Presidents Corner Hello Everyone!! As I was sitting on my back porch the other evening watching my mare and new foal I got to thinking about foaling, breeding, trail rides, the start of show season and the first thoughts of World Grand Champions! It’s my favorite time of year when you start to see all those familiar friends and faces after a long winter and off season. Many I may not know personally but get to see at shows, trail rides, the feed store, vet office and just other places around town. To see others who are also excited for the season to enjoy our wonderful breed is so fulfilling. Makes you wonder how so many different kinds of people can have the same fondness. The change in seasons is also prevalent in Ava. The office is lively with calls and inquiries regarding breeding, showing, registering and memberships. Johnny Burkdoll, our maintenance man is busy preparing the show grounds for the upcoming show season. Committees are in full swing preparing for shows and all of their involvement of the season. Everyone is hard at work preparing for this year’s 60th Anniversary of the Show & Celebration, the Diamond Jubilee. A new logo for the 60th Anniversary has been approved and merchandise will be available for purchase. I personally want to thank all the committee members for all of their hard work and willingness to go above and beyond to make this year’s Jubilee extra special. The trail committee is hard at work trying to get more national trail rides all over the world. They are even busy getting one set up in Germany. If you are interested in hosting a national trail ride please contact Jeff Acorn the 2018 trail committee chair or Eddie Moore the board representative for help and information. I want to thank everyone for all the support I have received during the past 18 months. I truly appreciate all the kind words and calls. I am looking forward to seeing all that we can get accomplished during this year. With all of those serving on the board and committees this year hopefully we will only continue to move forward showing how wonderful our breed of horse truly is. I strive to continue to show everyone the true versatility of our wonderful breed and what all our horses can do. By the time this is out the spring trail rides will be pushing into warm summer rides and show season will be in full swing. I hope to see everyone at the 2018 Three Year Old Futurity and Spring Show. The show will kick off on Tuesday, June 5, with the youth seminar being chaired by Billie Jean Thompson and her committee. Then the show will kick off on Wednesday, June 6 at 9am with a Ranch Sorting Clinic and the show will then begin at 6:30pm. Come join in on all the fun with your foxtrotter. There will be youth, performance, versatility, trail rides and clinics to participate in as well as just fun fellowship. Please feel free to come look me up and introduce yourself. I enjoy meeting new members and getting their input. Hope to see you in Ava in June! Good Luck and Best Wishes, Aaron Stanifer

History of Massey Fox Trotters By Ruth Massey

We have all read of how the Missouri Fox Trotting horse originated in the Ozarks and have read, and some of us, memorized the history as recorded by the association. I would like to expand that history by tracing the lineage of one line of horses. These are the mares my grandfather, Arnett Massey of Pease Mill, Missouri, and my father, Lane Massey, raised. The history comes from my grandfather and my aunt, Ethel Massey who lived on the farm in Pease Mill all her life. The first registered Fox Trotter was Diamond M., born 5/17/64. She was registered on inspection and has a foundation registration number of F-3850. Her dam was Queen, my first horse. Grandpa gave her to me when I was nine on the condition he got her first foal which was Diamond. Queen’s great grand dam was a mare named Nell that Grandpa purchased from Oscar Davis, a neighbor. She was bred to a 5 gaited stallion called Andy owned by Johnny Poole of Lebanon, Missouri and the resulting foal was a sorrel filly named Lady. During WW II Lady was bred to a 5 gaited stallion named Danemore (spelling may not be correct) also owned Johnny Poole. Danemore was reputably a pure bred Denmark horse. Johnny rode the stallion the 17 miles from Lebanon to Grandpa’s farm and bred the mare. He spent the night and bred the mare again the next morning. The resulting foal was a filly. She belonged to my father, Lane Massey who was in the service at the time. When he heard Lady had a sorrel filly, he named her Redwings after his favorite song. Redwings was the horse I learned June 2018 The Journal 5

to ride on. Grandpa and Daddy called their horses walking horses or saddle horses. They rode them at a running walk or a single foot. They used them to work cattle. Grandpa taught me to ride by putting me on Redwings, tying the reins together so if I dropped them, she would not trip on them, and turning Redwings’ head to the river bottom 60 acres where the cattle were. As soon as Grandpa turned Redwings loose, she headed to the river bottom. I would drop the reins and hang on as Redwings rounded up and brought in the 20-30 head of cattle on her own. Redwings was bred to a palomino stallion call King owned by Coy Lindsey of Morgan, Mo in 1958. He was a 5 gaited horse out of a registered Saddlebred stallion named Mack Golden Glow and a mare called Betty who was out of Ted and a mare called Lady. I don’t know if this is the Fox Trotter stallion Ted. Mack Golden Glow was foaled in 1942 and was registered as a champagne palomino, number 03455255. He was by Palomino Mack, also a champagne palomino Saddlebred # 0182775 foaled in 1938, and out of Kloochman, a great granddaughter of Rex McDonald. She was foaled in 1925 and was sorrel. Her Saddlebred registration number was 016277. Palomino Mack was a great grandson of Rex McDonald. Queen, the palomino filly out of Redwings by King was foaled July 17, 1959. She was Redwings’ last foal. Her preferred gait was the running walk, but if she was tired enough, she would switch into a perfect fox trot. She would also single foot and rack naturally. In 1963 Queen was bred to Little June 2018 The Journal 6

Red #1409, bred by Dale Esther and owned by W.D. Walker. Little Red was a son of Golden Governor # F-107 and a mare called Shirley who was not registered as a fox trotter. Shirley was by Merry Boy, a registered Tennessee Walking horse and a mare called Lady Fox who was by Mike (Beard horse) and Elmer Climer mare. At the time Little Red may have been owned by Waldo (Dode) Davis, a neighbor of Grandpa. Queen had a sorrel filly named Diamond. The filly was my payment to Grandpa for Queen. Grandpa sold Diamond to Lowell and Tim McBride who owned a neighboring farm. Tim had Diamond registered as a fox trotter by inspection so Diamond has a foundation number. Diamond had 14 foals, several by Poole’s Blue Boy and several by Watergate. One foal by Blue Boy was Bolivar Blue # 3917, a gelding showed by Elmer Hicks and by Chris Patterson. Chris won the Youth World Championship on Bolivar Blue. Other colts were Blue Mack # 8710 by Blue Boy who sired 60 registered foals and Mack K’s Diamond who sired 25 registered foals. Fillies out of Diamond were Diamond’s Suzy Q # 80-18274, (shown very successfully by Pat Aubachon) who had 9 foals, Lady Bell who had 1 foal, Watergait’s Diamond Bell # 886-29115 who had 6 foals and Watergate’s Katydid # 8119116 who had 8 foals. (The spelling of Watergait and Watergate are taken from the registration papers.) I bred Queen to Poole’s Blue Boy, then traded her in foal to Tim for her grandson, Sailor Boy, the first fox trotter I showed. The resulting filly was a blue roan named Blue Boy’s Dutchess # F-8709 that Kathy Wilkerson McBride showed to reserve championship 4 Year Old while the show was still at the Douglas County Fair Grounds. At that time, there were no amateur classes. Blue Boy’s Dutchess had 13 foals. She is registered as out of Diamond, but Queen is her dam. One of her foals was Yankee’s Brush Creek Blaze (dam of 7 foals). One of her foals was Major Sunrise who sired 31 foals. This one line of horses illustrates how the fox trotter developed. There was a strong Saddlebred influence in the early lines with walking horses showing up later. The horses resulting from this line started as work horses driving cattle but the offspring have been show horses, pleasure horses and still horses used for work-just like all fox trotters. Landing in the Winners Circle By Jen Gaffke

Congratulations to Keeli Land and her horse That’s Jest Jessie on their 2017 World Grand Championship win in the Youth 15-17 class. Keeli Land is a remarkably talented and busy young lady. She has won the Youth World Grand Championship 4 times and will compete again this year. Keeli started showing (and winning) when she was just 8 years old and won her first Youth World Grand Championship on a horse named “Playboy’s Heart of Gold” in 2009.. Keeli in 2017 on That’s Jest Jessie

A mare by the name of “Magnolia’s Dixie Chick”, helped Keeli learn to ride and show. Keeli offers this advice for kids just starting out “get a good horse that has been shown before, pay attention to safety. Be confident

Keeli age 6 & Magnolia’s Dixie Chick

and always keep trying”. Keeli credits her trainer in Rogersville, Mr. Garrett King with always having a good horse ready for her. Keeli says her biggest challenge when it comes to showing her foxtrotters is finding the time to ride.

June 2018 The Journal 8

It is a 2 hour trip to her trainers place and Keeli finds the time in between school studies and being on the road for softball. She has made some good friends while riding and showing foxtrotters and loves the versatility and disposition of the breed. Keeli enjoys the show atmosphere very Keeli & “King’s Special Sensation” much and plans to show “That’s Jest Jessie” again this year. She reports that this will be her last year in the 15-17 Youth class. Keeli describes the first time she won Youth World Grand Champion (at the age of 8) as “really exciting” and it never gets old. Winning in 2017 was just as exciting, she really enjoys the challenge of taking a new horse in and just doing their best. Keeli also participates in Ranch Sorting events with her horse and after the showing season is complete she and her family enjoy trail riding. Special “Thanks” to Keeli’s mom, Tara Land for providing most of the pictures in this article. MFTHBA provided the 2017 pictures.

mber to attend e Annual m Re Youth Seminar: Held in conjunction with the Spring Show and Three Year Old Futurity, the Youth Seminar is a great opportunity for youth members to expand the equine knowledge. The one-day event is open to youth ages 6 to 17 years of age. June 2018 The Journal 9
