The Art of Sumi Painting by Seattle Artist Yuming Zhu Saturday, August 8th, 11am - 4 pm This workshop will concentrate on Summer blooming, like Grapes and bamboo, using traditional brush strokes and background wash techniques to express the joyful yet sentimental feeling of the summer heat. You will learn to interpret Still Life using Sumi expressive brush strokes and composition. You are encouraged to bring flowers to arrange and paint and to suggest other subjects. Both beginning artists and professionals are encouraged to attend. Painters new to sumi, and those experienced in East Asian watercolor painting will be encouraged to look at the “World” in a different artistic perspective. There will be demos, exercises, and oneon-one attention.

You will use black and color ink and practice a variety of different brush strokes and forms. Your instructor, Yuming Zhu, is a very passionate and well-known artist in the Greater Seattle area. Sumi/Chinese Watercolor, Oil and Pastel are the mediums he loves to express himself with. He participated in the “Five Thoughts of Asian Art” program that was offered through the Seattle Art Museum and KCTS Channel 9. He continues teaching sumi painting and calligraphy at community colleges, art centers in the Seattle area and nation-wide. Also he shows his artwork at galleries.
