Jordan, my daughter, flew in from Williston, North Dakota for a week in mid July. She was in town to finalize most of her plans for her wedding on October 6th. I am writing this the second day of her visit—so much has yet to be done. On Thursday, she and Michelle will go for the fitting of her wedding dress. You may recall I tried to print a picture of the dress in the March newsletter, but was forbidden in case Israel, her fiancé, should see it. Jordan had the shoes for the wedding shipped to our house so she would have them for the fitting. I have received official authorization to print this picture because Jordan texted it to Israel already. His comment was they looked like Alice In Wonderland shoes. Her best friend thought they looked like Cinderella shoes. Jordan liked both comments!!

THE Shoes

As the event approaches, I have been repeatedly reminded that Jordan and I must come up with a song for the “father daughter dance” at the reception. The song doesn't concern me nearly as much as the dance. I am told that long ago in my youth Michelle and I used to go dancing often. This is something I have conveniently blocked from my memory. See, I don’t dance. Period. I remember Michelle and my quazi brother (more on that another time) Jim Skibeness making fun of my dancing about 25 years ago. Something about all shoulders and no body. Not that I can’t take a good joke and teasing, but that was the end of that. If I ever had danced before, NO MORE. So now this wedding father daughter dance thing. Jeezzz. Guess I better google dance instructor Ellensburg and find a therapist as well. The things we do for our children. -Rolf P.S. New Items SEVENEVES Neal Stephenson $35.00 Those who have read Neal Stephenson’s earlier works know that he likes to do things big. Big ideas, big characters and a big page count are all hallmarks of his writing. His latest doesn’t disappoint on any of these fronts. Even at a bulky 880 pages Seveneves never feels like too much, in fact I wanted it to continue for several hundred pages more when I was done. Set in the immediate future, 10-20 years from now, Seveneves begins with the destruction of the moon into seven fragments. This isn’t a spoiler, it happens on page 3. Within the first chapter humanity realizes that all those fragments are going to break up into smaller fragments that will become meteorites and what once was the moon will rain fire for millennia sterilizing the earth. The big brains calculate that humanity has 2 years to save itself from mass extinction. The most viable option is to get as much of humanity into space as possible but all those rocks, big and small, orbiting earth aren’t going to make life easy for them. Of course space debris isn’t the only hurdle to overcome; the biggest obstacle to the survival of humanity is the humans. What follows is a true epic that follows the survivors as they make a bid for the continuation of our species. At times Stephenson wears his research on his sleeve. There are passages that can feel dense; there are passages that seem apropos of nothing but everything has a purpose and every info dump has a reason for being there. Personally I loved the hard science presented. I enjoyed learning about orbital mechanics and the implications of cosmic radiation. I have been an unabashed fan of Neal Stephenson’s since I read Snow Crash in college and every new book is built up in my mind, heck I even burst into song when I got a review copy of Seveneves. This was one of the rare occasions in my life where what I built up in my head was justified. It is just a great

book that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a great book with wonderfully defined characters, bedrock solid storytelling and pacing, and just a touch of prognosticating. - Review by RJ Woods
