Human lives are constructed through memories. From the moment of birth, newborns are creating memories for themselves and everyone around them. Although some memories bring joy to the world, undesired memories could evoke negative feelings. For them who are going through the irreversible process of dying, carrying heavy loads of undesired memories might cause more pain than pleasure. Therefore, by locating a hospice entirely underground, <Eternal Escape> created a realm between life and death. While the solar tubes bridge between the dying community and the society of temporal lives, they also allow the residents to control the data-flow between the two realms and achieve the transition from focusing on the external world to their internal world.

The lifespan of a book is short - especially the lifespan of the book that resides in a library. It’s been torn, dropped, dirtied, and destroyed through the hands of many, with its life-ending abruptly when it’s thrown into the trash. However, what happens to the book outside the library can not be controlled. To preserve the lifespan of these neglected books, a new <Ospedale dei Libri>, or book hospital has been created. Once the book has been safely returned to the library, this hospital will carefully inspect, repair, then promptly disinfect the book and return it to its shelf. This process has been streamlined and made into a public spectacle for the enjoyment of people and the safety of these books.

Being the former freight port of New York and New Jersey, Red Hook is filled with vacant lands and is transitioning away from an over the industrialized community. Meanwhile, the underutilized neighborhood is also facing the constant threat of flooding ever since its settlement. To revive Red Hook, <Divergence> extended the waterfront setting by pivoting overlapping planes off from the sea level - adopting the ebb and flow rather than keeping them away from the land. The three reviving programs, Waterfront Museum, Red Hook Ferry Terminal, and Shipwright Artist Space, diverge outwards over the ocean while converging inwards back to the urban fabric. The continuous waterfront experience becomes the new transportation and cultural center and connects Red Hook to the rest of the city.

<Tangled> is not simply a house for the dancer. It is also designed as a stage to showcase the life of the dancer behind the scene. This project demonstrates formal operations such as puncture, bend, and carve to illustrate a brand new relationship between the dancer and their audience. As the audience progressing through space, the distance between them and the life of the dancer are erased through highlighting the dancer’s dedication and discipline; the authority over space are also reconstructed through alternation between two tangled but isolated progression as the territory transitions from public to private.

<Alpha Boom Co-housing> proposes a hybrid senior housing community and daycare for young children in place of an abandoned department store in New Jersey. The hybrid strategy aims to create diverse energy levels and activities throughout the complex to benefit both populations. The intergenerational community is largely enclosed by the existing structure, however, the design carves out and pushes through portions of the original building to create a series of indoor-outdoor spaces and courtyards. Modest housing units are located on the first level and supplemented with cooperative amenities like a kitchen, lounges, and gardens. The second level incorporates the daycare and stretches across the length of the structure. Double height zones merge the amenity spaces of the older residents below with the classroom spaces of the young children above, creating truly shared, inter-generational links.

Swissness Applied is part of a larger research project that focuses on the transformation of European immigrant towns in the United States. These towns share the common aspiration of preserving and perpetuating the architectural charm of their cultural heritage to enhance the social and economic base of their community. The project contributes to the ongoing discussion on the role of imagery and cultural appropriation in architecture and urban design planning. The two models on the right were constructed by Jiuye [Jerry] Yan as part of the Model Fabrication Team for this on-going exhibition.
