From the Front Desk

As we prepare to head to World Dairy Expo, it's good to stop and reflect on our journey. From our first visit in 2022 to this years third trip where we'll be hosting and supporting a trade site, we've made significant strides in achieving our goals and ambitions.

We commenced this to build on the increasing interest in Australian Jerseys in the North American and other global markets and while we had good interest and site traffic through the week in 2022, 2023 was a remarkable positive difference. While a change of site location from year 1 to 2 put at what can be describe as nearly the best location for a trade site, the interest and traffic through the site was intense and provided great justification for the time and investment we committed to.

I foresee the North American market as a 100,000 straw a year opportunity for Australian Jerseys and to achieve this, there no doubt the key drive and responsibility to reaching a sales target of this magnitude resides within the AI companies, you the Breeder and we here at Jersey Australia need to continue to ensure we keep the Australian Jersey as the pinnacle Jersey population around the globe by maintaining strong breeding programs, be strong and courageous in making the key decisions on that benefit the breed more than your individual breeding programs and support what we have and what we do throughout Australia and across the globe to maximise the opportunities for Australian Jerseys.

The numbers of Australian bulls entering AI and an ever-expanding number of AI companies adding Australian Jerseys to their product suite is testament to the growing strength of the Australia Jersey both for our domestic market and no doubt to meet growing export opportunities. The graph shows the % of Australian bulls entering NASIS by year of birth. Australian bull numbers are starting to reach density targets not seen since the pre genomic days of progeny test.

Best Regards,

POPULAR JERSEYS ON SHOW

Darien and Alex Mathews will have some of Australia’s top-classified cows on show when the World Jersey Congress visits their southern Victorian farm in 2025.

But if Jerseys weren’t so popular at the moment, they might have had more to display alongside their 95 and 94-classified stars.

After being on a road of share-farming and leasing, Darien and Alex bought their farm in April 2022 at Mardan, near Leongatha in Victoria’s South Gippsland region.

To buy the land, they needed to sell off some surplus cattle.

“It has been a dream for us to own our own dairy farm,” Alex said. “We had to get bigger and then sell cows and get smaller to own land.”

And that’s where the demand for Jerseys came to the fore.

“When we were downsizing and selling off surplus cows to generate money to buy the farm, there was really high demand for Jerseys, so our ratios are a little bit off now and we have more Holsteins in the herd than what we’ve been after, but the best time to sell a cow is when you have a willing buyer.

“We went into it knowing we had to sell cows and put feelers out for both Holsteins and Jerseys, but the demand was for Jerseys, so that’s what went.

“Now we’re looking to rebuild our Jersey numbers and being more selective with our Holsteins.”

Alex and Darien own part of the 380-acre farm and lease part of it and they also have a 180-acre block 15 minutes away.

They had built up to 520 milkers and young stock but are now milking 300, with about 75 Holsteins, 25 cross-breds and 200 Jerseys.

Darien comes from a strong Jersey background; his parents Trevor Saunders and Anthea Day have Araluen Park Jerseys, while Alex was raised on a predominantly Holstein farm in Guelph Ontario, Canada.

“The Holsteins were introduced when I came along but the focus has always been to have more Jerseys,” Alex said.

While the emphasis on Jerseys partly comes from family tradition, it’s also due to their practical advantages.

“There are a lot of advantages in having cows that don’t weigh as much so when they go into wet paddocks they don’t cause as much damage,” Alex said.

“We also like their efficiency in terms of body weight to solids so we want to keep having a focus on Jerseys.”

Alex has dual citizenship – her mother was Australian-born - and she travelled back and forth between the countries as a youngster before coming here to do agribusiness at Marcus Oldham College.

That led to a full-time job with A.I company Semex as a product support specialist which led to meeting Darien.

Darien, 40, and Alex, 37, have been farming together for 14 years and have two girls keen on the cows and loving the farming life, Ivy 8, and Cassidy 3.

They share a passion for breeding good cows and that’s paying off.

They register and classify both breeds. Langdale was the name of the farm Darien grew up on, while Alex has bought her family’s Walkerbrae prefix from Canada for the Holsteins.

The herd is now in peak condition, reflected by the top classification rankings.

They’ve had a particularly exciting autumn, achieving a 95-point cow (making it one of the best Jersey cows in Australia - there are only two cows ranked higher at 96) and a home-bred 94 pointer.

The 95-point cow – Ascot Park Valentinos Dairymaid (pictured) – was purchased from a dispersal sale six years ago in Queensland as a milking two-year-old.

She has placed in on-farm challenges and classified 93 points a few years ago, but calved in perfect form this year.

“She is the epitome of the cow we’re trying to breed – she’s got a big, wide chest, plenty of strength, big open nostril, wide muzzle, and a great udder with lots of width and capacity,” Alex said. “She’s consistently one of our top performers on herd test and to have a cow that’s beautiful and does all the work is our goal.”

Langdale Valentino Fernleaf was classified 94, continuing the success this branch of the Fernleaf family has had since being owned by Darien’s family from the mid - 1980s.

Her exceptional udder is her standout feature.

“She’s a really tall, big-framed cow and has a beautiful temperament,” Alex said.

Alex admits getting such high scores on the same day was like winning a premiership.

“Breeding the 94-point cow was fantastic but was overshadowed by the 95-pointer on the same day, especially for me because I’ve loved her since the day we bought her.

“Getting a 95-point cow was one of those things on our bucket list. We’d hoped we could do that one day, but you’re never really sure. A heck of a lot of people breed really good cows and don’t get a 95-pointer.”

The cows on show for the World Jersey Congress visit will be their favourites, including the top rankers, with the spotlight shining on Australian genetics.

“There will be a bunch of very highly classified cows from a wide range of Australian cow families,” Alex said. “We don’t have a lot of imported genetics in Jerseys, though we do with our Holsteins.

“We firmly believe that Australia has the best Jersey cow in the world today. We’re very excited about the Jersey cow families that we are working with.”

NEW CLASS SYSTEM ROLLS OUT

The new system to classify Australia’s Jersey herds is set to roll out this spring, giving farmers a better way to see the strengths and weaknesses of their cows.

Under the old system, all linear traits were scored and then the bottom line assessed, referencing the linear traits, before a final score was determined. The new system has moved into four trait groups – mammary system, feet and legs, rump and dairy strength. It will use algorithms and weightings to calculate the trait group score which will automatically calculate the final score.

The weightings on the final score will be dairy strength 40 per cent, mammary 35 per cent, rump 15 per cent, feet and legs 10 per cent.

The new system is designed to be easier to use for classifiers and farmers and to better represent the cow’s major traits.

Jersey Australia general manager Glen Barrett said JA had looked at three main options when deciding on the new classification system - building its own adapting the Holstein Canada system or adapting a system used by Goldstar Genetics.

“Building our own system came with a lot of risk and we found Goldstar linear classification to be an effective and robust system that is user-friendly and the economics stacked up,” Glen said.

“We engaged Goldstar Genetics and they have finalised the adaptions to their pre-existing class system which is based out of South America and used by Colombian Jerseys among others.

“We’ve made some significant adaptions to suit our needs and wants and it’s now ready to be deployed this spring.”

JA’s herd book database, ABRI, recommended the Goldstar system due to its ability to easily connect to the database.

In Colombia a 20-trait system is used but that has been expanded to 24 in Australia.

“They have created automatic algorithms to calculate the trait groups into the final score which is a bit different to the original product but meets our needs and adds extra functionality for our class work,” Glen said.

Trials have identified that 80 per cent of the cows scored over the past three years are likely to be classified the same or within one point under the new system.

Through the trial process, JA has noticed classifiers re-thinking how they see the cow.

“The value of the trait groups is that it allows us to see where the strengths and weaknesses of the cow show out,” Glen said.

“For example, a cow may have a poor udder but may be solid in dairy strength. You can see where the points come from by looking at the trait groups. When they look at the make-up of the trait group scores that lead to that final score, it really points out the strengths and weaknesses which correspond to the linear.”

Most of the cows around the world are scored this way, as are most cows in Australia outside of Jerseys.

“Anyone running mixed breed herds will find this to be a similar process to the Holstein system,” Glen said.

“It is going to be easier to train classifiers because it’s all about the linear and they don’t have to learn about the bottom line and the scoring process will be simplified.”

Importantly, it will save significant time in the transfer of data into the database.

“We will be able to do things that we can’t in the last system,” Glen said. “For example, if a cow doesn’t show up on the Palms we use now, we have to add that cow on paper but the new system can add it electronically.”

They will be greater correlation between linear and final score and cows that score higher points will need to be close to ideal on each linear trait.

But Glen says it’s not about chasing higher scores.

“With the younger cows, it might push the scores a bit lower but we now have all the measurable traits with an ideal range for a young cow through to a mature cow.”

Senior classifier Reece Attenborough said trials had shown the system to be effective and easy to use.

“As a group of classifiers, we’re really happy with what we’ve seen, how the scores come out, how the weightings are done, and the usability of it,” he said. “It has been a work in progress over several years to get it where it is and as a group, we’re very happy with the outcome.

“The four new trait groups and doing away with the old bottom line makes it a lot more transparent between the classifier and the farmer.

“I was comfortable with the old way but you almost had to be a classifier to understand the bottom line and how we worked out the final score. Farmers will better understand the new system which uses better terminology for them to see the strengths and weaknesses.”

Reece said he had received a number of comments from fellow classifiers that they are excited to start using it. “We see it as a great stepping stone to move forward for the classification system.”

Chair of Genetics, Wayne Kuhne, says the new system will have long-term benefits for the Jersey breed.

“There may be things to work through as the classifiers and farmers get used to it but once it’s all up and running, it will be nothing but positives,” Wayne said.

“One of the biggest positives for members will be that the scores and reports they get will be broken down into the four main trait groups,” he said. “That will be a really good improvement for members. It will be totally linear based and that will be a really good improvement.”

Wayne expects it to have benefits across all aspects of the Jersey breed. “It will be easier for the office to download all the data entries; everything will be so much smoother with the new system. The old Palms have served us well but they’re well and truly overdue for an upgrade.”

He also expects it will lead to even better Jersey cows in the long-term. “I think breaking it down and have the linear system brings us into line with other classification systems around the world.”

SHOW RING ETHICS

At the recent All Breed Show Ring Ethics Committee meeting, several reported violations were tabled, some of which the committee applied penalties according to the rules and guidelines of the show ethics code of conduct. These included warnings and suspensions of up to 12-month from showing to exhibiters, fitters and cows.

With what appears to be a growing prevalence of inappropriate practices in the preparations of cows for showing we would like to remind all involved in showing cows, that a win at all cost mentality with little to no regard for the health and wellbeing of the cows you either own or have been entrusted with to prepare for the show will be dealt with appropriately and strongly by the All Breeds Show Ring Ethics Committee. Practices such as:

• The over bagging of cows to the point oedema levels are recorded during udder scanning of 2 and above are considered a major violation in the Ethics guidelines resulting in a minimum 12 - month ban from showing.

• The use of drugs such as oxytocin prior to entering the ring to promote milk flow to the udder is not a permitted use of the drug. The use of oxytocin in this instance is outside of its prescribed purpose and is considered a major violation in the Ethics guidelines and could result in a minimum 12 - month ban.

• The practice of inserting wire into a cow’s nose to provide greater cow control is a banned practice and is considered a major violation in the Ethics guidelines with a minimum 12 - month ban.

• The use of any pumps, hose or tubes to administer fluids to a cow orally on judging day is not permitted unless the animal has a medical condition and is under the care and instruction of a veterinarian, either on the showgrounds or by instruction and guidance from the owner’s local veterinarian.

It was also brought to the attention of the committee that there may be an emerging practice of adding Illicit drugs to a cow’s ration. The committee was astounded by this and will take action to investigate whether this practice is occurring and will not tolerate any person who is found to be providing Illicit drugs to an animal in preparation for a show. A ban of 10 years will be considered along with reporting to the appropriate authority for consideration of legal and/or criminal actions. Showing cows is a valued part of our industry and brings much joy to many. However, there is no blueribbon worthy of putting a cow’s health and wellbeing and ultimately its life at risk to claim the win.

Those involved in the showing of cattle have a duty of care to ensure that inappropriate, illegal and banned practices are not being undertaken when preparing and showing animals. Ensuring the health and wellbeing of the animal is your greatest priority.

Jersey Australia together with other Breed Associations strongly endorse the All Breeds Show Ring Ethics Guidelines and stand strong with the Ethics Committee in endorsing and supporting the actions and penalties applied by the Ethics Committee.

AUSTRALIAN JERSEYS IN AUGUST ABVS – A WORLD CLASS PERFORMANCE

WHILETHE WORLD TOOK NOTICE OF THE STRONG PERFORMANCE OF AUSTRALIAN ATHLETES AT THE PARIS OLYMPICS, THE BREEDING WORLD HAS LONG RECOGNISED THAT AUSTRALIA HAS ONE OF THE BEST POPULATIONS OF JERSEY COWS AND IS AN ELITE SOURCE OF JERSEY GENETICS .

There is no better demonstration of this than in the August release of the Australian Breeding Values. Eight of the top 10 BPIg bulls were Australian standing bulls, headed by Genetics Australia Jersey Brookbora BORUNG. With 86 milking daughters, BORUNG has a BPIg of $465, a Likeability ABV of 108 and is a breed leader for Mastitis Resistance at 111 and Somatic Cell ABV of 169. By Malachi from a 93pt ASKN daughter from the number 4 BPI herd Brookbora Jerseys, it’s no wonder the bull is at the top of the ABV Jersey list. His maternal Grand Sire ASKN has helped pave the way for world recognition of Australian Jerseys, with daughters now milking in many parts of the globe and he has also been used as a sire of sons. BORUNG too, is a sire of sons with AEROGLEN [Borung x Oliver] $368BPIg in the Spring Jersey team.

Wallacedale PICKLE is the tenth highest Jersey at $407 BPIg and has been a popular bull with his legacy growing following each ABV run. In August he has three sons higher than him in the top ten BPIg bulls with two bulls, LONGRUN [Pickle x Got Maid] $429 BPIg at number 3 and DIMORA [Pickle x Matt] $420 BPIg, at number 7. Both bulls are additions to the Genetics Australia team. They are young and semen will be made available as soon as the bulls are consistent donors. Both LONGRUN and DIMORA come from leading number 1 BPI White Star Jerseys, also the home of the number 1 daughter proven bull in DOUGGAN $396 BPI and 99% reliable.

Wallacedale Jerseys, the home of PICKLE, continues to make a significant contribution to the quality of Australian Jersey genetics with a number of bulls in both the GA and TLG Jersey team. The ever-popular STARK PP, TLGEXQUISITE and GOLDBANDP are joined in the Spring catalogue by GADGET [Pickle x Matt], a grandson of the dam of STARK, Wallacedale Tahbilk Madge P EX92. At $339 BPIg GADGET is also the highest mammary improver in the team at 112.

The Jersey team offers a great balance of production with type and it is this combination that sets Australian Jersey apart from all other Jersey populations.

We are also pleased to see TLGSONGSIDE [Woodside x Vanahlem] $352 BPIg enter the TLG Jersey team from Miami Jerseys and to see the first bull into AI for Empire Jerseys in BANKS [Broadway x Matt] $387 BPIg.

Other leading Australia Jersey herds – Kings Ville, Beulah, Loxleigh, Windy Ways, Bushlea, Bercar, Broadlin, Kaarmona and Murray Brook all have bulls in the team and we thank these and all the breeders for their trust in Genetics Australia to make the bulls available in Australia and to the growing list of counties wanting to import Australia Jersey genetics.

WELLNESS TRAITS AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON PROFITABILITY

Zoetis Wellness traits, including mastitis, lameness, and calf wellness, allow dairy producers to build healthier and more productive herds. Mastitis is one of the most prevalent and costly diseases for dairy farmers, leading to reduced milk production, lower milk quality, delayed reproduction, and an increased risk of culling. By selecting females that are more resistant to mastitis through the Zoetis Mastitis trait, producers can achieve more profitable herds. Similarly, the Zoetis Lameness trait allows for the selection of females with greater resistance to both infectious and non-infectious forms of lameness, minimizing mobility issues that can negatively affect milk yield and overall herd performance. Zoetis Calf Wellness traits focus on improving calf livability, resistance to scours, and resistance to pneumonia, laying a strong foundation for the herd's long-term success. Given that replacement costs are a significant component of production expenses, reducing morbidity and mortality is essential for enhancing profitability and ensuring the future performance of the herd.

If you’re looking to utilize wellness traits to influence your profitability, 14JE2159 JX MULLIGAN {6} and 614JE2189 JX CERBERUS {6} are two genomic young sires who excel as wellness specialists. JX MULLIGAN {6} combines breed greats like CHROME, ACTION, and JX THRASHER into one pedigree. He is a superior health and wellness option that receives the Mastitis ResistantPRO designation at +$1036 DWP$, +$204 WT$ and 108 Z_ MAST. According to Marc Bolen, Jersey Sire Analyst, Select Sires Inc., “JX MULLIGAN is as balanced as they come in all aspects of production, type, and health traits. He delivers the rare combination of all positive fitness traits with his impressive HHP$, DWP$, WT$, and CW$.”

614JE2189 JX CERBERUS {6} is an outstanding production and health trait sire that traces back to the famous Circus cow family. As the No. 3 HHP$ (+$758 HHP$) young sire in our active lineup, longevity is what JX CERBERUS {6} can bring while still offering solid production (+879 PTAM) and functionality. Additionally, he delivers outstanding daughter fertility at +1.3 DPR, +3.3 HCR, and +2.6 CCR. At +6.1 PL and +15.2 JUI, his daughters will be long-lasting cows with beautiful udders.

By utilizing these outstanding genomic young sires and incorporating Zoetis Wellness traits into your genetic strategy, you can significantly enhance herd health, longevity, and profitability.

BROOKBORA BERT, our new Australian based sire, is soon to be released. Bert follows in the same mold, being 105 Fertility and 360 HWI. He offers balanced type at 112 and udders at 116, from two great cow families of the breed in the Charo’s and Daisy’s. Bert is bull that combines some of the great sires of the breed both top and bottom of the pedigree, with sires like Vanahlem, Valentino, Casino and Action we have some of the most and reliable sires combined with the powerful Charo family. He’s a bull that’s handmade to complement and continue the balance and fertility of bulls like Starlord.

ALTA'S REVIVED DOMESTIC JERSEY PROGRAM: MEET LIGHTNING RIDGE LION AND MORE!

It is with great pleasure to announce the commencement of Alta Genetics Australia’s Domestic Jersey Sire Program, following a significant time away from the market.

Our first of three acquisitions, Lightning Ridge LION hails from the famed Brookbora Love Lies cow family. Alta LION combines a BPI of 391, solid production and boasts great type OT +109 with outstanding udders Mamm +115. Technically the 2nd Best Udder bull in the breed.

His dam, by Chrome, classified VG86 as a two-year-old and was sold for a then-record $20,000 as an in-calf heifer. The next 4 Dams classification ranges from EX91 to EX95! This is a family that combines a perfect balance of production and type proving the test of time with validated longevity in the Brookbora herd. The maternal line boasts of broad ribbons, but it is the lactations to 7 and 8 years of age in the dams behind this bull that really tell the story. A history of cows sired by greats, Valentino, Vanahlem, Badger and Flower Power. All sires of incredible influence in the breed today. Add to it, the Sire of Alta LION himself, Cairnbrae Roulette, the current 4th highest Jersey bull in Active service.

Our second bull to debut in the Australian proofs is Ocean Acres LABYRINTH, who also comes from another branch of the Love Lies cow family that was vested at the high production Warrain Jersey herd. His dam, by Irwin, classified VG88 as a two-year-old and was at one time the #1 gBPI cow in Australia. The line of dams sired by T-bone, Spiritual, Jace and dating back through generations at Elenko all the way back to an original import from Jersey Island boasts one of the deepest known cow families in Australia. Alta LABRINTH, a son of Pickle, comes with a BPI of 383, OT+108, Mamm +109, adds milk and maintains positive components all the while presenting an extremely balanced linear profile.

The third bull to complete our domestic team comes from Kaarmona Jerseys, the Sprunt Family in Northern Victoria. Kaarmona Broadway IMPERIAL P debuts as Broadway’s highest-ranking son and the highest rated udder POLLED bull currently available at OT +110, Mamm +112. His cow family grabbed social media attention through his great grandam Caspian Impish and her son Impeccable as both members displayed enormous capacity, showcasing great width and strength. Alta IMPERIAL certainly doesn’t fall short bringing linears Stature 104, Chest Width 105 and Body Depth 105. The Impish cow family was one of the standout families from the Almervista Herd, in Gippsland upon its dispersal and brings an outcross maternal cow family to your breeding table being relatively new to the marketplace. When considering a polled option for your herd, we don’t believe there is a better bull available.

It would be remiss to not mention that Alta Genetics upon its most recent proof run grabbed attention with AltaFARVA, the current number one JPI genomic bull in the USA at JPI 206. New OUTCROSS sire Farva also debuts at a BPI of 403. Thus, making him our highest available BPI bull in the country with AltaFireOpal being higher at BPI 407 but no longer available. FARVA is a son of Progenesis Circle and out of the full sister to FireOpal. The cow family is bred down from Hi Land Jersey Farms, New York, the Chamberlain Family. Long time world Jersey bureau members and past presidents of USJersey. FARVA would complement our Australian based bloodlines very well being highly unrelated to most of the current bulls in use. Being able to break up the heavy influence of Valentino, Oliver P, Casino and Matt. When was the last time and what bull was the last to grace both the top 10 listings available at the same time under JPI and BPI upon debut?

Be a part of our emerging Jersey program as we too set to offer a great range of not only North American bulls, but Australian bloodlines, bringing Australian Jerseys to the global marketplace.

For more information or to submit any pedigrees of interest to our program, please reach out to Karin Couch, Alta Genetics Australia, National Jersey Program Manager.

CSCBRADY

CONSISTENT JERSEYS DELIVER FOR ALL WITH A TEAM WITHOUT JH1

ABSAustralia is proud to offer a complete lineup of Jersey sires without the JH1 haplotype that effect Jersey fertility. Farmers can come to ABS knowing that our complete offering is free from such an impacting condition.

This was a far too important decision for ABS to make to ensure farmers we not looking out when selecting their bull team. Over 25 percent of the Australian Jersey population now contain the haplotype.

The highly sought-after and continually impressive genomic bull Kaarmona Jeronimo Brady, CSCBRADY has delivered a consistent performance in this ABV release with 423 BPI and is equal number one for Type and four on ASI Production.

“CSCBRADY has been our most popular Jersey during the past four months with farmers wanting to take advantage of a balanced bull offered by Kaarmona, the only stud in Australian history with a Master Breeder award from two different breeds,” Bruce said.

“The highest ranked ABS Jersey genomic bull, farmers can purchase CSCBRADY with confidence and know he will deliver. It’s exciting to have this bull through our relationship

with Central Sires Co-Operative and from one of the best cow families in the country.”

For Jersey polled breeding programs, Balnageith JANGO - P is the highest heterozygous or ‘single-P’ genomic Jersey at 366 BPI, while Wallacedale VAST - P at 364 BPI offers high production and type while delivering 50 per cent of his progeny without horns.

Forest Glen Craze TRIPP rose to fourth on the ABV Jersey proven rankings at 313 BPI and 317 milking daughters. Performing well in Australian herds for production, high components, milk and 101 for Daughter Fertility, he’s still a popular choice for those wanting a sexed genetic product, according to Bruce.

For those wanting a son of TRIPP we now have the high BPI TRIPP son White Star TAVERN. He come from the Glennens herd and the dam is a Tahbilk daughter that is amongst a herd of 400 and is a no fuss EX90 classified cow.

CSCJAMIEO at 291 BPI is number six on the ABV proven Jersey rankings, proving consistency is key when it comes to bull selection.

AGRI-GENE’S SPRING HIGHLIGHTS

Agri-Gene Australian Jerseys had another outstanding proof run in the recent August ABVs.

With three of the top six Genomic BPI sires, the No.1 Fertility and HWI sire, a top three Daughter Proven BPI sire and the breeds No.2 Type sire, Agri-gene’s Jersey team continues to go from strength to strength.

Leading the way as our highest BPI sire is Roulette's son White Star TWOUP at +449 BPI, he has a wonderfully balanced proof that combines good production, positive components with excellent health and fertility traits and a type linear that is hard to fault. Twoup’s sire ROULETTE remains amongst the elite bulls in the breed. He is the highest Mammary & Type ranked sire over +400 BPI and excels in the USA, one of the few bulls over +2 PTAT and +17 for Udders with positive DPR.

Miami PICKEM rounds out our +400 BPI sires, he offers an outcross to Valentino lines with excellent Type & Fertility from the Empress cow family. Miami ELECTRIC is a new release sire for 2024 who is the Fertility game changer for the Jersey breed at +112 for Daughter Fertility. He is an A2A2 Craze son from the Elsie cow family at Miami that is backed by many generations of EX & VG cows.

Popular A2A2 polled sire BROADWAY - P remains among the breed's highest Type and Udder sire at +112 and +111. Finally, we are also pleased to introduce two new A2A2 Homozygous Polled sires MOJITO-PP and DONIER-PP.

SOUTH GIPPSLAND JERSEY BREEDERS CLUB

PRESIDENT: WAYNE KUHNE | SECRETARY: OLIVIA WATSON | TREASURER: ALEX MATHEWS

The South Gippsland Jersey Breeders club would like to congratulate Lisa Broad on being awarded a Life Membership with Jersey Australia. Lisa has been a very active and keen member of JA for many years.

As far back as Lisa can remember, she was always outside looking for something to do. If it wasn’t a calf she was dragging around on a lead, she’d be playing with kittens, puppies, chickens or attempting to ride their horse. Lisa has always had a great love for animals.

Lisa’s parents Jack and Beryl Mowat were involved with stud Jersey’s whilst on their farm at Bass in South Gippsland, their stud was named “Staxigo”. They become active with the South Gippsland Jersey cattle club when Lisa pestered them to start showing her calves. Lisa’s father was also involved with the Wonthaggi show society becoming a life member, they would always support the show by exhibiting cattle. That’s when Lisa’s passion for the Jersey breed, the people and the industry began.

The most influential cow family in Lisa’s parents' herd was the Bubbles family originating from the Elengrove herd of the Guthrey family in NSW. Lisa and her husband Lynton, still have the Bubbles family today in their Broadlin herd today.

In 1986 Lisa registered her first animal under her own stud prefix, the cows name was Echo Downs Noble Olive.

In 1995 & 1996 Lisa won back to back Supreme Champion at the Jersey Showcase with a cow she had bred Echo Downs Silver Bubbles, it was a dream come true for Lisa.

up until she moved to Northern Vic in 1992, helping with any event they had and becoming the publicity officer.

Lisa has memories of travelling with Keith Kuhne to attending Youth club meetings in Melbourne for Jersey Vic Branch before she had her license. Keith and Pat Kuhne were great mentors for Lisa during her early years as a Jersey breeder.

Lisa spent many days at Bushlea gaining knowledge on how to breed the good ones.

After moving to Northern Victoria, Lisa joined the Northern District Jersey Breeders club and after a few years she become secretary from 2006-2019.

Lisa joined the Jersey Australia Board in 2010.

Some of Lisa’s many memorable achievements include;

• Supreme Champion Great Southern OFC with Broadlin Constance 2565 in 2011

• Breeding AI Bull’s “AUSSIEGOLD” “HATMAN”, & “BROADWAY”

• Supreme Champion at IDW with Broadlin Illusion 2817 in 2015.

• Receiving recognition in the Genetics Australia Breeders Honors list in 2018

In the September of 2019 Lisa and her family decided to move back to the Bass Coast area, setting up their stud just out of Wonthaggi, Lisa rejoined the South Gippsland Jersey Breeders Club along with her Husband Lynton and son Gavin, they have been active members ever since.

STORMVIEW JERSEYS

Peter and Fran Langley, along with their 3 boys, Matt, Jack and Corey, own and operate Stormview Jerseys at Labertouche, in West Gippsland, Victoria.

Peter’s parents milked mostly Holsteins on a farm “at Nar Nar Goon North. Their first purchases of stud Jerseys came at Almer Vista Dispersal Sale of the York family in 2012. From then on cows were purchased at a series of sales and privately. Peter was working as a plumber and Fran was involved in the banking industry.

In 2016, Peter and Fran purchased 200 acres in Labertouche. The family herd was divided between Peter and his brother Robert. Robert, his wife Justine and their family remained on the family farm and have established Integrity Park Jerseys.

The first milking in October 2016 was of 80 cows. The family remained living at Nar Nar Goon North and travelled until October 2017 when the house on the farm was vacated by the previous owners. Numbers steadily increased and in April 2018, 190 acres next door was purchased.

Recently a nearby block of 106 acres has been secured for the young stock.

This year the herd has peaked at 310 cows, sending away over 1.8 million litres of milk. This has created the need to improve the milking shed with an upgrade to a 28 unit swingover dairy with stall gates, new milk line and pulsation. The work is still underway with one side currently completed. Two of the boys are heavily involved in the day to day management of the farm. Jack has been on the farm since he left school not long after the farm was purchased and Corey is working on the farm a couple of days a week.

Stormview Jerseys takes its name from Fran's horse stud. She is a super keen breeder of Welsh Ponies and is heavily involved in the administration of that breed.

Jack has recently taken responsibility for the breeding of the herd as well as any purchases from other studs. In recent years cattle have been bought from Cairnbrae, Warrain, Rockvale and Kings Vale Dispersal Sales to add to the herd. Recently 2 young cows were secured from the Brookbora Invitational Sale and 3 cows from Lerida Park.

Amy Wright has been engaged to advise on the genetic improvement of the herd. A focus on improving the udder attachments and the teat length in the herd is a top priority. Sexed semen on the better cows is part of the plan to speed up this improvement.

Jack says that classification and herd testing are on his to do list. Last year was their first venture into entering the Central Gippsland On Farm Challenge and also hosted the club for a farm walk. Over the past few years, the Langleys have become regular attendees at club events such as the Jersey Fair and heifer tours.

We at the central Gippsland Jersey Club are grateful to have them as members and will watch their progress with great interest.

PETER, FRAN AND JACK LANGLEY

INTERN’S RESEARCH CHALLENGE

Niamh Pilatti is helping Jersey Australia to embed the new classification system as part of her trail-blazing internship.

Not only is Niamh believed to be Jersey Australia’s first intern, she has taken on a pivotal role in developing the new class system.

Niamh is working from the JA office two days per week as an intern from July until October as part of her Master’s of Agricultural Science study, and is analysing data collected using the new system.

It’s a big responsibility for someone who grew up in the city with no farming background, but Niamh is fully embracing her time in agriculture.

Niamh, who previously completed her Bachelor of Agricultural Science at the University of Melbourne, thought working in agriculture would be interesting and it’s living up to her expectations.

“I don’t have an agricultural background but it was something I thought would be interesting to learn about,” she said. “Once I started my course, I got more and more interested in it and thought it was the right area for me to pursue.”

She was raised in Wattle Glen with no direct farming background but her grandparents grew up on small farms before they emigrated to Australia from Ireland and Italy, although they didn’t continue farming after moving to Australia.

Niamh has visited both countries and although the farms are no longer owned by the family, she was able to see from the outside where her grandparents once farmed.

Two years ago, she also got to spend some time with distant relatives on their dairy farm in Italy. “It was nice to have that connection and interesting to see how they run their farm and to share their farming lifestyle,” she said. “I’ve definitely got a bit of a soft spot for the dairy industry.”

While Niamh has been studying in the field, being directly involved in agriculture is another experience altogether. “It’s one thing to study it and learn from the literature, but once you see the farmers and their work and their passion that they have for what they do, you grow more of an appreciation for the industry.”

As part of her Master’s, Niamh needs to complete an internship subject and reached out to JA general manager Glen Barrett who asked her to help on the classification longevity project.

“Jersey Australia has collected data across Australia over the past few years using the new classification system and I’m analysing the data to see how the new classification system improves on the old one,” she said.

While it’s still early days, Niamh says she believes the new system is on track to achieve its aims.

“Initially with the old classification system, there were many cows classified with high final scores that were unsuccessful in meeting ideals on a linear level. This resulted in a lot of variation as to what makes a high scoring cow.

“For example, the old data shows how one cow can be meeting nearly all linear ideals, with another cow meeting some ideals but also falling substancially short in meeting others. However, these two cows both achieved the same high final score of 88.

“With the new system I have found that because they are starting the scoring process from the linear trait ideals level, there is already greater accuracy and consistency between what makes a high scoring cow. The new system ensures that the final score classifications are primarily dictated and supported by the linear trait data.”

Niamh is analysing the data that is used to calculate the final scores, across the four lactations. This includes linear and group trait scores, for each lactation. “Essentially, I am breaking down the final scores of these cows, to better understand how they are performing over their productive lifetime,” she said.

“From the linear perspective, these scores say a lot about the cow. You can really see why a cow is scoring what it is and identify the specific areas where the ideals are successfully met or not.

“It’s really interesting and there’s a lot of data to work through.”

The class longevity project started in 2020 scoring a cohort of 500 cows each year over four lactations.

LERIDA PARK JERSEYS TOP $11,500

The Complete Dispersal Sale of the Milking Herd and Spring calving Heifers of Lerida Park Jerseys on farm at Princetown met with strong competition from the large crowd and big online gallery for vendors Rhys and Lauren Smethurst. The Lerida Park herd is ranked #12 Nationally for gBPI and has been a Platinum Production herd for decades. The balance of high production and outstanding type was appreciated by all in attendance.

Sale top of $11,500 was paid for Lerida Park Raceway Sabina 78, recently classified EX91 (max score for a 3 year old). This wonderful uddered young cow completes 5 gens EX and was purchased by Smethurst Park Holsteins and now Jerseys of Athlone. Troy Smethurst (2nd cousin of the vendor) decided to take the opportunity of this dispersal to establish his Jersey section of the herd with the very best of many decades of selective breeding and keep the bloodlines in the family. Also among his purchases were Lerida Park Pilgrim Rose 419, EX93 and over 8,000 litres at $10,000.

Lerida Park Algernon Rosebud 504, EX91 (max) at $8,000, Lerida Park Malachi Rose 406, EX92 with 421 kgs fat at $7,500 and Lerida Park Valentino Countess 418, EX91, Lerida Park Aramac Sabina 71, EX91 and Lerida Park Chromes Sandy, EX90 all at $7,000 each. Indeed these selections will form a wonderful foundation for the Jersey section of what is already a tremendous herd of cows.

Third high seller at $9,250 was Lerida Park Tahbilk Lucy 182 EX92, 387 kgs fat selling to Corey Couch of Laang.

Progressive Breeders Cameron Thompson and his sister Lisa McKay teamed up to purchase the great young cow Lerida Park Stux Rose 424 EX90 at $9,000. Also at $9,000 was Lerida Park Malachi Countess 409 EX92, 8,460 litres selling to R Salter

The deep pedigree 6 year old Lerida Park Eclipse Selley 2 (ET) a daughter of Royal Show Champion Fleurieu Astound Selly EX93 also reached $9,000 selling to Couch and Ferrari Syndicate.
