Letter from the Editor

"Are we there yet?" is the question often muttered from the kids in the backseat on a long road trip. The same feeling comes to mind as I contemplate where we are in our “getting back to normal” journey for the last year now. And while we are moving in the right direction, we still have obstacles to overcome, changes to accept and hurdles to get over. Some days we have small wins and feel confident, and some days, a setback, feeling like we are just spinning our wheels. Still we push forward, day by day, looking forward each time to seeing your smiling faces in the shop, supporting us.

This upcoming weekend, as I write, we will be celebrating our 19th year in business. While so many things have changed over the years, more have stayed the same. Mostly you, our great customers, have been our rock and our reason. We still have, after all these years, you, and our shared passion for creating and our same commitment to bringing you all the best in service, fabrics, sewing machines and education which keeps us all giving the best of ourselves to each other and our shared communities. Thank you for being such great partners in this journey!

Please enjoy these pages of The Stash Newsletter, our 45th edition. You will notice that we are celebrating our young sewists in July with an entire month of fun camps and classes for kids. We hope you will share your passion for sewing with the young ones in your lives and send them our way. We will take good care of them, helping to foster their creative spirits. Machine Embroidery is also a prominent theme this summer. Be sure to check out the great machine embroidery events for those of you who love your embroidery machines or are just getting started.

I hope you will choose to enjoy the coming summer months with a trip away somewhere on your bucket list or will start a project that you have had on your “someday” list. If there is one thing that we should learn from all this continued uncertainty, is that it is time to seize the day! No more waiting.

Ukraine Fundraiser

I am sure you, like so many of us, have been watching in horror what is happening in Ukraine. It seems just so surreal. If you have been thinking about how you can help or what you can do, Pat Sloan, a popular quilt and fabric designer, has been a leader in guiding us, as Quilters, on how we can help. Pat has gathered many ways and ideas on how we can reach those Ukrainian families in need. Here are just a few:

Donate Money to Unicef to help Ukrainian children at: ukraine.unicef. org.au/quiltersstandforukraine

JULY 18 THRU 22 NEW FOR 2022…Camp Sew What Else is the next step in your child’s sewing adventure. This camp is for kids aged 9-15 who have experience sewing with a machine before. Maybe they were with us for Camp Sew What in the past (or are coming this summer) or already know sewing basics and their way around a sewing machine. Camp Sew What Else is for experienced kids who want something fun and different to do this summer and want to advance their sewing skills.

Campers will complete a project each day, including a laundry bag, colorful fabric shoelaces, Bernie the stuffed scrappy cat, a personalized lanyard and a plaid throw quilt.

The $299 fee will include all the same things in Camp Sew What, excluding the sewing machine. Supplies, snacks and fun are all included! This is a great opportunity for your kids to continue their sewing and creating journey, increase their confidence and have a blast during their summer break. Class time is 9:00am to 12:30pm each day.

PLEASE NOTE: In order to sign up for Camp Sew What Else, children must have completed our Camp Sew What program, or be familiar with basic sewing terms and techniques. Basic machine fundamentals will not be taught. Any machine used by the student must be a sewing machine they received from our program in the past or their own personal machine.

We do not offer free tech services for this program should something happen to your child’s machine.

2022 WEEK-LONG SEW CAMP FOR KIDS JULY 5 THRU 9 OR JULY 11 THRU 15 Camp Sew What is a creative opportunity for kids aged 9-15 to get experience behind a sewing machine…of their very own!

They will learn their way around the machine, learn and practice basic machine techniques, and make several finished projects including their first simple quilt.

Our kid-friendly staff will lead students through a series of various projects giving them an opportunity to learn different sewing skills and practice what they’ve learned. In addition to small skill-building projects, students will make a reading pillow, a rolled pencil pouch, a zipper pouch, a drawstring backpack and finish their week by making a strip quilt. Class time is 3 ½ hours each day from 9:00am to 12:30pm.

This year we have added a second week of camp so that you can choose which week works best for you. We are again limiting class size so the kiddos get the most from camp. If your kids have attended Camp Sew What before, we have also added Camp Sew What Else!

The $449 cost includes: • Their very own Baby Lock JOY sewing machine!

(MSRP is $399!)

• Professional guided instruction • Deluxe Beginning Sewing Kit (valued at $99) • All the fabrics and supplies students will need…their choice • Healthy snacks each day and a pizza party on the last day!

This is a great opportunity for your kids to be creative, learn a valuable and lifelong skill, increase their confidence and have a unique experience during their summer break.

A payment plan of 3 payments is available for new campers through June 18th. Any camp cancellations after 6/11/21 will incur a $100 cancelation fee.

PLEASE NOTE: This weeklong class is for children 9 and over who want to learn how to sew. We will not be using rotary cutters, but we will be using pins, needles, scissors, hot irons, and sewing machines. You know your child best. We ask that students have the maturity to follow instructions and be careful in a potentially dangerous environment. A waiver of liability must be signed by the parent/guardian of the student.

All New! PRISMATIC BLOCK OF THE MONTH Begins July 1st This fascinating new Prismatic Block of the Month Quilt design featuring Wilmington Batiks is a tribute to color! It features a full spectrum of rich colors set against black creating a true showpiece quilt that will brighten a traditional room, enhance a modern décor, or pull an eclectic room together. There are 16 gorgeous batiks in all.

The Prismatic design is 91” square and features both square & rectangular blocks. What makes this quilt interesting and different than many other traditional quilts, is that this quilt is primarily the same block but in many different sizes. The pattern will include several templates for the rectangular triangle units, making this quilt accessible to moderately skilled quilters. Add some simple quilting to this beauty, and you have a fabulous finish.

Prismatic is a 10-month BLOCK-OF-THE-MONTH program which will begin July 1st. The cost of this program is $30 per month plus a $20 enrollment fee. This includes all fabrics to make the quilt including binding. Printed full color pattern is also included. Backing is sold separately.

PAPER PIECING 101

BEGINNING QUILTING Pre-requisite for all other quilting classes if you have never quilted before.

This beginning quilting program is designed to take you from your first cut to your last stitch and enjoy the process each step of the way. You will learn everything about making a quilt including choosing the best quilting tools and fabrics, rotary cutting with accuracy, block assembly, attaching your borders, quilting the quilt on your machine and binding. You will finish this 7-week course with a complete and finished quilt – made by you! Basic sewing knowledge is required and there is sewing homework between classes. Supply list and instruction manual will be handed out during the first class. *Instruction manual purchase required at time of sign up: $15.00. Fabric for quilt must be purchased at Quiltique at the end of 1st class.
