It’s our houses you rent
Sandra Svensson and her girls outside the trailer. Except for the trailer they also have a ’spiketält’, a little cottage close to the trailer, a way of getting more space. When renting out their house as they do every year, the Svensson family live in their trailer. Having Kraja Camping as their temporary address. The family consists of Sandra, her husband Peder and their three daughters, Vilma, Nova and Freja. They all like living in their trailer, close together, even tough it can be a little bit narrow and chaos sometimes. – A lot of our friends also stay here with their familys so we visit each other, hanging out, drinking coffee in our long johns, feeling at home. It’s a really nice way of living, she says. The test industry needs a lot of accommodation for their engineers, and its good money renting out your house, thats why the Svenssons family is doing it. – Money that we use to finance improvement on our house and to enjoy the month of April in Västerfjäll, were we have our mountain cottage. A month that we spend together with the whole family, not working relaxing and being outdoors. It’s cozy , but can be a bit narrowed to stay like this because I love to do gymnastics, says five year old Nova Svensson, while doing a split. In the background her The girls also like living in the trailer, having mother Sandra, and her two sisters Vilma and Freja. their own bedroom, their toys and things they like. Continued on page 11

Andreas Karlberg at Kalle’s kiosk in Arjeplog. He has owned his kiosk for eight years and has noticed a dramatic change in both the suppliers and range of snus available. ’Snus’ or snuff as it states in the dictionary, is a Swedish product and illegall in most countries except Norway, Denmark, Canada and parts of the US. It is a ground, moist tobacco product which is placed in the mouth. In Sweden you must be 18 years of age to purchase it. The Swedish snus market has in recent years expanded, with constantly varying products, brands and flavours. Something which is quite noticeable at Kalle’s kiosk in Arjeplog. – When I first began I had one small fridge for snus and today I have six, says Andreas Karlberg the owner of Kalles kiosk. In spite of being a very Swedish product, more and more test drivers are joining the growing ranks of snus buyers. -It may be the increasing awareness of the hazards of smoking, but trends have certainly changed dramatically in the past two years. Our overseas guests and visitors are now lining up with our regular customers. They also recieves many questions about snus, also pointing to an increased awareness of and interest in the product than previously. - Some customers are of course loyal to their usual brands while others are interested in trying something new, as with all things. Suppliers are constantly developing new flavours and packaging designs to lure in new customers. Editors note: Snus contains nikotine which is addictive.

A delicious tradition style are baked all days and the nutella variety is baked on Fridays.
At the last count, ICA’s bake off had produced over 4,000 semlor since they began baking them in January. That’s nearly 1.5 buns per person making it the most popular pastery right now. Hannah Dahlberg is responsible for the bakery section and confirms that Shrove Tuesday’s count was a challenge but demand will continues for the whole of February.
Everyone wants their semla in a different way, someone will have a lot of whipped cream, others do not want cream at all, just a lot of almond paste others will eat it with hot milk. We ask Hanna to describe the perfect semla. – A large base, a moderate ammount of marzipan, whipped cream and icing sugar on top. I really like them and could eat at least one every day, year round, she says.
Work started at 3 am on Shrove Tuesday. 900 hundred were sold on that day alone. Baking of semlor began already in January and they will continue to be produced as long as customers ask for them, often into March or even April. – It’s a lot of work doing semlor but it’s compensated by the appreciation of the customers, says Hanna. The dough comes premixed in bulk and two types of semlor are baked. The traditional 3
Driving school as a way of increasing safety
Ongoing discussions about the risks
Do you see the truck?
Alberto Kury Owehlmeyer & Alexander Greenwood. Alberto kury Oehlmeyer looks happy, smiling ear to ear when he comes driving out of the handling circle at lake Ullak. Together with his colleague Alexander Greenwood he is a participant at ATM Driving school taking his Advance winter training. They think it's fun getting the chance to drive on ice, with cool cars, having fun but at the same time learning. The goal is to be a better driver, training to handle a car in different situations and learn about risks such as snow dust, slipperiness, road rules and the danger of moose and other wild animals. - Things that are everyday events when driving in this area, says Alexander. Alberto tells us that he has been in an accident back home acting all wrong and
after being a participant at a driving course at ATM ended up in a similar situation. – Then I reacted completely different, doing the right things, and it felt really good. Kim Königsson, from Arjeplog, is one out of five instructors at ATM Driving school. He says that he himself has become a better driver since he became an instructor. - I can handle the car in a much more effective and routined way and I drive more safely, slower and with another awareness of the risks. The purpose of the driving school is to increase safety on the test facilities and public roads. By developing skills and driving techniques, doing it in realistic situations under controlled conditions. But also learning how to use the safety systems as for example ABS and the traction control system properly. – We locals learn since childhood to deal with snow and ice and know that we have to be careful and that it requires a softer and more gentle stearing than driving on asphalt. Here on our tracks the testers kan both try and also learn this in a safe environment. And finally what have Alexander and Alberto, both application engineers at BOSCH, learnt during the day? – I’ve trained on my stearing technique, handling the weight shift in the vehicle to my benefit, says Alexander
Kim Königsson, instructor at ATM Driving school.
– Not to stear so fast, I know it but tend to forget it, so it’s good to practice getting it more automated. I also had problem with oversteering, now I'm trying to remain calm and don't do that, says Alberto. 4

The number of vehicles around Arjeplog during the test season increases by up to four times the average, which in turn increases the probability of accidents occurring. There have been several car accidents recently, causing concern for the locals. While the companies involved do take responsibility for activities on our roads, discussions are ongoing. Companies need to internally work on minimizing risks aswell as through cooperation, consultation and ongoing discussion with locals. – It is extremely important that all parties are informed about risks, says Lars Sundström at Icemakers. Michael Lindeman from Icemakers agrees but also wishes to emphasize the importance of ongoing education for all visitors. – All companies should make it mandatory for drivers to undergo a defensive cold climate driving program before being allowed to drive, or test drive cars on public roads, he says. Representatives of all companies that xpress arjeplog has spoken to claim that they do
For over 20 years the ATM Driving School has offered various kinds of driver training, mostly for test drivers and test engineers, which we know has had a positive impact, helping to increase safety on the test facilities and public roads. During the training, our instructors will provide, and develop your skills and driving techniques in realistic situations under controlled conditions.
educate and inform their drivers of the extra risks associated with driving on snow and ice. There will however, always be drivers who ignore the risks or simply do not have the ability to comprehend the seriousness of their behaviour. Alf Sundström from Cartest is adament that all information about conditions, potential risks, and rules must readily be available. – Several companies have in the past cooperated and produced an information brochure about driving conditions in arctic conditions. Perhaps t's time to update with a new publication, with a focus on the dangers associated with driving in snow dust. Everyone agrees with the importance of a common plan of response when a driver is observed displaying risky behaviour. Client companies should not accept drivers who do not adapt their driving style to local conditions. Strategies for dealing with this problem are obviously of high priority for everyone.
t a e S t o H e h T Christian Vay, 35 Team leader Knorr-Bremse Family: Married to Ursula, who works as an architect - and three cats.
it’s much closer to nature, and the driving experince is much closer to the road.
Home: I live in Reichenschwand close to Nürnberg, working in München. Nürnberg is famous for Christkindlesmarkt, Kaiser Burg and the Sankt Lorenz church. Even today you can find large houses still gaping, traces after World War II. A lot of the historic buildings were rebuild to it’s original appearance and if you don’t know that, it can be hard seeing. I like to live there, it’s big enough to get everything and small enough to find everything.
What’s important in life: To have close relations to your loved ones, my wife, my sister and my parents. To have a satisfying job and keep the balance between job and spare time.
Occupation: I am a team leader for the applications software development for trailers. For all to remember! • Adjust your speed according to the weather and conditions! • Snow dust are insidious and can be treacherous. • Do not overtake or pass other vehicles unless the road ahead and your vision is clear. • Try braking gently occassionally while driving, in order to test the surface grip of the road. • Take it easy and be calm. Be accepting of trucks and patient with slower vehicles on the road. • Courtessy, care, adherence to the law, and respect for others should take highest priority - we can work together to minimize or altogether avoid accidents.
What about your job: We work with a lot of different products and challenges. One day is not like the other. I have nice colleagues and the job never gets boring. Favourite desert: My wife should undoubtedly say tiramisu with strawberries. Describe yourself in three words: Open minded, team player, sometimes chaotic both at work and at home. But I always straighten everything out in the end. Present car and dream car: I like motorbikes and have no special car, it’s a Volkswagen Passat. My dreamcar is a Tesla, Model S, because of all the new technique. My motorbike is a Suzuki Bandit 1200, the thing I like most about it is the way it sound. The allure of running a motorbike is that 5
Your philosophy on life: Be happy for what you got, instead of missing what you don’t have. Makes life much easier and more satisfying. Spare time activities: Besides my motorbike I have less and less time for more than being a basketball referee, up to regional league. I’m out travelling every weekend from October until May. I used to play basketball in a team, but stopped when the level of referee raised. A trip that you would like to do: We likes to travel, and are talking about a road trip in the US. A nice trip we have already done that I can strongly recommend is to the Algonquin provincial park in Ontario Canada. It was like in that movie ’Dirty Dancing’, wodden cottages close to the lake, foggy in the morning. An extra ordinary place. What’s good in Arjeplog: It’s a nice small, city, well organized with friendly people. But I cant say if that’s typical Swedish or typical Arjeplog. What is the best thing you learned from your parents: It’s hard to say, because I’m not that kind of guy that copy, I will try to find my own way.

A groupie on the friend collective at Storgatan 49, in Arjeplog, includes Tony Westerlund and his partner Malin Blind, Conny Långdahl, Ken Långdahl in the middle with his partner Evelina Persson and in front, Ken’s and Evelinas dog Dolly. Photo:Private. But what are you doing when you run a company, a mecanical garage like Ken’s Allmek, in your house and can’t rent it out? Well, you can do as Ken Långdahl and his sambo Evelina Persson. They have their friends, that are renting out their houses and flats, to come and stay at their place. Living in a cosy friend collective. – It’s fun and really nice having our friends and one of Ken’s brothers in our house, eating dinners, hanging out. And when the season is over and they all move back home, our house becomes a little bit empty and silent for a while, says Ken and Evelina. 7
It may sound strange, letting strangers in one’s home but in Arjeplog it’s so common, it feels like a lifestyle. Everyones parents rented out when we were small and when we grew up and got families and houses of our own people continued renting out their homes. – We do it for the money, that we re-invest in our house. Buying a new refrigerator, washing machine or anything else that is broken or needs to be replaced. We also try to do something fun for the kids, with the extra money, says Malin Samuelsson and Jonas Westerlund, that at the moment live in a cottage in the village Jutis, 40 km from Arjeplog, with their five children. They have the advantage to have several places to stay when renting their house to the test industry, since their parents have cottages they can live in whilst. – Renting out also means a lot of work, with cleaning the house moving out, temporary housing, especially with all the kids. But we have compared it to what we get for it and decided that we are okay with all the extra work and inconvenience.
