Letter from the Editor Seventy degrees and sunny. Just the way we like it in Vegas! As the weather heats up here in the desert, we won’t be slowing down. In fact… “times they are a changing” here at Quiltique right along with the weather. How do you like change? Personally, I’m in the middle. I don’t always seek it out, especially if it doesn’t seem necessary, but when opportunity comes knocking, I am not afraid to make a leap. How about change in your creativity? Do you just love to always do the same thing, or do you seek out new projects, skills or new fabric substrates? Do you buy the kit or choose your own fabrics? Well, whichever way you are, you are pretty special. Here at Quiltique, we have a lot of change happening. Change that this shop has not seen since we opened our doors 15…excuse me, 16 years ago. It is a new brand and line of sewing machines! A big one, or should I say a BABY one? Yep, that is right, Quiltique is now a BABY LOCK authorized dealer. Scary, yes, but has us buzzing like the spring bees! Lynne, Cathy, Glenda and I just returned from Fenton, Missouri on Sunday to learn the in’s and out’s of this great company and their machines. Now, don’t you worry BERNINA die-hards, we still LOVE our BERNINA too and would never give that up, but there is room for another great brand here at Quiltique and we think you will agree. Be sure to join us for the official launch day, May 25th for great prizes, demos and lots of other surprises. Let’s kick this off together! Additionally, there are a ton of other great things happening around here this summer and I hope you will take time to enjoy some of them. We are now a certified Kimberbell shop, which means we will have exclusive events and parties here for all you Kimberbell fans… right gnomies! Actually, if you are into machine embroidery, there is a lot going on for you this summer. All you quilters better come out for Joanna and meet this talented lady as she teaches you the Fig Tree way. She has more talent in her little finger than I do in my entire body! Well, I better get unpacked. Can’t wait for you to meet the new Babies! Happy Sewing! – Jennifer and the entire Quiltique Team

Quiltique Welcomes

JOANNA FIGUEROA

FIG TREE & CO. LECTURE

of Fig Tree & Co.

Friday, May 10 – 6pm

Lecture Fee: $20

Spend the evening with Joanna as she tells her story of how her company first started off as “Figlets”, selling small quilted pillows, wall hangings and other accessories in local boutiques, art shows and street fairs. Then the “figlet” grew while working at her local quilt shop, first as an employee and then as a quilt and sewing teacher. She saw the need for good patterns which propelled her quickly down the path of designing her own quilt and sewing patterns. It wasn’t long before that itch to make art and sell it, resurfaced for her and FIG TREE was born. The rest is a whirlwind of good timing, good people and, we think, good design. FREE fabric gift for attendees.

MILK AND BLOSSOMS

1-Day Hands-On Workshop, Skill Level: Advanced Beginner Friday, May 10 – 10:00am – 4:30pm Class Fee: $89* Joanna is just a bit in love with these pieced pitcher blocks and the flower . . . well you can see that they would add instant charm to any room of the house! And yes, it’s all pieced. No appliqué, no paper piecing and no templates. All of the pieces are totally straightforward and use Joanna’s favorite sew and flip method. Quiltique has a kit made with Joanna’s new Chantilly collection or you can choose a set of your favorite country flavored florals. Come spend the day sewing while Joanna shares tips and tricks for this charming quilt. All who attend will receive a special little single of Milk and Blossoms accented with a little pieced scallop border! Box lunch is available for $13. *Pattern purchase required (Milk and Blossoms by Fig Tree Quilts $11.00). Kit Available.

TRELLIS

1-Day Hands-On Workshop, Skill Level: Advanced Beginner Saturday, May 11 – 10:00am – 4:30pm Class Fee: $89* Joanna kind of wants to make Trellis with every color of the rainbow for the background. Starting with a Layer Cake makes your fabric selection for the blocks super easy, but this would also be fantastic with all your favorite florals from your stash. Blocks are super simple and straightforward, and she thinks you will be surprised at how quickly and easily this project will come together! Joanna suggests you could also choose a more modern dark background for some fun combinations. Box lunch is available for $13. *Pattern purchase required (Trellis by Fig Tree Quilts $11.00).

Learn more about Joanna and Fig Tree & Co. @figtreeandcompany.com

T o MOM, with L ove… Visit the shop on Saturday, May 11th in celebration of awesome Mom’s everywhere and receive 20% off your ENTIRE purchase*. Light refreshments will be served.

Week-long Sew Camp for Kids June 17-21 9:00 am – 12:30 pm Camp fee $395

Our popular summer camp for young sewists is back this June! Camp Sew What is a creative opportunity for kids aged 9-15 to get experience behind a sewing machine…of their very own! They will learn their way around the machine, learn and practice basic machine techniques, and make several finished projects including their first simple quilt. Our kid-friendly staff will lead students through a series of various projects giving them an opportunity to learn different sewing skills and practice what they’ve learned. In addition to small skill-building projects, students will make a throw pillow, an earbud zipper pouch, a drawstring backpack and finish their week by piecing a simple strip quilt and tying the top. If your child has been to Camp Sew What previously, we will have a few additional and more challenging projects available. Including one of the new Row by Row Jr. 2019 projects. The reduced price for returning campers who do not need a new machine is $195 (student must use the machine given to them in a previous camp and bring basic sewing supplies).

The $395 cost includes: • • • • •

Their very own Baby Lock "joy" sewing machine! (MSRP is $399!) Professional guided instruction Deluxe Beginning Sewing Kit (valued at $99) All the fabrics and supplies students will need…their choice Healthy snacks each day and a pizza party on the last day!

This is a great opportunity for your kids to be creative and learn a valuable, lifelong skill. This camp will increase their confidence and give them a unique experience during their summer break. A payment plan of 3 payments is available for new campers through June 8th. Any camp cancellations after 6/3/19 will incur a $100 cancellation fee. PLEASE NOTE: This week-long class is for children 9 and over who want to learn how to sew. We will not be using rotary cutters, but we will be using pins, needles, scissors, hot irons, and sewing machines. You know your child best. We ask that students have the maturity to follow instructions and be careful in a potentially dangerous environment. A waiver of liability must be signed by the parent/guardian of the student.

June 28 & 29, 10am – 4:30 pm

Just $199

Boro Bag Challenge Entries due August 31st

It has been several years since we had a contest but Stori has been itching for one lately. She found this beautiful bag on Instagram by The Cutting Cloth and thought it would be perfect. We agreed! The word boro comes from the Japanese word boroboro, which means something tattered or worn out. Japanese women used the boro technique, the Japanese art of mending, to repair clothing and other items so they could be used from generation to generation. Originally, the quilting technique was applied to extend the life of ragged and tattered clothes and household items by sewing patches in place with sashiko, a simple running stitch. Typically sewn in a pattern of parallel lines, the overall sashiko design was unique to each item. Years of patching and repairing resulted in a oneof-a-kind garment or item that told a story. Vintage examples are now a collectible art form. For this contest, you will create your own Boro Bag. Using beautiful, special or interesting scraps, you can create a oneof-a-kind piece of “fabric”. Then you quilt the tapestry with a hand stitch called sashiko, or “big-stitch” and finish it with koki clips and waxed cord. Stunning! To enter the contest, all you must do is purchase the pattern (clips included) from us. Fill out the form and you are in! Entries are due back in the shop by August 31st. They will then be on display in the shop starting at our annual Back to School Carnival. Our customers will be the judges through September 13th and the bag with the most votes will win. The winner will take home a Quiltique Gift Card valued at $150. We will be having a Boro Bag class on May 21st and 28th for those interested, whether you would like to enter the contest or not.

Travel Dates: June 21st thru September 3rd Find and explore beautiful quilt shops as you travel the world! We here at Quiltique love the RxRE and are craving some fun with Taste The Experience for 2019. Thinking about it just makes me hungry because I am a total foodie! A new twist last year was four different shapes for the rows. The new shapes really mixed things up and it was fun to see the different layouts for the quilts from across the world. Also, an extended period for you to travel and purchase patterns and kits seemed to make travelers happy too. Although you can still only get FREE patterns during the summer travel dates, you will still be able to purchase patterns and kits thru the fall. Row by Row Junior has some creative new patterns this year all with the food theme! There is even a quilt layout for all the projects. Your kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews can get involved and get sewing. At participating shops, free patterns will be available that focus on basic sewing skills for the younger generation. What a great way to get kids excited about learning a lifetime skill! There are great prizes for both adults and kids too who turn in their completed projects first. But it is not all about winning; just enjoy traveling around and supporting local fabric and quilt shops across the world. Dates for winning a prize for the first quilt at any participating shop is June 21st all the way thru October 31st. Visit www.rowbyrowexperience.com to learn more and start planning your summer travels. Also be sure to check out the individual state Facebook pages to see all the different rows in person.

‘Case Race: Supporting Ryan’s Case for Smiles Saturday, August 3rd 11am – 4pm Take a day to make a difference! Teams of four will race the clock as we make pillowcases for a great cause. Put together your own team, or we’ll help you find partners. Every hour we’ll provide a “lap update” to see how many pillowcases each team has stitched up. Each member of the team with the most pillowcases at the end of the day will take home a $25 Quiltique Gift Card! Quiltique will provide the fabric for all the teams…you bring your favorite snacks, your sewing machine and supplies (rotary cutter, mat, thread, etc). We’ll spend the day making pillowcases for children who are hospitalized and undergoing cancer treatments. Many children undergoing cancer treatments can’t bring their favorite stuffed animals to the hospital because of their weakened immune systems. Ryan’s Case for Smiles (formerly ConKerr Cancer) provides these bed-bound kids with bright and cheery pillowcases to help liven up the room that they are stuck in for days, weeks, or longer. All pillowcases will count toward the APQ 1 Million Pillowcase Challenge. The current count is approximately 788,001 pillowcases nationwide and they are not stopping until they reach 1 million! Give us a call to sign up for this fun, free event! A few Baby Lock sergers will be available to support your team and the cause. No matter which team pulls it off in the end, the real winners here will be the kids! To find out more about Ryan’s Case for Smiles, please visit http://caseforsmiles.org
