The following is a guest column written by my daughter, Jordan Lopez, during her flight back to Washington from North Dakota for Thanksgiving.

When I moved to Williston, North Dakota two years ago, I was expecting a frigid tundra with too many oil workers and not a lot else. But now that I’ve lived here for a while, I’ve learned that it’s definitely a frigid tundra and might as well be in the arctic circle in the wintertime, but it actually has a lot Buffalos roam the hills of North Dakota of redeeming qualities, too. It’s a small town, and somehow it managed to keep its small-town personality through the oil boom craziness. Everyone seems to know everyone else, and there’s still a real sense of community. There’s no more people living in tents in the parks and rvs in the Walmart parking lot, but I still see a fair amount of out of state license plates. I always like to meet people from Washington, and if they’re from around Ellensburg, of course I have to ask, “Have you heard of Jerrol’s?” There’s a little two screen movie theater, a bowling alley, a smattering of burger restaurants, and a cute main street complete with brick buildings and a tiny JC Penney. But the real entertainment is outside. There may not be forests and mountains here, but there are some beautiful rivers and lakes. Just watch out for the mosquitoes. They are relentless! And speaking of relentless, the winters here are brutal. Though, for some reason, we’ve been blessed with 2 nice winters in a row. Cross your fingers it stays like that! The first year I was here it got down to -60 with the wind chill one day. As they say here, uff-da that’s cold! Hunting and fishing are big here, along with ice fishing in the winter. I haven’t had a chance to try it yet, but hopefully this winter I will find an opportunity! Louis and Clark state park is one of my favorite places to go in the summer (even if I don’t actually go very often.) It includes the beautiful Lake Sakakawea and it’s a great place for a bbq on a Saturday with some wonderful views. The cliffs around the lake almost remind me of the Columbia. Continued on page 2

AED’s for Local Schools

Holiday Book Guide This year’s 2016 Holiday Book Catalog is tucked in with your newsletter. It is full of all kinds of ideas for you and those on your shopping list. All these books are on display in the store right now for you to check out.

Kimberly Mace of the Downtown Rotary Club, Tammi Lenz of the Ellensburg Christian School, Rolf of Jerrol’s & Bob Crowe from the Kittitas County Community Foundation present a check for an AED to Tammi.

Three local school districts received a total of 5 defibrillators from Jerrol’s with funding raised by an initiative lead by the new Downtown Rotary Club and helped by other county rotary clubs, the Kittitas County Community Foundation and several grants.

One tip you might try is to leave the catalog out during family gatherings and take notes on what books people find interesting. Easy way to get your holiday shopping done.!! _________________________________

The Holidays at Jerrol’s

Yes, we sell AED’s and we’re glad to provide them at cost to the schools along with onsite training for school staff. Valley View, Lincoln, Mount Stuart, Morgan, Ellensburg Christian School and Damman all received funding for these units. _________________________________

North Dakota—continued from page 1 I missed the craziness of the oil boom, but I’m glad of it. I heard some crazy stories before I moved over here, but I’ve never encountered anything crazy myself. It helps that I found a great workplace at a chiropractor’s office with some awesome people to work with. You might call it North Dakota nice. Unless you’re from Minnesota. In which case it’s really Minnesota nice. All in all, North Dakota has been a great place to start out, and even though I still can’t wait to move back to Washington, it’s nice to know that I’ve found a little place to call home in the meantime.

October Customer Service Champion Announced Matt Anderson, manager of the Holiday Inn Express, has been selected as the Customer Service Champion for the month of November. You can read the post about Matt at the website below or on the Kittitas County Customer Service Facebook page. Matt received gift cards to both Jerrol’s & Winegar’s as well as a certificate to recognize his accomplishment. This was the fifth month the award was given and we encourage you to submit your nominations and stories about amazing customer service you have received at www.KCCustomerService.com for the next Champion of Customer Service award.

Corrie’s Craft of the Month Shrinky Dinks Obviously my childhood was neglected, because this was the first time I've tried Shrinky Dinks. Ahhh, let me tell you, they are addicting. I even cleaned the door on my toaster oven so I could watch them "melt" (my family thanks you Shrinky Dinks) Supplies A pack of Shrinky Dinks (or 2-I couldn't stop) A hole punch Open jump rings (in jewelry-making section) Gold cord An inkjet printer Instructs 1. Print a picture on your Shrinky Dink sheet. DO NOT USE A LASER PRINTER, it will melt your Shrinky Dink and ruin your printer. I found that screen shots from my phone were a great size for the 5x7 sheets we sell at Jerrol's. I used pix of my family and pins from Pinterest. I avoided pix with a lot of black/dark colors because they tend to blur more than the lighter colors. 2. Cut out your pix. I also rounded out the corners, but you don't have to. 3. Punch out a hole in top. Use a regular size hole punch BEFORE you melt it. It shrinks down to the perfect size for ornaments.

Submit Your Nominations Online at www.KCCustomerService.com

Follow Nominations on the Facebook Page at-

Kittitas County Customer Service We need you to post stories about great service you receive here in Kittitas County and beyond. Every May, there will be the Best in Customer Service Award Banquet, where the best of the monthly Customer Service Champions from the past year will be recognized and the posts from the past year will be made into a book.

4. Shrink it in oven (or toaster oven) using package instructions. WARNING: this part is addicting. 5. Put a jump ring into hole at the top. A set of pliers is helpful for this step. 6. Cut some gold chord and run it through the jump ring. Tie a knot at the end and you're done!! I hope you have as much fun as I did making these and have a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS! -Corrie Ihrke You can reach Corrie at Corrie@Jerrols.com
