A VOCABULARY AND A GRAMMAR SCALE MOVEMENT & CONTEXT LEARNING HOW TO LEARN FROM ARCHITECTURE DESIGN AS SYNTHESIS
A VOCABULARY AND A GRAMMAR Exercise 1 In the first exercise, the students are asked to use linear, planar and volumetric materials to produced 4-1/2" cubes that applies assigned operation: Fracture. Then, based on the study models, students are expected to produce a 9" cube by applying the same operation. In this exercise, students developed spatial hierarchy with given materials and established a system that sets up a foundation for future project. 3

SCALE MOVEMENT & CONTEXT Exercise 2.1 In the first part of exercise 2 the student is grouped with other students* to study the spatial sequence of one of the campus buildings. In this exercise students used their bodies to mesure the building in order to produce a series of drawings that record the accurate scale, movement, and context of the architecture. *Work collaboratively with Helna Zhen, Adhityan Anbumozhi and Hussain Alkazemi Carnagie Library, Syracuse, NY, Photographer: Jiuye Yan

Exercise 2.2 The second part of exercise 2 provided students a site which contains a desirable and an undesirable view. Students are asked to transform the cubes from the first exercise into a spatial sequence that will locate on this site. In this exercise, students further practiced the previous operation fracture by creating pathways for circulation using the operation.

LEARNING HOW TO LEARN FROM ARCHITECTURE Exercise 3 The third exercise asked students to apply knowledge learned in exercise 1 & 2 to complete an analysis for an important building. Based on individual research, students created a series of drawings that analyzed the Mesa at Amangiri. Students incorporated multiple elements, such as, orientation, building material, geographical context and sunlight, in to the axonometric drawing and other diagrams. 13

DESIGN AS SYNTHESIS
Exercise 4 The final exercise asked students to design a small house, located in a community of 20 artists, for an artist to live and produce art. Students are asked to consider the context of the location into the design process. The Cage House is designed as a stage for the dancer to showcase his/ her daily life instead of only the stage performance. This project demonstrates formal operations such as puncture, bend and carve to create a brand new relationship between performer and audience. 15
