brought to Jeju through seaway far before Goguryo or Baekje. The meaning of Bullae Orum, where Jonjaam

You can feel the extraordinary energy from the entrance of Geumsan park. On both sides of the road for the visitors guided by wide wooden steps, thick warm-temperate forest screens the whole sky, so it is cool even during the mid summer. This place known to have more than 60 warm-temperate plants is the only evergreen tree forest remained in the flatland in the western region of Jeju-si. It is valuable as a scientific resource for the study of the primitive vegetation, and it is designated as a natural monument. Until a natural village was formed in the surrounding in about 1670, they say that this place was not a forest. When it was seen from the village in the aspect of Feng-Shui theory, Geumakbong had the shape of a fire, and if its view was not blocked it could not escape from the disaster of fire, so the people of the village at that time planted trees intentionally and prohibited grazing and logging. Thus, the name of this place was ‘Geumsan’, with Geum meaning of prohibition, for a long time. As hundreds of years pass by protecting the trees, a number of trees grew to become a forest with beautiful scenery, and now the village changed its name to ‘Geumsan’ with Geum meaning silk. With the fine energy emitted by the forest, an energy wishing for the safety of the village is added, so the energy in Geumsan should have been extraordinary. This energy reaches its zenith when you arrive at the village altar located in Geumsan Park. It is the place that Geumsan Park, which protects the village, embraces the altar that protects the people of the village. Nabeub-ri village ceremony held here every year is designated as an intangible cultural asset. Jejudo village ceremonies have shamanism village ceremonies arranged by women and poje, that is Confucianism village ceremony, arranged by men. Nabeub-ri village ceremony is held as a poje. Bangseon Gate and Ten Sceneries of Yeongju Bangseonmun valley with the greetings of white shining strange rocks and bizarre stones. It is surrounded by thick forest so that it seems to be completely disconnected from outside world, and this valley with mystique energy is the point where the streams flowing down from Halla Mountain Tamra valley and Yeolanji mountaintop meet each other. A huge rock catches your eyes. A big hole leaking the light coming from the direction of Halla Mountain, and this was called as Bangseonmun, which means ‘gate for the visit of Taoist hermits’, from old times. Halla Mountain itself, which is one of the three god mountains with Taoist hermits and medicinal herbs of eternal youth and immortality, is sometimes seen as a god, so it also has the meaning of the first gate going to meet the Halla Mountain god. As you climb up toward Halla Mountain, there is the point of the two streams become one with a tall strange rock standing, and there is a small pond called ‘small baby cow’ in the right side. There is a legend associated with it. Long time ago, on boknal each year, the fairies from heaven came down and took bath, and Halla Mountain god had to come outside Bangseonmun to human world and had to stay until they return. But on one boknal, Halla Mountain god who could not come out of Bangseonmun in time saw the fairies having bath. So the furious Great Jade Emperor in heaven made Halla Mountain god a white deer. Afterwards, Halla Mountain god went up to Baekrokdam on boknal every year and wept sadly. Some say that the name Baekrokdam, the pond of white deer, came from this story. ‘Small baby cow’, which was the pond of the bathing of the fair-

Sancheondan and Gomsol The magnificent view of the black pine trees stretching toward the sky lets you straighten your thoughts. The black pine tree designated as a natural monument is estimated to be 500~600 years old, and it is known as the oldest black pine tree in Korea. Under the eight big trees with dignity, the altar with moss receives the sunlight leaked from the branches to add to the mystique atmosphere. Sancheondan was the place for religious ritual for the mountain spirit, Halla Mountain god. It used to be held at Baekrokdam, but since the time for the ritual was winter and some died of cold to climb to Baekrokdam, so Jeju governor Yak Dong Lee moved the ritual to this place in 1470(1st year of Seongjong). The mountain spirit ritual altar remains intact. An ‘gijeokbi’(achievement recording stone) is also erected in remembrance of the governor Yak Dong Lee. When a god comes to the human world, they say that he rested on a big holy tree for a while. The black pine tree here seems so high that it may even stop the passerby cloud, and it feels that Halla Mountain god would come down any moment.

JEJU POWER SPOT GUIDE BOOK 제주의 건강한 기운을 따라 걷는 길

Healing jeju 힐링제주

Seongeub Village and Yeongju Mountain Yeongju mountain is the mountaintop with the dignifying feeling even from at a distance. It is one of the few mountaintops that are called mountains. ‘Yeongju’ is another name of Halla Mountain. The exact reason for this mountaintop to attain the name Yeongju is not passed down, but some say that it may be because it was considered holy as a deglomeration of Halla Mountain. This mountaintop, more mysterious with such reason, is said to form an important ground vein coming from Sara Orum and Seongneol Orum in the east of Hall Mountain to southeast of Seongpanak. They say the energy of this place looks down and protects the old Jeongeui-hyeon, which is now Seongeub village. You can climb Yeongju mountain freely through the neatly made wooden stair trail and along the ridge of the mountain with stretched grass. As you climb along the grass ridge with wide open view, you may pass by freely grazing cows, and after a while, a real mountain trail appears between the soaring trees in halfway of the mountain. These are also steps made with flat wood, and it is not difficult to climb. At the end of the steps connected to the top in almost straight line, there is the blue sky. It looks like the steps to heaven. When you finish climbing the gently curving stairs near the top, the wide stretching full view arouses your admiration. As you slowly walk along the road on the top with the shape of a crescent moon, and as you look down the world below the mountaintop, you may understand the heart of the mountain god protecting the village.

Sincheon ranch in Sincheon-ri Seongsan-eub is very unusually right next to a beach. The scenery is fantastic with soft green grass of the wide ranch, coastal line of black basalt, and deep blue sea. As you walk a while along the coastal line of the ranch westward, strange looking big rocks catch your eyes. The sea surrounding these strange rocks called ‘Kalseondori’ and ‘Changgomdol’ is Yonggung Olle, that is the passage to Yonggung(Sea Palace), and an interesting legend is passed down. Since the old times, this place had deeper water level compared to other seas, and the female divers avoided this sea. But female diver Song was good at underwater work and daring, so she entered this sea often. One day, as she worked under the sea, she found a huge abalone, and as soon as she pricked it with her pike, she passed out. When she woke up, a dog came and wagged its tail to behave as if asking to follow it. As she followed the dog, another world appeared with many houses like palace and people in fancy clothes come and go. A pretty girl came to Song, who was looking around absent-minded, and asked who she was. She told the girl what happened, and the girl said that the place was Namhae Yonggung, and if she was discovered by Sea Emperor, she will be killed, and the girl offered help for way out to the human world. But she requested never to look back. When Song was about to come out of Yonggung, she wanted to see that beautiful world one more time, and looked back. Immediately, everything became dark, and a frightful gatekeeper with sword was blocking her way! Song begged the scolding gatekeeper for her life since she had to support her old parents. The gatekeeper pitted her old parents and let her live, and the dog appeared again to lead the way. As soon as she

came out of Yonggung Olle, a sharp rock rose from the water. That rock is ‘Kalseondori’ named for its shape of ‘Bridge of a shape of a blade standing upside down’. Another strange rock as unusual as Kalseondori is ‘Changgomdol’. It is a rock with a hole of a size that a person can go through, and it means a rock with a hole made by spear. It may as well be the hole for the gatekeeper to guard the passage to Yonggung. Yonggung Olle has the meaning of both warning for rough sea, that may easily harm you, and the protection. Perhaps with such reason, Kalseondori has sharp but warm feeling, and the wind blowing through the hole of Changgomdol has tough but holy feeling. Maybe, for someone who cultivated a lot of virtues, wouldn’t the Changgomdol become a key hole and open a passage to Yonggung someday?

The word Saryeoni in Saryeoni Forest Trail, which is designated as the biosphere preservation area by UNESCO in 2002, comes from old dialect ‘Salani’ or ‘Solani’, and ‘Sal’ or ‘Sol’ in these words mean holy place or spiritual place. That means Saryeoni Forest is a holy forest. Even from the road coming to this place, you feel unusual holiness and freshness, and when you put your first step into the forest, that feeling gets even thicker. A thick natural forest with various trees such as queritron, snowbell, cornelian cherry, retinispora, and Japanese cedar, and with live ecology of badger, Jeju weasel, fairy pitt, and goshawk, continues for about 15km, and about 10km section leading from Mulchat Orum to Red Orum is open for public. There is a bus route connecting the two entrances, so it is convenient to use a bus to go back. A long flatland forest trail, which is rare in Jeju with lots of orums, continues for all men and women, young and elderly to be able to easily take a walk, and you can even see families carrying a stroller time to time. There are various plant groups and there is a theme in each section of the course, so long and flat trail is not boring. If you visit this place in early spring, you can see adonis plant colony with short yellow flowers in bloom. Adonis that is said to call upon spring is a magical flower that has such a strong vitality that it breaks through snow and ice with its own emitting heat and blooms. When the summer gets close and other plants boasts their green colors, it silently gets asleep under the ground for half a year. As you walk through the course, you may sometimes see roe deers which are said to be mystical creatures of Halla Mountain. In addition, you can feel the holy atmosphere coming from the primitive vitality that is emitted from the many mixed life forms. Such Saryeoni Forest

Water for good health and long life On the coast of Hagwi-ri Aewol-eub, a spring water named ‘Geoseurin Water’ springs. From the end of the road leading to that place to Geoseurin Water, it is connected by stepping stones. While you cross over on the stepping stones with large rocks making a gentle curve, you can have the fun of going back to childhood. The spring water here is unlike other spring waters that flows from Halla Mountain toward the sea, and it retrogresses toward Halla Mountain. The name ‘Geoseurin Water’ or ‘Geosirin Water’ comes from that reason. There are two streams. One is the dongchulseoryu, which springs in the east and flows westward, and the other is seochuldongryu, which springs in the west and flows eastward, and they come together to form one pond. Such mysterious phenomenon made the village to consider this spring water holy. They say that you can live a long life using this water springing with the energy of retrogression, and the people of the village sometimes make wishes here. Time to time, shamanism ceremonies are held here to wish for happiness. As you feel the energy of retrogressing mysterious water and the breath of the aching cold water, it is worthwhile to wish for good health and long life and happiness of you and your family.

‘Gun Mountain’ is usually known as named for its shape resembling a military tent. The old name was ‘Gunmeorum’ or ‘Gulmeorum’, and some say that it has the meaning of a mountain suddenly rose later, or a mountain seen as a shadow in mist when it was first risen. Some say that ‘Seo Mountain’, an auspicious mountain rose with explosion of volcano in 1007(10th year of Mokjong) in Goryo dynasty is this mountaintop. This mountaintop, having many stories associated with its name, has an unusual shape accompanied by many spectacles, stories, and places to be able to receive unusual energies. The top of Gun Mountain has a very unique shape as if someone intentionally placed a rock. On a day with good weather, you can see not only the main peak of Halla Mountain, but also the group of the mountaintops stretched underneath, Beom Island, Forest Island, and Mun Island on the front coast of Seogwipo, Baksugijeong and Sanbang Mountain with unusual flat land in high ground, Brother Island and Gapado seen at the end of Songak Mountain coast, and Marado, which is the southernmost land of Korea. The area of the top, where it is said that two peaks rose from the head of a dragon, is the place where ritual for rain used to be held. It is known as propitious site, but there is no tomb. They said that having tomb here will bring big drought or rainy season, so this place was prohibited for tombs from the old times. But perhaps because the mountaintop itself is a propitious site, there are many tombs underneath the top. Strange rocks standing here and there in the mountaintop catch your eyes. The first voyage ship to Udo starts after 7AM, so to see the Sunrise Wish-Come-True Chair at the time of the sunrise, you have to enter the island on the previous day and stay overnight. Udo is an island with abundant spectacles. To find the quite famous 8 sceneries of Udo and properly enjoy, one night’s stay is too short. When you pass the wish-making stone pagoda road with the stone pagoda stacked up by people making wishes, you enter Dolkani coast, and if you look at the direction of Udobong from here on a rainy day, you can see a waterfall. It is called ‘Biwasa Waterfall’ because it is a waterfall that is only created when it rains. ‘Bi’ means rain, and ‘wasa’ is the Jeju dialect of ‘waya’(only when it comes), so the name is very interesting. Geommeolle coast is a coast made with black sand. This place is famous for hot sand bath that cures skin diseases. When you go eastward a while from Geommeolle coast, thre is a building called Udo Leisure on the coast side. If you wish to see ‘Juganmyeongwol’, which is the first scenery of the 8 sceneries of Udo, you may request to ride a boat here. Juganmyeongwol means ‘moon in daylight’. It is the phenomenon of sunlight reflected on the sea water and making the reflection on the ceiling inside a sea cave of the coastal cliff, and its shape is as pretty as the moon. There are many people making wishes here. You can only see it during 10AM~11AM, so you have to plan it well. You can enjoy the real spectacle of Udo on the way to the cave. Especially, the projected coastal cliff has the shape of a black dragon with Yeoeuiju in its mouth, so it has a out-of-the-world feeling. When you move toward northeast of Udo along the coastal road, you can see Hagosudong beach made of white sand. If you follow the road leading to the east from here, there is a bridge connecting to

Songdangbonhyang Dang and Dang Orum Songdangbonhyandang was famous for its scale and strong divine power since the old times. Perhaps with such reason, the name of the orum where this shrine is located is also Dang Orum. At the foot of Dang Orum, as you pass the trail with camellia, you will see Songdangbonhyangdang with a building with roof tile and a wide yard. Songdangbonhyangdang is known as the root of Jeju village shrines. There is a story that if gut(exorcism) is performed without following the rules of gut in this shrine or if any of the contents is incorrect during the ceremony, the exorcist will not be able to live long. It is that the divine power of the shrine is so strong. There is also a story of a policeman in Japanese colonial period who cut down the hackberry tree which was the divine tree of the shrine, the tree shed blood, and the policeman died because of that. Bonpuli of Sondangbonhyangdang, that is the history of this shrine, is interesting. Socheonguk is the god of hunting, and Geumbaekju is the goddess of farming. Socheonguk who rose from Halla Mountain married to Geumbaekju and had 18 sons and 28 daughters. Geumbaekju asked Socheonguk to cultivate farm for the children who pestered for clothes, food, and milk. As Socheonguk plows the field, a passerby monk asked to share lunch, so he thought the monk would eat part of it, but the monk eat it all and fled. Socheonguk, being hungry, killed the cow plowing the field and broiled the cow for meal, and he even ate cows owned by others, and tied up the plow to his body and started to plow the field. Geumbaekju, being angry, said she could not live with him, and

It is the story that tells Songdangbonhyangdang is the progenitor of several shrine gods in Jeju. Waheulbonhyangdang(Waheul Home Shrine) The divine tree of Waheulbonhyangdang is so huge that it automatically brings exclamation. You can say that since the divine tree covers entire shrine of a quite wide space having a size of two school rooms. Along the round stone wall, there is a stair shaped place, and at the center, there is the altar keeping ‘Sansintto’, which is the main god of the shrine. And strangely, there is another small altar in one corner of the shrine, and ‘Seojeongseung’s daughter goddess tablet’ is placed. The history of the shrine tells the story. The main god of this place was originally the daughter of Seojeongseung, who was a single with three babies and caring the village. Afterwards, one legged old man in this village did the matchmaking and she met the eleventh son of Songdang Geumbaekju goddess, ‘Sansintto’. He was a god living freely on hunting in Halla Mountain. They fell in love at the first sight, and started to live together. The pregnant goddess suddenly wanted to eat pork maybe because of morning sickness. Usually, the shrine gods were prohibited from pork, so she soothed the morning sickness by the smell from burning a few pig hair. When the husband came back from outside, he said that he couldn’t share rituals with a person with dirty appetite, and expelled the wife. Thus, Sansintto took the altar and the offering by himself, and the expelled goddess established a small room in the east corner. Mysteriously, most of the thick branches of the hackberry tree, the divine tree, are stretched toward the altar where the goddess is seated. Other trees are also leaned toward this altar, so the side of the altar of the male god seems to be a little lonely. The people of the village seem to be leaned toward the goddess rather the male god.

Wolpyeongdarakutdang Darakutdang is the home shrine of Wolpyeongdong and Yeongpyeongdong. It is located on a high hill, and shows an unusual scenery. As you climb up hill following the wooden steps next to the road, the shrine olle road guiding the curved road to the entrance of the shrine is very beautiful. At the end, you see the entrance of the shrine that looks like a cave. You have to bend your neck and waist to enter the shrine because of the low tree cast. Will it be because of the energy of the god. Fully lowered behavior is rather natural with the attitude. It looks dark from outside, but once you enter the shrine, the inside has a mysterious feeling with the sunlight shedding through the branches of the tree covering like a roof. Vivid 3 colored cloths and small scale make it cute and comforting. Compared to other thick and huge divine trees, it is unique to have Erecta Fig with several thin branches stretched as the divine tree. In this shrine, Sansin Great King and Eungiseonseunnotgiseonseung, the couple gods are seated, and ‘Heomulhalmang Aegitto’ associated with infant care is also seated. According to the history of the shrine, the male god ‘Sansinbaekgwan’ ate a meat, and became an unjust god of hunting livestock farming and sitting under baram, and the goddess, ‘Eungiseonseungnnotgiseonseung’ is a foreign goddess came from Gangnam Cheonjaguk, a goddess of farming and bearing and raising, and a clean god sitting above the baram. Healing jeju 힐링제주

Aegieobgaedang It is located at the coastal cliff near the wharf, so it can be easily found. When you stand there, Songak Mountain, Sanbang Mountain, and Halla Mountain seem to be within reach, so it offers another scenery that is different from the main island of Jeju. The scenery of Aegieobgaedang is beautiful, but the story is sad and pitiful. One day, Mrs. Lee who lived in Moseulpo found a very young female baby in the bushes, brought her home and raised her like a daughter. When she became about 8 years old, Mrs. Lee had her first baby. The girl naturally became an Aegieobgae who cared for the baby. At that time, no one lived in Marado, but it had abundant seafood such as conch and abalone, so the female divers from Gapado or Moseulpo used to come to catch them. One day, they came to the island with Aegieobgae for the work, but wave became tougher and they couldn’t leave the island. As the food was almost gone and it was difficult to hold out any longer, the female drivers were told in their dreams that they had to leave Aegieobgae in the island to be able to leave safely. They decided to do as told in the dream after agonizing. The female drivers. who left Aegieobgae in the island, could come back safely, but Aegieobgae cried to the abandoning boat, wept, and finally fell down. In the next year, when the female drivers went back to Marado, there were only the skiny bones of Aegieobgae left there. How to get there Marado would not pass it by. You shall visit this shrine first with pious mind when you arrive at Marado. And try to understand the heart of Aegieobgae who was sacrificed but became the goddess protecting the island. When you stand in front of the shrine with the sea wind blowing from the back and look down the widely stretched grass field, you can always feel the warmth as if you became a baby on the back of Aegieobgae who always protects the people in the island. As you slowly look around with that warm energy, you will be able to taste another different taste of the travel in Marado.
