THE ANALYSIS OF A CITY AND ITS ARCHITECTURE Exercise 1 In the first exercise, student worked collaboratively with four other students* to analyze and document downtown Syracuse in the category of Buildings. Students first grouped the buildings in downtown Syracuse by Historical, Residential, Retail, Civic, and Parking. Then students put those buildings back into their context and studied their relationship with surrounding buildings. *Kelsey Benitez, Andrew Harper, Ally Peyton and Eli Warshauer

THE ANALYSIS OF URBAN BLDGS AND THEIR FACADES Exercise 2 The second exercise shifts the analyzing practice from the scale of a city to individual urban buildings around the globe. Students worked in pairs* to research and analyze the Idea Store at Whitechapel; during the process they discovered how Idea Store occupies its facade to make connection between the surrounding and its program. *Collaboration with David Chen

DESIGNING AN URBAN BLDG Exercise 3 The final exercise brought students back to downtown Syracuse and asked them to design an archive for Syracuse within the edge condition site. The Lantern Archive is located where walton st. meets the Onondaga Creek. By multiplying two different conditions into two formal operations, student took context into consideration and allowed it to interact with the building space. 11
