Architecture constitutes the physical form of negotiation. It solidifies a fraction of this social phenomenon, which has started long before the construction of the first building and will continue to exist as long as a society still generates conflicts. The practice of architecture then resembles the designing of the Common Ground, where the differences—that are nested between generations, nature and built environment, domestic structures, and occupational interests—are able to be set aside for the shared commonalities. <Alpha Boom Co-housing> proposes a hybrid senior housing and children’s daycare in place of an abandoned department store in Hazlet, New Jersey. Nesting within the existing structure, the intergenerational living community diversifies spatial conditions and blurs the boundaries of interior and exterior.

Modest housing units are located on the first level and supplemented with cooperative amenities like a kitchen, lounges, and gardens. The second level incorporates the daycare and stretches across the length of the structure. Double-height zones merge the amenity spaces of the older residents below with the classroom spaces of the young children above, creating truly shared, inter-generational connectivities.

02 Divergence Common Ground
perspective from the ocean
The three distinctive programs, Waterfront Museum, Red Hook Ferry Terminal, and Shipwright Artist Space, diverge outwards over the ocean while converging inwards to the urban fabric. They act as different threads of a single rope that establishes a new image for the waterfront of Red Hook while creating a unique experience for visitors and opportunities for the local community.

Through the combination of local organizations and residential units, the new community center uplifts the home of Syracuse locals and develops a flexible structure both spatially and socially. It allows the space to grow with its residents, achieving true sustainability by extending its life cycle.

<Oscillate> proposes an alternative housing model in downtown Syracuse that also addresses existing building preservation by deploying a hybrid structural system. While the envelope pivots corresponding to the environmental constraints, the building’s structural system functions independently in a rigid manner to enhance spatial flexibility, and the vav-integrated mass-timber structure maximized floor occupancy and versatility.

The lifespan of a book is short— especially the lifespan of the book that resides in a library. It’s been torn, dropped, dirtied, and destroyed through the hands of many, with its life-ending abruptly and thrown into the trash. However, what happens to the book outside the library can not be controlled. A new <Ospedale dei Libri>, or book hospital, has been created to preserve the lifespan of these neglected books. destroy shelf

04 Ospedale dei Libri Common Ground
Located near Sant’Amrbogio Market, Florence University School of Architecture, and La Nazione newsletter office, the extension of Architecture School Library encounters a diverse crowd of audiences. By extending the loggia typology, the four wings of the annex correspond to four groups of users. Threaded by the book-repairing tracks, the new courtyard becomes the merging point of a brand new community with diverse interests.
