Letter from the Editor Wow! 2020…Baby! A new decade is upon us. Although I don’t like to admit it, I am a child of the 70’s. The cost of a gallon of gas was thirty-six cents and there was no such thing as a home computer. There was, however, a home sewing machine in most every household that could afford it and sewing was not just a hobby but sometimes a necessity. Today, our machines enrich our lives as an essential tool for self-expression, and while not every household has a sewing machine these days, every home should. Sewing brings so much joy to so many of us, maybe this year is the year to share your talents with a friend or family member? Here at Quiltique we are ALWAYS happy to share our love of sewing with you. There are so many fun things happening in the coming months. It definitely feels like a NEW YEAR! We have a Tula quilt challenge, an Aurifil event and new thread program, an awesome Designs in Machine Embroidery event with Eileen Roche, two new Block of the Month programs, and the amazing Amanda Murphy in the house! Let’s not forget Quiltique’s 17th Anniversary celebration in April and the 2020 DQN Quilt Show. I should also mention that there is a new dream team - Baby Lock and OESD! They have teamed up for a not to miss two-day event in March. Plus, the usual amount of top-notch classes, gorgeous fabrics, new machines and money saving promotions that will just keep you coming back for more! With all this, who wouldn’t want to sew? Quiltique is pleased to announce the Tula Pink “HomeMade” Challenge, sponsored by FreeSpirit Fabrics and Aurifil. One quilt from Quiltique will be submitted and juried by Tula Pink for the chance to hang as part of the HomeMade Challenge exhibit at the Fall International Quilt Market and Festival in Houston, TX in October 2020. The challenge encourages quilters to pay tribute to what drives the quilter/ sewist/maker to create with their hands, through the creation of a 60” x 60” quilt (minimum size) featuring 80% of the new Tula Pink HomeMade fabrics and using Aurifil threads. Tula and her panel of experts will jury submitted quilts that speak to the glory, attitude and beauty that comes from the privilege of saying “Hey, I made that.” One first place winner will earn a prize package of over $10,000 including a BERNINA 570QE Special Edition by Tula Pink sewing machine, Tula Pink Fabric from FreeSpirit, an assortment of sanctioned Tula Pink Aurifil thread collections and other related sewing and quilting products. One Viewer’s Choice, selected via social media, will win a package of sewing related items valued at over $1,200, as well as one Honorable Mention winner will receive a prize package valued at over $1,000. All winners will receive a quilt show ribbon! Additionally, an in-store prize will be awarded to the viewer’s choice winner from Quiltique. This prize includes a $500 Tula Pink Grand Prize package featuring limited edition items acquired from the International Quilt Market in past years.¨ The challenge runs from March – June 30, 2020. We will work with pen and paper in the first half of class, designing on top of piecing handouts. Events and 0 Happenings A Quiltique SEWcial Club Event The much-anticipated sequel to the very popular Farm Girl Vintage quilt by Lori Holt is finally here! Our newest “SEW”cial Club event will begin this spring and we are headin’ BACK to the farm! Lori Holt’s new book, Farm Girl Vintage 2, includes easy and adorable sampler blocks with that same “fun on the farm” theme just like the original. Come jump on the wagon with us here in the shop as we take it month by month and sew all 45, 6” and 12” sampler blocks together as a group. On every first Thursday at 6pm, starting February 6th, we will have refreshments, snacks, learning… and FUN! At the first meeting we will get you excited, show the quilt, talk about the procedures we have for the program and get you started on your first 5 blocks. Then we will have 10 more classes of learning, sharing and showing. The last meeting in December 2020, will be the reveal party where we share all the fun we have had sewing and display our quilt tops. The cost for our latest SEWcial Club membership is $25 per month for 11 months. This includes monthly block fabrics, block backgrounds plus class time instruction. Book, borders and binding are not included. You will receive 15% off these additional items plus a few other optional notions after we get started in March. We will be giving away a $200 gift card at the end of the 11 months. You will receive a raffle ticket for this prize at every meeting when you bring in your previous months completed blocks and another for coming on-time to class. Just because it’s called the blindstitch foot doesn’t mean you have to make a blind hem. Learn how to achieve great looking pintucks on woven and knit fabrics. You can use this technique to embellish your fabric to create everything form heirloom yokes to t-shirt panels and pillow tops.

DIAGONAL SEAM TAPE Diagonal Seam Tape is a perfect solution for sewing straight diagonal seams without having to mark any lines! The special washi tape is strong, thin, and removes cleanly after sewing projects. Simply place the tape in front of the feed dogs with the red line in front of the needle as the stitch line. The black lines on either side of the center line represent a perfect 1/4” seam allowance and are a great resource to use when making half square triangles or learning to keep a perfect 1/4”. The piecing is all 4 patches, 9 patches, half-square triangles, log cabin blocks, and such. Granted, it is a lot of piecing - but it’s simple. Once you get all the blocks made - they are then sewn together in 9 vertical rows. SIMPLE. The finished quilt measures 80” X 90”. During this 10-month block of the month program, you will receive the pattern and fabrics needed to complete the quilt top including the binding.
