Letter from the Editor

Most of you reading this newsletter LOVE to sew. You love stitching, quilting, sewing clothes, watching your machine do beautiful embroidery or all of the above. Well I have a confession to make, sewing is not my thing. There… I said it! [Insert emoji face with the hands over the mouth] For many years, I so very much wanted it to be. I have felt that it was my duty to all of you, our customers, to LOVE sewing. Not that I have not tried. I know how to sew, quilt and recently have learned many garment sewing techniques. Even right now, gorgeous new fabrics from our shelves are setting in my sewing room and my grey couch has been yearning for a lovely quilt for two years. So I guess you now might be wondering why I do what I do? If maybe I don’t enjoy it. Well, actually I LOVE what I do. I LOVE to see someone’s face light up when they walk thru the front door of the shop. I LOVE to go to Quilt Market and search for the most beautiful sewing projects to bring home to all of you. I LOVE it when a class sells out because you are so eager and excited to learn that new technique or make that project. I LOVE when someone takes time to write a glowing review of the shop online and share with the world what a wonderful experience they had at Quiltique. I LOVE when we have an event and there is a line of you outside patiently waiting to come in. I LOVE to arrange a new display in the shop and see that several items have sold from the display and I have to fix it up again. And yes, I LOVE fabric…and quilts…and fashion…and home décor…and gardening. After 15 years, I am lucky enough to LOVE my job. I may not LOVE to sit down at a sewing machine, but I LOVE to serve and be the funnel that brings you things that you LOVE. I also know that I can speak for my family as well, and say that they each individually LOVE their role here and have their own list of why they LOVE this place. Thank you, all of you, for making it all worthwhile. Thank you for your support for all these years. Thank you for sharing your LOVE of sewing and creating with our family and letting us into your lives and into the stories behind what you make and why you make it. Please join us on April 20th and 21st as we celebrate and say “Cheers!” to another 15 years together! I hope you find something you LOVE in this 34th edition of The Stash. Happy sewing!

– Jennifer, Kara, Jan and Bob and the rest of the Quiltique family

ROW BY ROW 2018…SEW MUSICAL is music to our ears! Travel Dates: June 21st thru September 4th

It all began in 2011, with 20 quilt shops across New York State. Fast forward to last year, 2017 with over 2800 quilt shops participating worldwide! We here at Quiltique love the RxRE and are very excited about the all-new 2018 Row by Row Sew Musical! Not only is this years’ theme really fun, this year brings new and exciting shapes and a few new improvements. There are now four different shapes with 7 different directional options for shops to choose from when designing their row. How exciting! Now the finished quilts can be more creative than ever. This year also brings an extended period for you to travel and purchase kits and get patterns. Although you can still only get FREE patterns during the summer travel dates, you will still be able to purchase kits and patterns thru the fall. Row by Row Junior is also returning again this year with adorable new patterns all with the music theme! Your kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews can get involved and get sewing. At participating shops, free patterns and kits will be available that focus on basic sewing skills for the younger generation. What a great way to get kids excited about learning a lifetime skill! There are great prizes for both adults and kids too who turn in their completed projects first. But it is not all about winning; just enjoy travelling around and supporting local fabric and quilt shops across the country or even the world. Visit www.rowbyrowexperience.com to learn more and start planning your summer travels. Also be sure to check out the individual state Facebook pages to see all the different rows in person. This year is sure to be Rockin’ (in our Blue Suede Shoes…HINT HINT!)

THE STASH NEWSLETTER MAY – AUGUST 2018

Quiltique is pleased to welcome Blair Stocker of Wise Craft Handmade...making the old new again. FIND VALUE IN YOUR SCRAPS Friday, June 8, 6pm, Lecture Fee: $20 Using scrap fabrics and making do is the very essence of quiltmaking. In this lecture and trunk show, Blair explains how she explores color value in the old and new fabrics she has collected over the years. By playing with light and dark color values in various prints, Blair is able to create and design dynamic quilts that can “trick the eye” into seeing the pattern or design from one perspective, but looks wonderfully scrappy and interesting from another. There are interactive parts of the lecture and chances to exchange scraps and interact as a group.

UPCYCLE YOUR QUILTMAKING Exploring Blair’s traditionally modern aesthetic 1-Day Hands-On Workshop Skill Level: Advanced Beginner Friday, June 8, 10:00am – 4:30pm Class Fee: $75* Blair will guide you through thinking differently about your own modern quilt making. The historical foundations of quilt making and patchwork are deeply rooted in the simple concepts of necessity, creative reuse, and making new out of old. These are concepts Blair explores in her own quilt making, which she likes to call traditional modern, and make up the key concepts of her newest book, Wise Craft Quilts: A Guide to Turning Beloved Fabrics into Meaningful Patchwork. You will plan and begin executing a quilt top based on fabrics you have chosen and collected from your own life; fabrics that are or could be hiding in a drawer, your closet, the attic, or a relatives’ house. They may be as cherished as your Dad’s favorite shirts, or as mundane as last year’s clothes set aside for Goodwill. The size of this class creates a calm yet dynamic learning environment and allows optimum time for Blair to work with each student to help them develop their ideas, and offer guidance on adding and enhancing their design as needed. Box lunch is available for $13. *The Complete Quilt Design Planner™ and Ruby Ruler™ are required for class. ($14.00 & $16.00)

Summer SEW-CATION with Special Guest July 20th & 21st

THE COMPLETE QUILT DESIGN PLANNER WORKSHOP 1-Day Hands-On Workshop Skill Level: Advanced Beginner Saturday, June 9 10:00am – 4:30pm Class Fee: $75* You will design and begin piecing your very own personal quilt top design. Using this pattern system and Blair’s guidance, you will learn to use your own personal tastes and inspiration to create a unique color palette. You’ll use the coloring pages provided to create a unique design. Blair will demonstrate the concept of dark and light value in your fabrics and how to create dynamic patterns with it, using her newest acrylic ruler/ viewfinder tool, The Ruby Ruler™. This class is paced to allow optimum time for designing and sewing. It is a lot of fun to watch all the designs come together! Box lunch is available for $13. * The Complete Quilt Design Planner™ and Ruby Ruler™ are required for class. ($14.00 & $16.00).

Sewing for kids Week-long Sew Camp for Kids July 16-20…9am-12:30pm Camp fee $379

Our popular summer camp for young sewists is back with new projects for 2018! Camp Sew What is a creative opportunity for kids aged 9-15 to get experience behind a sewing machine…of their very own! They will learn their way around the machine, learn and practice basic machine techniques, and make several finished projects including their first simple quilt.

Our kid-friendly staff will lead students through a series of various projects giving them an opportunity to learn different sewing skills and practice what they’ve learned. In addition to small skill-building projects, students will make a pillowcase, an art caddy, a tote bag and finish their week by piecing a simple strip quilt and tying the top. If your child has been to Camp Sew What previously, we will have a few additional and more challenging projects available including one of the new Row by Row Jr. 2018 projects. The reduced price for returning campers who do not need a new machine is $219 (student must use the machine given to them in a previous camp). The $379 cost includes: • Their very own Eversewn Sparrow15 machine!** • Professional instruction • I Sew for Fun book and DVD by Nancy Zieman • All the fabrics students will need…their choice • Project notions including a sewing kit and thread colors • Healthy snacks each day and a pizza party on the last day!

Price Includes an Eversewn Sparrow 15 Sewing Machine!

This is a great opportunity for your kids to be creative, learn a valuable and lifelong skill, increase their confidence and have a unique experience during their summer break. A payment plan of 3 payments is available for new campers through May 31st. Any camp cancellations after 7/3/18 will incur a $100 cancellation fee. **Upgrade your child’s sewing machine! Very special savings if you choose to upgrade your child’s machine. Get a Sparrow20 for a $485 camp fee (a 15% machine savings) or a Sparrow25 for a $519 camp fee (a 20% machine savings) and this year we have added the Sparrow30 for a $589 fee (a 15% machine savings). See shop for details on all these quality machines at a great value. PLEASE NOTE: This weeklong class is for children 9 and over who want to learn how to sew. We will not be using rotary cutters, but we will be using pins, needles, scissors, hot irons, and sewing machines. You know your child best. We ask that students have the maturity to follow instructions and be careful in a potentially dangerous environment. A waiver of liability must be signed by the parent/guardian of the student.

QUILT FOR KIDS CHARITY SEW

Once again, we are calling on our great customers (That’s YOU!) and your sewing talents to help kids in need. Inspired by BERNINA, and the all new B 330 Special Edition “FIRST LOVE”, we are sponsoring a fun and rewarding day of sewing. The First Love machine was created to benefit Quilts For Kids by donating a portion of the sales to the charity. Quilts for Kids is a nonprofit organization dedicated to brightening the lives of children who suffer from abuse or life-threatening illnesses with comforting patchwork quilts.

Please join us on June 6th from 10am to 5pm, as we all work together as a community to bring smiles to kids who could really use them. Quiltique will donate the fabrics to complete the tops of kids sized quilts but we need someone to help cut and sew them up! We will have Accuquilt GO! cutters available to quickly and easily cut out the quilt pieces getting you to the sewing machine faster. The fee for this event is just $20. This fee will cover lunch that day and also help pay for the shipping of the quilts to the Quilts for Kids Headquarters in Pennsylvania. Let’s use our talents to create and sew for kids in need!
