New and better aircraft There has been a lot of uncertainty around the flights between Arvidsjaur and Stockholm, both on the operator that would fly the route and the type of aircraft that would be used. A permanent solution eventually became a contract with ’ Nextjet ’ , the company who previously operated the route. The line is now served by a completely different type of aircraft, a Fokker F100, a jet-propelled, twin-engine passenger plane. So far so good. The airport staff has received a lot of positive feedback from its passengers that were especially pleased that there is no longer an extra stop in Lycksele, which means the flight time is reduced by one hour. - Many also think that the new jet is less noisy and that the comfort has improved, says Åsa Lidström , Arvidsjaur Airport . Availability has improved aswell as the flight now land at Arlanda’s Terminal four. - It is especially appreciated by those who have a connecting flight, says Åsa Lidström. The airline Flylapland, responsible for traf-

fic on the route, is pleased with the reactions they have received from their travelers. -The Staff at the Airport has been involved from the start and it is partially their credit that travelers are satisfied. Moreover, we see the value of the line for the region and try to provide the best possible conditions, says Sören Roos, consultant for Flylapland. The bigger size of the plane has increased loading capacity and better baggage handling than before. - A large part of our airline customers have connections to the automotive testing industry in the area, and often have important and sensitive baggage that they need to carry out their work. Nowadays we have much less problems with the handling of luggage, which feels extremely positive, concludes Sören.

An interesteing piece of motoring history

Bengt’s Sputnik has a Sachs two -stroke - 191 cc and 10 horsepower motorcycle engine with a 4- speed transmission. The engine used among others in the German three-wheeled mini car Messerschmitt. To go into reverse, the engine would have to be restarted and run backwards. A type of reverse gear that is considered a precursor to the electric reverse on a Skidoo snowmobile, In further developed form this system is used even today . There were many motor enthusiasts that were inspired by technological developments after The Secound World War. This was especially so for the military vehicles which ran on tracks rather than wheels, enabling them to move easily over rugged terrain. With this inspiration in mind, enthusiasts tried to make their own snow vehicles. Three different models of snowmobiles were designed and manufactured in Arjeplog between the late 50’s and early 70’s. One of these models was designed and constructed by Bengt Ederlöv, who has been seriously interested in motors all his life. An interest he shared with his father Gustav.

He spent a lot of his spare time at home in the garage with him. – We jokingly used to call it Ederlövs

Labaratory for increased speed, he says.

Together they built a snowmobile prototype. The Russians had recently launched their first spacecraft and it was only natural that Bengt and his father should also name their invention Sputnik, symbolic of fast moving technical developments worldwide. Their Sputnik was in reality the continuing development of a machine that had previously been built in Slagnäs. – That’s how it happened then. We looked at what others had done and tried to improve on it. While the race was on to develop something better, we didn’t see each other as competitors. We helped each other instead and gladly accepted that there was

Back then you couldn’t buy engine and spare parts as today, we had to use things we already had at home, like the gas tank, it’s an old gas tank from a motorbike I had and my Sputnik has a lot of ordinary plumbing pipes in it.

always room for improvement. The final vehicle they built ended up in a barn where it stood abandoned for 35 years. That was until last summer when Bengt decided to retrieve it from its exile. – And it started straight away, against all This development also resulted in a new company, called ’Arjeplogs snowmachinery’ founded by the two brothers David and Olle Sundström The company manufactured about 35 machines until the late 1960 ’s. It may also be interesting to know that David is one of the founders of the company Icemakers and is Lars Sundström’s father. 2

odds, he says with huge grin. Bengt concludes by saying that if anyone is interested in looking at Sputnik or even taking a ride, they are most welcome. He will proudly show off his treasure.

A famous market in Jokkmokk This weekend it’s market in the city of Jokkmokk. A winter market held every year, from Thursday to Sunday, the first weekend in February. It has been a populair meeting place for people from near and far for the last four hundred years. Besides the sami culture, that stands in focus, they also have a theme each year, and this year it’s ‘Midwinter at the Arctic Circle’. Visiting the market in Jokkmokk is a memorable experience. A throng of people, where many are dressed in traditional Sámi clothing. There is the big market, with vendors and craftsmen from all corners of the nordic region that sell locally produced food, sweets, handicraft, clothes and sami handicrafts. Besides that there is a lot of other

activities going on like lectures, dance evenings, art exhibitions, joik concerts and so on. Jokkmokk has about 3,000 inhabitants and in a normal year there is between 3

35,000 to 45,000 visitors during the three days of market. In extreme cold it is considerably less. (You can reach Jokkmokk by car, it’s about 200 km, a nearly three hour drive)

Arjeplog is a welcoming municipality

Joao Carreiro and Andreas Klenke, on the ice at Rapatjärn.

A nice fishing trip There cannot be a better way to spend a free Sunday than outdoors. Make a nice trip to a beautiful place, and if the trip also includes some ice fishing on a reindeer skin, an open fire, grilled sausages, coffee and nice company. Then its no longer any doubt that Andreas Klenke and Joao Carreiro together with a couple of other cartesters dis choose the right place to be.

Participants from compounds, companies, the church, school and employees in the commune and the Police - have had a meeting to discuss what can be done for the refugees coming to Arjeplog. Beacuse of the troubled situation in the world Arjeplog has lately welcomed a lot of refugees. A meeting has been held under the auspices of the municipality of Arjeplog, with the aim of getting an overview of what is done in the community regarding to the refugee operations.

A fishing trip to Rapatjärn, a place a couple of kilometres outside the central of Arjeplog. – It’s a great day for fishing, I just wish the sun had the courtesy to show herself, said Klenke. – I’ve never tried peek fishing before, it was a new experience, said Carreiro. They both work in the marketing department in Stuttgart, responsible for the customers event at Bosch. It is Klenkes first time in Arjeplog. He heard about the allure of driving snowmobile and that was on his bucket list for his sunday off. – But it couldn’t be arranged so we decided to do something else, and I am glad we went here. It has been a nice trip even though we didnt get any fish. Carreiro has been in Arjeplog before. – A couple of times, yes. I like it here. It is a very nice and relaxing location. The surrendings are amazing and the snow is beautiful and really white, not like we are used to in the city where it is always dirty. The fishing activity was arranged by a new company, called Happy North, an event company run by two couples, Sofia and Henrik Finnsson and Rut Georgsson and her partner David Svensson. (The Finnsson’s also run the company ’Rent a house’ and Rut Georgsson works as a manager at Simloc hotel) They recently went into business with the aim to arrange fun and memorable activities in Rapatjärn and the nice, little cottage there is.

To this meeting companies, compounds, parish of arjeplog, employees in the municipality, and other parties responsible for refugee support, were invited. – Its important that we get to know each other and each activities so we can increase our network and the opportunities to handle this matter in a good way, says Bo Häggroth, at the Development department. After the meeting all participants agreed that there is a lot going on already, but that more can be done, and a date for a new meeting was decided.

l Patrik E milsson, 24

This week’s loca

Family: A younger brother and my mum and dad in Värmland, and my dog Rocko. Home: I live in a village called Ånge in Arjeplog, where I rent a house with my friend Andreas. I was born on the Swedish island Gottland and moved to Forshaga in Värmland when I was six. Company: Granns Hardware & Sports Store. What about your job: I work outside in the lumberyard helping people with all timber requirements including decking, as well as insulation amongst other things. I really enjoy my job. It’s a great place to work if you want to get to know the locals, because everyone ends up at Granns sooner or later, he laughs. Favourite food: I really long for my fathers fried belly pork with onion sauce and boiled potatoes. I do know how to make the dish myself theoretically, but I fear I will be disappointed by my lack of skills, so I will just have to wait until we meet again. If you could choose a super power, what would that be: I really enjoy good food and have a fast metabolism so I need to eat regularly and often. Just imagine having the ability to conjur up food on the table instantly. What about Arjeplog: I worked as a truck driver in Pajala when I heard there were jobs Arjeplog. I secured a position as a test driver for Tjintook and moved to Arjeplog. I was fortunate enough to get my current job at Granns at the conclusion of the test season. I like it in Arjeplog, it’s big enough with everything I need just around the corner. Nobody is anonymous here, people know each other.

Granns

Spare time activities: Much of my spare time is spent playing with or exercising my dog Rocko. I am also greatly interested in owning and repairing cars. Old or unusual are my preference. I mostly buy cars that aren’t in running order which are cheaper. I will then search for parts, fix faults, and repair until they are in driving order again. Present car and your dream car: I own a lot of cars. I will not reveal how many, he says with a big smile. Among the more unique is my VAZ Lada Niva from 1987, a four wheel drive off-road car produced in Russia. I also have an Estonian registered BMW. It was wreck that I bought for 200 sek and have since repaired, and now use as an ice car. My dream car is a brand new dark red Mercedes Benz W123. I really want such a car. It would be something extraordinary. The one place that you enjoy the most: My dad and I used to have a little plastic boat with an outboard engine. Going out fishing and chugging around the lake in it, cleared my thoughts and cleansed the soul. Tell us something about yourself that you don’t think people know: My parents where drug addicts so I have lived in foster care. Do you have a dream: I had a dream to live in Norrbotten, and that dream was fulfilled when I moved to Arjeplog. Another dream of mine is to drive road trains in Australia. A road train has a normal prime mover but instead off towing one trailer, it pulls many. I like trucks and have a truck license so it would be wonderful experience working in the land down under. What have you learned from your parents: To avoid drugs and to be cautious with alcohol, and not to end up like them. I do drink alcohol occasionally but I try to choose 5

the time and place carefully. I think I have as much fun sober. Rocko the dog. What is important in life: Friends and family. Do you have someone you admire: Yes, my father who managed to quit drugs. He has become a teetotaler and does not even drink cider from the supermarket. He has always been there for me even though it has been stormy periodically. Do you have a philosophy of life: To treat people well and be helpful to others is my goal, and it will hopefully be returned if ever I in turn, need help and support. And finally, tell us about Rocko: I wanted a puppy and searched on the internet to find one. I found an ad about a dog that needed relocation because he lived with an addict who neglected him. I felt at once that I wanted no one else. At first he was very insecure and afraid of everything eg. men in caps, the dark, or being alone. Today he is doing well and has become a completely different dog. Granns Hardware store is awarded ’Company of the Year’ 2015 by the Association of Entrepreneurs in Arjeplog - Because of their wide range and high level of both service and expertise. The range is well adapted and prices reasonable. And the owner, Björn Sundqvist, showes great care about community development.

Family: Married to Gertrud, no children.

Home: I’m from Rüsselsheim, a city in the state of Hessen in Germany. It has about 65.000 inhabitants and it is a multicultural city. Opel is the hub of the city, and has always been since over 100 years. I live close to my work and it takes me ten minutes to ride my bicycle. The wine Riesling was first mentioned back in 1435 in Rüsselsheim, its a white grape variety of wine therefore we still have one wine yard despite that the wine is no longer produced in Rüsselsheim. Occupation: I’m an engineer at the vehicle dynamics department. What about your job: I like my job because it’s interesting and always different, we are often on the roads, testing our cars and not always in the office. It’s our responsibility to make the car drive developing for example tires, breaks, steering, chassi parts and dampers. We work directly on the product, the slightest change influence the car so our work gives immediate response. Favourite food: Pancakes, and I want them sweet. There is a special sort of pancakes from Austria, with raisins that I also like very much. Present car: Actually I’ve got three cars. A practical car, an Astra H, our everyday car. I have a Opel Speedster, an open car that I have for fun. Its like a go-cart, easy and neat to drive. And finally I’ve got an old car, I bought a couple of years ago. An Opel Kadett from 1971 which decelerate yourself. What is important in life: Its important to 7

have a job that you like. Of course there are good and bad days, but a large part of your life is spend at your place of work. And its nice that I actually can say that I enjoy what I’m doing, and always had. Your philosophy on life: We should not wait for tomorrow, live your life now. Spare time activities: Riding my bicycle, playing field hockey with friends. We own a house, and everyone with a house know how that works. It’s a never ending story, when you finished it all start from the beginning again. A trip that you would like to do: I can think of a lot of trips I would like to do. We are going on a nice trip this autumn, that we both are looking forward to. A two-day mini-cruise with the luxury liner Queen Elizabeth II. A trip from Southhampton to Hamburg. What is good in Arjeplog: I like it here, it is a small, quiet town and I like the peace here, no stress just a relaxed way. The one place that you enjoy the most: Home! Being surrounded to them and that I like and that makes me feel good - my wife, my workshop and other things I like. What’s the best thing that you learned from your parents: To handle money, I always knew how to spend my money. Do you have a dream: Not a dream, a wish - for me and my family to stay healthy. That’s the most important thing.
