Ben Ainslie Racing are putting the final touches to their Old Portsmouth base and preparing for the America’s Cup World Series races off Southsea, from 23 to 26 July.

The event will be the first time that the contenders for the cup have been pitted against each other. BAR will take their first competitive steps towards their goal of bringing the cup home in 2017.

Ben gets race ready

Sir Ben said: “Portsmouth has a great maritime heritage and we felt it was a natural home for the team’s permanent base in the UK. We hope through our journey to bring the cup home to Britain we will inspire more young people to get involved in the sport, along with supporting the growth of the marine sector in the Solent area.” BAR say the new team HQ on The Camber will initially employ about 90 people, with many more potential jobs created among suppliers. It will be the focal point for the design, construction and development of the team’s boats and will also provide sports science and fitness facilities. The team plan an apprenticeship and training scheme, and the building will also contain a visitor centre for school and community groups, allowing them to experience the construction and operation of the team’s America’s Cup boats first-hand. The project is expected to boost the city’s economy. A recent report on Team New Zealand suggested that its America’s Cup base in Auckland created 1,000 jobs and brought an £60m boost to the local economy. A summer of great Our free season of live music at the Bandstand kicks off on 31 May and continues every Sunday through the summer (with a brief break on 19 July and 26 July because of the Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cup World Series).

There are some great events coming your way to kick off the summer. We pick just a few highlights here, with our usual listings on pages 6 to 9.

The Portsmouth Summer Show is a new family event coming to the King George V Playing Fields in Cosham on Saturday 27 June. As well as top live music acts like Blue, Professor Green, Alesha Dixon and Matt Cardle, organisers plan a fairground, craft beer, street food, a petting zoo, market stalls, medieval re-enactment and a whole lot more.

Faeries and a dance spectacular called The Seafarers, which brings together professional and community dancers to tell the story of shipbuilding in Portsmouth. Young-adult fiction author Andy Mulligan, National Poet of Wales Gillian Clarke and acappella band the Swingle Singers are also in the line-up. Why I’m Foster carer Emma with husband Chris and their dog Summer

Emma, 28, from Southsea, is one of our foster carers. Here she tells us how she sees her role. What made you want to foster? I didn’t want to go straight into a high-powered job after university, and did some volunteer mentoring with a 15-year-old girl whose mum had kicked her out. Just being part of our life was a positive influence for her, so I wanted to do more.

What are the rewards? The everyday experiences – bringing children into a safe place and giving them the care and positive routine they need. I give them experiences and good family relationships they may not have experienced before. It’s a job I’m proud of, that my friends and family respect.

Fostering is my job. I’m here to be a positive role model and influence. The financial rewards are very generous, up to nearly £500 a week for each young person, which means I can do it full-time.

During national Foster Care Fortnight (1–14 June) we invite everyone to “make a connection” to fostering, and raise awareness of Portsmouth young people who need a safe, stable environment while difficulties at home are addressed. Train stations improve We’ve been making improvements to Portsmouth and Southsea, Fratton and Cosham train stations – with more facilities for cyclists and better security. The station improvements, made with South West Trains, include:

Virtually all Portsmouth buses have free Wi-Fi, and we’ve fitted more than 80 shelters with electronic displays that give timetable details and other information. More and more buses are being fitted with trackers so they can communicate with these shelters and let you know how many minutes you’ll wait.

They’re convenient Most of us live within a five or 10-minute walk of a bus stop. Buses make frequent trips in and out of the city, making them ideal for shopping or going to the football, without the hassle and cost of parking. Plus, with smart tickets like Solent Go, you don’t need change, and you can hop on and off as you like. You can even combine ferry travel with a bus trip.

Get home composting Avoiding food waste is a great habit to get into, as it saves you lots of money and time, and is good for the environment. Some waste from your kitchen is unavoidable, like fruit and veg peelings for example. But if you make sure these go into a compost bin and not your rubbish, your reward will be great free compost for your garden! Put these in your home composter: ff veg peelings ff fruit scraps and peelings ff salad scraps

Pack it in! We often get asked why there’s so much packaging on some everyday items, especially when some of it can’t be recycled. It’s true that reducing packaging would use fewer natural resources, but there’s also a lot we can’t do without.

The facts about “legal highs” “Legal highs” have been in the news a lot, but it can be hard to understand what they are. Here are the facts. So-called “legal highs” are designed to act like illegal drugs. They’re more accurately called new psychoactive substances or NPS. Many are sold under brand names like Clockwork Orange, Bliss, Spice or Mary Jane. They’re often so new that there’s been little or no research into their health effects. So if you take them, you’re the guinea pig. There have been hospital admissions and even deaths linked to the use of NPS.

ff They are usually bought and sold either over the internet or in “head shops”. ff Because they’re called “legal highs”, a lot of people believe they’re safe, when in fact they’re not. Legal does not mean safe. ff Risks can include reduced inhibitions, drowsiness, excited or paranoid states, coma, seizures, and death.

So what do you need to know?

ff The risks are greater if used with alcohol or other drugs.

ff They are often marked as “not for human consumption”.

The best advice is to stay safe and avoid NPS.

ff They are often sold as “plant food”, “incense”, “bath salts”, “pond cleaner” or “research chemicals”.

Stay off zigzags Too many drivers – including parents – are parking on zigzags near schools. This puts children in danger. Road safety officer Ollie Willocks said: “The most common factor in road accidents involving children is a child trying to cross the road from between parked cars, where visibility is poor. “Anyone who parks on zigzags during school hours risks a hefty fine in court. Parking on zigzags also risks a £70 parking ticket. Fines apply even if you’re just dropping off or picking up children.”

Friends around the globe As part of our series about Portsmouth’s links with cities around the world, we look at our bond with Haifa in Israel. A major Mediterranean seaport, Haifa is the largest city in northern Israel, and the third largest in the country.

Haifa was the second overseas city to link with Portsmouth – there has been a sister link between the two communities since 1963. The link was set up at the invitation of Haifa, where it was realised that many Israeli navy personnel were on courses in and around the city. The Haifa-Portsmouth friendship link committee works closely in association with the friendship committee, individuals and organisations in Haifa. The link also aims to encourage organisations in Portsmouth to link up with those that have similar interests in Haifa, and to help entertain and arrange hospitality for groups coming to Portsmouth, as well as organise visits to Haifa.
