Publ!sher’s Notes I’ve always known Huntley was a close-knit community. It’s where I grew up. I attended school in District 158 from Kindergarten until graduation. I’ve worked at Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center, Sun City Huntley and Huntley Community Radio. It wasn’t until mid April of this year, that I was able to fully grasp what this community means to me and my family. My dear brother Charlie died on his 13th birthday. This boy has had a series of medical issues from birth. My parents, the owners of Huntley Happenings, brought him into our home at five months old and gave him the best life imaginable. Charlie was a guiding force. He was a miracle to be born. He showed people what happiness looks like. He showed how to fight. He showed resilience. He never judged. He was pure human as anyone you could meet. It’s so interesting how a little boy who can’t talk, has 95% brain damage and can’t communicate very much, can be so influential to peoples lives. We will forever be changed because a little boy named Charles Geheren was in our lives. The week of his passing brought a community together to help alleviate the burden of paying for his celebration of life. I couldn’t be more grateful that my parents were able to focus on my brother and solely my brother. There are so many people and organizations to thank (and I will do my best to list them below). I just want everyone in the friendly village with country charm to know that when life is at its worse . the community of Huntley pulls together to make it a little easier. Please continue to lift my family up in your thoughts & prayers. We love Huntley. We will continue to honor Charlie’s legacy in Huntley. Commun!ty For the past few years, a group of 40+ volunteers has been providing local news, entertainment and music for Huntley and the surrounding areas. Once a dream of three Sun City residents, no is the local go to media source for the entire area. One of the three founders, Jim Carollo, passed away last month. A dear friend and colleague and a true Hall of Famer, Jim Carollo passed away after suffering a long illness. In addition to being a founding member of Huntley Community Radio, Jim was a long-time employee of WGN Radio. This photo is from his induction into the WGN Hall of Fame. Jim is responsible for all of the technical aspects of launching HCR. He also helped to launch many radio careers in radio. Jim brought his talents and success of producing The Chicago Bears to HCR to help Huntley become one of the few to have high school football games on the radio.

Advert!ser Spotl!ght DeFiore-Jorgensen Funeral & Cremation Service There is nothing that prepares someone to plan their first funeral. On April 13th, we had to do just that as our son Charlie had passed on from this life. When I tell you we had no idea what we were supposed to do, that is an understatement. Fortunately, when we were at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, they set us up with hospice from Journeycare. Two hours after Charlie passed, Carol DeFiore and Bill Jorgensen showed up at our door at 6:00 am. They were amazing. As we were all numb and incapable of making a decision, Carol and Bill were as compassionate as they were professional. They took Charlie to the funeral home and told us to come by when we were ready. Bill took the lead at the funeral home and if it wasn’t for Bill and our son Michael, we would probably still be there trying to make a decision. About the only thing we had decided was to have a service that celebrated Charlie’s life. He would not have liked something that was very sad with a lot of crying. Bill walked us on a path to having a beautiful celebration of life service at the funeral home.Print sudoku The service was perfect. We had no idea how many people would be there, but it was 3obvious by the 1 5 6 9 8 4 2 5 4 8 6 9 1 7 2turnout 4 9 5 7that 3 1 8 7 2 so 9 5many 4 3 Charlie6touched 3 7 8 2 1 6 7 9 4 3 1 5 8 2 6 more people than we would have 5 2 3 1 4 7 8 3 7 6 4 2 1 9 5 8ever 1 4 imagined. 3 6 9 9 6 2 1 5 7 4 3 8

The next day, DeFiore-Jorgensen led us in a ceremony at Huntley Cemetery that was again as good as something like that can be. The words that struck me as we were working with Bill and Carol were: compassionate, patient, comforting, loving, humane, sympathetic, warm, understanding, heart-felt, responsive, considerate, generous, and kind. I think that about covers what you want and need when you are laying to rest your loved ones. Bill and Carol have continued to follow-up with us after the services. The Geheren family would like to thank DeFioreJorgensen Funeral & Cremation Service. They helped make one of the worst experiences parents can have - losing a child into a beautiful celebration of life that has helped hundreds of people realize that Charlie is in a better place - dancing with the angels.

Book Review by Annie Camille

The Force of Character by James Hillman

This imaginative, compelling, and always thought-provoking volume turns all of our conventional ideas about aging upside down revealing their emptiness, folly, and disrespectfulness. James Hillman, founder of archetypal psychology and the best-selling author of The Soul’s Code, successfully fulfills his daring mission — to “decouple death from aging, and instead restore the ancient link between older age and the uniqueness of character.” Here is an antidote to the plethora of wrong-headed health books about how to achieve longevity and be forever young. In three bold sections — lasting, leaving, and left — Hillman shows how our characters are enriched, deepened, and made meaningful by long life. Character, according to the author, “has been forming your face, your habits, your friendships, your peculiarities, the level of your ambition with its career and its faults. Character influences the way you give and receive; it affects your loves and your children. It walks you home at night and can keep you long awake.” Hillman celebrates the long lasting life as a chance to review the years, to make amends, to transform memories into stories, to revel in the input of the senses, to connect with the ancestors, to mentor the young, to speak out against injustice, and to heal the planet. Here the term “old” both brings out

character and gives character. No wonder ancient civilizations bestowed honor and respect on elders, crones, matriarchs, and patriarchs. In one of the most stunning sections of the book, Hillman presents a soulful reframing of qualities and habits of the long-lived that have been traditionally seen as dreadful and debilitating, such as repetition, waking at night, muddled agitation, drying up, shortterm memory loss, heightened irritability, erotics, and heart failure. “Some of what I mean by ‘force of character’ is the persistence of the incorrigible anomalies, those traits you can’t fix, can’t hide, and can’t accept.” The unfolding of character finds a place for all the unmentionables of old age. Read this revolutionary book and spread the word about it. Let Hillman change your ideas about long life, which he sees as a laboratory for the refining of character. Best of all, open your heart to aging as an adventure into many new lands that are waiting to be discovered and explored.

Sports! Does Devin Hester deserve a spot in Canton?

O

n Monday, April 23rd, Devin Hester and Matt Forte returned to Halas Hall to retire with the team their careers started, the Chicago Bears. Both players brought countless memories to the lakefront over the course of their careers.

There is an interesting debate for Hester, a Curtis special teams player, Koch to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall Of Fame. While many people outside of the Chicago area believe that he is not worthy, I think he is worthy of being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Here are some of Devin’s career stats: • • • • • •

Most Return TD’s in NFL History 4 time Pro Bowler 13 Punt Return TD’s (Bears Record) 5 Kickoff Return TD’s (Including the Super Bowl) 5,504 Kickoff Return Yards (Bears Record) 255 Rec. 3,311 Yards 16 TD’s as a Wide Receiver

Hester easily doesn’t make the Hall as a wide receiver. He mainly made his four pro bowls due to his playmaking abilities on special teams. However, the way he played on special teams and the way he changed teams approaches to kickoffs is why he deserves to be in Canton.

The stats above prove it, Hester set numerous records for both Bears history and NFL history. However when you have a big enough impact for teams to kick away from you and make plans around you in special teams, you’re a pretty special player. Even more so, the fact that there hasn’t been any player in the NFL to make a big enough impact on special teams, to the point for the NFL to consider eliminating kickoffs all together. That’s pretty amazing.
