World Dairy Expo... It was another successful visit to World Dairy Expo and we continue to build the support and opportunity for Australia Jerseys in the North American market place. The interest through the trade site this year was different to last year and we had a stronger direct farm interest calling in through the week. One of the key interests was a multi farm operation focusing on grazing and A2 with around 20,000 cows across the various properties. With a strong presence of Australian sires through the ring with bulls like BONTINO, ASKN & FERDINAND featuring as the sire of many entries, there is no doubt the opportunity for Australian Jersey genetics is high across the varying sectors of the dairy industry. It was also exciting to support Genetics Australia with a presentation to the Genex Group and their South American network. This was a well-attended presentation, and we trust these promotions lead to greater export of Australian Jerseys into these markets.
Best Regards,
Glen Barrett

AUSTRALIAN DAIRY YOUTH - UPDATE Around the Grounds
Dairy Youth Academy
In September, 17 young dairy professionals came to Melbourne for the Inaugural Australian Dairy Youth Academy. It was terrific to see participants come from far north Queensland to Tasmania for the 3-day event which covered topics such as nutrition, genetics, dairy careers and more. The program provided the participants a significant opportunity to come together to not just to learn and enhance their skills but to develop a strong camaraderie with a peer group of likeminded young dairy professionals.
The most positive feedback that we have is the desire from the group to continue to engage as a group which we will ensure that we make opportunities to provide follow up programs and most importantly ensure that as an industry we strive to meet what is their most significant identified challenge of isolation. If creating new ongoing personal and professional friendships was our most significant achievement them, Australian Dairy Youth have certainly been able to do a very good thing.
IDW Youth Challenge
Australian Dairy Youth will be submitting a team in the upcoming Youth Challenge at IDW in January. If you would like to be part of the team please let us know by emailing AustDairyYouth@outlook.com

2025 World Jersey Conference LAUNCHED IN THE US
Australia’s hosting of the 2025 World Jersey Conference has been officially launched in the United States.
Jersey Australia general manager Glen Barrett and board member and promotions chair Jane Sykes were joined by premium sponsor Genetic Australia’s export manager Rob Derksen to launch the event at the World Dairy Expo in Madison Wisconsin.
The conference looks set to create great interest, with thousands of views of the launch video.
Australia will be hosting the conference for the first time since 2011. It will start in Melbourne on April 6th and finish at the Royal Sydney Show Jersey judging on April 21st.
It is hoped up to 100 international guests from Europe, North and South America, New Zealand and Asia are expected to join local Jersey farmers on the tour.
Speaking at the World Dairy Expo, Jersey Australia general manager Glen Barrett said hosting the tour was a great opportunity to showcase the Australian Jersey cow and build on strong global marketing over the past three years, including a site at the World Dairy Expo.
“The campaign has had a very positive impact and we have seen that interest in our jerseys at World Dairy Expo this year, including a number of animals in the ring and in Jersey sales sired by Australian bulls,” Mr Barrett said.
“It’s important to capitalise on that work and bring global breeders to Australia and show the strength of our Jerseys and our local industry.”
An itinerary has been developed and will take visitors through Victoria’s dairy regions and the NSW south coast, including the Central Gippsland Jersey Autumn Fair.
“They will visit some of our premier herds, including Master Breeder herds and the number one Jersey merit herd along with some newer herds who will be showcased for the first time,” Mr Barrett said.
“This as a celebration of Australian Jerseys, with a strong focus on Australian cow families and sires.”
The conference was last held here in 2011 when Australia stepped in after the tsunami hit original host Japan. It had been planned to return to Australia in 2021 but was deferred because of COVID-19. This year the conference is in Denmark and it was held in Guatemala in 2023 and in Kenya and Rwanda in 2022.
Domestically, Jersey numbers have been increasing year-on-year and Jerseys now account for more than 15 per cent of the national herd, up from 10.5 per cent 15 years ago.
Mr Barrett predicted that interest in local Jerseys would spike after the conference.
“Bringing international Jersey breeders here to see first-hand the high-quality cattle we’re breeding from high-quality Australian bulls will definitely benefit our local industry,” he said.
“The conference rotates around the world and we think we have the best Jersey cows in the world so we wanted to showcase them. There is certainly a growing market for Australian Jersey heifers and Australian genetics and this will be a great opportunity for Australian businesses to support the event and promote their Jersey genetics and products to the world.”
The World Jersey Cattle Bureau represents Jersey breeders, and their organisations, around the world. There are five world regions of the Bureau - Africa, Asia/Oceana, Europe, Latin America and North America. World conferences have been held since 1949.
A local committee is being formed to support the conference tour planning.
Jane Sykes launch the 2025 World Jersey Conference at World
Expo in Madison, Wisconsin.
Vale CHARLES “ROGER” BRERETON
Roger Brereton of Isycoed Jerseys spent his life on the family dairy farm on Gunbower Island, where the Brereton family farmed for 130 years. Known for his deep love of the land and his Jerseys, Roger’s passion for dairy farming was evident from an early age. At just 15, he left school to work alongside his parents, Charlie and Lila Brereton. Roger was an earlier embracer of reproductive technologies. He was among the first in the Northern area to adopt herd testing. In the 1990s, he made a significant investment by importing Canadian embryos which produced two heifers, Jenny and Charo. Charo’s line became a cornerstone of the Isycoed herd.
Roger’s passion for his Jerseys was rewarded in 2008 when Isycoed Fairy, a two-year old heifer, won the prestigious Jersey Australia Great Southern Challenge 2 Yr Old Champion, a proud achievement for both Roger & Elaine. Isycoed Fairy's lineage was bred up through the Genetic Recovery Scheme, producing great cattle that Roger always took pride in.
Rogers greatest wish was to milk cows until the day he passed. Fittingly, on the morning of his passing, he spent his final morning milking cows with his son Kurt & his wife Melanie who now carry on the Isycoed name. Known for his warmth, dedication, and an active role in the Northern District Jersey Breeders Club, Roger’s legacy will live on through his family, his beloved Jerseys, and the memories he created on the land he cherished. Now Reunited with Elaine.

DEEP HISTORY ON DISPLAY
When it comes to Jersey family farming history, the Salways at Cobargo NSW go deeper than most.
The Salway family has been on the one farm since 1878 and their Wilgo stud has been registered since 1908 - and that deep history shows in their cows.
The herd has been constantly improving and is at its peak in readiness for the World Jersey Conference tour in April 2025.
Aaron and Emma Salway will be showcasing their farm as part of the tour and are excited about what they have to display.
“Hopefully the people will see good functional cows within the breeding goals we’re pushing,” Aaron said. “Hopefully they see what we see in our cows.”
In 1878, the family’s farming tenure started on 300 acres. It has grown to 450 over the decades, though only 350 of those acres are farmed with the rest remaining as native bush, providing an attractive backdrop for visitors.
Aaron and Emma bought the farm 10 years ago from his parents Robert and Janelle. Prior to that they were leasing in partnership for five years.
His brother Tim was originally on the family farm but he bought a neighbouring property, giving Aaron and Emma a chance to return. Tim continues to farm next door.
The farm is supported by a 1400-acre leased block for dry heifers and beef calves.
Aaron grew up on the farm and never pondered taking another career pathway. “It was going to be and meant to be and I’m 100 per cent happy with that,” he said.
He knows he has a long family tradition to uphold. “We’re one of the oldest Jersey studs around. My son Jack, 16, who now works on the farm is the seventh generation in the family business (younger son Riley, 11, is still at school but is also keen on the farming life).”
Farming in the Cobargo area can be tough, but Aaron and Emma love the area. “It’s good enough but it doesn’t rain like it does up the coast,” Emma said. “We’re very seasonal. It can be dry or very wet. Our area is either three weeks from being very good or three weeks from being in drought.”
This season has been closer to the latter. “We’re dry and looking for rain,” Aaron said. “If it rained now, we’d be away, but it’s October 23 and we haven’t made any silage as yet. Spring is yet to arrive.”
They milk 200 - 250 year-round. They also calve year-
round, like most farmers in the region, calving 20 a month. They can’t milk more with an old 10-a-side swingover, built by Aaron’s grandfather as a walk-through, limiting expansion.
Before taking on Jack this year, Aaron and Emma ran the business on their own. The cows keep them motivated with their success in the vat and in the rankings and show circuit.
The whole herd is registered and two of the standout families, Queenie and Countess, are among those dating back to 1908.
One of the Queenie cows has done particularly well. LC Queenie won the Great Northern Challenge in 2016, her daughter Wilgo Sambo Queenie won in 2022 and last year Wilgo Valentino Stevie won All Australian Two-Year-Old. With an 87 classification as a two-year-old, her future looks bright.LC Queenie is one of two Wilgo cows classified Excellent 94, alongside Samson Queenie 2nd.
Samson is now living with the Templeton family in Victoria and has done well in the showring, and they have welcomed a nice heifer out of her.
Wilgo also has three Excellent 93 cows – Crackers Tara, Resurrect Althea and Tequila Dulcie, along with 10 cows at 92 points and many at 90 and 91.
Wilgo has also tasted success at the Sydney and Melbourne shows IDW and Gippsland Jersey Fair and has won multiple local titles.
Another strong family is the Shamrock family, though Aaron and Emma say the Queenies are and stand-outs. “They just keep breeding to our goals,” Emma said. The family breeds for functional, high-milking dairy cows with good udders. “You need a cow that makes money so we need a big wide muzzle with a big body that produces a lot of milk,” Aaron said.
Wilgo Sambo Queenie EX92 Great Northern Challenge Champion '22
“We’re pretty happy with the way our breeding is going at the moment.
We A.I and try to keep a bull out of our own good cows and breed from him. I’ve been brought up to do that and it’s still works and is paying off.
“We use a lot of on-farm Australian bulls and we’re happy with what we’ve achieved with them.
We also use overseas genetics but I think Australian bulls are well up there and getting better and better.
Aaron’s grandfather Keith Salway was the first in the Bega Valley to do embryo transfer work, something Emma and Aaron continue today alongside IVF work.
The Bega Cheese suppliers are happy with the path they’re on, although farming in the district is not without its challenges.
Aaron’s father Robert and brother Patrick died in the 2019 fires. Robert had retired from dairying and had a property 3km away to run some beef.
Aaron and Emma’s farm was caught up in the blaze. “We didn’t lose infrastructure or cattle but we lost 90 per cent of the land and fencing. My father and brother died so I was looking after my mother’s farm as well and had to re-fence that and re-fence the dairy. It was a bit of a mission for a while. It was one of those freak things that happen.

SUCCESSFUL SWAP
A
decision by Darryn Hourigan’s father to swap a pony for three Jersey cows continues to pay off for the family.
Darryn will display the fruits of his father’s foresight when the family hosts a visit during the World Jersey Conference tour in April 2025.
The swap may have turned the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale upside down, but the cows proved to be every bit as worthwhile as magic beans.
Darrynvale Jerseys is a 1400-acre dairy and beef operation, milking 300 cows on the highly fertile soils of the Ovens River Flood Plains in Milawa, North East Victoria, owned and operated by Darryn. His partner Rochelle along with Darryn’s son Bailey and daughter Ellie (pictured below) are involved in the day-to-day running of the farm. Bailey and Ellie also work off farm in other agricultural industries while daughter Grace is a social worker at Wangaratta Hospital.
Darryn’s father Keith and mother Maureen established the Darrynvale Jersey Stud in 1970, naming it after recently- born Darryn.
Keith came from very modest beginnings, losing his father at a young age. He married Maureen in 1951 and they decided to go dairying on small acreage.
To begin the dairying journey, Keith swapped his Pinto pony for three Jersey cows. “That’s how he started his love of Jerseys,” Darryn said.
In the early years Maureen milked 20 cows by hand and Keith went shearing. Keith’s desire to grow led him to purchase a farm in Milawa in the early 1960s which is where Darrynvale Jerseys is situated today.
When Keith passed away, his children continued his legacy, growing the farms with hard work and pure determination to about 7,000 acres and milking around 1,400 cows, as well as running beef enterprises.
Darryn’s brothers, Brian and Trevor, have continued in the dairy industry with their farms located close to Darrynvale. Brian and his sons Joel and Ben milk 700 commercial cows and Trevor and his daughter Amie and son Patrick milk 340 Holstein cows. Brothers Paul and Michael run beef operations and sister Denise works in aged care.
Today Darryn milks 300 cows, on 260 acres comprising of a split calving herd, 50/50 spring-autumn. Young stock are run and fodder is produced on Darrynvale’s second and third farms at Tarrawingee and Byawartha.
Darrynvale is a platinum production herd and regularly achieves more than 7,000 litres average, with some cows producing up to 11,000 litres.
The cow families can be traced back to the renowned Elenko, Warrick and Tecoma studs.
In the early 1980s, Keith ventured to New Zealand and invested in Big Hollow and Merriland genetics over a 10- year period. One of the families he invested in was the world- renowned Daisy family.
The Daisy family has an enormous influence in the herd today with very deep pedigrees, including cows up to 12 generations Excellent. Merriland Silver Satin (imp) went on to be classified Sup-93 points and won numerous championships.
Darryn has continued to breed stud Jerseys with award winning cows with deep pedigrees. Merriland Siver Satin’s great-great granddaughter, DV Tequila Satin (EX-92) went on to win Junior Champ at IDW, winner of the Great Southern Challenge and All Australian 2-year-old.
DV Jim Satin (Ex-92), won her class in the Central Gippsland On Farm Challenge on three occasions for co-owners Ellie Hourigan and Reece and Toni Attenborough.
DV Whiskey Josephine (Ex-92) won the Great Southern Challenge Champion 3-year-old, 2009. She was purchased by Kaarmona Jerseys and has established a reliable family.
Another family that dominates Darrynvale is the Joans, which originated from Elenko in the late 1960s, with DV Vanahlem Joan 2 (Ex-91) was awarded Champion 3-year-old and 4-year-old Great Southern Challenge and All Australian 3-year-old, 2016.
Another family member DV Vanahlem Joan (Ex-91) has produced up to 11,000 litres, the highest milking cow in the herd at present. Her Casino son has just been purchased by Salter & Griffiths.
The Bonnie family has also originated from the Elenko Stud back in the 60s with DV Marks Bonnie 15, (Ex- 92) Junior Champion at the Shepparton Show and Intermediate Honorable Mention at IDW
DV Bhama Favour (Ex-93) was awarded 3, 4 and 5-year-old Champion in the Great Southern Challenge and was overall Reserve Champion Cow on two occasions, also originating from the Merriland stud (N.Z).
Darrynvale is a highly classified herd and Darryn believes classification is an important tool.
He has classified consecutively for about 35 years and cows are classified twice a year for breeding and commercial purposes. Genomic testing is another tool that Darrynvale is using.
In the herd there are 100 cows classified at 90 points and 40 at 91 points and above.
Because it is a pasture-based operation, Darryn believes in breeding dairy cows for Australian conditions that have strength and the ability to walk long distances.
Bulls that have had a major influence at Darrynvale in the early years Linmore Banners Fairlane (N.Z), O’Bon (N.Z), Action, Vanahlem, Valentino and Casino.
“We like to use bulls with strong maternal lines, with positive traits for fat and protein, type, stature and fertility as well as polled sires,” he said.
Sires in use at Darrynvale at present are Impeccable, Casino, Roulette, Invincible, Broadway and Bashful. Broadway and Bashful have been used extensively, with Bashful’s daughters looking very good.
Darrynvale regularly sells lines of cows and heifers, and usually sells between 25-30 bulls annually.
Due to workload, Darrynvale is limited in showing but fully supports and continues to be involved in the On Farm Challenge, describing it as a great concept. Darrynvale has
recently been awarded Goulburn Murray & North East Cattle Club On Farm Challenge Champion Cow 2024.
Darryn is still very passionate about breeding Jersey cows after all these years. He has been president of the North East Cattle Club for the past 25 years and enjoys judging the On Farm Challenge and shows which have taken him far and wide meeting other passionate jersey breeders.

AUSTRALIAN GENETICS TO LAUNCH INTO LATIN AMERICA
Australian genetics are set to launch into Latin America with a new campaign to highlight the success of the country’s grazing systems.
The ‘Best Mate’ campaign launched by GENEX and URUS on October 4 at World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin USA will target a number of Latin American countries including Uruguay, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Ecuador and with a particular emphasis on Argentina.
The new campaign is a successful outcome of the joint venture between URUS, GENEX and Genetics Australia that was formalised in 2023.
Speaking at the launch in Madison, Genetics Australia export manager Rob Derksen said Latin American countries mostly graze their cattle in a similar system to Australia but didn’t know a lot about the success of Australian genetics.
“The only grazing systems many know about is New Zealand but we feel our product is better suited to these regions as farmers use similar systems to Australia and rely on pastures plus supplements as the main source of feed.”
Genetics Australia has started the push with recent exports to Chile and upcoming sales to Peru and Ecuador.
“This is our first international exposure of our Australian genetics as part of the joint venture,” Mr Derksen said. “We believe there is a good market there with substantial room for expansion, particularly through the networks that have been created through the joint venture with URUS,” he added.
“Getting the most productivity from grazing systems starts with the right genetics and Genetics Australia is uniquely placed to help farmers in Latin America to breed a better grazing herd,” he added.
Australian farmers Con and Michelle Glennen from White Star Jerseys in Noorat in south-west Victoria and Sandra Bacon from Brookbora Jerseys from Tennyson in Northern Victoria also presented at the launch along with Jersey Australia general manager Glen Barrett.
Speaking at the launch, URUS Chief Operations Officer Kevin Muxlow said the world needs cow to do more with less to feed a growing population.
“We believe genetics are a key part of making a better cow and that better cows contribute to a better world,” Mr Muxlow said.
Genetics Australia has joined Jersey Australia and other Australian companies on a joint site at World Dairy Expo over the past three years.
Alta Genetics were also part of the URUS company, were part of the launch at World Dairy Expo. This was the first presentation of its type conducted by Genetics Australia at World Dairy Expo and featured video of Brookbora, White Star, Ravens Hill Australian Reds and Tesbury Holsteins.
Mr Derksen said the event created a lot of interest from multiple countries.
“We want the world to know that we achieve high productivity cows suited to diverse grazing systems that can go the distance with strong feet and legs, have excellent feed efficiency and are reproductively sound.
Australian Genetics has a lot to offer and I’m sure as more counties experience how our genetics perform we can expect growing demand, he said.

Advanced Cow Monitoring from Alta Genetics
The Alta COW WATCH system has allowed us to get more flexibility into our operation. We can see who is on heat and the drafting system just drafts the cows for us. We can go out there and the cows are ready to join. It’s taken a lot of consumables out when it comes to heat detection such as paints and scratchies. Also takes out the chances of missed heats by manual detection as a missed heat comes at a cost to our business, and the Alta COW WATCH collars eliminate that. It is important we see every heat , and that we join for every heat and that is how we are getting the biggest return on the system.
Leading into joining we get to see if the individual cows are having good strong heats at good intervals. If cows are missing heats we can look closer at those cows and look for health issues. With that knowledge, we can put those cows into specialised programs to ensure we aren’t missing a pregnancy. We are getting a lot of value from the collars with getting the mating times right and days in milk is also another big factor. For us heat detection & detecting health issues is very valuable. The service provided has been great with Alta, the team came and installed all the Alta COW WATCH collars, and educated us about the data collection as well.
even better.

PROVEN OUTCOMES MAKE ALTA COW WATCH STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD
KEEPING cows healthy, acting early on health alerts, improving pregnancy rates and overall herd health are only some of the benefits of Alta’s COW WATCH system.
This incredible technology allows farmers to get a better understanding of each cow’s activities, health and habits, performance trends, and pinpoint the perfect time for artificial insemination (AI) – all information that directly relate to a herd’s profitability.
When purchasing a new system, Alta will send a team of experts to take care of the initial installation and put the collars on the cows, before entering the paperwork and collars into a customer’s herd management software.
With an average battery life of 10 years, and a made-to-order system, Alta has the lowest failure rate of around 0.7 per cent for the lifetime of the collars.
After using Alta COW WATCH for just over 12 months, Riverina Milk noted a direct return on investment, with healthier cows and increased pregnancy rates.
Milking 2,000 cows, three times a day, Riverina Milk runs a professional 24-hour milking system and is one of the largest dairies in Australia.
Using the easy-to-use Alta COW WATCH dashboard, Riverina Milk was able to monitor reproduction, and target its AI, reducing the use of hormones.
“With our collars during our working day we’re able to pick up our heats,” Brydee Skeen, Riverina Milk, New South Wales said.
“We’re able to AI cows every day now, rather than putting them through a program and using hormones.
“We’ve been able to save time on doing shots which has also saved us money. We’re able to just let them be and we can tell when they’re on heat now.”
With an overall goal to have healthier cows and increasing reproduction, Ms Skeen said the Alta COW WATCH collars had them on the right track.
“The collars have been good to pick up when cows have been sick. The information we get about eating and ruminating from Alta COW WATCH is whether they have increased in activity, or they’ve decreased their eating time,” she said.
“We’ve then been able to draft off those cows and have a look at them and determine what is wrong with them.
“We do pick up quite a few cows that have digestive issues and we never would have been able to pick that up, so that’s amazing.
“We want to work more towards having healthy cows and getting cows pregnant and the collar system will help us do this.”
Combining an unmatched range of features in a single and highly advanced, yet easy-to-use system, there are no ongoing service or support fees with Alta’s system. The quoted price is all customers would pay.
Alta Genetics’ Operations and Alta COW WATCH Manager, Jayde Lee said the ongoing support on-farm or over the phone from her team was a huge point of difference with the Alta product. “It gives our farmers peace of mind, knowing there is always someone they can call when they need support or guidance with the system. We know the system, but we also know cows – which provides reassurance to our farmers that they have partnered with a team that can help them understand the data and achieve great results across their herd.”
Focused on reproduction and getting cows pregnant, the Alta COW WATCH system has had proven impact across Australia, with more efficient herds, improving fertility, reduced semen usage, and has led to healthier cows, and increased milk production.

Farnborough Jerseys
2024 celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Farnborough Jersey Stud, which has been owned by four generations of the Kingham family with sisters Joanne Brownscombe and Meagan Kingham currently co-owners.
Joanne and Meagan's grandfather and great grandfather formed a partnership in 1949 to purchase 93 acres of Bunyip River frontage at Longwarry North. Further land was purchased and in addition to a lease block, the property now milks 170 cows plus replacements. As the farm passed down the generations, their father Rex and mother Liz then bought out Rex's siblings and owned the farm outright, with Liz passing in 2007 and Rex more recently in 2020.
The name "Farnborough" comes from the district in Berkshire in south east England that the family originates from. The Kingham family has lived and worked in Melbourne's eastern suburbs during all this period and have employed sharefarmers to manage the farm. Currently Joanne and her husband Simon live at Sunbury but travel back to the farm frequently when time permits, whilst Meagan locally lives in Longwarry.
Jerseys were chosen due to the influence of a neighbour in Canterbury. The original purchases were of a bull and a number of cows from the Ercildoune Jersey Stud of Fred MacClean at Harkaway (near Berwick). Amongst these was Ercildoune Junette, with only one remaining Junette today within the herd Joanne and Meagan have plans to work with her to build the family back up.
Only 3 different sharefarmers were on the farm in the first 60 years. Ronnie Kamoen is currently running the operation. Ronnie is a Holstein man and has about 55 black and whites with the balance the stud Jerseys. Like a lot of Holstein farmers Ronnie has been surprised by the productivity and competitiveness of Farnborough jerseys and is rapidly becoming a Jersey enthusiast.
The Black Saturday bushfires in 2009 impacted the farm with the loss of fodder and fencing. Luckily no shedding or housing was lost and only one animal was killed.
Since taking the reins, Joanne and Meagan, with a massive help and guidance from Simon, have had a fourth cow shed installed since the family has owned the farm. The old 5 aside herringbone has been replaced by a 20 aside swingover. Currently laneways and refencing are occurring to improve the property and a Cow ID system is a main focus in the future.
The emphasis since Rex's illness and passing has been on consolidating the business.
Breeding advice has been provided by Leading Edge Genetics. It is intended to enter some cows in the Central Gippsland Jersey Club's On Farm Challenge this year. The club is very grateful to Joanne for offering to be our secretary and is in her second year in this position.
All of us in the club wish the sisters all the best with this endeavour.
Simon, Joanne, Chloe (Daughter), Jessica (Daughter) & husband Ryan and Ben (Son)
