An extraordinary driving experience The noise is deafening when he starts the engine and I’m glad that we’re wearing hearing protection. I am with Eric Gallardo in a Citroen DS3 WRC rally car. We are on the “Paul Ricard Track” on Lake Uddjaur. I am strapped in by the four point seatbelt and all I can hear is my heart beat over the muffled sound of the engine. It’s exciting but at the same time a little scary. But there was nothing to worry about. It was really, really fun inspite of Eric exceeding 200km/ hr on the straights, and I felt safe and secure. This car was built for the world rally team. It's based upon the Citroen DS3 road car and replaces the highly successful C4 WRC. It is built to the new
World Rally Car regulations. The engine has been specifically developed for this car and is powered by a turbo charged 1.6 litre engine, an exquisitly crafted four cylinder 1600CC direct injection engine. Eric tells me that the car was brought to Arjeplog- Lapland Ice Driving, for a weekend event. The running cost of the vehicle is about 1,500sek/km. As the track is 4km long, every lap costs about 6,000 sek. But on the other hand, the car has been driven by world famous Former French driver Sebastiean Loeb. As we rolled into the pits after finishing our two laps, it was a little disappointing that Sebastian Loeb wasn't there to greet us. But driving with Eric Gallardo was no less a memorable and extraordinary experience.

Hunting grouse in the mountains
Britta Flinkfeldt, Mayor and Chair of The Executive Committee. A season of automotive winter testing is intense. We in Arjeplog – the center of Swedish Lapland’s state-of-the-art test region – double our population, work hard to prepare all facilities and we are rewarded with the pulse and cosmopolitan feeling of a truly international destination. January was cold and provided the excellent conditions that makes Arjeplog the natural proving grounds for 65 percent of all vehicle and component testing in the north of Sweden. We strive to become even better at hosting your business and the upcoming flagship project is of course Arctic Arc – a 55.000 square meters indoor facility with a controlled environment for cold climate testing. When built, Arctic Arc will give us the opportunity to offer the sub-zero temperatures of the now four month’s long season all year around. Until then we have to accept that most of you say good-bye to us just as our mountainous archipelago starts to sparkle with spring-winter sun. Make sure to reserve a couple of days of spare time to share our arctic lifestyle of ice fishing, moose safari and snowmobiling. And remember, Arjeplog is a paradise during summers as well. You are most welcome to spend your vacation with us and to explore an Arjeplog that looks totally different than the Arjeplog you work in.
Johan Bissmark has a successful hunting day. For many people living in Arjeplog, hunting is the biggest recreational activity and a way of life. It's not just about food as it was in the past, but a great way to really experience Norrlands nature. One of the local hunting enthusiasts is Johan Bissmark, who has been interested all his life. "For me it's a lifestyle and what I enjoy the most. The best thing in the world for me already as a little boy, was to follow my dad or other family members to the forest", he says. Hunting is relaxing and pleasant for Johan. It gives you a wonderful nature experience, as well as an adrenalin kick and of course exercise, he says laughingly. He often hunts with family and friends. My brothers are just as interested so we often hunt together.
Thank you and welcome back! Britta Flinkfeldt, Mayor and Chair of The Executive Committee.
Frank Bissmark, Johans older brother. 2
A selfie, Johan Bissmark and the nice surroundings in Miekak
According to Johan, grouse hunting is one of the most enjoyable types of hunting. Other types require you to be quite and to sit still. But that's not the case with grouse hunting, he says. You walk around searching different areas and can be several hunters together. You don't have to be totally quite as long as you keep it to a whisper. Arjeplog is seen as a hunters paradise when it comes to grouse hunting. It's not hard to understand why, he says. Apart from the beautiful landscape and the wonderful nature experience, there's also a good chance of going home with a bundle of grouse, he concludes. Photo: Johan Bissmark.
More than a hotel
This year Hotel Lyktan is celebrating their 30 years anniversary. The hotel in central Arjeplog is built in 1986 and is so much more than a hotel - a place for meetings, conferences, a restaurant, youth center in weekends and a place were people come and socialize, drinking a cup of coffee. We are talking with Rebecca St책lnacke and Javid Amini, they are cleaning the rooms at the hotel. Javid has an employment for seven months and Rebecca is working extra during the test season - as she has done every year since she was a teenager. 'This is my second
home and I really like it here. If I'm not here working I start to miss it, she says. I think I could even work for free, but dont tell anyone, she whispers with a laugh. (Editors note: David Holmner, one of the owners of Lyktan Hotel, is Rebeccas father) They are glad to be in the cleaning group. 'Yes, we wants to do the cleaning. We have the most fun. Joking, listening to music whilst cleaning. Wearing comfortable clothes instead of fancy ones' they say. 3500 guests connected to the vehicle test industry have slept in their beds this season. All these beds have been embedded by Rebecca and Javid and their two other colleagues in the cleaning group. 'Since I started
Javid Amini and Rebecca St책lnacke, cleaning the rooms at Hotel Lyktan to clean rooms I have become aware of the person behind the cleaning. When I stay at a hotel I usually take off the bedclothes and picks up after me. I know how glad I become when guests do that for me. It's a nice gesture', says Rebecca.
Ice fishing is fun and exciting "Oh, my, what could I ever teach a local from Alaska about ice fishing", was Pernilla Lestander's first thought, when her company A-event where going on a fishing trip with a group of tourists. The man from Alaska could fish, but still did enjoy the trip. In another group it was people from Hawaii visiting Arjeplog. "But they had never tried ice fishing before", Pernilla laughs. During winter ice fishing is a popular activity amongst locals. "It's exciting and relaxing at the same time", Pernilla explains. A-event offers fishing as an activity for testers and tourists coming to Arjeplog. They provide warm lunch, the fishing gear and the knowledge - how and where to get fish. "We can also offer groups to experience net fishing which has been appreciated".
The huts at Skeppsholmen.
A-event can offer fishing trips, both ice fishing and net fishing. Pernilla Lestander, A-event. At the Isle 'Skeppsholmen' close to Hornavan Hotel, A-event has a hut. "It's for renting. A very cozy hut where we can have activities of our own or rent it out for parties and meetings", she says. For next season they are planning for more exclusive fishing trips. " We want to offer ice fishing on the lake Hornavan, fishing char. It's a unique and special experience we think would be appreciated", she concludes. 3

This week’s local - Anita Gebhard, 34, CEO, Lapland Lodge Family: My son, he is 8 years old. Home: I live in Arvidsjaur. I was born in Karlsruhe in southern Germany and moved to Arvidsjaur in 2004. At first I came to Arvidsjaur in winter for driving snow mobile on weekends. We really liked it here and after a while we bought a house. Today that house is our hotel Lapland Lodge. We built our company from scratch, and today we have 6 employees plus a couple of seasonally employed. We have 18 rooms, 44 beds and 55 snow mobiles. Most of our guests are people who like to drive snow mobiles and they keep coming back season after season. What do you like best with your job: When our customers are having a good time, appreciates the little things and leaves with a big smile, happy and satisfied with their stay. That’s the very best salary I can get for my efforts. Favourite food: Everything that swims or live in water...hm, except for salmon. I like it too but we have salmon buffet at the Lodge
every Friday during the test season, and in the end of the season - like now - I am pretty sick and tired of salmon.
What is important in life: That my loved ones and I are healthy, have a good life and have the opportunities to realize our dreams.
Spare time activities: I have no spare time, I am always working, she says with a laugh. But we have periods that are calmer, for instance during spring time and then I like to travel. I prefer vacations where it’s warm and sunny. I’ve been to Florida a couple of times, it’s nice. One day I would also like to go to the Maldives.
Do you have a special skill: I’m good at technical stuff, if there is a problem with the heating system, ventilation or the computers and TV’s I take care of it. I’ve learned a lot from my father but running a hotel also forced me to learn a lot of these things.
Present car and your dream car: I have an Audi A4, 3,0 from 2011. And yes, I have a dream car! A black Porsche Cabriolet, 911. Maybe not a suitable dream car when living in Arvidsjaur, but this is a dream – so why not? The one place that you enjoy the most: Driving snow mobile on a sunny day, to the mountains Akkavare or Akkanålke. Sitting by a fire on a reindeer skin getting tanned - she says with a happy sigh.

If you could choose a super power: The super power to make sure that all my loved ones and I have health and happiness all our lives and then in the end, we would all die together at the same time. Tell us something about you that you don’t think people know: I am good at baking, cakes and pastries. Ones I made a raspberry and chocolate mascarpone cake and that evening I got three proposals from three different men, all of them saying that my cake was worth marrying for. What could you improve about yourself: I would like to be more ambitious. I’m not the kind of person who always wants to be first and best, she says and I sometimes wonder where I would be if I had been more ambitious. Editors note: Anita moved to Sweden and learned Swedish quickly. She and her ex-husband run a well-functioning company which they started from scratch in a new country and she also has a family to look after. She doesn’t strikes us as person without ambitions. On the contrary, she has accomplished a lot in her life.

• Moose Safari in the village of Jutis had a visit from a group of tour guides. An ordinary group of adults having a nice time, doing the Moose Safari, ice fishing and cooking over an open fire. As the day progressed they became more and more relaxed, playing and joking, making snow angels. – When they left in the afternoon, the manager was laughing, telling us that she came with a group of tour guides and left with a bunch of five year olds, says Ulf & Lars Westerlund, Moose Safari.
This is the place where the company Sis wants to build the new hotel. • It’s the company Sis - Stenbergs in Slagnäs, that wants to build the new hotel at Öberget, close to Silverhatten although the building permission is applicated for by another company. Sis recently got a ’no’ from ’Tillväxtverket’ (The Growth boarder) in their application for investment to a new Hotel. And thats why they withdraw their application. Press reports have alleged that this is merely a formality and that Sis hasn’t given up. Their plan is to redo their application for investment, with sharpened arguements, meaning that the Vehicle testing industry is important to Arjeplog aswell as a constantly expanding industry. The lack of accommodation has to be solved, or it might be a risk that the industry has to seek business elsewhere.

The world’s toughest dog sledge race Around these days the adventurer Lars Monsen , which we wrote about in the first issue of Xpress Arjeplog, is expected to cross the finishing line together with his four-legged heroes after participating in the world's toughest dog sledge race, Iditarod. He started the race on the 5th of March, and even if he cannot cross the line as the winner anymore, he still has done a good race. The last known position he had was 36th.

• The demonstration and testing period for the full scale climate hall ”Arctic Arc” on Lake Ullak has concluded. The purpose of the demonstartion was to get a
sense of it’s size and proportion, to guage interest and to determine whether or not the project is on the right track. The feedback is positive and everything is on the right track according to Sture Lestander (SPGA). There are of course still a 5

few problems to be resolved, but the layout and shape have been a success. Feedback and suggestions will now be evaluated in order to take the next step. A significant and pressing concern which needs to be resolved right now, is financing of the project.
