Presidents Corner Hello , I hope everyone is doing well and getting to do a lot of riding. Horse shows have started and trails are open. I would like to remind everyone of the Spring Show and 3 yr. Old Futurity that will be held at our headquarters in Ava, Mo. starting June 6-9th 2018 our 60th Show and Celebration that will be held on September 2-9 , 2018. I have talked with most of our Committee Chairs and they are planning a lot of special things for the Celebration . With this being our 60th year of us having the Celebration and this year being our 70th year for our registry, everyone is really excited that we have reached such a milestone in the history of our breed. Please be watching our web site and our Facebook page for more information on special events that our committees are working on. We are having our Cattle Sorting event again this year at both the Spring Show and our Celebration. It was a huge success last year and a big hit with our members and it has generated a lot of interest.. We are very excited to be bringing the event back in 2018. Our Trail Committee is trying to get more National Trail Rides scheduled all over the country and they are also trying to get other countries to participate in their own National Trail rides. I will have to say I am very proud of the committees that our Board of Directors have approved this year. They are all trying to work together to make the 2018 shows something special to celebrate our Anniversary this year. If you happen to see or talk to one of our committee chairs or a member of any of our committees, please be sure to tell them Thank You for working so hard to make this year a little extra special. They have already been hard at work on both our Spring show and especially our Fall anniversary show. The grounds committee has several projects they are looking at in attempting to get a our grounds back up in shape so we can have the best place to have shows and other events. We are the only breed that I know of that owns our own grounds. With our aging infrastructure our Board of Directors are having to work overtime to make all of this work. Please keep this in mind when you are thinking about if you would be interested in sponsoring a class at one of ours shows or if you are able to advertise in one of our show programs. If we can free up our budget by self supporting our shows that helps everyone in every way . It doesn’t matter if you are a breeder, if you show performance, show versatility, if you are a trail rider or do other events with your Missouri Foxtrotter, it takes every one of us to make all this work. So please be as generous as you can when our sponsorship committee comes knocking. Your help will be greatly appreciated. We have a price list on our website for the rental of grounds. Please tell all your friends, family or customers that our grounds are available. We have all the amenities anyone could ask for if anyone would like to hold an event. The more we can rent it out the less our members have worry about because that will help generate extra funds. We will be hosting the Healing Wall in September after our Celebration. The wall will be at our grounds on September 20-23, 2018. “The Wall” is what a lot of Americans refer to when talking about the traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The Wall that heals draws over 5.3 million visitors a year. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial built “ The Wall” to give America and other veterans a chance to see it who otherwise may never be able to travel to Washington DC. to see it in person. It bears April 2018 The Journal 3
the names of 58,000 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Along with the wall of names , it also contains educational information and items that have been left at the memorial in Washington. I feel it is a honor to be the site of this event and hope that you can make plans to see it. Once again , Thank You for your support and I will be looking forward to visiting with our members in the up coming show season. Please feel free to contact me about any concerns you might have. My number is 417-838-2019 and my email is: aaronstanifer@aol.com. Aaron Stanifer President

The Doctor Will See You Now VACCINATION SCHEDULES By Dr. Ruth Massey
Vaccination schedules should be tailored to the individual horse or farm. Your veterinarian can help you develop a schedule individualized for your horse(s). There are several vaccines on the market. Vaccines are divided in core vaccines that ALL horses should have, and non core vaccines that horses should receive based on life style. The American Association of Equine Practioners recommends as core vaccines Eastern and Western encephalomyelitis (sleeping sickness), West Nile, tetanus and rabies. All these diseases are not spread from horse to horse but by vectors, the mosquito for sleeping sickness and West Nile, bacteria from soil for tetanus and infected animals for rabies. In regions with heavy mosquito populations, horses may be vaccinated every 6 months for mosquito borne diseases. In most regions, these vaccines are recommended on a yearly basis. I recommend vaccinating brood mares with the core vaccines 30 days before foaling. This gives the foal the highest immediate protection against these diseases through the colostrum. If the mare has been vaccinated, the maternal antibodies will protect the foal for several months. Foals of vaccinated mares should have vaccinations started at 4 to 6 months of age and should receive a series of 3 vaccinations at least 3 weeks apart, other than rabies which is given once. Brood mares should be vaccinated with tetanus toxoid vaccine 30 days before foaling and should NOT be given tetanus antitoxin immediately after foaling as this has been known to cause a fatal liver failure in brood mares. If the mare is vaccinated prior to foaling, this gives the foal better protection against tetanus than giving it tetanus antitoxin at birth. Show horses, horses in stables, or horses that are around groups of horses should also receive flu and rhinopneumonitis vaccinations. The protection from these vaccinations, especially rhino, is short lived. If the horse is heavily shown, it should be vaccinated every 60-90 days against these diseases. These vaccinations need to be given at least 10 days prior to exposure in a previously vaccinated horse, so boostering these vaccinations 10-14 days prior to big shows is best. This is just a brief summary. There are several other vaccinations available. Some other vaccinations are against strangles, Botulism, rattlesnake bites, Potomac horse fever, rotavirus and others. Your local veterinarian is your best source to make a plan for your horses that will cover the core vaccines and other vaccines that are recommended for the area and life style of your horses. Here’s to warm weather and good riding in every discipline. Dr. Ruth Massey

Congratulations
to Cindy Fonken and her horse, Kate’s 007, on winning the MFTHBA 2017 Top Trail Award! Cindy Fonken, together with her husband, Lee Fonken, have been Missouri Foxtrotter enthusiasts for many years. They used to breed and show and now, since retiring, they trail ride. A lot. Cindy Fonken put in 1,741.143 miles in 2017. That works out to 4.77 miles a day on average. If you are wondering, as I was, how miles are tracked down to the 3rd. decimal point, it is done with GPS using an app called EasyTrails GPS (available for Android and Iphone). Any riding in excess of one mile counts. Cindy Fonken says that they ride a few times per week. Although her favorite place to ride is in her home state of Arkansas in the beautiful Ozark Mountains she is always up for an adventure “out”. In 2017 one of their outings took them 21 hours away to the state of Michigan. The Michigan Double Cross is an organized trail ride that is held every 3 years. The trail winds across the entire state of Michigan from the shore of Lake Huron to the shore of Lake Michigan. Cindy says that this was the most challenging ride of the year, 21 days and 250 miles in weather ranging from “freezing to 98 degrees”. The ride commences at Lake Huron, near Oscoda, April 2018 The Journal 6
MI and riders head west to Empire, MI which is on the shore of Lake Michigan then they turn around and go back to the east to where they began in Oscoda, MI. Hence the name Michigan Double Cross. This is a popular trail, with several single crossing trips every year. Cindy says she and her husband rode the trail in 2001 with their two teenagers and it was “quite an experience for the four of us. “ The scenery is beautiful and when Cindy saw Lake Cindy and Seven, Lee and Eagle’s Rockin Granite in Lake Michigan Michigan she said “it was so beautiful and peaceful and blue and everyone was cheering to welcome the riders, it was spectacular to see it”. When asked if she set out to win the Top Trail award Cindy says that she did not, she just rides because she loves it. Winning is just a happy surprise. Her husband, Lee Fonken, rides with her most of the time, except in the Fall during hunting season. Lee Fonken finished 2017 with 1,654.816 miles. Cindy’s next riding goal is to enjoy every bit of it, the different places, beautiful scenery and nature. In fact, the very day April 2018 The Journal 7
we spoke Cindy had been out riding and got to see some baby wood ducks and deer. Cindy says she hopes one of her next big trips will be to Utah to ride Bryce Canyon. Cindy offers this advice for new trail riders, “find a horse you are comfortable and confident on, one that you can handle”. You can tell right away how much Cindy Fonken loves her horse, Kate’s 007 (“Seven” to those who know him). Cindy says “I got him [Seven] as a Christmas present when he was about 3 years old, he will turn 11 next week and he has just come along so nicely. He has turned into such a beautiful horse that sometimes it amazes me that he lives with me.”

Affiliate News Region 4 Fall Festival Exhibitors to Support Make-AWish® Missourii The Region 4 Fall Festival is excited to again support Make-A-Wish® Missouri. Since 1983, MakeA-Wish® Missouri has granted wishes to more than 6,000 children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. This year, the local chapter will grant more than 330 wishes. One dollar from every entry fee will be donated to support the granting of wishes. A special Charity Sponsor option is also available to businesses wishing to help support the Region 4 Fall Festival and Make-A-Wish Missouri. “Being an educator and having worked with kids to raise money for Make-A-Wish Missouri for a number of years, I know the power that granting a wish can have on a child,” shared Amy Stangl, a 7th grade language arts teacher and Region 4 Fall Festival planning team member. According to a U.S. study of wish impact, most health professionals surveyed believe a wish-come-true can influence the health of children. Kids say wishes give them renewed strength to fight their illnesses, and their parents say these experiences help strengthen the entire family. About the Region 4 Fall Festival The Region 4 Fall Festival was launched in 2016 as a cooperative effort between the Kansas City Regional Fox Trotting Horse Association and the St. Louis Regional Fox Trotters. The show offers open-gaited breed versatility and model classes as well as Missouri Fox Trotting Horse performance classes. The show is scheduled for September 29 and will be held at the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia, Missouri. For more information visit their website (Region4FallFestival.com) or connect on Facebook (@Region4FallFestival).
