Spiritual Project Work: New Construction & Renovations
Ankrom Moisan has a rich history of collaborating with faith-based organizations, specializing in designing spaces for worship and spiritual reflection. Our journey began in the 1990s with our first house of worship, propelled by our expertise in hospitality and Pacific Northwest style, first shown in Skamania Lodge.
Since then, word of mouth has fueled our growth in faith-based design, drawing inspiration from community centers, public buildings, hotels, theaters, and other complex architectural spaces. Each project reflects our commitment to providing inspiration that resonates throughout the process and the end result. Our experience across diverse building types makes us an ideal partner for today’s spiritual projects.

Good Shepherd Community Church

With their facilities bursting at the seams and continued rapid growth predicted for the future, Good Shepherd required a major expansion. The problem: to build all the spaces and parking the church needed would cost nearly double what the church could afford.
With this great challenge in mind, the design team developed a hybrid building design that combines three buildings into one, saving $10 million while still accommodating all of the church’s programming needs. By rethinking traditional multipurpose rooms, AMA designed a building that provides quality space for worship, sports, banquets, and meetings. Half of the seating is situated on a movable flat floor; the other half is fixed theatrical seating on a sloped floor, arranged in a fan-like shape. The worship center has excellent acoustics and sightlines, comfortable seating, and theatre-quality lighting and sound systems. The flat floor converts to a gymnasium, or, when combined with the 6,000 sq. ft. foyer, becomes a banquet room for receptions and community events.

Sunset Presbyterian Church

Sunset Presbyterian Church’s architecture reflects the Northwest style of carefully scaled buildings and natural landscaping to promote welcoming and familiar imagery. Situated on 15.5 acres, Sunset Presbyterianis organized around a central courtyard, has high visibility, excellent access, and enough parking for 900 cars. A separate entry allows convenient access for children and also serves as a weekday entry for other Church programs. The Campus master plan ultimately allows 135,000 s.f., including a 2,500 seat sanctuary and 400 seat chapel. A multipurpose room and fellowship hall served as an interim sanctuary prior to main sanctuary construction.

Rolling Hills Community Church

The Rolling Hills Community Church congregation was in need of a large space to bring their community and worshipers together under one roof. The 180,000 sq. ft. building was designed specifically for their growing needs located in Tualatin, Oregon. The expanded layout includes conference rooms, classrooms, public meetings spaces, and a worship center with a stage and seating for more than 2,500 people. The worship center featured state-ofthe-art audio and visual systems for their large congregation to keep connected to the service.

Beaverton Christian Church

A three-phased master plan of an existing suburban church campus, this project included both new construction and a remodel of existing facilities. The phasing allows for the campus to grow appropriately with the congregation. In the first phase, a much-needed shared parking facility developed between the school district, the local Parks and Recreation District, and the neighboring elementary school.
The second phase of the development was a 10,000 sq. ft. youth center, including a 400seat multi-purpose room with retractable, tiered seating; the remodel and restoration of the original chapel building; new classrooms; and new office space.
The final phase included the construction of a family life center, which contains a commercial kitchen, café, bookstore, gymnasium/fellowship hall, classrooms, offices, and storage. The main fellowship hall opens to an on-site community park that can also be used as overflow parking for the church.

Washington Family Ranch

For nearly two decades, Young Life, a nondenominational Christian youth outreach organization, has partnered seamlessly with Ankrom Moisan to transform the historic Big Muddy Ranch into a haven for young minds: the Washington Family Ranch.
Designed for middle school students, Creekside Camp welcomes up to 350 campers amidst a setting reminiscent of early mining towns. Cabinstyle dormitories offer panoramic views of rolling hills, ensuring both safety and a sense of wonder. From custom mining tool-inspired door handles to a tranquil plunge pool amidst rocky landscapes, every detail evokes a blend of nostalgia and contemporary comfort. Natural wood and timber form the core of Creekside’s aesthetic, with structures like the expansive dining hall featuring a clear-span heavy timber truss roof, true to its mining heritage.

Spanning 135,000 sq. ft., Creekside includes five dormitories, an activity center, staff housing, and amenities such as a commercial kitchen and dynamic water park at its heart—a hub for shared experiences.

Salvation Army Eastside Community Center

Receiver of the 2017 NAIOP Community Impact Award, the 2-story, 16,700 sq. ft. Salvation Army Eastside Community Center facility includes a chapel, nursery, gym, food bank, multi-purpose meeting spaces, classrooms and administrative offices in Bellevue, Washington. Ankrom Moisan addressed the Salvation Army’s unique mix of user populations in the design. The finished building creates separate spaces while still feeling integrated, and the structure’s simple architectural lines belie the extensive program coordination and interconnected services offered.

Masterplanning & Studies
Most churches need to adapt to the changing needs of their congregations and supporters. Sometimes that means studying a small existing space and sometimes that means studying many acres. We have experience in all scales of planning and studies for new and existing faith organizations.

Site Feasibility Studies

Today is an interesting time for US based faith organizations. Across the country, pastors, ministers, priests, councils, and boards are wrestling with how to most responsibly maintain aging facilities and how the needs of their physical buildings can keep up with the projected uses of the future.
Ankrom Moisan has been doing feasibility studies for our clients for forty years. We can quickly help your organization focus on a future vision that is grounded in the allowable codes. For many organizations, we also help in expanding their mission by adding affordable housing to their property.

Whether its a second look at a feasibility study or a proposal for a renovation or addition, we would love to meet you and learn about the hopes and dreams for your faith-based organization. To learn more, please reach out to either of us at Ankrom Moisan where we inspire and empower people to explore beyond the expected.
