Code Red Alarm
Photo: Ingo Marklund
Code Red, refers to a plan of action developed by industry in cooperation with both road and air ambulance services. Companies contact each other in a predetermined order (chain of command) to inform all parties of an accident and that all testing activities on roads, land tracks or ice should be terminated to reduce risks. A major traffic accident this week between Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur, was the reason for the first time that a ‘Code Red’ plan of action with test companies was initiated. It proved a successful test although certain ambiguities emerged, which needed clarification. It was uncertain which parameters would lead to an alert, who was responsible for declaring that the danger was over and whose
responsibility it was to ensure that the end of the Code Red situation was notified and passed down the communication chain. Despite some uncertainties the most important and gratifying conclusion was the fact that the plan worked really well. Every company in the chain got their phonecall and could call off all test operations until the ambulances were back in Arjeplog- just as it was intended.

The smallest knife in the world? Sven Göran Fransson, or Swillo as everyone calls him, is a well known and colourful character in Arjeplog. Unique is commonly used to describe his personality. Many locals of all ages have had him as their driving instructor, during the time he operated the local driving school. But this is all a little matter of fact. What we really want to tell you about is his fantastic knife collection. It is much like its owner, unique in so many ways. The collection consists of knives made predominantly by locals. It began twenty-five years ago with two and has grown to the point where his love of knives could be considered somewhat of an obsession. Swillo admits however, that there is one rule which he sticks to religiously when adding to his collection. He must be aquainted with the maker. – It is of no interest to him otherwise. The collections jewel is a knife so small, that it is arguably the smallest knife in the world. It is a real knife with a metal blade, a reindeer horn handel and a leather sheath.
He has a knife in his collection which is about the size of a breadcrumb, which is about the size of a grain of rice.
We have a Swedish proverb which literally translates to, `having a thumb in the middle of your hand`. It equates to the English expression, `to be all thumbs`, which describes a person lacking in the practical skills or dexterity required for a certain task. - You need to be especially careful. It would be easy for such a small treasure to be swept away with the bread crumbs. When asked if he has ever made knives himself, he simply laughs out loud.
Sven-Göran ’Swillo’ Fransson has about sixty knives in his knife collection and the majority are made by people from Arjeplog. – NO! I am no craftsman. I am all thumbs and am also blessed with two left feet so practical skills in knife making are non existant.
Bucket list Arjeplog!
Magical Light But just as unforgettable is the midnightsun during summer. The magical nights in the period from early June to mid-July when the sun never sets. It is hard to sleep because the body respond to the fact that it is no longer dark when to sleep. An everyone is alert and full of energy with a longing to be out all night in a boat, fishing, walking in the mountains or hanging out with friends close to an open fire - instead of sleeping.
In this area the winter extends of more than half the year, it is a special period in a special landscape and the light is magical. The nice wintersun with its beatuful colours and the northern lights. And when the shine of the moon reflects towards the snow and illuminated the entire forest making it bright, almost as in the day. It is an unforgotable experience.

When an animal accident has occured The Hunters Association of Arjeplog are concerned about the large number of moose which are killed in traffic every year. 150 moose were killed in the Arjeplog area between 2010 and 2015, with 90 killed along the Silver Road. The association is also concerned over a lack of education which exists about legal obligations which apply when an accident has occurred. The most important thing to remember when you collide with a deer, reindeer, moose or protected animal in Sweden is to call the police on 112, to inform them of the accident. The vice president of the hunters association in Arjeplog Dan Marklund says that you must also mark the place of the accident to ensure that prolonged suffering is avoided, in the event of a search when an animal has been injured and fled the scene of
Dan Marklund According to Swedish Fauna regulations: bear, wolf, wolverine, lynx, deer, moose, otter, and eagles are all protected species and accidents must by law be reported. the acciden. The driver involved calls the police who in turn notifies the association that a search for an injured animal is necessary. There are 15 to 20 hunters qualified and available to conduct these searches. 3
– To injure or kill an animal with a vehicle and subsequently leave the place of the accident is considered a hit-and-run, an offence which could result in a very expensive fine says Dan Marklund.

I.M.Tattooing
This week’s local Family: I live with my furry little family. My spouse Guido Van den Berg that origins from Holland, his dog Dapper, my cat Marley and four rats and a rabbit. Home: My home is in Jutis, also called Moosevillage, where I grew up and never left. This is my quiet paradise.
If you could choose a super power, what would that be: Be able to communicate with animals. After all, my Dream was to become a veterinarian. What’s important in life: In my Life animals are the most important, nature and animals. And of course family.
Company: At age 20 I started my own Company. I.M.Tattooing.
Do you have a motto, or philosophy of life: I am not really sure, I do try to stay positive. Being angry and worried takes so much energy so I try to avoid that as much as possible. Things will work out in the end.
What about your job: I work as a tattooist, at this moment I have two studios. My original studio is in Jutis where I live and do my main work. And just recently I got a second location in Arvidsjaur, that I share with a hairdresser. There you can find me at Hair4you.
Spare time activities: Even though I draw a lot for my work, I love to draw in my spare time aswell, otherwise I do Everything I can get my hands on that involves handcrafting. That includes painting, carving (wood, antlers etc) sculpturing and knitting.
Favourite food: That must be tacos! I love to make too much so I can eat leftovers for many days.
What is good in Arjeplog: The Beautiful nature, little amount of people. Relatively close to everything, for my standards.
Favourite dessert: We don´t really eat desserts, but if I have to choose one it´s some kind of custard puddings with berry sauce that you can find in Holland.
The one thing you most enjoy doing: Hanging out with my old Little Jack Russel terrier called Tuva.
4
The one place you most enjoy being: In Jutis, just being able to go everywhere when I want to. There are so many nice places here in the village and around that I can not pick out one specific one. Tell us something about yourself that you don’t think people know: I am extremely good at Mariocart! Haha! No joke aside, well that´s quite a tricky one. I do not get to Cook so often for other people so I guess they do not know that I am a splendid chef! Especially good with moosemeat. A trip that you would like to do: I want to take a trip to a warm exotic country, do not have a specific one in mind. As long as it´s warm, has a jungle and a crazy amount of different animals. Is there something you are really afraid of: I am incredible scared of centipedes. They are just too freaky. What’s the best thing you learned from your parents: My dad is an old hunter so he has taught me a lot about animals and nature, and now I am teaching him new things. My mom is a very gentle and sweet woman, so she learned me to be kind to others and Always try to help.
A never ending job
The vehicle test industry in Arjeplog is a network where every little component is of importance. One such piece is the company ʻDikks tvättʼ (Dikks laundry) which provides twelve hotels and private customers with clean linen during the winter test season. We do all the washing for permanent businesses within the municipality of Arjeplog, nursing homes, as well as the extra work generated by the test industry. It is therefore, an extremely hectic period for us, says company owner Dick Karlberg. The machines work flat out seven days a week to get the jobb done, while manned by
dick himself, his parents and two employees. – I think we wash linnen from approximately 1500 beds every week during the peak of the season, he tells us. Dick has owned his company for about ten years. He worked as a lumberjack prior to that. Running a laundry is a never ending job, much like the logging industry. Trees regenerate as does dirty linnen. – Every day becomes a personal challenge, much like with tree logging. Once I counted the trees I felled, now I count bed sets ironed per day. Most items are washed, with only a small percentage being dry cleaned. We have
tittle tattle The last few weeks has been cold with temperatures between minus 30 and 40 degrees. Last week the ski resort Galtis reported of large temperature differences, the thermometer at the foot of the ski slope showed minus 35, and on top of the mountain it was minus 5. A difference of 30 degrees. (Source: Galtis AB)
2/3 of the population of Arjeplog live in villages outside the main town and 27 percent of elementary school students in Arjeplog travel by bus to school. (arjeplogskommun.se)
ofcourse the advantage of industrial sized machines and commercial quality detergents. Dick enjoys being self-employed and finds that the best part of the job is meeting lots of new people as well as his regular clients on a daily basis. If he could wish for anything, he would like to have a more even distribution of work throughout the year. He also readily admits that he constantly longs for the calmer summer months during the bussiest days. – The test industry is however, of great importance. Neither my company, nor many others, could operate on a year round basis without our multinational clients. Arjeplog is simply too small.
