My thanks to the Northern Districts club for bringing together a sensational program for the 2024 AGM and Conference.

This is most certainly the best week on the Association calendar as it gives us the opportunity for the Board and Management and staff to spend some quality time with the membership and report to you on the Associations activities as well as providing the membership the opportunity to raise your questions and concerns for our response.

New Class System

The Association planned to have the new class system in place for the Autumn class tour however due to some implementation delays we have deferred. While testing of the system has begun, the time frames to the commencement of the Autumn tour was becoming too tight to ensure we could undertake the appropriate level testing to provide the level of comfort the system will be able to do what we want it to do.

2024 Election

At the close of nominations for the 2024 elections, a total of 5 nominations had been received and accepted for the 5 vacant board positions. As the number of nominations received was equal to the available positions, an election will not be required, and the nominees will automatically be elected to the board.

The nominees received are:

• For the vacant 1-year position

o David Boyd

• For the vacant 2-year position

o Lisa Broad

o Jane Sykes

o Geoff Akers

o Robert Anderson

My congratulations to these members for making the commitment to provide the governance and direction for the Association and I look forward to continuing to work with you to deliver the Association objectives.

Best Regards,

From the Front Desk

PRODUCTION AWARD CHANGES

The Board of Jersey Australia has implemented changes to the criteria for Production Awards lifting the production requirements for each category for Milk Solid Kg’s and removing the minimum protein KG requirements.

The new criteria is as follows:

Award Minimum Kg of Milk Solids

Platinum Award 600kg per cow

Gold Award 560kg per cow

Silver Award 520kg per cow

Bronze Award 480kg per cow

There is no change to the other qualifying criteria which is:

• Minimum 20 cows to qualify for the herd.

• Cows must be tested on average at least 4 times in the qualifying period.

• The cow’s lactation must be completed between the date of January 1, 2023, and December 31st, 2023.

• Completed lactations must be between 240 and 330 days in length.

• Cows who complete a short or extended lactation are excluded from the reporting.

• All data is provided by herd test records provided by your herd test centre to DataGene.

The changes to the production requirements reflect improvement in the Jersey breed since they were last revised more than 10 years ago.

PRODUCTION AWARD CHANGES

The Board have reviewed the production requirements of the STP Award and made and amendment to be a fixed minimum 3,500Kg of Milk Solids required to be produced to qualify for the award. This is a change from the previous criteria which was a floating figure based on the average of the top 10 production award winning herds multiplied by 6.

The change standardised the production requirement to that cows are required to achieve to qualify for a Jersey Elite Award.

JA REGIONS

A reminder to members who are in regions that have no active clubs that you will need to establish with Jersey Australia a JA Region to facilitate running of events and entry into competitions such as the Great Southern and Great Northern Challenge.

Active clubs are clubs who meet the consumer affairs requirements within your state, provide Jersey Australia with a copy of the clubs AGM minutes and pay the annual club affiliation fee.

For more information on JA Regions visit: https://jersey.com.au/jersey-australia-regions/

WORLD DAIRY EXPO 2024

Jersey Australia with our event partners will have a trade site again this year at World Dairy Expo.

Member interested in travelling to WDE 2024 should register their interest with JA by contacting Glen on 0418 466 371 or email Glen.Barrett@jersey.com.au

Bookings will be made in June.

If you are interested in going a reminder to check your passport to ensure it is valid

CHANGES TO THE CLASSIFIER PANEL

We have a number of changes to the Jersey Australia classifier panel with Jamie Drury stepping of the class panel after the spring tour. Jamie has taken a job with World Wide Sires.

Scott Connell has also for the time being stepped off the panel with changes to staff at home on the farm not enabling the time required to commit to being a classifier.

We welcome the appointment of Jake Matthews as a Senior Classifier. Jake replaces Jamie Drury and Les Bennett who stood down as a Senior Classifier during the last Spring tour.

Jersey Australia is pleased to announce the appointment of Simon Reid and David Andrson as probationary classifiers.

Simon and David have been training for some time and we look forward to them being in the field during the Autumn tours.

SIX JERSEY BREEDERS ADDED TO GA HONOUR BOARD

Six of Australia’s premier Jersey farmers whose bulls have made a huge contribution on the national herd and many herds across the globe have been added to the Genetics Australia Honour Board.

Joining three Holstein and two Australian Reds breeders, the six Jersey studs received the honour during the GA 2024: Today, Tomorrow and Beyond conference in Geelong on March 18, joining an elite group of master breeders.

Genetics Australia (GA) CEO Anthony Shelly said the honour board, which takes pride of place in the GA boardroom, features Australian as well as several overseas breeders who have bred bulls that made a significant mark on genetic improvement in Australia.

“Our latest Jersey breeders added to the list thoroughly deserve this accolade,” he said. “Australia has some of the Jersey herds in the world and six of the best had been added to the honour board. All the inductees have made a massive contribution to the growth and genetic improvement of Jerseys in Australia.”

Traditionally, selection to the honour board was based primarily on proven bulls but today it is a broader combination of genomic and proven bull successes.

Wallacedale Jerseys owned by Luke and Mel Wallace from Poowong North in Gippsland has some very popular bulls in the current GA line up including Homozygous bull STARK,

as well as GOLDBANDP, PICKETT, DEPOLE, LEMONPEEL, and former number one bull PICKLE.

A number of herd’s high-rated genomic heifers have also been sold to Pakistan where they are showing the quality of Australian Jerseys, paving the way for increased semen sales.

Rob and Kerrie Anderson’s Kings Ville Jerseys at Drouin West in Gippsland has developed some of the breed’s finest cow families. Kings Ville BEDFORD continues to sell in large numbers in South Africa and other Kings Ville bulls include BOOST, QANTAS and in the past year BASHFUL, sire of BEDFORD, obtained his first ABV. A few new Kings Ville bulls are likely to be added to the 2024 sire line up.

Con and Michelle Glennen from Noorat in Western Victoria have waved the Australian Jersey flag in several counties including the US,

South Africa, New Zealand and Ireland. Their White Star Jersey herd is the current number 1 BPI, HWI and SI herd. The Glennen herd was one of the early adopters of AI and the herd has used AI ever since bulls became available. Standout bulls include DOUGGAN, DOBSON, VALENBLAST and recently ENMORE.

Robert and Sandra Bacon developed Brookbora Jerseys at Tennyson in Northen Victoria, currently the number two BPI herd. Brookbora ASKN has been a very popular bull internationally and has daughters in US, CANADA, South Africa, Pakistan, Europe, UK and Jersey Island.

BORUNG is currently the highest bull with milking daughters, from an ASKN daughter and the third Brookbora bull is AEROGLEN, sired by BORUNG. After Robert’s death last year, the herd is being continued by Sandra and their son Daniel.

The Australian Jersey Journal – March - April 2024 // page 12

Bercar Jerseys owned by Bernie and Carol McManus from Bamawm Extension bred a bull called PASSIVE in the mid-2000s and today ARDENT, the number two Jersey bull with milking daughters, and BESTYET are also successful Bercar bulls. Bernie and Carol have now retired from dairying but Bercar will continue to have an impact through these bulls for many years to come.

Loxleigh Jerseys owned by Geoff and Natalie Akers from Tallygaroopna in northern Victoria is another Jersey herd that ranks with the best in the world. INVINCIBLE, IZUKU, IRYMPLE and VENTURA are all bulls having an impact now and will continue into the future.

RETIREMENT ON HOLD MemberProfile

Five years ago, Rob Salter was milking 80 cows at his northern Victorian farm with his eye firmly on retirement.

Now Rob and his partner Danny Griffiths are milking 260 with plans to hit 300 this year, with the renewed interest also leading to the herd being registered.

It has been a big turnaround and mixed with a pizza shop that Rob runs four nights a week, thoughts of retirement have been shunted down the track.

Rob’s parents settled the farm near Kerang in 1966 and Rob, 57, has lived all his life on the property.

His parents had a cross-bred herd and Rob started working on the farm when he was 15.

Danny’s parents bought a dairy farm in Queensland when he was 10 and had the farm for 21 years before leaving when the industry was deregulated in 2000.

He has worked in dairy and hospitality over the years but two years ago decided he’d had enough of dealing with the public and moved to Victoria.

Danny, who had 40 Jersey heifers that he’d reared from a previous job, met Rob and was offered a job and the rest is history.

They’ve been together two years and now co-own the cows.

“When I started working for Rob in May 2022, he was milking about 80 and had bought a couple of lines of heifers that were starting to calve,” Danny said.

“When he saw that I was interested and knew what I was doing, we started going to a few sales, buying 10-15 cows from different farms.”

The herd consists of about 60 Cairnbrae prefix cows sold by Alan and Janine Carson when they retired.

“We probably have the highest infusion of Cairnbrae cows in the country,” Rob said. “They’re great cows from great cow families,” Danny added. “Daisy and Estelle in particular are very consistent families. We’ve got a heap of young stock coming from them and they’re good cows to work with.”

Rob also continues to breed with strong cow families in his Barringa stud.

They have bought other cows from particular families to increase the genetic base, concentrating on udders, capacity, feet and legs.

They will start doing embryo work and over the past couple of years have successfully introduced sexed semen.

“We’ve still got some cross-bred cows but they will go,” Danny said. “They’re been mated to beef so we won’t increase the cross numbers.”

Rob had registered his cows in the 1980s but let that lapse until Danny encouraged him into re-registering.

“Now everything is registered up to the calves and we’ve started to herd test,” Rob said.

“The cell count measure is a great tool. We know what cows are doing and once we get to the numbers we want, we will be able to cull based on production.

“It adds value to the herd and helps to keep interest in the cows.”

The renewed interest has also led to another first - showing a heifer at IDW for the first time this year. “She didn’t do any good but she looked great,” Danny laughed.

She was prepared and shown by Cherrylock Cattle Co and won junior champion in the local on-farm challenge. She will calve in August or September and if she looks all right, might return to Dairy Week next year.

The 1300-acre farm is currently milking 260 but will be over 300 by spring.

Years ago, Rob had two dairy farms and milked 450 in the drought, but vowed never go back to such numbers.

However, if neighbouring farms come up for sale they might invest.

“I had the empire before and got rid of it, now I’m going back,” Rob said. “I said we weren’t going over 300 but if the neighbouring farm comes up for sale we could.”

He’s also running a pizza parlour in Cohuna four nights a week.

“It’s easy money compared to dairy farming and I don’t mind working with the public,” Rob says.

Despite his hospitality background, Danny isn’t helping out. “I just mop the floors occasionally. I’m the cow man; I’m sick of hospitality.”

It is a busy set up. “We do push the boundaries a bit,” Rob added.

The Australian Jersey Journal – March - April 2024 // page 14 WORDS // MEDIA MASTERS, Rick Bayne

“Danny milks seven days a week; I milk every morning and three nights and the other four nights are in the pizza parlour. The nights at the shop are my nights off from the cows.”

As numbers increase, they may have to look at hiring staff.

Rob has two sons interested in the farm. Luke works for the farm while Brady is undertaking a mechanics apprenticeship.

In five years, they hope to have a sale to reduce cow numbers and in 10 years hope to hand over the business to the boys.

Jerseys have always been part of the farming plan for both Rob and Danny.

Rob built the dairy with Jerseys in mind. “They fit better and they’re an easy, good-tempered cow to work with,” he said.

Both are keen gardeners with 1.5 acres of the property dedicated to the garden, including 1000 seedlings planted last spring.

That influence extends to the farm where over time Rob has planted 25,000 trees and they will plant more this season.

IN FOR THE LONG HAUL

Like Genetics Australia, Loxleigh Jerseys has had a big impact on the Australian dairy scene over many decades.

Loxleigh Jerseys, owned by Geoff and Natalie Akers from Tallygaroopna in northern Victoria, was one of 11 recent additions to the GA honour board.

After more than 70 years, Loxleigh continues to hit new highs, including being chosen as a Jersey Australia Master Breeder last year.

Speaking on behalf of 11 inductees at the presentation ceremony, Geoff said that all recipients were humbled to be added to the list of breeders, placing them alongside many famous herds.

And he paid tribute to the role GA has played over the course.

“We thank Genetics Australia and its predecessors for being the backbone of the Australian artificial breeding industry for 66 years,” Geoff said.

“Today we know Australian genetics are acknowledged as some of the best dairy genetics in the world and we are now in a position where our genetics are marketed around the world.

“We should be proud that we bred something here in Australia that is being marketed in all sorts of countries. Genetics Australia has had a significant role in making that happen. GA and its predecessors have been selecting bulls from Australian farms every year for more than 60 years – no other company has done this.

“This stability has given breeders confidence in that they knew if they bred good bulls, there would be a progeny test or young bull program for them to put bulls into every year.

“GA played a significant role in developing some of the best genetics in the world here in Australia and now giving us the opportunity to market them across the world.”

Geoff said he was pleased GA had made “tough decisions” to address modern challenges and ensure Australia retained a successful cooperative that contributed to a viable Australian genetics industry.

Geoff and Natalie have farmed at Tallygaroopna since 1993 and currently milk about 800 jerseys, 100 Friesian and cross breds. The name Loxleigh steams from the area the Akers family farmed near Nagambie until 1912.

Over the journey the stud has recorded three 94-point cows, with the most recent Loxleigh Hatman Marie 6209 hailing from a family bought by Geoff’s father and grandfather, Harold and Bob Akers in 1952, just a year or two after starting the stud.

Loxleigh Hatman Marie 6289 follows Astound Iris 4 and Badger Iris 4 (pictured) as the stud’s 94-point cows, leading a team that has included multiple 93-point cows and countless 90+ Excellent.

“To

get a 94-point cow from a family we’ve had for 70 years was a great thrill,” Geoff

said.

Loxleigh has recorded four Jersey Australia On-Farm Challenge Great Southern Champion awards and achieved platinum milk production status for the past five years.

“We’re milking a number of his daughters and we get good reports from others who are milking them in terms of their production and strength and type,” Geoff said.

“We focus on breeding good cows and genomically test a few bulls each year.”

Loxleigh has entered many bulls into A.I programs, and currently has one of the best performers in Australia in INIVINCIBLE. “We’re quite pleased with how he is going,” Geoff said.

Loxleigh uses mainly Australian genetics and Geoff looks for production with high type, with a strong focus on udders and deepribbed cows with plenty of strength in the front end.

CENTRAL GIPPSLAND

JERSEY BREEDERS CLUB INC

CENTRAL GIPPSLAND

62 nd Jersey Fair

Surrounded by a large crowd, Gippsland graced us with yet another beautiful Autumn day to see and celebrate some of Australia’s best Jersey cattle at the Central Gippsland 62nd Jersey Fair in Warragul.

Our judge, Mr Roger Heath of Wanstead Jerseys had the job enviable to all - to officiate this quality show with 75 jerseys entered and with cattle travelling from all over Victoria and southern New South Wales to compete.

Roger Heath had a wonderful day, describing the show as having ‘world class cattle’ and that there wasn’t an animal there he wouldn’t be proud to own himself.

He also remarked that the ‘most rewarding part was his senior champion line up and how the cows wonderfully matched each other’ and that it will certainly go down as one of the best shows he has judged.

With judging taking place under the trees, surrounded by decorations that celebrated dairying - this year saw a focus on catering with food that honoured dairy products & were enjoyed by many in the picnic - like environment around the ring.

The Untethered Chef, Matt Wilson, cooked up an incredible selection of food utilising premium dairy products donated by That’s Amore Cheese, Gippsland Jersey and Bulla Family Dairy - along with Gippsland Jersey vans’ pure Jersey milkshakes that were available too. This event has rapidly grown in strength & is well supported by spectators, the dairy industry and exhibitors that travel from all across Victoria to be in attendance.

With the generous support of businesses it has enabled prize money of more than $7,000.

Thank you to the hard working organising team and the volunteers that help each year.

We look forward to welcoming you at next year’s Jersey Fair.

GIPPSLAND DAIRY SUPPORTING OUR NEXT GENERATION

Gippsland Dairy Youth (GDY) is organised by a group of young adults passionate about the dairy industry. Our annual show is designed for individuals aged 25 and under to help share the knowledge and skills to the younger generation. GDY is committed to creating an environment where everyone can come and learn how to present their animals to the very best of their ability.

Throughout the year, Gippsland Dairy youth holds clinics to help assist with various skills crucial for showmanship. Participants learn the importance of preparing the animal for the show right through to how they should look in the ring, including clipping and leading. Additionally, these clinics educate attendees the different things the judges look for in the cows to help you stand out.

The youth also learn what is done after a show, this way they learn right from start to finish. We encourage anyone from all ages to come and learn, we all had to start from somewhere and this is what GDY thrive on is making and creating a safe space for everyone. Passing on our passion to help the youth creates their own unique goal and dreams within the industry.

On Sunday, March 10th, 2024, we held our annual youth show. It turned out to be one of our most successful events in quite a while, especially considering the challenges posed by the COVID era. We were thrilled to have a 70 animals entered and 32 enthusiastic kids participating in various classes throughout the day.

We were so lucky with the amount of sponsorship and support from everyone to make the day run smoothly. We congratulate all the children that put in so much effort and time with their animals this year. We're already looking forward to returning next year, ready to make it even bigger and better than ever before!

The GDY committee extends their heartfelt gratitude to our 2024 Judge, Andrew Cullen. Andrew's eagerness to participate in judging the show and imparting his wealth of knowledge and experience to the youth has been truly appreciated. The youth have absorbed a great deal during the two significant days we've hosted, they're buzzing with excitement for whatever comes next!

Keep up to date with our Facebook page and Instagram “Gippsland Dairy Youth” to find information about any upcoming clinics held through out the year. Our first clinic of the year was held on the 3rd of April.

ABV UPDATE: AGRI-GENE

Agri-gene is delighted to be able to add three new Jersey sires to an already superior Jersey line-up.

These 3 newcomers are made up of 2 new Australian bulls and a new high type outcross sire from Blondin Sires, Unique GHOST who is one of the highest type and udder sires on the market.

New Aussie sire Miami Craze ELECTRIC is a timely New Jersey bull that arrives on the scene just as the breed is crying out for some higher fertility bulls.

Sitting at +112 for daughter fertility ELECTRIC is the breed's No.1 fertility sire, he is an A2A2 Craze son from the Elsie family at Miami backed by many generations of EX and VG cows.

As well as No.1 for fertility he is also the No. 1 HWI sire and at +392 for BPI he is a top 10 BPI sire.

The other new sire is ROULETTE son White Star TWOUP, he is our highest BPI sire at +451 and has an outstanding well-balanced proof combining good production, positive components with excellent fertility and health traits plus a type linear that is hard to fault.

ROULETTE himself continues to shine and is the breed's highest BPI bull with a daughter fertility score over 100.

ROULETTE remains a top 10 bull in Australia for BPI, HWI, SI, overall type, and production. He is also proving popular in the USA where he is one of the few bulls to be over +2 for PTAT and +18 for JUI with positive DPR.

Popular A2A2 Polled sire BROADWAY- P remains the breed’s No.1 type sure at +112 for overall type and +111 for udders.

Sadly lost.

I recently had a discussion with an AI company representative who was talking about a bull who had an interesting proof but lamenting that they wouldn’t be able to bring the new young bull to market.

The bull had positive production ABV’s for litres and fat and protein %, good type and mammary proofs of 106 and 108 and for the Jersey breed an extraordinary Daughter Fertility ABV of 108. The AI reps lament was that the bulls BPI was only 309 and based on that alone would be too difficult to take to market.

With some 60% of the Jersey bulls listed as a Good Bulls Guide bull on the December 2023 ABV run below a BPI 309 the key question that challenges why does a bull that offers so much potential on perhaps the most key trait concern in Daughter Fertility for the breed without compromising on production and type as well as being a good profit driver, not be considered good enough to take to market.

As we look towards the 2025 National Breeding Index, these are significant questions that we need to ask. Are breeders not prepared to do enough to ensure key traits of concern for the breed are given enough priority to ensure we don’t go backward.

Fertility is no doubt a key trait that is of some concern and while the high historical base of fertility for the jersey breed does not give much room to improve, breeders to have a prominent role to play to ensure we don’t lose the breed advantages.

Powerhouse bulls of the breed such as VANAHLEM and VALENTINO have been tremendous sires in placing the Australian jersey bull where it is today, but with both bulls having poor fertility, the impact they can have as high use long term sires on fertility can be impactful.

Setting the right breeding goals and objectives is a long-term strategy. Today’s bull selection will take nearly 3 years of nurturing to see the results of that bull enter the dairy.

While it is important to stay true to your breeding goals and objectives to see the long term benefits, it is also just as important to take into consideration what the breed needs are as well and factor these needs into your breeding program as well.

Don’t be afraid to use a total outcross sire even if its proof doesn’t rate in your goals if you have heavily used a particular bull in your herd.

In breeding is one of our biggest challenges and this is exacerbated in index driven system around the world as high index cows and bulls are more likely to breed the next generation high index progeny and when a really good bull is identified as a reliable sire of sons the genetic variations can only narrow further.

We need to have courage in our breeding selection process to use bulls that are outcross to add genetic diversity and to use trait leading bulls in key traits of concern at the expense of personal key areas of concern to drive breed improvement.

NATIONAL BREEDING OBJECTIVE

To assist the Association through the National Breeding Objective, we have prepared a member survey to enable us to collect and collate your feedback on the current and future genetic needs of the Australian Jersey.

WORDS // GLEN BARRETT Genetics

Vale ANDREW “MOTOR” YOUNGER

Few were as enthusiastic and passionate about the Jersey breed as Andrew Younger and his recent passing has seen us all stop and share a story or 3 of our respective encounters over the years.

Registering his first jersey with the Kaddy prefix in 1981, “Motor” as he was widely known established a quality herd built on the great family lines such as the Sandy’s, Estelles, Illagay’s, Magnificents and Sandra's over 40 years of breeding. Andrew was exceptionally proud of Kaddy Trader Girl who won the 2-Year-old Great Southern Challenge in 2001.

Holding an amazing memory for cows, very few could recite pedigree's like Andrew could.

Andrew was a great contributor to the breed through many years of service with cattle clubs particularly with the Goulburn Murray club and the Jersey Australia Vic Branch board and was a regular supporter of local shows and calf days and was encouraging and supportive of all trying to make their way in the breed.

In recent times, Motor was a avid devotee on various Facebook pages especially in Pakistan. He served as an admin/moderator of a page boasting over 46,000 followers passionately promoting the jersey breed in that country. In his own way, he played a key role in establishing Pakistan as a key market for Australian Jerseys.

Outside of the Jersey breed, Motor was a passionate hockey player and was selected to represent Victoria in the Over 55 National championship and loved to get out on the rock n roll dance floor.

Jersey Australia's condolences go out to Andrew’s Family and Friends.
