A 1:1 scale model of the Arctic Arc Week eight in February, the climate hall, called the Arctic Arc, will be laid out as a full-scale demo on the ice of lake Ullak. This will be a way of visualizing the hall and to give a sense of the size and the proportions. A way of trying if this interesting but enormous project is on the right path. – We will invite all companies in the Automotive business field which are active in the area, policy- and decision-makers, media and others with an interest in this project, says Lars Holmgren, ATM, Arjeplogs Test Arjeplog
Partners of Xpress Arjeplog
Management - who is responsible for the demo and the activities in february. An important part of the demo-week is the feedback they hope to get from the companies testing cars and components in the area during winter. – Yes, one of the main purposes of this overhaul is to improve the facility. To give an opportunity for interested parties to get a sense for the Arc, the functions and the scale. Secondly is to awaken an interest and to virtually show the usefulness and necessity of such a facility, says Lars. Continueed on page 2

Every New Year gives me the opportunity to welcome all of you arriving in Arjeplog to engage in the automotive winter testing. And I hope that it is a heartfelt welcome – I certainly mean it. You are important to us! As you might now, Arjeplog is a small municipality (or kommun, as we say). As I’m sure you’ve noticed travelling here, it is also remote. The population of just 2,900 people makes up for a population density of 0.2 per square kilometer. If Berlin and Arjeplog traded population density, there would be just 178 living in the German capital – and a whopping 50.2 millions here… If we throw in our 8,727 lakes we could fit another 7.7 millions inhabitants in our kommun. So we’re huge. And tiny. That gives us a lot to worry about (like how to finance our welfare with so little tax money – we tax permanent residents only – or how to get children from remote villages to school), but also opportunities. We have northern lights and midnight sun. We have a long history of hunters, gatherers, indigenous Sami, mining and forest industry. And we have huge masses of beautiful land and water. This is where you join our history. Using small roads and frozen lakes as proving grounds, the automotive testing business has made Arjeplog to the prime test bed of hi-tech systems, parts and vehicles. And like tourists, immigrants and other newcomers, you bring the wealth, stories, knowhow and ideas that every region needs to develop. Thanks to you, we have more entrepreneurs, more restaurants and more hotels that any other kommun of our size. And more fun! Enjoy the hospitality of our locals, the skiing tracks at Öberget and Djuptjärn, the downhill skiing at Galtis and in Jäckvik, the views of our mountainous archipelago and the possibility to go snowmobiling, join a moose safari – and don’t forget to visit our Silver Museum. It’s a great way to get to know us living hear. I’d love to hear from you and even if we don’t have the monetary means to make everything perfect in an instant, we sure are dedicated to making your time in Arjeplog to the most productive and enjoyable stay possible.
Britta Flinkfeldt Jansson, Mayor and Chair of The Executive Committee.

A 1:1 scale model of the Arctic Arc Continued from page 1
On the lake Ullak there will be a lot of activities during week 8, when the climate hall, called the Arctic Arc, will be a full-scale demo.
After a meeting recently, the Arctic Arc project has definitely turned a crucial point. – SPGA were the ones who promoted this project from the beginning, but as the project grew it became too wide-ranging for a single company or organization to handle, says Sture Lestander, SPGA, Swedish Proving Ground Association. The new project owner is SP, the Technical Research Institute of Sweden. Their ownership is elemental in coordinating the finances, avoiding conflicts of interest and securing the neutrality when it comes to the use of the Arc. AstaZero is the world’s first full-scale test environment for future road safety. Their test site is placed in the centre of the west Sweden, in Borås. SP is the owner of AstaZero, and it is their CEO, Pether Wallin, who is the new project leader. – In order to bring this to a satisfactory conclusion we need the issue of the Arc to be a national matter. We have to show that it is a way to consolidate Sweden’s leading position as a center for vehivle testing industry in the world. They already have a promise from the European Investment Bank but they still need funding from elsewhere. – We need international investment. And thats why the Activity Week 8 in February is so important for the project, says Pether Wallin, AstraZero.

A magical place with nice people tittle tattle – Iditarod is the World’s toughest sled-dog race and even though I’m used to competitive adventures, this is the toughest challenge I’ve ever taken on, says Lars Monsen. An 1800 km dog-sledge, normally finished in about nine days, from Anchorage to Nome in Alaska, through harsch nature, seems really tough and I can’t help but wonder why he is doing this? - I have always loved adventures both in this life and in my previous life, he says with a laugh.
Lars Monsen the norwegian adventurer & the musher Amund Kokkvoll, 19 years old.
Arjeplog is a magical place in many ways. A place where the impossible is actually possible and where anything can happen. An ordinary Monday night I’m at Leon’s restaurant with my family eating pizza. Then suddenly the famous Norwegian adventurer Lars Monsen walks into the restaurant. While he is eating we talk about the very special reason he’s in Arjeplog. – I’m going to Alaska for the Iditarod trail sled dog race and I’m here with my team ’KomplettFritid’ and my dogs training and preparing.
Monsen is the one in the Team who will compete in Alaska - and he intend to win the race. And finally my last question, why did they choose to train their dogs in Arjeplog? – Well, Arjeplog is the center of the world, isn’t it?! Lars answers laughing, other contributing causes is that it’s close to Norway, you have snow and ice and I know the owners of ’KomplettFritid’ and their empty warehouse was a perfect place to live in for us and all the dogs. They end the interview by praising their stay. – The conditions in Arjeplog have certainly been optimal, with the cold, the snow, the ice and all the nice and helpful people.
Part of the Team is also the young but experienced Norwegian musher Amund Kokkvoll. Together they’v been in Arjeplog for a couple of weeks. – We have done an eight mile trip back and forth to the village Aspnäs (along the Silver road) twice a day, Amund says. In January they will go to Alaska to live in a camp in the forest to prepare in every possible way so dogs and support-staff will be in as good a shape as possible on race day, the 5’th of March.

The word Iditarod comes from an old Alaskan word pronounced ‘Hi-dit-arod’. Wich means a distant place.
A recent survey reveals that the sexiest accent in Sweden is the one spoken in Gothenburg. When a dating site did the same survey, their members thought that people from the north of Sweden had the sexiest accent. But as northern Sweden is a big area, a local newspaper asked their readers to vote for the sexiest accent in Norrbotten. There was a tough battle between Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur, but in the end the competition was won by Pajala, and Arjeplog ended up in second place. However, rumor has it that Pajala somehow manipulated the vote by using a ’bot’ and thereby won. Because of that, we intend to stick to what we already know. That our accent is the finest and sexiest.
1 January 2016 a new law entered into force in Sweden, which means that if you drive an ATV or a snowmobile, you must wear a helmet. The authories are hoping that the new law will decrease the numbers of deadly accidents. The most common colour for cars in Sweden are Silver and grey and Volvo is still the most common brand of car. The new route at Arvidsjaur Airport is a result of Fly Lapland’s collaboration with the business sector in the area who took the initiative to improve the flights. – There has been a lot of confusion, but now all the uncertainties have been resolved. We have worked hard to improve the situation for the travellers, says Sören Roos, adviser for Fly Lapland. Nextjet is the airline that will continue to serve the route. – But they have done changes to improve service and travel, for instance they uses bigger jetplanes. Fly Lapland has also got a lot of ideas how to create an interest for the new route. – Cheap flights to Stockholm, extra focus on the summer season in the area, improve the way we communicate with our travellers, says Sören. 2
What does the Fox say?
She preserves the knowledge of net fishing
It can be really cold checking the nets.
People living in the North have fished and utilized nature’s bounty for their survival for thousands of years and fishing with nets is one of the oldest and most efficient ways. Today net fishing is a spare-time activity and a craft that is about to disappear, at least among younger people. Luckily there still is enthusiasts like Stina Ederlöv who ensures that the knowledge is preserved. She adores the outdoors, snowmobiling, hunting and in the autumn picking berries. She has also liked fishing since she was a young girl. Her father tought her how to use nets.
Stina Ederlöv had a successful catch this day. She shows us the bright, coarse-grained roe. She is working at Galtis in the winter and is also married to Håkan Ederlöv.
Photo: Therese Lestander.
Stina squeezes the fish so the roe end up in a bowl.
– This winter I decided to fish on my own to get some roe. Fish roe is a local delicacy common for Christmas and also quite expensive - but that’s not why I’m doing it. I really enjoy checking the nets. It’s fun and peceful. This day her catch is successful and there are thirty or so whitefish in the nets that gives five or six decilitre of bright orange coarse-grained roe. – Food supply doesnt get more organic and locally produced than this, she says with a laugh.
To eat the roe you have to remove the membrane, rinse thoroughly and salt in. And then mix it with fine chopped onion. Eat on a flatbread. Yummy!!

A red fox has resided in central Arjeplog for some time and the locals enjoy his visit. Even though foxes are common in this area, it is exciting to get the chance for a close-up look. Therese Lestander and her family lives at Hamngatan in Arjeplog. They have had the fox visiting on countless occasions. – If the fox is in the surrounding area and we starts to call him, he comes, says Therese. Foxes will come closer to a house if there are food sources and then they can become quite bold. – Yes, the little fellow has started to poo on our entrance, but I read about it and learnt that is a territorial behaviour, she says. Therese has mixed feelings about giving him food. – But I was pleased a few days ago when I saw a hare running across our yard with the fox at it heels now I know he still got his hunting instincts - but I think he ended up ’empty-clawed’.
