From Your Lt. Governor! Hey Division 13! I can’t believe how fast this year’s gone by! It honestly feels like it was just a few weeks ago that I was standing on stage at LTC, being inducted into Lt. Governor. Sadly, the time has come for me to do as Jai, the Lt. Governor before me, did and relinquish my position. On a happier note, however, we have our new Lt. Governor Elect, Lovina John! I’m so excited for her and her plans for the division. I have a really good feeling about next year!! I want to thank you all for letting me do what I’ve done. Without all of you and the countless hours that you put into this organization, Division 13, wouldn’t be what it is today. I said it at our last divisional, and I’ll say it again. Thank you and I love every single one of you! In this newsletter, I’ll be talking about Leadership Training Conference, Awards, and Information about our next Divisional (with March of Dimes) Yours In Service, Lt. Governor Jeongseok (Daniel) Suh Division XIII New York District Key Club (845) 391- 6218 danielsuh.ltg@nydkc.org Address: 7 Massachusetts Dr. Newburgh, NY 12550

From Your Lt. Governor Elect! Hi Division 13! My name is Lovina John and I'm the new LTG elect!! I'm super excited to start as Lieutenant Governor and can't wait for an amazing year with you guys. Just a little about myself, I'm currently a junior at Minisink Valley High School and I'm in my second year as president of our Key Club. I'm upset I have to leave my position as president but can't wait for the joys that comes with being LTG. My main plan as LTG is to work on communication and getting our clubs closer. I would love to do more inter-club events so we can all get to know each other a little more. I've heard some amazing things about each club from Daniel and I can't wait to see it myself! I hope to meet a lot of you at LTC on March 18-20th in Albany! Once again can't wait to hopefully meet all of you and for an awesome year! GO DIVISION 13!!!

Children’s Miracle Network Right now there’s a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital working to save the lives of kids in your community. In fact, 62 children enter a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital for treatment every minute — that's one child every second. Some are battling cancer. Some are suffering from a traumatic injury. Others require constant care because they were born too early, or with a genetic disease. Regardless of why the kids are there, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals always have their doors open.

Elaine’s Story

I remember the day I joined Key Club. I didn’t think much of it and just saw it as an opportunity to obtain service hours for my college application. I was a ninth-grader overwhelmed by the amount of clubs and booths set up around the school. I didn’t know which club to sign up for. There were so many people throwing their flyers at me, urging me to join. I ended up joining a club that my brother was previously in because he really enjoyed the events. But that was just the beginning. When I went to Key Club’s first meeting of the year, I didn’t know what to expect. I wasn’t aware of the fact that I soon would make friends who really loved what I loved. I didn’t know I was going to fall in love with the club. I stood with the massive group of students, watching a group of older-looking students joking and smiling as they waited for the last of the crowd to pile in. When they started the meeting, I found out that they were our board members. Just by looking at them, I could tell they all got along well and loved working together. I immediately knew that was what I wanted. Event after event and meeting after meeting, I still had never been happier. I actually felt like I was making an impact on the community, which I didn’t know I was capable of doing. I was actually helping people, communities and organizations. I fell in love with service along with the club and the people in it. When the time came for new board members to be elected in March, I wanted to be even more involved with the tightly knit group of friends who truly had inspired me. So I signed up for the position of, class representative, and within the next few days I received an email with my interview time and questions to expect. As I looked at the list of times and people being interviewed, my stomach dropped. I never realized how competitive the process was going to be, and how hard it was going to be to stand out from 10 other kids.

January - 12

The interview flew by in a few minutes and I was relieved it was over. When I walked out that door, I was so confident I was going to get the position—but I didn’t. In the next few months, it became hard for me to volunteer. Losing my chance of being a part of something bigger made me lose all motivation. I stopped going to events, I started showing up to fewer meetings, and before I knew it, summer came and I hadn’t volunteered. Now that I look back, losing that position wasn’t that big of a deal. I had multiple chances to try again, but at the time, that position was more than just a position. To me, it was an opportunity to begin my journey to a board position and work my way up. I wanted to prove to myself that I could become someone my younger classmates could look up to. I shook myself out of it by the time school started. During sophomore year I was so determined to start fresh. I knew I wanted to get back into my groove and start being active in Key Club again. Months went by and March came once again. This time I tried for Spirit Chair and when I least expected it, I got the position. If it hadn’t been for Key Club, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. My journey from the bottom to where I am now has taught me so much. I learned how to be a leader, how far hard work and dedication takes you, and how important it is to keep trying. Don’t let rejection and obstacles get in your way. Of course, not getting the class representative position hit me hard, but I eventually got up and hit back even harder. I didn’t want my past to affect my future negatively, and you shouldn’t let it affect yours either. Regardless of the past, you should always keep going. I promise you, when you reflect and see how far you’ve come from the bottom, it will be the best feeling in the world.

Applebee’s Flapjacks Kiwanis is an international organization that was founded on January 21, 1915. Their massive community strives to make a difference in the world. Cardozo Key Club helped Bayside raise money for charity and donations by serving breakfast and holding a raffle at the end of the event. Applebee’s FlapJack was a fundraiser hosted by the Bayside Kiwanis on January 9, 2016 at an Applebee's in Bay Terrace. A total of 16 Key Club members attended the event to volunteer in the fundraiser. The Bayside Kiwanians also helped out with the fundraisers. Not only did we get to meet the Bayside Kiwanis for the first time, but also we had a great experience. The members learned how to serve and manage food properly in order to bring smiles to the customers faces. Many people came out to support our Kiwanis FlapJack Fundraiser, such as owners of the Bayside Milk Farm, Bourbon Street Queens, Thai's Asian Cuisine & Bar, and many more. The club came to the location before the start of the event. This allowed Bayside Kiwanians to assign us roles. The governor of Bayside Kiwanis told students to sell raffle tickets, check admission tickets, set up knives and forks, help serve food. An applebee’s employee gave us instructions on how their kitchen functions. The raffle tickets were used as entries for various different prizes. The prizes were tickets to Thai's Asian Cuisine & Bar, a 50/50 raffle, and a box of lottery tickets. The way the 50/50 raffle prize works, is that you have a chance to win 50 percent of the raffle tickets total revenue collected. Throughout the event, we learned how to work together in order to get tasks completed efficiently without upsetting the customers. After we finished serving everyone, we cleaned up the tables and brought the dishes back to the kitchen. There were chefs in the kitchen making pancakes and cooking bacon for the customers. In the end, applebee’s treated us with a nice breakfast after the event concluded. Overall this was one of the most memorable and successful events of 2016. - Brandon Chin, Benjamin N Cardozo
