Presidents Corner Hello Everyone, It has been a long winter for many across the country but, right on schedule the weather is warming up and it’s time to hit the trails. Also, show season is knocking at the door so I know many are starting to put the final touches on those young horses or tuning up the older ones. We have gotten some exciting things accomplished in the first quarter of the year. Thanks to all the stall owners for your cooperation during the much needed process of getting all the buildings treated for termites. This should not have to be repeated for several years to come. Also, the board has approved a bid from Funware Development to update our software system. This is an exciting project that will began in the second quarter of the year. The end process will enable us to do some huge things with our system as well as most importantly protect our registry information. Thank you so much to the members that donated money so we could get this much needed project moving forward. We have been working to provide our facility to other organizations. The Mid America Foxtrotting Horse Breed Association will be having their Grand Slam on the grounds July 11 - 13. Camper spots will be first come first serve at $25 per day for each day your camper is in the spot. Something to consider is to store your camper in our storage area from the 3 year old Futurity through the Celebration for only $50. The Heart of America Walking Horse Association will be having a show May 18th. I think it will be very exciting to see the Tennessee Walking Horses going around our beautiful arena. We are also working on some ranch horse competitions in the Versatility arena to possibly be announced at a later date. Thank you to all our Committee Chairs and their committees for all the work they have already done to ensure we have a successful year. The Futurity and Celebration show schedules have been approved and are on the website. Hope to see everyone soon at a show or at the 3 year old Futurity June 5 – 8, 2019. As always feel free to contact me with any concerns. Happy Fox Trotting, Mark Mackie MFTHBA President

Out and About in Illinois By Cindy Fonken Photos by Cindy Fonken
High Knob is near Equality Illinois in the Shawnee National Forest. This campground is open year round & has 150 sites in 5 areas with 90 box stalls, a store, 7 cabins, bath house, wash rack and the River To River Trail ( 200 mile trail from the Ohio River to the Mississippi River) right out your door! Seven separate trails lead into the forest from this camp to places like Garden of the Gods, Knights of the Golden Circle, Twin Towers, Buzzards Roost,
Hurricane Bluff, Initial Tree, Dolan’s Grave, Dragon’s Head, Teepee, Whiskey Cave, Rice Hollow, Mushroom Rock & Cowboys Hideout just to name a few- beautiful riding & easy to follow map, although we did go into the store every morning for JoJo’s directions so we wouldn’t miss anything and to listen to her stories of the area. Did I say beautiful riding?! Spectacular!!

Michigan Fox Trotter Versatility Challenge By Kathy Kruch
The MFTA Versatility Challenge is designed to show how versatile our Fox Trotter breed can be. We have 5 members competing in the Versatility Challenge and its getting near the end of the challenge. Our competitors participated in trail rides in and out of state, camped with their horses, participated in clinics, training, and many activities. We will offer this next year and will have 2 categories, adult class and young horses not under saddle. Adult class is competing with your Fox Trotter with a list of activities showing the horses versatility. Not under saddle can include bathing, standing for farrier, ponying and more. There are several options for prizes including embroidery on shirts, a MFT embodied jacket, belt buckle and patches. In 2019 we will be relying on feedback from our membership to make improvements and possibly add a youth class. To sign up for the Versatility Challenge call Kathy Kruch @ 989-390-1838 or log on to our website and click on activities. www.michiganfoxtrotters.com.

Spring Fun With Foaling By Jen Gaffke Photos by Jen Gaffke
Spring is a wonderful time of year and certainly a welcome change from the rigors of Winter. Spring time for horse enthusiasts is an especially happy and busy time because it is, traditionally baby time. Experienced breeders already know the drill when it comes to foaling time. However, even experienced breeders get surprised. Some surprises are good and some are not. In order to cut down on the chances of the bad surprises one must start with a healthy mare and provide the best prenatal care you can. Nutrition is a key component to building a healthy foal and ensuring that the mare is still healthy at parturition and up to the rigors of producing enough milk for the little one. Fescue grass and fescue hay is not a good choice for pregnant mares. Fescue contains an endophyte that causes Fescue Toxicosis, which poses a variety of dangers to both mare and foal. Click the above link to read more in depth about fescue toxicosis. A balanced diet and no sudden dietary changes are very important, she can still founder if allowed to have all the grain she wants. Getting overly fat and out of condition will not get good results either. According to Dr. Rick Smith of Equine Clinic “Pregnant mares during early to mid gestation require little if any special changes to their diet if they are in good body condition. During the last 3 months of gestation, the foal will gain more than half of it’s eventual birth weight, therefore, a gradual increase in quantity and/or quality of feed will be required to enable the mare to continue Do: consistent weight gain throughout her • feed your mare nutritious food with clean pregnancy.” Keeping your mare parasite water. free is essential to her health and the • keep up with appropriate deworming and growing foal, however timing is very vaccinations important. Dr. Smith has the following • keep her hooves properly trimmed caution, “While regular deworming is • consult with a reputable equine recommended (every 6-8 weeks), it is veterinarian not advisable to deworm your mare Don’t: during the first 60 days of gestation • feed fescue grass/hay when the fetal organs are forming, nor • overfeed during the last 30 days of gestation.”(See • allow her hooves to become overgrown or figure 1)
unbalanced • deworm at inappropriate times

Keeping your horse properly vaccinated is always important, pregnant mares are no exception. Since the ideology of what and when to vaccinate changes will advancements in equine medicine here are two links for the most current information. Thanks to Beth at the Equine Clinic for pointing out the American Association of Equine Practitioners website. Adult Vaccinations Foal vaccinations Always consult with your equine veterinarian when administering medications to your horse/foal. Remember that as your mare gets further along in her pregnancy she may exhibit some moodiness, be patient with her and keep stress to a minimum. Keep her feet healthy and properly trimmed. *We would love to see your foal pictures! If you have baby pictures you would like to share please send them (in .jpg format) to: blossomridgefarm@gmail.com and use “foal pic in the subject line. Submissions will appear in our next issue.
