From the Front Desk
I trust you all enjoyed a terrific Christmas and New Year surrounded by family and friends, and where possible, a chance to put your feet up for a few days break. With the new year now here, we look towards a busy year for Jersey Australia. The World Conference in April will undoubtedly keep us busy during the first half of the year. However, we remain committed to delivering our full range of member services, events and activities throughout the year.
This year presents an opportunity to engage with our members on the National Breeding Objective, taking the initiative on setting the direction of the breed for the next five years. We no doubt have some key questions to consider.
Fertility continues to be a key concern for everyone, yet bulls with negative fertility traits are still being accepted in the marketplace. As breeders and the key decision makers when purchasing semen, it's up to you to set the standard for what you're prepared to accept. It is a little challenging and frustrating to manage the direction of a trait such as fertility that both Breeders and Industry raise as a concern for the Jersey Breed. Yet, bulls with below-average fertility ABVs continue to be offered in the marketplace. To support the concerns raised and to ensure the Breed leading advantage that we have is not whittled away, we may need to consider increasing the Fertility weighting in the BPI to further penalise the below average bulls and reward those above average. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this.
Thank You Lisa Broad
I would like to take the opportunity to thank Lisa Broad for her support and encouragement as both a Board Member, Chair or Genetics and the President of Jersey Australia. Your advice, guidance and direction have been tremendously helpful and supportive along my journey with Jersey Australia. Your support has always been the most welcome, appreciated and much valued.
I look forward to catching up with members at International Dairy Week. Jersey Australia will be ringside during the event with Jersey Milk coffees from Sunday.

On Farm Results Review
Over the past couple of months, clubs and regions have been undertaking their On-Farm Challenges culminating in the Great Southern and Northern Challenges across the country. These On-Farm Challenges are our premier event, showcasing approximately 2,500 cows to judges nationwide and a wide member engagement
We are seeing a number of challenges starting to creep into the competition that will require appropriate consideration and action.
This year, 3 clubs opted not to run an On-Farm Challenge, and on 2 occasions, clubs combined their events, resulting in reduced entry numbers for the Great Southern and Northern Challenges.
• The extensive distance and time away from home makes it challenging to get judges to commit to the event.
The Board of Jersey Australia is seeking member feedback on the competition and is proposing the following alternative format for consideration:
• Australia to be divided into 6 competition regions
• Gippsland
• Western Victoria
• Northern Victoria – Including NSW Riverina
• Central and Southern NSW
• Northern NSW and Queensland
• South Australia, Tasmania and WA
The winners from each region would advance to compete in the Great Australian Challenge, offering a far greater number of opportunities for members to compete for the National titles.
Each region to choose the appropriate time of year to run the competition that suits them
• Regions would have until the end of February each year to complete their regional challenges
• Club challenges will provide their entries into the regional competition
• If regions have insufficient clubs or the capacity to run individual club challenges, regions may opt to choose to run a region-wide On-Farm Challenge instead.
Any changes to the competition will need to ensure members participation across the country remains the highest priority and the fundamentals of the competition in judging cows in their working environment remains intact.
Members are encouraged to share their thoughts on the On-Farm Challenges by emailing the office: jersey@jersey.com.au

International Dairy Week Preview
International Dairy Week (IDW) is set to celebrate a major milestone in 2025 - marking 35 years as Australia’s premier dairy showcase. Over the past three and a half decades, IDW has grown into the ultimate celebration of the dairy industry, bringing together breeders, exhibitors, and enthusiasts from across the globe.
As part of the 35th-anniversary celebrations, IDW will host a special dinner in collaboration with Power of Women in Dairying and the National Herd Improvement Association of Australia. The event, held in the heart of the show arena, will feature an address by Brian Leslie, the founder of IDW, and presentations of the Bette Hall Award, Lex Bunn Award, alongside NHIA, IDW and POW awards. Hosted by renowned dairy industry MC Tom Newton, the dinner promises to be a highlight of the week.
Jerseys will take center stage this January, excelling in various competitions while Jersey Australia maintains its prominent ringside presence. Visitors can also enjoy barista-made coffees featuring the finest Australian milk, showcasing the exceptional taste of Jersey milk. As the largest event on the Australian dairy calendar, IDW promises to be a vibrant celebration of all things dairy.
General Manager Glen Barrett describes IDW as Jersey Australia’s key member engagement event outside the AGM.
“It’s a great opportunity to connect with members who are showing or visiting, and we see it as an excellent platform to promote the breed,” Glen said.
Jersey Australia’s prime trade site will be buzzing with activity during IDW, held from January 18th -23rd at Tatura.
Highlights include the STG Create the Future Sale, which will showcase some of Australia’s finest genetics, and JA will operate a corporate coffee card initiative, where companies can purchase cards for their staff to redeem for coffee, with proceeds supporting the Youth Movement initiative.
New to the program this year is the inaugural Australian Clipping Championships, scheduled for Saturday evening, which will coincide with the lively Tatura Food Truck Festival. As the largest event on the Australian dairy calendar, IDW 2025 promises to be a vibrant celebration of all things dairy, honoring its rich history and exciting future.
IDW JUDGE:
National Jersey Show Judge, and one of the standout figures in this year’s celebrations is Matthew Templeton, a dairy farmer whose journey reflects the very best of what IDW represents. Matthew, alongside his wife Nicola, daughters Geri and Harlie, and parents Bruce and Jan, operates View Fort Holsteins & Jerseys in Victoria, Australia. The family farm boasts 350 cows in production and over 600 head on the property. By combining a focus on cow families with high type and a dedication to strong maternal lines, Matthew has built a herd that exemplifies both Australian and international excellence.
In 2024, the Templeton family expanded their operations by acquiring a new farm, positioning View Fort Holsteins & Jerseys for continued growth and innovation. Matthew’s expertise is rooted in his extensive experience as a professional cattle fitter, which took him across Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Canada, Brazil, and Germany. During his career, he prepared some of the most high-profile cows in the world, including Supreme Champions at the prestigious World Dairy Expo. Now firmly established on his own farm, Templeton takes pride in showcasing cattle from his herd, which has produced four Supreme Champions at IDW.
Templeton’s accomplishments extend beyond his own enterprise. In August 2024, he became the first Australian to judge the Wisconsin Championship Show for both the Holstein and Jersey breeds. This milestone is part of a distinguished judging career that includes roles at the Ontario Summer Show, World Dairy Expo, and numerous Royal Shows across Australia and New Zealand. His contributions also include serving as Overall Judge for the Australia-wide On Farm Competition and as an All-Australian judge for the National Photographic Competition, further cementing his contribution in the dairy industry.
Geoff takes the Reigns
Jersey Australia’s new president Geoff Akers is excited about taking on the role at one of the most exciting times in the breed’s history.
Geoff replaces Lisa Broad who has resigned from the board for personal reasons but remains committed to the future of the breed.
It has been a busy time for the Tallygaroopna dairy farmer who runs the Loxleigh Jersey stud with his wife Natalie and family. He was also recently elected to Greater Shepparton Council but he is keen to continue his commitment to Jerseys and the dairy industry, which includes being a former Dairy Australia chairman among many other leadership and governance roles in the industry.
Geoff joined the Jersey Australia board in 2021 and is keen to play a role in promoting the breed.
“We will continue to move the Jersey cow forward and look for strategic opportunities that arise for the organisation and for any opportunities to work with others in the registered herd sector,” he said.
Hosting the World Jersey Conference in April 2024 will be an exciting opportunity to showcase Australian Jerseys to the world. “We already have registrations coming in and look forward to this being a major event in advancing our local breed,” Geoff said.
“The Australian Jersey cow stacks up very well compared to any other country, which is being shown in the positive stories we hear about the Australian cow from overseas.
“We’ve got a number of Australian Jersey bulls being used around the world and their daughters are making a very positive mark.”
He paid tribute to Lisa, who was the first female JA president. “Lisa has shown exceptional leadership over the past three and a half years,” he said. “She brought many new strategic ideas to the organisation and put in place a number of governance principles to make sure the organisation is in a good place.
“Lisa was always on the lookout for new opportunities and recently oversaw the successful revamping of the classification system, which has been well received.”
Geoff has been elected until the 2025 annual general meeting and Tasmania’s Jane Sykes has been elected vice president.
Geoff and Natalie have been farming at Tallygaroopna in northern Victoria since 1993 and currently milk about 770 Jerseys and 80 crossbreds. They were among the first Jersey Australia Master Breeder inductees in 2023.
New Classifiication System
The implementation of the new classification system has gone ok with a few technical issues being struck which caused some lost data and slow services. Despite the challenges, throughout the first 3 weeks in November, we did score close to 3,000 cows through the system as well cows that were inspected and not moved. I do acknowledge the role of the classifiers and members to push through some longer days to get the work done and thank them for working with us to complete the classification requirements.
Through these challenges we had great support Goldstar who took on all feedback on the system and by the end of the 1st week, had released 3 updates which improved the function and process time significantly.
What we are seeing to date from the new class system are the following:
• Greater consistency in the classification score from linear to final score
• Greater consistency in the classification scoring between classifiers.
• Significant reduction in the administration and management of the classification tours and data flow between the classification system and the databased.
We will undertake a review of the new system outcomes at the completion of the Spring class period however we do think it is proactive to share with members some of the data and answer some questions that are already being raised.
Q: Older cows are being rewarded for additional lactations?
A: This is incorrect. The Association has had in place score maximum for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Lactation cows for many years. This remains in place in the new system as the only lactation driven control in the scoring process. The cows score can only be driven by her linear and any penalties due to defects and receives no reward for additional lactations.
Q: Is is harder to get younger cows in their 1st and 2nd lactation to maximum score?
A: Yes, it is harder. The most common feedback that we receive on classification was that we were overscoring particularly of younger cows. While we have seen a decline of the % of cows reaching maximum scores over the last 3 years, our annual assessment of the data indicates that cows have been cows achieving maximum score who do not have the linear to justify the given score. While we never set out to deliberately score cows lower, we did aim to achieve a system that scored cows with a high correlation from its linear to final score which we have achieved.
A cow must be perfect to ideal to achieve maximum score at 1st. 2nd, 3rd or 4 plus lactations. This is fundamentally the concept of a linear classification with a designated ideal for linear.
We have recorded cows at maximum score for 1st, 2nd and 3rd lactation so there is clear evidence that cows can achieve maximum score.
Classification Data
The following graphs show cow data from 2,775 cows scored in November. The data shows a good score spread and an expected bell curve on 1st lactation cows and a typical graph for 2nd lactation and above when a more selective approach on cows presented for classification is seen.
TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE MemberStory
What could be better than having one high-ranking Jersey stud on your farm? What about having two?
Riverlane Dairy is home to both Rivendell and Brunchilli Jersey studs, bringing together some of the best cow families in the country.
Both herds will be on show for the 2025 World Jersey Conference tour in April and business partners David Boyd and Stew Menzies are keen to be part of the itinerary.
Riverlane was formed in 2021, bringing together generations of cow-breeding excellence, with Stew a fourth-generation farmer and David the third generation in the industry.
David had been working on the Menzies family farm and their Rivendell Jersey herd in Numbaa on the Shoalhaven River flats in his early 20s. His family was farming their Brunchilli Jersey herd in the Southern Riverina at Finley but, in a change of direction, moved their cows to the Menzies property in 2016.
Through succession planning, Stew bought out his parents (Bruce and Gail) and in 2021 gave David the opportunity to buy into the business after his parents (Maurice and Lyn) sold their Finley farm.
They now peak at 800-850 milkers on the home 196-ha milking platform. It is a predominately pasture-based farm system at Numbaa equipped with a modern 50-bale rotary, feed pad and two centre pivot irrigators utilising recycled water from a nearby town. They also run an additional 550 head across five leased properties with 140-ha of land nearby to run dry stock and grow corn and forage crops to supplement the milking herd and a further 488-ha property at Gundagai to raise young stock.
The enterprise produces more than five million litres of milk annually, with a per-cow average nearing 7000 litres. It was a platinum production herd in 2023 and they sell Jersey branded milk directly into Sydney, taking great pride in the outstanding quality record of low somatic cell count, bacterial counts and high milk components.
While it’s not uncommon for herds to be merged onto one property, it is unusual for two fully fledged studs to continue operating in tandem.
But Stew says the transition was seamless.
“I had my own stud and then Dave’s came in but it wasn’t difficult to merge them together and keep our own prefix,” he said. “They were registered under two different stud names and continued that way. I guess it is unusual but they are effectively run under one banner under different stud names.”
The partners don’t look at it as a friendly inter-stud rivalry but rather as a bigger team. “At the end of the day, they’re all owned by the business partnership Riverlane Dairy,” Stew said.
Rivendell and Brunchilli’s most successful cow families include Vera, Tammy, Priscilla, Maybelle, Violet, Passion, Noelene, Eileen and the Vita, all excellent cow families that have produced many champions and Excellent daughters. Today, the herd has more than 150 Excellent classified cows.
Before their amalgamation, both Rivendell and Brunchilli had enjoyed great success in the show ring with a long history of championships, premier breeder and exhibitor titles at International Dairy Week, Sydney Royal Easter Show, Melbourne Royal, NSW Jersey State Show and local shows spanning nearly two decades.
More recent achievements include Supreme Champion Sydney Royal Easter Show 2019, Reserve Junior Champion and HM Intermediate Champion of IDW 2023, Supreme Champion NSW State Show 2023, Intermediate Champion NSW State Show 2023, Great Northern On-Farm Challenge Champion and Great Australian On-Farm Challenge 3-yearold winner 2023, Junior and Reserve Junior Champion NSW State Show 2024 and Reserve and HM Senior Champion NSW State Show 2024. And recently took home the winning 5-year-old Great Northern Challenge title.
In 2023, Rivendell and Brunchilli hosted the Royal Rendezvous Sale at Sydney Royal Easter Show where 40 head were exhibited and shown before being auctioned live at Sydney Showgrounds. The sale averaged $8308, with Rivendell Gentry Cleo achieving the highest price of $28,000 and going on to win Reserve Champion cow the following year at Sydney Royal with her new owners.
Doubling the herd had its challenges, but things have worked out well. “We’re a grazing operation supplemented by partial mixed ration,” Stew said. “Once the numbers go up, you’ve got to supplement the feed with something.”
There were about 400 cows on the farm before the merger. “When it’s good, it’s good, but when it’s not so good and you’ve got more cows, you’ve got to be organised and get your head around things a bit quicker.”
Luckily, this season has been very good and the partners are looking forward with confidence.
“We’ll just continue on doing what we’re doing,” Stew says.
“We’re only two hours from Sydney so I think our milk will always be in demand.”
Having two stud masters on the one farm brings different perspectives, but they share a similar breeding focus on high type and production cows, balanced with good udders and longevity.
David says both he and Stew are on the same page when it comes to the herd breeding and management.
“My breeding goals are pretty much aligned with Stew’s,” he said. “We’re both striving for the same outcome and don’t take two different breeding approaches with the studs.
“We are fortunate to have a very uniformed herd, and we want to keep our breeding objectives and continuity of the herd the same.”
They use sires that will continue to improve each generation. North American genetics have been influential part in their breeding program over the years.
Many of the foundation cows in the Rivendell and Brunchilli herd stemmed from the use of Lester Sambo in the early 2000s, Rapid Bay Genetics in Canada while today, Valentino, Victorious, Air and Virtuoso, are the most prominent sires in the herd and young stock.
“We’re breeding a nice type, functional cow that is productive and trouble - free,” Stew said.
“I guess that’s everyone’s goal.”

BEST IN THE WORLD
Jersey cows have taken Con and Michelle Glennen to all parts of the world, so it’s only fair that they return the favour.
Con and Michelle will open their White Star Jerseys at Noorat in south-west Victoria for the World Jersey Conference Tour in April 2025.
Visitors will get to see a highly productive commercial herd that sits number one in the country for Balanced Performance Index, Health Weighted Index, Sustainability Index and Australian Selection Index.
In the December 2024 ABV release, White Star Jerseys was the top BPI and SI herd in the breed with a BPI of 270 and a SI of 577.
Con and Michelle’s love of Jerseys and desire to have the best possible commercial herd have led them to Denmark, Sweden, USA, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and Ireland to look at cows and genetics that might best suit their business.
But when asked which of the countries has the best Jersey cows, Con doesn’t have to look at his passport. “Australia,” is his blunt answer. “Australian Jerseys are world class and it’s time the world saw more of them.”
Fresh from joining the Jersey Australia trade mission to the 2024 World Dairy Conference, Con and Michelle say they haven’t changed their minds about Australia having the best Jerseys.
“We found the American Jersey is narrow in the face, neck and shoulders, though they improve greatly after that point,” Michelle says.
Con recently returned from New Zealand and liked the shape of their cows but found their genomic system too restricted. “They are a long way behind us on the genomic information,” he said. “It’s very hard to work with those herds because you don’t know what you’re getting.”
Con and Michelle say that genomics have had a huge impact on their herd and they continue to meticulously study the data.
“We very much individually mate,” Michelle said. “Con will sit down with the females and I’ll sit down with the males on DataVat and we’ll check the points all the way through and decide what sounds good and if it doesn’t, we move on and pick another bull.”
“The Australian genomic data set is as good if not better than anything in the world, and the access to it is unrivalled anywhere in the world,” Con adds.
Michelle adds that the data is essential for decisions on culling and health treatments.
The Glennens started as an original Ginfo herd, provided tissue samples and herd records for some of the original genomic research work and the whole herd is herd tested 12 times a year.
They also use activity collars for health and breeding, covering about 60% of the herd with sexed semen, 30% conventional and 10% beef.
They were quick to adopt genomics, just like Con’s predecessors picked up on new technologies.
“We’re always keen to have a look at any new technology,” he said, “but you don't get there in one generation. In our case, it has taken over 100 years of hard work and dedication from generations of family and a passion for the breed.”
Con, who grew up on a dairy farm at The Sisters, moved onto the Noorat farm with his uncles, Con and Jack, in 1992.
Jack and Con senior were doing A.I. in the early 70s, always keep meticulous records and continually herd tested.
The Glennen family has farmed at the foot of Mount Noorat since 1923. Con’s grandparents, Con and Maggie Glennen, bought the original 85 acres where they raised their family of 15. Over 100 years later the property has expanded to a 500-acre milking platform.
The farm is pasture based with a medium to high input system. They milk 400 Jersey cows at home and have 250 acres of out paddocks supporting all herd replacements and growing a large percentage of the herd’s fodder requirements.
Soils types in Noorat range from challenging black flats to rich volcanic soil of which 140 acres is watered by three centre pivots. Milk is supplied to Fonterra on a fresh milk contract with a flat milk curve and cell count under 200,000 a mandatory requirement.
Con and Michelle say that Australia has the best Jersey cows because of the willingness of local farmers to use the best offerings from other countries.
“We can go to Denmark and pick out something that really appeals for one particular trait and then come home and use it,” Con, who is also a Jersey Australia board member, said.
“We were lacking a bit with outcrosses and needed to fix some udder issues and we found that in America. We also wanted to change the front end of the cow and we looked at America.”
They don’t import semen but get it through a variety of local suppliers. “I don’t give a hoot who’s selling it; as long as it’s what I want, I’ll buy it,” Con says.
The Glennens breed and milk along commercial lines, and have never been interesting in showing.
“We just want a good dairy cow,” Michelle said. “I like a well-engineered cow that can walk, has good cell count, gets in calf and makes milk and I really don’t want to know who she is because I don’t want to work that hard with her.
“We want a pen of really good ones that you know nothing about, not a pen you could write War and Peace about because you always have to deal with them.”
The White Star Jerseys stud, named after the White Star Line that bought the family to Australia, was established in 1978 by Con senior and Jack, and their sister Bernadette.
The cows have been traditionally named with the White Star prefix but Con and Michelle are working towards developing families.
Farm Gate Signs
“Basically, at the moment they are White Star and a number, but we’re starting to build families,” Michelle said. “If we recognise the strength of a family line, we will breed with it.”
Visitors to the farm won’t see a herd primed for the show circuit – they’ll see a herd built for commercial production.
Over their decades of farming, Con and Michelle have scoured the world to find the best genetics to develop the herd, but now they mostly look in their own backyard because of their high regard for Australian Jerseys.
While they will select certain top heifers and cows for spotlight on the tour, the whole herd will be there to view. “We don’t like hiding things,” con says. “The whole herd will be there if people want to walk through it.”
“We’ve got top cows but we’ve also got bottom cows - you’re going to get to see the good, the bad, and the ugly,” Michelle adds.
Of course, their successful breeding program means there will be more of the former.

WORLD WIDE SIRES UPDATE
Elevate your herd’s productivity and longevity with the No. 1 sire for JPITM (+189), 14JE01921 JX CRISPIN {5}. He is a toptier Jersey sire known for exceptional health traits, superior daughter fertility, and healthy calves. CRISPIN is a 7JE01758 JX THRASHER {6} son ranking No. 1 in the breed for Herd Health Profit Dollars® (+821 HHP$®) and +$992 DWP$®. He is fertility focused, and his daughters inherit excellent conception rates with +4.0 CCR, giving his daughters higher fertility than STARLORD. Calves sired by CRISPIN are born strong and truly set the stage for future herd success with +$115 CW$TM.
Holding the No. 4 JPITM polled spot, 14JE02294 JX CAPER {5}-P, is the only polled bull that is over +1200 PTAM, 100 CFP, and +17.5 JUITM. He is backed by proven genetics for high production and exceptional daughter fertility at +1.3 HCR and +1.8 CCR. Strong, functional udders are critical for longevity and ease of milking, and CAPER-P sires daughters with sound udders that are built to last. With strong fore udders and shallow udder depth, he’s a great fit for the current polled Jersey population and his outcross pedigree means you can use CAPER-P with confidence.
187JE05751 BERT is the best bull to come out of the Brookbora stud to date. Hailing from the great Charo family, BERT offers genetic solutions to create well-balanced cows. His dam, Aspire Vanahlem Charo EX93, has the width and wedge we expect from Vanahlem, along with the qualityudder from her Action dam. Combine this with his sire Roulette, and you have a powerful pedigree that is built for success. He sires daughters with impeccable udder conformation, promoting udder health and maximizing milk production over the long term (112 OT and 116 MS). Additionally, he is a top sire for BPI (380), HW (364) and SI (791). Take the next step toward increased profitability by incorporating 187JE05751 BERT into your breeding strategy for the complete cow.

SOUTH GIPPSLAND JERSEY BREEDERS CLUB
PRESIDENT: WAYNE KUHNE | SECRETARY: OLIVIA WATSON | TREASURER: ALEX MATHEWS
On the 19th of November the South Gippsland Jersey breeders Club held their Christmas celebrations club day, hosted by the Moscript Family at their new Dairy facility. The club had a lovely day out, with a tour of the new dairy and its impressive facilities and the new calving shed.
The Moscript’s Family farm was established over 60 years ago and is currently owned and operated by Chris, Janine, Callum & Blake Moscript.
The Moscripts have always strived to breed cattle that can adapt with our ever changing farming conditions. They have a strong focus on future proofing the business for its success into the future.
The decision to upgrade the dairy and surrounding sheds was a result of the milkings taking up to 5 hours to complete and their original dairy was falling apart. So, they had to make the decision on whether they were to sell the farm, change to beef or build a new parlor, they chose the latter. Growth to them is such an important way of adding value to the investment.
It was decided that GEA was the best choice for the Moscripts business, so they were employed do the build on the new dairy parlor. GEA have a great local support team. The rotary is fully sealed internal and to us, the GEA Rotary has the best roller system on the market.
It’s also fully integrated with the milking machines and the vat. It’s also nice to know that our team only need one number in their phones for any support.
The new dairy parlor is currently milking 480 cows, but they have designed the facilities to be able to milk however many cows they desire into the future.
When asked if the family has a favourite part of the new set up Callum’s response was.
We don’t have a favourite part; the pleasing thing is that a lot of thought went into the build & to see everything working so well together has been satisfying. Despite not being directly a part of the rotary, the time savings are amazing. They say money doesn’t buy happiness, but it buys time.
The South Gippsland Jersey Breeders Club would like to thank the Moscript Family for allowing the club to come out and explore their new set up, whilst also enjoying a lovely Christmas club day.
Wishing everyone a safe 2025!
HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM ALTA
Alta Genetics are looking forward to being in the Brown and starting 2025 with a great mix of Domestic and North American bulls to meet your needs. The December proof run gave us plenty of confidence in our team.
OUTCROSS sire ALTAFARVA, the current number one JPI genomic bull in the USA at JPI 200, maintains a spot in the top 10 bulls here in Australia at a BPI of 402. Thus, making him ALTA’s highest available BPI bull in the country. He brings a daughter fertility of 104 and has 41kg of FAT. We have sold out of every shipment brought in since August. We are taking pre orders now.
ALTA LION (top) shifted very little with a BPI of 388, solid production increasing his milk and great type OT +110 with outstanding udders Mamm +115. Technically the 2nd Best Udder bull in the breed with RUH 109 and RUW 108.
ALTA IMPERIAL P (middle) Broadway’s highest-ranking son, BPI 355 and the 2nd highest type and udder rated POLLED bull currently available at OT +110, Mam +111. Second only to his sire that is. Alta Imperial certainly doesn’t present like most of the polled sires currently available to use, bringing linears for stature +104, chest width +105 and body depth +105. There are so many things to love about this bull.
ALTA LABRINTH (bottom) BPI 348 adds milk and maintains positive components all the while presenting an extremely balanced linear profile with OT+105, Mam +106. The upward movement we did see was in daughter fertility making him perhaps even more marketable and easier to use at a large scale commercial level.
What is even better in 2025? We now have Sexed semen on both IMPERIAL and LABRINTH available.
We would like to congratulate all of the winners from regional challenges, the Great Northern Challenge and the Great Southern Challenge. It must be noted the quality of all of the daughters of Vanahlem, one of the last graduates of an Alta Domestic Program, that competed across all challenges and more importantly the overall winning and reserve cows from the Great Southern Challenge were both sired by Vanahlem. Vanahlem daughters have featured for years across all challenges and continue to have a huge impact across the breed.
We can only hope to see another bull as hugely influential as Vanahlem has proven to be. With your support and partnership, Alta can continue to developing a program to test more bulls and further increase the global popularity of Australian bred Jerseys.
For more information on any of the bulls at Alta or to submit any pedigrees of interest to our program please reach out to Karin Couch, Alta Genetics Australia, National Jersey Program Manager.
CSCBRADY HOLDS AT THE POINTY END OF THE DEC ABV
RELEASE WITH HIS DAM CLASSIFIED
EX93 MAX
Jersey breeders can continue to have peace-of-mind in knowing that every bull on the market with the ABS label is free of the recognised genetic condition called JH1 fertility-damaging haplotype where is it estimated that more than 25 percent of the Australian Jersey breed now contains the Haplotype.
“Knowledge is power, once ABS understood the impact that JH1 meant for fertility of adult females - we had to remove all bulls from our offering with our customers having the confidence when selecting ABS bulls” Bruce said. “It’s the responsibility of ABS to ensure our products give farmers the best chance at breeding healthy and productive animals.
Demand for Northern Victorian - bred Jersey bull KAARMONA JERONIMO BRADY (CSCBRADY) hasn’t waned and with the bull sitting at 437 BPI, equal number one for Type in Australia as well as good production and high components - his popularity isn’t going to change anytime soon. He is also the highest Genomic bull (without daughters) above 110 for Type and udders.
CSCBRADY has been on the Australian market for a year now, and ABS Australia Business Operations Manager Bruce Ronalds said he’s delivering what Jersey breeders want.
“Firstly, he enables them to breed for strength, capacity and stature and secondly, he’s stayed constant - on the ABV rankings - other bulls have moved up and down,” Bruce said.
“Thirdly, he’s out of a fantastic cow family. His dam was recently scored 93 - a maximum for her age - and this is not the first time she’s received the maximum score.
She is one of a kind”
An ABS-bred bull, from the US, ABS MARINE-ET is 390 BPI with 63 daughters milking across 10 herds. A high component, high milk and teat lengthening sire, MARINE is available sexed as part of the Sexcel® range.
MURRAY BROOK JAMIEO (CSCJAMIEO) remains at number four on the Jersey ABV proven list with 104 Temperament, 106 Likeability and 113 daughters milking in Australia.
Single P - heterozygous polled- bull BALNAGEITH JANGO P (CSCJANGO), 359 BPI, is the number one polled Jersey in Australia. CSCJANGO also has high survival - 113 - and is a high milk bull, delivering 768 litres a lactation more than the population average. Another US bull, ABS AVJ JUICED-ET still stands strong, adds teat length to daughters, is positive for Daughter Fertility and scores well for both type and udders.
