WILDCAT WELCOME You’re probably almost all packed up & ready for life in the ‘Burg! Here are a couple phrases/words you’ll hear a lot around town: • • • •

• • •

“Eburg/ the ‘Burg” are just other names for Ellensburg. “Local” strictly means someone born & raised here “Wind” means gusts more than 35 MPH… a breeze does not mean windy! “People’s Pond” is what college students call Carey Lake– it is a popular place to hang on sunny days! “East & West Interchange” are exits 109 & 106 that take you into town “D– Street” really means “Wildcat Way.” “Upper County” refers to Cle-Elum/ Roslyn area If you’re from the west side of WA, “east side” no longer refers to Bellevue/Redmond. It’s now anything east of Snoqualmie Pass. Hope this helps when talking to locals and navigating around town!

You’re a busy student with a busy life, soon to be full of homework, exams and finals. Make sure you sell your textbooks back on YOUR time, whenever you want! You’ll find YEARROUND textbook buyback at Jerrol’s, so it fits into your schedule! If you have any to sell, just stop in at your convenience, and you can get a quote.

The Jerrol’s Story My name is Rolf Williams and I am the third generation owner and operator of Jerrol’s. I love what I do, and have never considered it a “job”. My role at Jerrol’s is to help our Team help YOU!! When not doing that I spend my time riding motorcycles, backcountry skiing or just being in the woods. I am married and have a daughter, Jordan, who lives in Williston, ND with her husband, Israel, and daughter, Rowan. My son, Gerik, lives at home with us and is on the autism spectrum. Jerrol’s was started as a soda fountain—think Dairy Queen on steroids—in 1947 by Don & Irene Williams, my grandparents. It was located in the corner of our existing parking lot right next to their house at the time. The first building was 300 sq feet and the sign from that store is the same one over our door to this day. Over the past 70 years we have learned to focus on YOU, not the things we sell. That has led us to sell may different things over the years, from used cars, birds, fish and snakes, vinyl records, photography supplies, textbooks, pantyhose, lipstick, and a ton of other items. In the end, we sell what you ask for. Our number one job is to make you happy. No This photo of the original Jerrol’s was taken in matter what 1948 from what is now University Way. you are looking for you can count on us to help. If we can’t help you directly, we can help you find someone who can. I am often asked about the name, Jerrol’s. It was created by Grandma Irene by combining the first 3 letters of her two sons, my dad Jerry, and Uncle Rolf: JER ROL and adding an apostrophe S for ownership. If you are interested in learning more about our history we do have a book, The Unfinished History of Jerrol’s. You will find it at TheBook.Jerrols.com. I look forward to welcoming you to Central and the Ellensburg community. -Rolf

Dorms & The Freshmen 15 Alright, you’ve probably heard it all by now. You’ve heard the horror stories of the dormmate that goes through your stu, ge ng locked out in the middle of the night, not being able to sleep at night etc. etc.

MEET YOUR JERROL’S TEAM (rev.) Here are a couple more team members you may have missed from your last newsle)er! Hey, I’m Abby! I’m a CWU alumni with a degree in Psych & minor in ASL. I lived in Portland for this past year, and decided city life wasn’t for me. I am so happy to be back in Ellensburg!

Hopefully your ďŹ rst !me in the dorms is a fun experience, so here are some !ps to help this go smoothly for you: ∗

Bring earplugs: people are loud, and walls are thin. If you need peace and quiet at night, it’s best to invest in a nice pair of earplugs or noise cancelling headphones. Bring plas c ip ops: community showers...enough said. Spongey ip ops aren’t easy to clean, so plas!c is be)er! Ask your RA: some!mes your RA is the closest thing you’ll have to parental advice; ask ques!ons because they probably have an answer. Set rules & expecta ons: do this right away, but a good rule of thumb is to respect each other’s personal space! Your roomie doesn’t have to be your best friend: most of the !me you guys will have dierent schedules. Get along, but don’t feel like you have to hang out all the !me. Don’t vent: if you need to unwind, talk to a parent. The best way to avoid drama is to not vent about one oor friend to another. Bring a lock box: refrain from bringing too many personal items, but if you’re worried about expensive ones, bring a box with a code!

Freshmen 15: You’ve heard all the jokes about it, but it is a real thing! You’re in charge of your diet for the ďŹ rst !me in your life, so be careful! Every once in awhile, buy an apple, a sub sandwich and maybe a salad. Maybe walk to the ice-cream shop instead of drive, and hit up the gym in the SURC (since it’s free for you). If you don’t like the SURC gym, you can get a membership to Any!me Fitness or “The Gymâ€? on main street. You’ll feel be)er taking a li)le care of yourself.

Hey I am Erin! I’m the Business Account Manager for Jerrol’s. I just bought my ďŹ rst house with my boyfriend in Ki tas, and I am a proud dog mom.

Parent’s Corner It’s almost time! Pretty soon your young adult is going to load up the car and move to Ellensburg! Hopefully you abided by our tips and your young adult has their parking pass ordered, quarters for laundry depending on their dorm, checked in with professors about textbooks, and is bringing some winter items. This time, it is important to talk about something on everyone's mind:

The WildďŹ res As you know, the Jolly Mountain ďŹ re and Norse Peak ďŹ re have left tens of thousands of acres burned, and the air quality has plummeted in Kittitas County, Yakima County and other surrounding areas. If your student has health conditions such as asthma that affects their breathing, it’s important to make sure you send an inhaler with them, and keep their prescription updated. In Ellensburg, prescriptions can be picked up at -Downtown Pharmacy -Safeway -Rite Aid -Fred Meyer You can even ask about getting prescription referrals from the student health center on campus! It’s best to get most of this taken care of before an emergency happens. Free air masks are available at the SURC. See you soon & stay healthy!

Welcome Postcards As a Royalty Rewards Member you should have received a Welcome postcard Did you notice the expiration date on the bottom of the postcard? If it’s not possible for you to use it right now because you are out of town, please hold onto it. You can use it when you move here! Most of our offers will come to you in the mail on postcards. You find them during your birthday month, when you earn a Rewards Certificate by spending $250 and other special offers. You will also find emails to remind you to take advantage of the offers. You should have received a Welcome email, and a reminder to come in and use it. If you didn’t receive an email, it could be one of two things: 1. You didn’t give us an email when you signed up. Emails are a great way to learn about spontaneous offers and events. 2. You gave us your CWU email. Our emails may be stuck in your “clutter” folder, which means you may not receive everything you’re offered. About your address: Your parents’ address is most often the most consistent way for you to receive your special offers and coupons. Just make sure they send them to you. To change or update any of your Membership information including email send us an email to Info@Jerrols.com. Please include your name and cell phone number to help us locate your Membership.
