Jerrol’s Opens its Doors June 21st, 1947!!!

My Small Part of the Jerrol’s Story I must have started working at Jerrols when I was around 13, that would have been 1978, some 35 years ago. I really don’t remember. I don’t think any of my three sisters can remember when they started either. It was just something that we did.

I do remember all the great people I worked with as a kid. Millie Engel, Lana Fairchild (Smith) Joy Potter, Steve Brumfield, Claudia Sikes and literally hundreds of other employees all took me under their wings and tried to help me when I was smart enough to listen.

Some things I did stand out from the others. Putting garbage cans under all the leaks in the old flat roof we had every time it rained. Putting tar on that same 5.000 sq foot roof each summer with a house broom when the temperature reached 90 degrees or more. Sweeping Mount St. Helens ash off the roof the week after the eruption in 1980.

Hmm, why is it I have so many roof memories, did dad ever let me work in the store……

I do remember tossing a smoke bomb from outside into the bathroom through the vent. That was a slightly less then brilliant idea. Not like Dad didn’t know I did it.

When I first started working at the store we had a full record selection, cigarettes, a pet department with a massive amount of aquariums that had to be maintained, remote control airplanes and cars, photography supplies including darkroom products, and even a small used car lot.

Winegars Homemade Ice Cream & Coffee

Ellensburg The Winegars story begins in 1948 when Truman and Phoebe Winegar started a dairy herd on their farm on the north (or country) side of 15th street in Ellensburg.

In the early 1960’s they opened Winegars Drive In Dairy that included a bottling plant and retail sales. I can remember the smell and sound of the glass bottles when mom would take me to get our milk. They had a small freezer with ice cream treats. Funny I would remember that!!!!

Gary Winegar, Truman’s son took over the dairy and in 1974 it was the third highest producing herd in Washington state. Gary’s daughter Richelle came back to the business in 1992 and added the homemade ice cream. In 1994 Richelle’s brother Kori joined the businesses bringing espresso.

1996 saw the Winegars open their first store at 7th & main. In 1997 the Winegars eliminated the dairy herd due to the increased pressure of Ellensburg’s growth around the family farm and focused all their efforts on the espresso and ice cream store. In 2007 they added their second store in Ellensburg at University Way and Alder. More of their history is at online athttp://www.winegars.us/history.asp

13 Years and Counting I was just 20 years old when I started working at Jerrol’s, that was 13 years ago. My sister Tanya Gorrie had been working at Jerrol’s for a couple of years and suggested that I bring in my resume. I did and got a call for an interview. She had told me not to be Jessica Bacon Business Help nervous; she was going to be one of Desk the people interviewing me. She thought that would help but to me it made it worse.

When I went in for my interview I was so nervous, and to top it off I was being interviewed in a tiny little office that was about 100°. I didn’t know if I could make it through the interview but I did and ended up getting the job. I first started as a night and weekend cashier. I did this for a couple of years and then moved up to a week day cashier and eventually into a buyer position which I have done now for the past 9 years.

Many changes have happened in the past 13 years both in my personal life and at Jerrol’s. I got married in 2002 to Frank Bacon, had my 1st son Jacob in 2003 and then my 2nd son Tyler in 2007. In that same time span I got to work with my sister for many years, along with my other co-workers that became good friends of mine. Recently my mom Patty even took on a part time job at Jerrol’s and I get the privilege of working with her too.

Working at Jerrol’s has been wonderful. I am grateful to have such a good job and be able to work with a member of my family and co-workers that are as close to me as family!
