Publ!sher’s Notes

A

fter an extensive suburb search in 1998, the Geheren’s settled in Huntley in 1999 - just in time for the Sesquicentennial celebration in 2001. Yes, we have a brick in the square. This was the same time that Sun City began exploding and between the growth in Sun City and in all of the subdivisions in Huntley, the Friendly Village with Country Charm started to become what we live in today. A great deal has changed in 20 years and a great deal has remained the same. The Huntley Dairy Mart, Tom’s Farm, the Gazebo, Parkside Pub, Papa G’s and many more places are still here (many with updates). New to the Friendly Village is Centegra Hospital (what are the odds a Village our size would land a hospital?), WalMart, Huntley Community Radio (shameless plug), a new and improved Deicke Park, the 90/47 corridor and many new businesses. The amazing improvements to Huntley have been mainly due to the collaboration of The Village of Huntley, The Huntley Chamber of Commerce, The Huntley Park District, Huntley Community School District 158 and the award winning Huntley Police Department and Huntley Fire Department. The residents of Huntley have helped make this a destination district in the State of Illinois. What do the next 20 years look like in Huntley? How about the next 150 years…. only time will tell, but it promises to be an interesting ride.

Commun!ty Huntley High School Launching Competency-Based Learning Pilot Program

I

n the 2018-19 school year, 110 Huntley High School students will pioneer competencybased learning at the school. Huntley 158 was one of just 10 school districts in Illinois selected to participate in the state’s first-ever competency-based education pilot program.

Through the HHS Vanguard Vision (V2) pilot program, those students will learn in a structure and environment completely different from the traditional high school setting, but more like many professional workplaces. While specific programs can follow a variety of structures, at its core, competency-based education replaces the traditional timebased model for student progression with progression based on mastery of skills. That is, instead of structuring a course to progress from topic to topic on, say, a weekly schedule, students in a competency-based course progress after demonstrating their mastery of a topic. Transitioning away from seat time in favor of a structure that creates flexibility allows students to progress as they demonstrate mastery of academic content, regardless of time, place, or pace of learning.

What is a competency? Competencies are broad, overarching concepts supported by

clusters of standards that can be transferred across disciplines. The standards that students must achieve in class are drawn from the same guidelines provided by the State of Illinois for all public schools, dictating expectations for what students should learn in English language arts, math, science, and other areas. That is, the students will be covering the same course content as their counterparts in traditional classes, but approaching in in a more flexible and personalized manner.

Why the change? Huntley 158 has adopted a district-wide focus on personalized learning, aiming to work with each student’s strengths, weaknesses, interests, and learning styles to provide each with the best opportunity to learn and thrive. The District recognizes that students learn differently, and the traditional model of teaching and learning didn’t always allow for personalization. In addition, the District believes learning is better measured by proficiency rather than by the amount time spent in a classroom.

The Vanguard Vision Program The first class of V2 students will include 110 freshmen, who were selected via a lottery after demonstrating interest in and applying to the program. Four core teachers and one instructional coach will lead instruction in four core courses with a focus on individualized education and in a flexible block schedule. For the rest of their electives, students will choose from existing traditional or blended courses.

P

arkside Pub is located in downtown Huntley, and they have an extensive menu, which is available whether you’re dining in or carrying out. Parkside offers delicious bar food, and they’re home to the annual Turkey Testicle Festival. The event is world famous and it showcases many bands from the area on top of the delicacy itself. Bars are usually synonymous with smaller menus and greasy food. But at Parkside Pub, food is one of the venues’ major strengths. You’ll always be able to get your monster burger, but the bar also offers fish, soups, melts, and tacos. And with generous portions, you’re sure to leave full…and might even have leftovers!

The Turkey Testicle Festival has been going on since Print sudoku 1983, and it’s showing no signs of stopping. Book Review by Annie Camille

Prime of Life by P.D. Beckendam

This novel was a huge surprise for me. Okay. Call me judgmental but my expectations weren’t high. It’s written by a doctor. (I work in medicine, and though my docs are brilliant and wonderful and all that, the focus and dedication to medicine doesn’t leave a lot of time for the focus and dedication required to write well, just saying.) My interest was piqued, however, since purchasing this book makes a donation to a terrific cause. Because I constantly am reading more than one book at a time, I usually have a book in my purse for wait times during my activities of daily living, and I usually chose a book I don’t think I’m going to

adore. That’s where Prime of Life went. Purse book. I loved the cover and the plot line sounded interesting. A doctor who has escaped his life and now is a janitor at a retirement community. But still, it was destined for the purse. However, once I began reading the novel it became a must-finish-thisbook-as-soon-as-possible read. The writing clips along. The characters are quirky with a capital Q. Prime of Life is a charming read. Moments of deep or melancholy pepper the book along with loads of humor and

sarcasm. I adore quirky characters and sarcasm even more. This one was right up my alley. The one caution I have is that there is a little bit of curmudgeonly humor/language that might offend more sensitive readers.

Sports! Does Chicago want Machado?

T Curtis Koch

he Cubs have been one of the most polarizing teams in baseball the last few years. Any possible big name player you can think of has been in some way linked to the Cubs. Whether it be trade rumors or free agency, the Cubs are a team players want to play for. In mid May, when the Orioles came to Chicago for a series against the White Sox, Manny Machado’s name was being linked to the Cubs as a potential trade candidate for this year. The rumors had one of the returning players Addison Russell. Does this make sense? Should the Cubs even go for Machado? What about possibly signing Bryce Harper? Let’s dig in.

Does trading away three controllable years of Addison Russell, only to receive four guaranteed months of Machado make sense? No. The ceiling on Russell during the next three years is too high for only four months of Machado. “What if the Cubs are able to resign him?” Then that’s great! But what if they aren’t able to? That means that Javier Baez becomes your shortstop, and Zobrist/Happ play 2nd base. While Baez at shortstop isn’t a bad idea, the advanced defensive metrics favor Russell more as a shortstop over Baez.

Heyward contract has not panned out as the Cubs have hoped, although after this season he can be traded on a partial no trade clause. Do we see Jason Heyward shipped out of Chicago? Possibly. The Cubs would have to eat a lot of money to move him. The teams owes 303 Million dollars to Darvish, Hayward and Lester. Investing close to another 300 million to Machado or Harper, as well as trying to keep players such as Contreras, Schwarber, Bryant, and Rizzo will be difficult. The Cubs are going to be a team that could have the highest payroll in baseball.

If the Cubs do sign Machado in free agency, and not trade for him, what does that mean for Addison Russell. With the recent surge of production out of Javier Baez, (not to mention his flashy defense) the Cubs in my opinion would trade Russell over the offseason and acquire some prospects in return. Although depending on how much the Cubs spend on Machado, leaves them with several big contracts still on the books, most notably Jason Heyward, and Yu Darvish. The team would also like to extend Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo at some point soon as well.

Finally, where does this leave Bryce Harper? A player who many Cubs fans at the beginning of the year wanted over Machado. Harper is a few months younger than Machado and would provide an offensive bump in the outfield that Jason Heyward hasn’t provided. In my opinion, if the Cubs are able to move Heyward and his contract. They should bring in Bryce Harper. The Cubs infield is great already and adding an elite outfielder to arguably the weakest position on the field for the Cubs would make them a better team. Not to say adding Machado wouldn’t make them better, but adding a player at a weak spot in the lineup makes sense over simply upgrading over a position the Cubs have so much depth at already.

Spending the big money isn’t an issue for Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer. The question is, how difficult will it be to move some finances around. The Jason
