Presidents Corner Hello, I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and a Merry Christmas. Now that we are in a new year of 2018, I would like to start with a personal Thank You to everyone, especially our members, for their patience and support during 2017. I have been in office for just over a year now and I have learned a lot. This isn’t an easy job for any of us on the board, but I have found it to be very fulfilling. In knowing I have helped this association the best I could with the help of the board. We have accomplished a lot and we have a lot left that we are wanting to accomplish. It is imperative that we work together for the betterment of the breed and this association. I have insisted that everything we do as a board is to be handled in an upfront and forthright manner. That everything we handle to be done in open session in front of the membership. I will continue to insist upon it, simply for the reason that our members will know what we are trying to accomplish. That way the membership will have the opportunity to have input and share any ideas they might have. I ran for office on those principals and I will continue to carry out my campaign promises. One of my goals for this board is to maintain our grounds. We are one of the only breeds that own our own show grounds. I am proud of this fact but it also takes planning to keep up with such a large facility. By owning our own grounds, we must take care of our aging infrastructure. This is a pressing issue for us that serve on this board. We are working very hard on coming up with solutions to better handle the issues we are now facing as far as maintenance that is required. We will have to do a little at a time as our funds allow. If you attended the Show and Celebration in 2017, you know that we have an aging water system and some things we have no choice to fix as they arise. I would like to thank everyone again for your patience while we fixed our water problems during our show. Thanks to everyone who helped in making our repair go as smoothly as it did. Your help was very much appreciated and I apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused. I would like to encourage everyone to join the association. We offer a lot of different programs in hopes to include all aspects of our breed. We have several programs for our trail riders that can be found on our website. I encourage everyone to checkout all of our programs to see if you may find one that could possibly encourage you to participate within the association. We as a board want to encourage all disciplines of our breed. In closing, I would once again like to thank everyone for your continued support of myself and our Board of Directors. I am here to help the membership. Feel free to contact me anytime if you may have a concern, question, or even if you would just like to visit. Thank You, Aaron Stanifer President

News from the Board
Your MFTHBA Board of Directors conducted their annual workshop to welcome new board members and set goals for 2018. It was a busy and productive day. The process included developing a long term Strategic Plan for the Association that includes the following elements, in no particular order of importance. Improve our communication with the membership. This newsletter is an example of that effort to push out information concerning board discussions and actions taken in a timely manner. Our expectation here is to encourage membership participation in our decision making process. Improve our existing programs or develop new programs designed to increase membership, transfers and registrations, and better market the Missouri Fox Trotting Horse. Begin the process of replacing our current database and computer systems. This was considered a high priority item by the Board. We discussed the need for a new system that is fully integrated, enhances work flow and productivity at the office, improves record keeping and encourages membership participation. Our goal for 2018 is to identify a system that meets those priorities and begin purchasing and conversion by the end of the year. Improve membership engagement. This includes improving engagement of our members outside of Missouri. We discussed emphasizing our families and youth at our Spring Show and adding opportunities for youth participation in all regions of the Association. Adding clinics for versatility, judging and other disciplines was also mentioned. It will take the active participation of our Affiliates to achieve this goal.
Strengthen Board and Committee Leadership. We understand that the Board and the Committees that support it can only be effective if we have people serving in these positions that will put the best interest of the Association ahead of all else when discharging their duties. We will be taking a “Start Fresh” approach to re-examine the roll of each committee and seek member volunteers to serve who are committed to achieving the goals outlined in this Strategic Plan. Improve our current Judging System. Our areas of concern and focus will be the number and location of judges clinics and the process of selecting judges for the shows. Any rule book changes that are deemed necessary as a result of this process will be made for the 2019 season. Address the long terms needs of our Showgrounds. We understand that the short term maintenance costs are rising as a result of aging water, electrical and sewage systems. Solving this problem will take a significant investment. To insure the long term viability of the grounds we need to consider arena improvements and design changes that could generate additional revenue. It was a great workshop and your Board is looking forward to serving you, the membership, in 2018. Stay Engaged and pass along any comments or ideas that will help achieve or Strategic Plan to your Regional Representative. Until Next Time MFTHBA Board of Directors

Ranch Sorting is not just for Quarter horses anymore, it is becoming a popular sport for Foxtrotter enthusiasts. The first ranch sorting clinics, held during the 2016 World Show and Celebration, were very well received and it was clear that people were interested in future clinics. MFTHBA partnered with Cornerstone LLC of Alton, MO to put on the clinics and they did more clinics in 2017 at the both the Spring Show and Three Year Old Futurity and the World Show and Celebration in September. Jeff Holman, of Cornerstone LLC, said he and his team had a lot of fun putting on the clinics in Ava and they had over 110 teams participate in the Jackpot competition that was held for clinic attendees. He is looking forward to 2018 and February 2018 The Journal 5
expects as many as 200 teams to participate. Mr. Holman hopes to see awards for Open Grand Champion and Junior Grand Champion in Ranch Sorting as early as next year. He said the sport is really growing. Mr. Holman hosts weekly clinics every Tuesday night, beginning in April at his arena near Alton, MO. The cost for these weekly clinics is $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Although registration is not required for these clinics you are encouraged to call ahead for additional information. That number is 417-331-4105 and their website is http://cornerstonearena.com/ Anna Sutherland participated in the clinics held during the Spring Show and Celebration. She said that she and her husband Taler both enjoyed the clinics and they showed their horses that night in the model and performance classes. Anna Sutherland says that it is a testament to the versatility of these horses and feels that her mare, Gracie, benefits from the variety of doing such very different events. She explained that Gracie seemed to be getting a little bit bored with the show ring but after working some cattle she was sharper and more interested. When asked what the biggest challenge was to trying the ranch sorting with her horses, Mrs Sutherland said that their other mare had never seen a cow before and she didn’t quite know what to think about that. She went on to explain that by allowing her horse time to check out the cows and become comfortable with them it was not long before both her horses were moving cows. “We actually won some money” she said excitedly. Anna Sutherland points out that if you have already built a good relationship with your horse, if that trust is there, they want to work for you. Her best advice for a new person interested in the sport of ranch sorting, “go to a clinic, just show up and try it but be patient with yourself and your horse.” February 2018 The Journal 6

Arizona Fox Trotter Association Donates Funds to MFTHBA Database Update Effort The Arizona Fox Trotter Association has notified the MFTHBA that they are dissolving and will be donating their remaining organization funds to support the MFTHBA database update. “After a long search our board has decided to donate the $9,118.92 balance in our treasury to the MFTHBA to be used for the designated purpose to upgrade the MFTHBA computer system,” shared AFTA President Clare Ross. The database upgrade was set as a priority at the recent MFTHBA Board of Directors workshop. The focus of the update will be the development of a new system that is fully integrated, enhances work flow and productivity at the office, improves record keeping and encourages membership participation. The goal of the new system will be to expand the Association’s current capabilities and provide our members more resources. The MFTHBA Board of Directors has set a goal for 2018 to identify a system that meets the above priorities and begin conversion by the end of 2018. While the MFTHBA regrets the loss of the Arizona Fox Trotter Association as an organization and affiliate, the Board of Directors expresses their gratitude to Mr. Ross and the AFTA Board of Directors for the generous support of this effort.
Did you know? January 15th, 2018 marked the 70th anniversary of the official incorporation of the MFTHBA as the official breed registry for the Missouri Fox Trotting Horse.

Thank you MFTHBA and Top Trail. by Tracy Phegley
While reading the February 2017 Journal I noticed that Fox Trot America and Top Trail had joined and were giving away Jackets for the top MFT horses. I had never tracked my miles but thought this sounded like fun so I signed up with my horse White Socks Redman a 6 year old MFT and we ended up coming in fifth place this year. Redman has a unique story behind him. His bloodlines have been in the Phegley family for over 100 years now. His grand dam was Sundown Mary a horse I had as a kid growing up. She was not registered but I had her registered in the MFTBA by having her inspected performing a Fox Trot. Sundown was a great horse and a true example of what a fox trotting horse is she would work cattle like a quarter horse, run barrels, do pleasure classes, and was a great trail horse. Redman was raised by my dad Bill Phegley and was broke as a 2 year old but was not ridden very much as a 2 and 3 year old. I started riding him in the fall as a 4 year old when I purchased him from my dad. Redman and I logged over 360 miles this year checking cows and trail riding. I want to thank my niece Lexy Phegley as she put in a lot of those miles with me riding my MFT horse Shadow and we have plans to keep it up this year. Thank you MFTHBA and Top Trail.
