The following is a guest column written by my daughter, Jordan Lopez, during her flight back to Washington from North Dakota for Thanksgiving.
When I moved to Williston, North Dakota two years ago, I was expecting a frigid tundra with too many oil workers and not a lot else. But now that I’ve lived here for a while, I’ve learned that it’s definitely a frigid tundra and might as well be in the arctic circle in the wintertime, but it actually has a lot Buffalos roam the hills of North Dakota of redeeming qualities, too. It’s a small town, and somehow it managed to keep its small-town personality through the oil boom craziness. Everyone seems to know everyone else, and there’s still a real sense of community. There’s no more people living in tents in the parks and rvs in the Walmart parking lot, but I still see a fair amount of out of state license plates. I always like to meet people from Washington, and if they’re from around Ellensburg, of course I have to ask, “Have you heard of Jerrol’s?” There’s a little two screen movie theater, a bowling alley, a smattering of burger restaurants, and a cute main street complete with brick buildings and a tiny JC Penney. But the real entertainment is outside. There may not be forests and mountains here, but there are some beautiful rivers and lakes. Just watch out for the mosquitoes. They are relentless! And speaking of relentless, the winters here are brutal. Though, for some reason, we’ve been blessed with 2 nice winters in a row. Cross your fingers it stays like that! The first year I was here it got down to -60 with the wind chill one day. As they say here, uff-da that’s cold! Hunting and fishing are big here, along with ice fishing in the winter. I haven’t had a chance to try it yet, but hopefully this winter I will find an opportunity! Louis and Clark state park is one of my favorite places to go in the summer (even if I don’t actually go very often.) It includes the beautiful Lake Sakakawea and it’s a great place for a bbq on a Saturday with some wonderful views. The cliffs around the lake almost remind me of the Columbia. Continued on page 2
