I grew up in a family business. By the time I started working here, Jerrol’s had been around for 30 plus years. I never thought of Jerrol’s as a privilege. I was taught by my parents that owning a business is a responsibility. I believe how I conduct myself and run Jerrol’s is a direct reflection on my grandparents, Don & Irene Williams, who started Jerrol’s in their front yard in 1947. That is where the stop sign is now in the corner of our East parking lot at C St & University Way. My conduct also represents my respect for my parents, Jerry and Annette, and all the people who have worked and patronized Jerrol’s. They created and supported the legacy with which I have been entrusted. This line of thought has served me well. It makes me think through decisions and makes the desire to have world class customer service ingrained in every fiber of my body. How could we do anything less? When I think of how hard everyone has worked to create Jerrol’s and the sacrifices they made to grow this business that has spanned three generations - and 67 years - I am grateful and humble. One way I show my respect to our legacy was by co-writing the book on our history with my dad and grandfather. The second edition will be out by our anniversary on Saturday June 19th. It contains almost fifty additional past team members and two new stories. The first is about the time I tossed a smoke bomb through the bathroom vent into the store. It happened at the same time Dad was walking past with a management team from Nebraska Book Company who owned Jerrol’s at the time. The other is about how Jean Skibeness, Dad and a group of friends got caught helping themselves to a late night snack when the store was a soda fountain. Book Reviews This month is Father’s Day, or, Father’s Day is this month, depending on your grammatical e r ksto o preferences. In honor of this I’ve o B put together a smattering of ideas for dads who are more interested in Mythbusters than muscle cars, comics instead of combines. This month we honor the indoor dad and all that he does for his children.

Dad’s Book of Awesome Science Experiments $18.99 - by Mike Adamick This is a wonderful book full of experiments for all ages. Each experiment is broken down into steps so you can gather all your supplies and dive in. The best part though is that author Mike Adamick clearly lays out which parts of the experiment can be handed over to your junior scientist to do and which parts you will need to do together. There are also plenty of discussion prompts for each experiment. Explanations for the eternal questions “why” and “how” are given in clear language as well as variations for further experimentation.

Made by Dad 67 Blueprints for Making Cool Stuff

Kingdom Builder $59.99 – designed by Donald X. Vaccarino This spectacular game won the 2012 Spiel des Jahres. If you don’t know what that is, it is the highest achievement a board game can aspire to. I own this game and love it. I can’t wait until my kids are old enough to play this one with me. There is a huge amount of replay value built in as each game has three variable points that change each time you play. Even with the variations of each game players pick up the basics quickly. Suggested ages are 8 and up so this is a game dad can play with the kids or host a game night for the grown-ups with.

Jerrol’s Building Expansion Update & New Winegars Location

$18.99 – by Scott Bedford This one is for the maker dad, the one who loves to create. There are seven chapters ranging from home hacks to dangerous décor to playful parenting. Each chapter is broken down into various creations which are ranked in difficulty from easy to tricky. The instructions for creating each piece are detailed and specific which any maker worth his solder will appreciate. But don’t let that scare you off because there are things for the kids to help with as well.

We are thrilled to announce that Kelly Schademan and his team will be our contractors. We have been working with the city of Ellensburg Public Works department and have formally filed for our building permit. It looks like we could be braking ground in late July or August!! There are updated exterior design renderings, building and site drawings, and a timeline posted at Expansion.Jerrols.com.

Goal Setting Continued FAILURE!! It will happen to you. You’ve created your SMART goal—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant / Realistic, and Timed. It has a specific timed end point, and that comes and goes—but the goal isn’t accomplished. This is were the rubber hits the road. That little voice in your head can go two ways. Remember that YOU control that voice, just like you control your attitude. Are you going to let it tell you to quit? Is it going to say that it knew you couldn’t do it. Everyone told you so. Why did you even bother? OR are you going to tell yourself - Isn’t that interesting? I wonder what I could learn by what happened? Did I really create the habits I needed to accomplish this, and if I did create those habits what will I need to change to achieve my goal? Thomas Edison is famous for replying when asked about his “failure” to find a filament for the light bulb after 10,000 tries. 'I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. We are circling back to where we started in January talking about our habits. You need to create the habit of not giving up, not running yourself down for missing a goal, and instead develop what I call pig headed discipline and determination. So what if you missed it this time. Look at what you did do and what you learned and get back up in that preverbal saddle and get going. YOU CAN DO IT IF YOU DON’T QUIT!! My initial goal and deadline for our expansion was to be finished in February 2014. That date has long since gone by, but I continue to slog through engineers, designers, contractors, unrealistic building options vs budget constraints. I will not give up. I will make this happen. You can read past issues of our newsletter at www.jerrols.com\newsletters The January issue is where the goal discussion started, with a follow up in the April & May editions.

You’re Invited to Our 67th Anniversary Party!! My grandparents, Don & Irene Williams, opened the doors of Jerrol’s for the VERY first time 67 years ago—June 21, 1947. We were named Jerrol’s Handy Stop at that time. The same neon sign that is over our doors today was on top of that first building. That 18’ long sign is as long as the original store was wide!

FREE Scoops of Ice Cream Just For Stopping In! “Grandpa Don’s Root Beer Float” Saturday June 21 In the early days we were a soda fountain. Don and Irene offered cold food selections like pie and sandwiches, as well as magazines and other “sundry items”. Of all the dessert items that were offered, Grandpa liked root beer floats the best. The gang at Winegars Home Made Ice Cream & Coffee has once again mixed up a batch of our limited edition, “Grandpa Don’s Root Beer Float” ice cream just for you as a tribute to Grandpa Don. We are offering you a FREE scoop at our Anniversary Party, Saturday, June 21st from 9am to 6pm . We will even use the same ice cream scoop Grandpa Don used.

A FREE QUART of Ice Cream for Purchases of $67 or More For every purchase over $67 you are entitled to a FREE Quart of “Grandpa Don’s Root Beer Float” ice cream. If you like the ice cream and want to take some home, all you need to do is make a purchase of $67 (as in 67 years in business). Just one more way we say “Thank You” and we even figured out how to use “67”!! All of our history and photos can be found online including a new video history tour of the store at

The 67 Anniversary Edition A Few Comments From Our Clients Its always great that when I run out of an office product I run down there and you have it, and the staff knows right where it is!!! Angela Moore - Rewards Member As a customer, I like to be acknowledged, but if I just want to look, your employees are ok with that. If I need help, they know where I should look and help out with that. When I need ink for my printer, I love it that you can go into to my account and check out what I have previously bought. Diane Dippold - Rewards Member The items, materials, displays, clothing, books & learning materials are very intriguing for adults and children. Our grandchildren always enjoy shopping at Jerrols.
