A Million Reasons Why You Shouldn’t I wrote last month about heading off to Whitefish, Montana to go skiing at The Big Mountain. When we were first married, Michelle and I went there every year; just like my parents did when I was a kid. As Gerik got older, it became harder and harder to travel and spend nights away from home. So, sometime in the late 90’s, we stopped taking a winter vacation. I have so many great childhood memories of various ski vacations there: staying on the hill, riding up the chairlift with girls from the ski lessons I was in, getting lost, getting in trouble, watching our parents and relatives get in trouble... It was hard to give that up. I had been going there with family since my early elementary school years. Two years ago, I was floating the river with my Sister Elizabeth and her family during Rodeo and we started talking about skiing. We halfheartedly said we should go back to The Big Mountain that ski season. When I mentioned it to Michelle she was understandably gun shy at the thought. Gerik can be really loud, especially at night when neighbors and our own housemates are trying to sleep. Being in a different house and trying to sleep can also get complicated. And then there is the 7.5 hour trip to get there, and another back. So, last year we gave it a try and, for with his instructor providing the most part, everything went well. I Gerik skiing a little help from behind was able to ski with Mom, Michelle, my sister and her family. We started making memories again. This year was even better. We enrolled Gerik in adaptive ski lessons, which was pretty scary for us to think about. Their staff had never met Gerik and we were not sure they would know what to do. My brother-in-law, Craig, came with me to Gerik’s lessons to help out. At first it was a little rocky. His instructor wanted him to side step up the hill, stomp around on this skis and do the usual first ski Continued on Page 2

lesson stuff. That did not work at all. Gerik couldn’t understand the point of any of that and just sat down. After 5 minutes for trying that, the instructor realized Gerik is a man of action and needed to be in motion and figure it out on his own. They have this cool system of using an Edgie Wedgie, which is essentially a bungee cord that clamps onto the tips of the skis to keep them together. Then they clip a strap to each tip so they could help Gerik turn and keep his speed down. We all took a deep breath and pushed Gerik onto the magic carpet ride and up we all went, with us in front and back. He made it all the way to the top of the little beginners hill without falling and all four of us went skiing down the hill. After 4 runs on the small hill the instructor asked if we wanted to try the chairlift. I hadn’t asked Michelle about that but what the heck—we gave it a try. It went great except Gerik didn’t see any reason to get off the lift at the end and we sort of had a train wreck. After that we developed a system to help him get off the lift and we ended up spending 2 hours skiing the first day.

Core Values Make a Splash When we decided last month to write about our value of embracing diversity, we had no idea it would go “viral”. The support and comments online, as well as by email, hand written notes and people stopping in has been encouraging. Some have called us brave or courageous—we do not think that we are. We simply shared what we believe. Many people asked if there was a bumper sticker available to support the NOT in OUR KITTCO movement. You can now find them at Jerrol’s.

Uncle Craig, Gerik & Rolf on the chairlift

Gerik skied a second day for 2 hours on the chairlift and took a couple runs with his sister Jordan, Michelle and I right besides him. Amazing!! It just goes to show that you need to take a risk and give things a try even if you can think of a million reasons why you shouldn’t. P.S. I love all the message boards out there, it's such a fun look. So I decided to make my own! All you need is: A White Canvas (I used 14x18") Flat Balsa wood (3 pieces of 1/8x1/2) Square Balsa wood (3 pieces of 1/8x3/16) White paint Wood glue 2" vinyl letter stickers Transparencies (3-4 sheets)

Jeff received a certificate to recognize his accomplishment and gift cards to Jerrol’s and Winegar’s. We encourage you to submit your nominations and stories about amazing customer service you have received at www.KCCustomerService.com for the next Champion of Customer Service award.

Kittitas County Customer Service We need you to post stories about great service you receive here in Kittitas County and beyond. In May, there will be the Best in Customer Service Award Banquet, where the best of the monthly Customer Service Champions from the past year will be recognized and the posts from the past year will be made into a book.

1. Cut all your balsa wood to fit on your canvas. You will need 5 flat 14" pieces and 5 square 14" pieces. 2. Glue your square pieces to the middle of your flat pieces. (So if you looked at it from the end it would make a "T") Let dry according to the glue instructions. 3. Paint your balsa wood "T"s white. Let dry. 4. Glue your white balsa wood to your canvas. Glue one piece at the top of the canvas and one at the bottom. Evenly space the remaining 3 pieces between the top and bottom pieces. (Mine are approximately 4" apart, but not exactly because I'm allergic to measuring) Again let dry according to the glue instructions. 5. Next you need to cut your transparencies into 4x2.5" rectangles. (Because I didn't want to write on the transparency itself I drew lines on a piece of paper and used that as my guide while cutting. First I drew a line down the center, and then made lines going the other way every 2.3". Again mine are all approximate) 6. Put your letter stickers on your transparency rectangles. (I drew a line .5" from the bottom of another piece of paper and placed it under each transparency piece so I had a line to line up the bottom of each letter with) 7. Spell out your "very important message" on your board and enjoy. -Corrie Ihrke
