I have always had a love-hate relationship with December. Love the holidays, the warm spirit, the presents, and the chilly weather. Hate the hustle of it all, the fact that the holidays are a lot of work but gone in a flash, and hate taking down the decorations when it’s all over. It is also the time of year that we should count our blessings for our family, our friends, and hopefully our health. And when the end of the year is looming, I like to reflect on what the past year has brought us, whether good or bad, and look to the New Year as a chance to start all over again and improve both personally and professionally. My hope as a business owner is always that our shop brings something that can help improve you as a person. Whether that comes in ways to help you be more creative, in possibly improving your piecing or quilting skills, or maybe improving the social aspects of your life. Whatever it is that our shop brings to you, we hope it is a positive one. And always know that we love to hear what these things are, even if it is not something good; letting us know always helps us improve and grow. As you look through the pages here of our 27th issue, we hope you find something that will bring a new challenge or a fun new experience to your life in 2016, and together we will make it an amazing year. Sew Scrappy Social STRING QUILT ALL DAY SEW Thursday, February 4th…10am – 5pm Or Saturday, April 2nd…10am – 5pm Class Fee $30
The lovely String Quilt is our newest Sew Scrappy Social quilt. A string quilt is a true stash buster and is made with the very last bits and pieces or ‘strings’ of a fabric that are normally sewn down onto a foundation of either muslin or paper. If the string is not long enough for the block, then it is pieced together to make it long enough. Did you know that during the economic slump of the early twentieth century, string style quilt-making thrived? Whatever fabrics were available, they were used as-is. The strings were narrow strips of scrap fabrics or otherwise used pieces of fabric that would be thrown out. An example of a modern-day string quilt is a selvedge edge quilt or project, which make beautiful use of the part of fabric that would normally be tossed away. After you make your first string quilt, you will look at your fabric scraps in a whole new way. Now don’t forget the promise we made last time… The new name is Sew Scrappy Social and we hereby solemnly swear to (1) keep finding cute scrappy quilts for you to sew (2) feed you something to keep your energy up and, (3) continue to provide a light and relaxing classroom setting for learning and laughter. In return, you promise to (1) keep having scraps to sew the quilts with, (2) eat all the food so we don’t have to clean up leftovers and, (3) sign up and show up ready for fun.

Springtime means Quilt Show! The Desert Quilters of Nevada will hold their Quilt Las Vegas 2016 show entitled “Reflections” at the Henderson Convention Center on Friday, March 18th through Sunday the 20th, 2016. This judged show will feature traditional, modern and art quilts as well as other handmade items. This year, a certified AQS quilt appraiser, Sandra Starley, will be at the show. This is a fantastic chance to have your antique quilts, art quilts or even your new quilts appraised for their value. Visitors can also enjoy and shop at the Merchants Mall and the DQN Boutique. You may also purchase tickets to win one of the circle baskets or the beautiful Opportunity Quilt, “Radiant Reflections” (shown here). Admission for the show is $8 on Friday and Saturday and $5 on Sunday. Please watch for more details in your inbox for great specials here at Quiltique during the show. ABOUT LAURA HEINE…
Laura is a self-taught, talented and experienced quilter with over 25 years in the industry. She currently owns a quilt shop in Billings, Montana called Fiberworks, and she also travels the country teaching and encouraging students to express their own creativity in quilting. Laura has won many awards including the BERNINA Award presented by AQS for the best machine quilting workmanship in 1993 in Paducah, Kentucky. In addition to her gorgeous quilt collage patterns, Laura has designed over ten fabric collections for Kings Road Imports along with other quilting manufactures, and is currently designing for RJR Fabrics. We have been busy preparing to bring you not one, not two, but four different block of the month programs beginning this quarter. We are sure there is one that suits your fancy! Please visit our website or stop by for more information and to get signed up. Space is limited!
Modern Mille Size 78” x 78”
We have caught the Millefiore mania! Create and design your own stunning Millefiore English paper pieced quilt here with us. It is the quilt that stitchers' dreams are made of. During this 14-month Block of the Month program, you will receive Katja Marek’s book The New Hexagon…52 Blocks to English Paper Piece, and all the paper pieces needed to make the Millefiore quilt top. Fabric is not included. There is a $20 non-refundable registration fee, then $30 per month for 14 months. Monthly classes with Chantal Clay are included and are scheduled for the 3rd Monday of each month from 6pm – 9pm beginning January 18th. No sewing machine required.
Graceful Gardens Size 76” x 93”
From Kaye England, Graceful Gardens is just that: a gorgeous and graceful quilt that features traditional piecing techniques and an optional machine embroidered church with floral accents. During this 13-month Block of the Month program, you will receive all the fabrics necessary to complete the quilt top, including all borders and binding. There is a $20 non-refundable registration fee, then $35 per month for 13 months. The embroidery CD is an optional addition. Classes with Maria Hedrick are included and feature an opening lesson from Kaye England herself via video in each class. Classes are scheduled for the 4th Monday of each month from 6pm – 8pm beginning January 25th. Nifty Notions rulers are required.
Lumina Feathered Star Size 96” x 96”
Judy Niemeyer’s Lumina quilt has been re-colored with her Seasonal Portraits fabric collection and shines and sparkles in blue and yellow. Foundation paper piecing is used to assemble the units, then traditional piecing and curved piecing techniques finish the assembly. During this 6-month Block of the Month program, you will receive the pattern, all paper piecing papers, and all fabrics needed to make the Lumina quilt top, including binding. There is a $20 non-refundable registration fee, then $85 per month for 6 months with the class option, or $65 per month without classes. Shipping is available. Monthly classes with Cathy Lamont are scheduled for the 3rd Saturday of each month (with the exceptions of March and April falling on the 2nd Saturday) from 11am – 3pm beginning February 20th. Amish with A Twist III: Best of Friends Size 98” x 107”
Amish With A Twist III: Best of Friends is a bright and cheery follow-up to the preceding two Amish With A Twist quilts from Nancy Rink. This quilt features four optional machine appliquéd blocks in place of the pieced ones but is gorgeous either way. Choose the appliqué option and all your appliqué piece cutting is done for you with laser cut pieces! During this 10-month Block of the Month program, you will receive the pattern and all fabrics needed to make the quilt top, including binding. There is a $20 non-refundable registration fee, then $23 per month for 10 months or $29 with the appliqué option. We have a solid backing option for an additional $70 which will be given to you on month 10. Shipping is available for all of our out-of-state customers.
Breakfast Club 2016
FARM GIRL VINTAGE
Our 6th Annual Breakfast Club will begin again this spring and this time we are headin’ to the farm! Lori Holt’s 3rd book, Farm Girl Vintage, includes easy and adorable sampler blocks with a “fun on the farm” theme. Come jump on the wagon with us here in the shop as we take it month by month and sew Lori's sampler blocks. Plus, enjoy a bonus Pig and Cow block to make your Farm Girl Vintage Quilt special! On every second Saturday morning of the month at 9am, starting March 12th, we will have coffee, donuts, learning… and FUN! At the first meeting we will get you excited, show the quilts, talk about the procedures we have for the program and get you started on your first 5 blocks. Then we will have 10 more classes of learning, sharing and showing. The last meeting in February 2017 will be the reveal party where we share all the fun we have had sewing and reveal our quilt tops. The cost for the Breakfast Club membership is $20 per month for 11 months, or pay in full at time of sign up for just $200 for the entire year. This includes your book, monthly block fabrics, your choice of block background and sashing fabrics, plus class time instruction. (Borders and binding are not included.) We will be giving away a large prize basket at the end of the 12 months and a gift certificate to have your Farm Girl Vintage quilt top quilted by a professional quilter. You will receive a raffle ticket for these prizes at every meeting when you bring in your previous months completed blocks, and another for coming on-time to class. You will also receive a punch card for a discount on any one item just for attending that month, completed blocks or not. There is no sewing at this 1-hour meeting, just some lecture-style instruction, plenty of your show-andtells, and some “what’s new and happening” at Quiltique. How do I rate my Skill Level?
Beginner: I have little or no experience with quilt making or sewing. I haven’t used or have little experience using a sewing machine. Advanced Beginner: I have experience with a rotary cutter and piecing and/or have basic sewing skills and knowledge. I have completed at least two or three projects using a sewing machine. Intermediate: I am comfortable with interpreting patterns and designs and have made several quilts or garments. I have good working knowledge of using a sewing machine.
