Once upon a time there was a company that had a runway
The history of cold weather testing in northern Sweden with the region of Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur as the largest test centre in the world, began in 1973. It all began with a seaplane and two entrepreneurs from Arjeplog, Per-Axel Andersson and David Sundström. They were members of a flying club and had access to a ploughed runway on Lake Hornavan. One day a group of technicians from the company Teldix showed up. (Later on, Teldix was bought by Bosch) They had heard about the runway and it was a perfect place to do some tests. And the rest, as we say, is history...

Is it just a lucky coincidence that the area is so successful in winter testing or is there another explanation? Lars Sundström, managing director of Icemakers, the pioneer company of the vehicle testing industry, believes that an entrepreneurial spirit as well as a quest to maintain a high level of service are some of the main reasons for the success. His colleague, Michael Lindeman, managing director of Icemakers Test (a subsidiary company to Icemakers) agrees and adds a few other important factors that have made this the largest cold weather testing area in the world: access to lakes, an infrastructure for electronic systems and the fact that all key people in the industry are at the same place, at the same time.

A genuine interest for cars made him a car spy There are a few dozen in the world but in Sweden there is only one professional car spy, and that is photographer Andreas Mau. For the past thirty years Mau has travelled around the world, taking pictures of cars. During the winter test season from December to March, he spends his time in Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur searching for new and interesting vehicles. The way car spies are seen by the auto industry and its response to them and their work have fundamentally changed during the years. Andreas Mau says that back then there was a hostile atmosphere and car spies were often targets for both harassment and violence. But on the other hand there was not as much secrecy and the prototypes were shown more openly. They were often parked outside restaurants and hotels, which of course made his work easier. Today, the situation is different. Car spies are seen as a part of the car testing industry and there is a mutual respect and understanding. Mau told us that he has a lot of friends in the business and if they meet at a restaurant or at a hotel they say hello and talk to each other. He knows that they are useful for the testing industry and of great importance for both manufacturers and consumers. The development of internet has also changed the terms of the work of the car spies. Nowadays when pictures circulate so easily and quickly via internet they are not as newsworthy as they used to be.

The Reindeer - All important in Sami Culture The Sami culture and the reindeer are strongly associated with each other and historically the reindeer have been invaluable and of great importance to the Sami. The reindeer have also been absolutely nessesary for life in the mountains and have provided food, warm clothes, materials for tools and crafts and for pulling sledges. The reindeer is well-adapted to long, cold winters. Each part of the reindeer’s body is covered with hair. The hairs are hollow to provide extra insulation. It also has a form of alternating heater in the legs and the ability to heat the cold air in its mouth. There are about 250,000 reindeer in Sweden and only members of a Sami
village have the right to own reindeer. If you ever have been around a herd of reindeer you may have paid attention to the sound. Mostly grunts, but also the characteristic popping which is a sound that occurs when the reindeer walk. It comes from the legs as the tendon slides over the bone, making the popping sound.
It is believed that the sound may have a safety function. Reindeer are herd animals and if one reindeer gets upset then the rest of the flock can hear that the frequency of the popping sound increases and they then know that they need to be more aware and perhaps even try to escape.

Passion gave a first place Clarion Collection Hotel in Arvidsjaur has been ranked number one in a guest study. High Speed Linked to Wildlife Collisions Reducing speed is the best way to avoid wildlife collisions. Jonas Stenberg, a reindeer herder from Arvidsjaur, is concerned about the large number of reindeer killed in traffic every year. Jonas Stenberg from Arvidsjaur is vice president of the Västra Kikkejaur Sami village. He says that with the predator pressure that exists, it is unfortunate when they lose breeding reindeer in traffic accidents. A productive reindeer cow

can never be replaced with the money that they receive for every reindeer that is accidentally killed. The Sami community feel that they have very good cooperation with the people involved in winter testing and say that the drivers behave in an exemplary manner. Stenberg says that despite this, they cannot ignore the fact that the traffic increases substantially during the winter season and therefore they appeal to everyone to reduce their speed. It is clear that lower speed is closely linked to a reduced number of dead reindeer.

The roars are powerful and deafening and the snow jets in the air, when the cars drive past the curve where we stand. A roar which quickly disappears when they pass, on the way to the next curve along the lake track. We are in Lippi. Here lives the car enthusiast Stefan Hallnor, that each winter keep ice tracks on the lake next to his house. Tracks that he has for fun and for buisness. – Well, mostly for fun, laughs Stefan. Winter is tough for the birds Snow and cold weather make life tough for the birds that stay here during the winter. It becomes a little easier for them if we give them food, since they need a lot of fat to withstand the cold. Feeding the birds also gives us a chance to get a closer look at them.
The beautiful bullfinch, the red male and the grey brown female, are often seen at the birds’ dinner table.

It is fascinating, exciting and entertaining to have the possibility to watch birds at close range. You can study their behaviour, their differences and similarities as well as the differences between the various species of birds. The birds eat a little of everything but it is important for them to get a lot of energy, especially when it is really cold. Often they prefer seeds with a high content of fat such as sunflower and hemp seeds.
A willow tit is eating seeds to keep warm in the cold.
Great tits are perhaps the most common birds seen here in winter.

Ice fishing is a popular spare time activity
Ice fishing, or pimla.’ When you ‘pimpla’ or ice-fish you fish with a short rod through a hole in the ice. There are many techniques and different lures but a good rule is to first let down the lure to the bottom and then wind it up a little. On the fishing hook you can use live or synthetic worms or maggots and vary between jerking the rod and holding it still.
Fishing while peeking into the hole. A most fascinating form of fishing is ‘peek fishing’. A hole is made over a very shallow bottom or sandbar. You lie down, with your face over the hole in the ice and you are able to watch the fish swimming past, under the ice.
Net fishing. Fishing with nets is a way of catching a lot of fish. The net is made of nylon, here used under the frozen Lake Hornavan. Using a chainsaw is one way of making holes in the ice - mostly for net fishing. For other types of ice fishing you use a ice drill. A happy fisher with a newly caught trout.
Pike trap. A Pike trap is a springloaded hook that closes over the head of the pike.

HORNAVANSKOLAN AUTOMOTIVE TESTING TECHNOLOGY Hornavanskolan, with the workshop and technical laboratory, now also provides a new programme, called ‘Fordonstestteknik’, together with ‘Teknikprogrammet’ - BilSystemTeknik (BST). We are facing a shift in technology in terms of energy in vehicles. For many years to come, the development of electric and hybrid vehicles will increase and be a large part of the test operations. A vehicle testing technician will also be working with the development of products where safety regulations and recommendations have not yet been decided. For this reason, the need for greater competence in the physics and chemistry of electricity is much higher now than the usual programme in the automotive program. Our pupils in the Automotive Testing Technology programme will therefore have a good foundation to stand on when they go out to work or choose to study further. Knowledge of a variety of computer systems is needed as well as the new technology that is becoming increasingly complex and specific to vehicles or professional fields. Therefore, our educational programme aims at developing the pupils’ ability to use computers and computer systems in whatever way required. Once they have completed the training, they will

WORK PLACEMENT During each of the three years, pupils have the opportunity to make study visits and to receive workplace training. This is possible via work placements at various motor vehicle companies, component manufacturers and others associated with the automotive industry in Sweden and in Europe.
CO-OPERATION We are very pleased with the existing cooperation between Hornavanskolan and the vehicle and component companies in Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur (both local and foreign) in terms of work placement, lectures and other forms of involvement. We hope that this co-operation will ultimately include all the companies that are winter testing in the area. This is of vital importance and a decisive factor in guaranteeing a high level of education and training.
