Happy March!
M
arch is one of our favorite months of the year. Of course, March is the month we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. It also marks the beginning of Spring Training in Baseball. Also, Mia and I will be celebrating our 24th wedding anniversary. Back in 1994, Mia and I were married at Old St. Patrick’s Church in Chicago’s West Loop. Our wedding reception held at Sheraton Gateway was one for the ages. With over 250 relatives and friends, it was an event people still talk about today. One of the highlights from the reception was Mia’s parents surprising us with the Shannon Rovers. After working on our Master’s degrees in Winona, Minnesota, we landed in Huntley in 1999. We arrived just in time to celebrate Huntley’s Sesquicentennial. Although we are still considered “new Huntley”, we feel that Huntley has taken us in and made us an important part of this community. We are always looking to give back - and we believe helping local companies share their stories and their products and services with each other is a way we can do that. Local businesses, along with schools and people are what a community is all about. Thank you for taking this journey with us and please don’t hesitate to contact us if there is something you would like to see in future editions of Huntley Happenings.

Enjoy an evening of entertainment while supporting a great cause! Attend the District 158 Education Foundation’s “Dueling Pianos” event at Pinecrest Golf Course in Huntley! As the title of Arlen’s show implies, Ag News and Views is a forum for Arlen to provide his listeners with current news and his well-qualified views about a variety of agricultural, food, and energy related topics.
• Kathleen Carr hosts How Does Your Garden Grow? Carr is
the owner of The Growing Scene Garden Center and Landscape company. This business has been a lifelong dream of Kathleen’s. Kathleen began her business at the young age of 11 by growing and selling vegetables at the same family location. She then pursued her educational goals, earning an Agricultural Sciences degree from Texas A&M University. She taught horticulture and worked for three of the most well-respected nurseries in the Midwest. Finally, in 1996, with the help of her husband, Chris, Kathi’s dream became a reality with The Growing Scene, Inc. With the continued support of chris and their three children, the business has grown to include a Garden Center, Landscaping company and Farm Stand.
• Joe “Pal Joe” Alengo hosts Big Swingtime. The show opens
and closes with Glenn Miller’s signature song “In the Mood” and follows with swing music by such greats as Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Peggy Lee, and more. If you love music of that Big Band era and style, you are sure to love this show.
• Jim Carney hosts Jimmy’s Jukebox. Jim’s goal is to serve our community through Huntley Radio and attract listeners to the
sounds of the 60’s and 70’s. Jim writes, “By sharing my music with the Village of Huntley and the surrounding communities, I am seeking not only to entertain our audience but encourage involvement. I envision listeners writing in and requesting me to hit button B2 on Jimmy’s Jukebox so they can enjoy their favorite song or one that brings back great memories. My music is an expression of my commitment that I wish to share with everyone.”
• The Elgin Symphony Orchestra Listeners Club is hosted by
lecturer and music historian Jim Kendros, and ESO violinist/ Education Manager Wendy Evans. Jim has facilitated ESO’s “Musically Speaking” pre-concert conversations since February, 2008. A professional composer with over 200 works to his credit, his Wheaton Sinfonia was premiered by members of the Houston Symphony. Jim is also the pre-concert lecturer for the Lake Forest Symphony and the Northbrook Symphony and is a frequent guest lecturer for Music of the Baroque.
As personnel manager of the ESO, Wendy manages the musicians, hire substitutes, run auditions, and submits payroll. As the Education and Community Outreach Manager of the ESO, Wendy has increased the attendance of ESO’s youth concert series, started the “Listeners Club” for adults to study concert repertoire in depth before each of the Classics Series concerts, and manages the Musicians Care program at Sherman Hospital.

We specialize in deli meats - specifically Boar’s Head, sandwiches, custom sandwiches drinks, and entertainment. You have 4 locations? Yes - Huntley, Woodstock, Spring Grove, & Mundelein which is having its grand opening soon. What do most people come in for? the food, drinks, gambling or entertainment? Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline
“Orphan Train” is a fascinating story of friendship between women from two generations. According to a New York Times review, the book is “A revelation of the universal yearning for belonging, for family, for acceptance and, ultimately, the journeys we must all make to find them.” The book looks at the lives of two women. Molly is a troubled young foster child, living in present day New England. She lives with a family that does not want her to be in their lives. The second woman, Vivian, has also lived a troubled life. As a child, a fire killed her family and left her an orphan, alone in New York City. Then in 1929, she was sent west on the Orphan Train. This was a real train, used in the United States for 75 years up to the Great Depression to find young immigrant orphans new homes. Their lives were often very difficult and Vivian had many secrets to share.
Later, in 2001, 17-year-old Molly is performing community-service work for 91 year old Vivian. Her difficult past unfolds as they go through her cluttered attic. As they talk, they realize that they have much in common. Molly is skeptical at first but soon realizes she has the power to help Vivian find answers to mysteries that have haunted her. At the same time, Vivian’s answers provide a kind of release for Molly. They both hid their pasts, encountered difficulties and learned to be resourceful. Through this process, Molly starts to see all the shattered pieces of her life for what they are – puzzle pieces on her journey to becoming a woman. I hope you enjoy reading “Orphan Train”. Perhaps it will motivate you to reach out to a younger woman you know who may enjoy sharing in your wisdom and life experiences.

Sports! Rebuild or Retool?

f you are a Blackhawks fan, this season has not been fun for you. The team is on pace to miss the playoffs for the first time since the 2007-2008 season, and fans are conflicted on the direction of the team. Should the Blackhawks rebuild? Should they trade away players like Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook or Johnathan Toews? Or should they just hope for better luck next season?
While Stan Bowman hasn’t been very clear with the answers to these questions, he made one interesting comment that has been in my head since the trade to acquire Anthony Duclair. In the press conference immediately following the trade which sent Richard Panik to Arizona in exchange for Duclair, Bowman stated that the team at that time last year had only a few players below the age of 25. This time around the team has 13 players around the age of 25. So did the Hawks just pull off a small rebuild? Or are they retooling? The answer is a little bit of both.
