2024 AGM WRAP UP

The AGM week commenced with the Brookbora 60th Anniversary Invitational Sale and what a fantastic way to commence the week with 74 lots of impeccable pedigreed cows and heifers on offer.

Our congratulations to all at Brookbora for putting on a fantastic sale in conjunction with 29 outside vendors. With a sale average of $7,670 and a top price of $30,000, cows sold across Australia and also to Canada. The sale was followed a great night of celebration on farm.

Wednesday saw us on the bus and headed off for a fantastic trip around the Northern Districts club members. First stop was to BENLOCK JERSEYS of the Rushton family where members had the opportunity to inspect a fantastic group of young cows before heading into Rochester for morning tea and the opportunity to take in the Rochester silo artwork before heading to ROYAL GREENS JERSEYS. Geoff and Yvette Brown had a great group of high component cows to inspect. Over lunch at the Lockington Football Club, we had the opportunity to conduct a members forum where the Board and Management fielded many questions from the membership relating to the Jersey Journal, Classification and the proposed dairy farm before we were back on the bus to CRAIGIELEA JERSEYS

Our thanks to the Cochrane Family for presenting another outstanding group of cows for the group to inspect before we headed back to Moama where we enjoyed a roast dinner and a great night of jersey cameradie.

Thursday morning had us back on the bus and heading first to WINDY WAYS JERSEYS and then onto GRAND DREAM JERSEYS. The Walsh Family firstly presented another outstanding group which was followed at the next farm of Todd Browns and members were not disappointed by the cows on offer.

The group had the pleasure of taking in a presentation of the ACM bio digester plant at Girgarre followed by a sumptuous lunch and a much needed walk around the botanical gardens before heading to JUGIONG

JERSEYS and our hosts the Nicholson family where members were greatly impressed by an outstanding group of cows on offer for our inspection.

Following a visit to the Great Aussie Beer Shed and Heritage Farm Museum members returned to the hotel to change before heading to Morrisons Winery for the Jersey Australia Annual Awards nights where we celebrated members achievements.

Special congratulations to Lisa Broad for receiving a well deserved Life Membership and two new Master Breeders in Geoff and Annie Heazlewood of MERSEYBANK JERSEYS and Paul and Lynette Lenehan of MURRAY BROOK JERSEYS.

Bill Cochrane and Pat Nicholson were both presented Distinguished Services Awards for their outstanding contributions to the Breed together with many other winners for the Great Australian Challenge, Jersey Elite Awards, Annual Production Awards and Stud 75 Year awards for EURARIE JERSEYS and 50 Years for CRAIGIELEA JERSEYS

On Friday morning we held the 2024 Annual General Meeting with over 50 members present both in person or online which was a great turnout. Lisa Broad was returned as President following the AGM with Geoff Akers and Jamie Drury Vice President and Treasurer respectively.

As the week wrapped and we all headed for home, members had a terrific week which, we thank our hosts the Northern Districts Jerseys Breeders club for their efforts and putting on a great week.

PRESIDENT LISA EARNS Life Membership

President Lisa Broad’s extensive contribution to Jersey Australia has been honoured with a life membership.

Lisa has made a life-long commitment to the Jersey breed and has been a Jersey Australia member since 1986, a Board member since 2010, Vice-president 201820 and President since 2021, chair of promotions 201216 and chair of genetics 2017 - 20.

Lisa has also given extensive service to Northern Districts Jersey Breeders Club in executive roles and was a Jersey Australia Classifier from 1995-2022.

The well-deserved life membership follows Lisa being named a Master Breeder in 2023 alongside her husband Lynton for their Broadlin Jersey Stud based at Wonthaggi in Victoria’s South Gippsland.

The award came as a surprise to Lisa, who admits she usually knows about such accolades but was kept in the dark this time by “the sneaky buggers”.

“I’m not a spotlight person but I do appreciate it,” she said.

“When you’re doing these things, you don’t recognise that people might appreciate what you do,” she said. “You don’t do it for personal recognition, you do it for the breed and the people that are going to come along after you, but being recognised like this makes it even more worthwhile.”

Lisa hopes her work that led to the recognition sets a good example for others wanting to become farmers.

“ When I started, there were a number of people who encouraged me to continue with my dream of being a dairy farmer, so I want to do the same thing to give other young people the opportunity to stay in the industry,” she said.

“I want to help keep it a place where people want to be involved.”

Lisa describes the people involved with Jersey Australia as her “extended family”.

“You can pick up the phone no matter where you are and they are there for you and it’s like you had coffee with them yesterday. They are a special group of people.”

Lisa added that she was forever grateful for her family’s support in allowing her time to fulfil the Jersey Australia duties.

Jersey Australia general manager Glen Barrett said the life membership accolade was “just recognition for an outstanding contribution to the breed”

“ Lisa is an outstanding leader and contributor to Jersey Australia as a member, classifier, and through her service to the Board over the past 14 years,” Glen said.

Lisa’s contribution shows no sign of wavering and she was re-elected as president at Jersey Australia’s Annual General Meeting.

BIGGER IS BETTER

Paul Lenehan has always stood out from the crowd when it comes to breeding Jerseys.

His cows have tended to beintentionally - bigger than the rest and his focus on strong production has paid off with Murray Brook Jerseys being added to the Jersey Australia Master Breeders honour board.

Paul and Lynette established Murray Brook in 2000, but Paul’s dairying career goes back to when he was just 14 and started milking full-time with his father Patrick. He’s still on the same farm at Crossley near Koroit in south-west Victoria.

“When I started, I used to go to sales and I wanted to buy a cow and Dad would say `we’ve got better bloody cows at home…what would you want to buy them for?”

“It was hard to change his ways.”

It turns out, they did indeed have good cows at home and Paul’s main focus has been to make them even better.

“I was always very keen on that side of things,” he said. “When the herd was registered in 2000, it was all home grown.”

At that time Paul had been breeding for 35 years and had kept all the records from when he took over the business.

“I had a history of all the cows on paper and I was getting more involved in A.I and mating programs,” he said. “Rosemary Roache did all the genetic recovery for the new stud. It’s easy these days but she had to research bits of paper back for 20 or 30 years to trace families. She put in a huge amount of time to do it but I was happy with it.”

Paul’s breeding goals haven’t changed much over time. “I love a balanced cow with high and wide rear udders so they fill up with milk,” he said.

A big-bodied cow is one of the features of his herd. “That is something from way back when I would buy bulls before the A.I days,” he said.

“I wanted a big-bodied cow with capacity to eat a lot of feed and produce a lot of milk and she had to have a good udder to carry that and to last in the herd for a long time.

“One of the main comments I get when people come here is about the size of the cattle.”

With two-year-old cows, Paul likes to grow them out to make sure they are a good size when they calve. “If they’re too small when they calve, you’re forever trying to catch up. One of the main aims these days is to grow out the young cattle with heifers coming in around the 450-kilo mark.”

The focus on quantity hasn’t hurt quality and the farm has achieved platinum awards every year since they were introduced and before that always managed gold.

The herd usually places around fifth or sixth on the national herd rankings and the cows produce a bit over 7,000 litres with 620-640 kg/Ms.

Murray Brook Jerseys has also contributed bulls to the A.I system, mostly from the old cow families that have been on the farm for generations.

The first bull submitted to A.I, about six years ago, was Shadow Man. “He is one of the reasons I have received this award,”

Paul said. “His sales were huge and he has had good daughters and has been very positive with his traits.

Murray Brook Jerseys has had a total of six bulls in A.I, including Jamieo, currently the number two proven bull in Australia, Motie, Bosa Khan, Motown and this year Sheehan was added to the catalogues.

Having a bull in A.I was one of Paul’s long-term ambitions, but he had to bide his time.

“I had mentioned to a few companies but they said I needed another generation or two but I won the On Farm challenge around 2013 - 14 and the judge worked with an A.I company and that got it started.”

Paul won the On Farm Great Southern Challenge the first year he entered in 2009 with a bought-in cow Noeda Mayfair 143, and returned to the winner’s podium in 2013 with three-year-old Murray Brook Annie 3660.

She was classified EX93, one of four cows to achieve that ranking alongside her daughter Murray Brook Annie 3908, Murray Brook Orchard 4022 and most recently Murray Brook Marie 4872.

“I haven’t showed, apart from the On Farm Challenge,” Paul said. “I’ve always been commercially focused but I like them to look good.”

The stud’s principal cow families include the Annie family, highlighted by the paid of EX93 cows, the Ash family which led to Shadow Man and continues to do well, and the Lyn family highlighted by Lyn 4058 and two sons in AI – Jamieo and Motown.

Of the cow families bought by Paul, Orchard, Hattie, Empress and Daisy have been strong.

“I mainly stick with my own families but in recent years had bought in a bit of a mixture,” Paul said.

He has been genomic testing since 2015 and the whole herd now is now tested. This has opened new export opportunities with 90 high-genomic

heifers being sold to HRM Dairies in Pakistan over the past two years.

In the early days, Paul used a lot of American genetics but now uses mostly Australian.

The farm traditionally used autumn calving but about 10 years ago went split calving on the suggestion of Paul’s son Adam. They did that until about four years ago when they reverted to autumn calving after Adam decided calving across the year wasn’t much fun.

For the past two years, cows that didn’t get in calf have been held over for spring calving and some were sold locally. “That worked really well; people are amazed at the production they can do,” Paul said.

Adam now runs the farm but Paul remains active in most parts of the business and has the reins of breeding, which remains his passion.

This year they started running a second dairy on their long and thin farm which has expanded over the years and is linked by a leased property.

A sharefarmer is set to start in July.

Paul previously received a Jersey Australia Distinguished Services Award recognising his six years on the Jersey Australia Board, including three years as treasurer, along with his broader contribution to his local club, the dairy industry and Jersey cows in particular.

He says the Master Breeder honour is much appreciated. “I’ve always been a commercial breeder. I went 35 years before being registered and I’m still a commercial breeder,” he said.

He also paid tribute to his consultant Amy Wright.

“Amy has been my consultant for about 25 years,” he said. “I was her first client and she’s still with me. A lot of where I’ve got to is due to her. From day one, she liked what I liked and knew what I wanted to breed.”

Paul, 72, and Lynette, who reared all the calves in years gone by, now live in Koroit but he still milks occasionally and goes to the farm every day and keeps a close eye on the breeding program.

SAGE ADVICE

Early in his breeding career, Geoff Heazelwood came across a saying that has always held him in good stead.

“Breed a cow that gives the greatest amount of milk over the longest period of time for the least trouble” was the maxim from stud breeder Reg Broad that resonated with Geoff more than 40- years ago and still rings true today.

“I always try to work to that,” he said. “You get fads and fancies on show animals but I’ve always tried to live to that maxim.”

Whatever the formula, it has worked and Geoff and Anne’s Merseybank stud from Tasmania has been added to the Jersey Australia Master Breeder honour board.

Merseybank was registered in 1954 by Anne’s grandparents and parents George and Pat Farrell (George was a former Jersey Australia federal president).

They are now milking 200 Jerseys on a 50 : 50 split between autumn and spring calving, with numbers being reduced slightly over recent years as they move into their 70s, though they have no plans to retire.

“I do it because I love it,” Geoff said.

Geoff and Anne took over the stud in 1980 and continue to farm at Latrobe in north-west Tasmania.

Like a lot of Australian farmers around that time, they relied heavily on New Zealand genetics and animals.

Later the genetic pool became more Australian-focused, with Merseybank finding particular success with bloodlines from Katandra in Victoria.

In the early 1990s the American influence started with bulls like A9 Top Brass, Lester, Brook and Beretta setting up much of Merseybank’s success.

More recently, Geoff and Anne have focused on Australian genetics. “From the experience of what we use; Australian genetics measure up for type and production as well as anything in the world,” Geoff said.

They’ve never bred for show success, but have achieved quite a bit along the way.

“If you get an odd show cow that comes along, well and good, but we’ve made money out of dairy cows by breeding dairy cows, not show cows,” Geoff said.

In the early 2000s they started their show career at a state dairy fair in Tasmania organised by the Holstein Society.

“They invited us to participate. It was all breeds in together – not separate breed classes,” Geoff recalled.

Holstein farmers were using professional fitters so Geoff decided to do the same and took up a recommendation to try Matthew Templeton who was only 16 at the time.

“He got our cows ready professionally and we came home with Supreme Exhibit with Merseybank Beretta Rosalie,” Geoff said.

Two years later, she repeated that success.

In 2005, Matt suggested they had a young cow good enough to take to International Dairy Week.

Geoff has been a regular visitor to IDW and although unsure about competing, decided to give it a try with Merseybank Fabulous Rondo

She won Intermediate Champion. However, it wasn’t easy. “The logistics of getting a cow to IDW and getting her back was a challenge,” Geoff said. “She went over okay on the ferry but coming back they got half-way across the strait and run into a very heavy swell and had to turn around and go back to Melbourne.

“There are a lot of things in shops in Melbourne but have you ever tried to find a bucket milker to milk a cow in Collins Street?” Geoff laughed.

She was eventually taken to Flemington Racecourse and hand milked, but the adventure was enough to stop a return. “We’ve been asked when are we going to show again at Dairy Week and the answer is always `been there; done that’.”

More recently they have concentrated in the Great Australian Challenge, including a winner in 2013 with Merseybank Eltons Claire. (pictured right)

For five successive years in the Great Southern Challenge, Merseybank Eltons Claire was either Champion or Reserve Champion; winning as a two and three-year-old, reserve as a fouryear-old, winning the five-year-old and was reserve again at six.

“She was a very good cow; no other cow has won for five successive years,” Geoff said.

Last year Merseybank was second to the overall champion in the Great Southern with Lemon Trickle.

“The Challenge is my form of showing nowadays,” Geoff said. “I like it because the cows are in their natural form.”

But it all comes back to production and Merseybank excels in that field. Last year the farm was again classed as a platinum herd for being at the top level for production and has jumped between gold and platinum status for many years.

The farm has been in Anne’s family – the Bonneys - for five generations, with its history tracing back more than 150 years. It is one of the oldest continuous farms in the area and covers 56 hectares of river flats bounded by the town on one side and the Mersey River on the other.

Geoff describes their breeding program as “fairly relaxed”. “We don’t A.I our heifers aggressively like some farms do. Because we only have a small farm, our heifers are away on an agistment run-off block and we tend to use a bull on them. We A.I. for six weeks in autumn and spring and then use a bull as a clean-up.”

Geoff either buys a bull on the mainland – and has had very good success with bulls from Brookbora and last year from the Rivendell herd – or uses a good A.I son out of one of their own cow families. “We’ve had very good success with home-bred bulls as well as those purchased from outside,” he said.

“I’ve always loved looking at pedigrees and catalogues… not bad for a bloke who failed genetics at ag college!”

Merseybank names cow families by letter.

The biggest families include the N family which originated from a Noela heifer bought in 1980 from Murray Moloney’s stud at Tongala in Victoria.

“She was a cow that lived to 15 years and bred a few daughters that were very longlived and gave us a lot of heifers,” Geoff said.

One of the best families at the moment is the R family originally from Anne’s father. “He sold a heifer to Kevin Hill, a breeder in Tasmania, and we lost the family, but we bought a daughter from Kevin when he dispersed his herd and we re-started the R family,” Geoff said.

“The daughter we sold topped his herd every year so we thought we’d like to get it back.

The third biggest family is C, sourced from breeder Lionel Bonde who had the Skelbrook herd which goes back to a lot of Bemersyde cows.

Overall, there are about 15 different families in the herd.

Merseybank has had bulls in A.I programs, most successfully with CR Voyant, but haven’t actively marketed bulls in recent years.

But Geoff and Anne do like to share their success. “One of the highlights for me is that we have sold lines of heifers to young farmers that have started their own studs and been quite successful,” he said.

Now 71, Geoff is the “last man standing” among his old-school Tasmanian farming friends. “All my friends over here are saying they’re retiring from dairying and asking me when I’m going to stop. I have a couple of employees who do most of the farm work for me but as far as the milking and breeding is concerned, I very much love that and would be rather lost if I didn’t do it.”

The Master Breeder recognition is much appreciated.

“I feel very humble about it,” Geoff said. “All the initial inductees are breeders I very much respect. You don’t expect it, I do value it.”

Geoff and Anne will share the honour with friends at the Jersey Australia AGM. “One of the best things about farming is the friends and people I’ve met all over Australia, especially when I was on the classification team for a few years.

“You can go anywhere in Australia and talk cows.”

Dairymaid EX95

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE RECOGNISED

Two Jersey stalwarts, Bill Cochrane and Pat Nicholson, have been presented with Distinguished Service Awards to recognise their long and dedicated service.

Both Bill and Pat farm in northern Victoria and have been key drivers of the Jersey breed in the region and beyond.

Bill has served on the Jersey Victoria Board and as a classifier and class tour coordinator for many years.

He has been an outstanding servant to the Northern District Jersey Breeders Club, including 10 years as president and taking on other executive roles, ensuring the club’s continued activity and success even when numbers were low. He was also a key driver of the Northern Lights sale and has judged many shows and on-farm challenges.

Pat, who runs Jugiong Jerseys with his brother Brendon at Girgarre, has also been a great servant to the Northern District Jersey Breeders Club as well as Jersey Australia as a classifier and on the genetics committee and show ring ethics committee.

Pat is a current member of the Genetics and Breed Development Sub Committee and current JA representative on the All Breeds Show Ring Ethics Committee.

He also renowned as an experienced judge at many of Australia’s premier and local shows and on-farm challenges and as a mentor of upcoming judges. Pat also looks to the future and has been a great mentor of young people entering the dairy industry.

In his acceptance speech, Pat said he was thankful for the mentors who had supported him when he was young and he wanted to do the same for the next generation.

President Lisa Broad said both Bill and Pat deserved their recognition and had been great supporters of the breed and their fellow farmers.

“Bill is a bit of a quiet achiever but has been a real ‘do-er’,” she said. “If you want something done, contact Bill and he will get it done.”

Lisa said Bill had been particularly loyal to his local region. “While he didn’t necessarily take on bigger roles across the broader Jersey world, Bill has been instrumental in keeping the northern area ticking over the years, even when they were facing low member numbers.”

Lisa said Pat had also been dedicated to his home region and beyond, particularly in supporting young people.

“ We thank Pat for his efforts, especially in supporting the youth. A big part of his award recognises what he has given back to the industry through his support of young people.”

The awards were presented at the 2024 Awards Night in Moama.

100 YEARS OF PAISLEY JERSEYS MemberProfile

The foundation of Paisley Jerseys says a lot about how the industry has progressed over the past century.

Stud principal Alan Clyne’s grandfather James started the Paisley stud but getting the cows was quite a saga.

“Cousins of ours were milking and selling a few cows at the Greenvale farm at Tinamba West and they bought a big line of Jersey heifers from near Bega,” Alan said.

There were up to 100 heifers but there were no semi-trailers to move them in those days.

“They walked them down to Orbost and then put them on the train,” Alan said. “That’s what you did in those days.”

The Bega-Orbost walk – about 240kmwould have been challenging but the heifers were worth it.

“They were going to turn them over and sell them again but they ended up keeping them because they were milking that well,” Alan said.

“They found they were superior to what they were milking – old Hereford-shorthorn cross cows that weren’t very much to write home about.”

James bought stud cows in 1923 and then started registering pedigree calves. In 1924 there were two herds of 70-80 mixed breed cows at Upper Maffra West, with a sharefarm family on the second farm.

He built it up to become one of the largest Jersey herds in Victoria in the late 1920's - early 30's.

“He converted an old barn for milking and built a beautiful set of bull yards… he never did things by half measure,” Alan said. Adding to the importance of the herd, a government tester used to

come by train from Melbourne to test the cows every month.

James died in 1933 and Alan’s father Alick and his brother Gordon carried it on, with Gordon taking the prominent role in breeding.

When World War II broke out, they had to disperse the pedigree cows into the other sharefarm herds because of the labour situation.

“It wasn’t as easy to manage the pedigree cows because they were scattered over three farms, which was a pity,” Alan said.

In 1954, when he was just 9, Alan started getting interested in the herd. “I was mad keen on cows, especially Jersey cows,” he said. “We were milking 15-20 cows at Hillside Farm at Tinamba West and I used to go around the mobs of springing heifers at the back of our house and find the stud ones. I’d pester dad to milk them at our place. We started registering them again after the society had deferred registrations during the war.”

Alan left school at 14 in 1959 and started doing the stud work. “I showed my first heifer at the Maffra Show when I was 11,” he said. “It was always Jerseys. There was a history to them and that gave me the interest and I wanted to keep the registrations going. We ended up with a full stud herd of 70-80 cows by 1970.”

In 1960 he started buying a few show heifers, including some from Sutton Grange in central Victoria and in 1963 took his first cows to the Gippsland Jersey Fair, coming home with Champion three-year old Silvanella Dulcie 14.

The following year she was Reserve Champion as the Royal Melbourne Show.

“I thought I was made but we didn’t stop there,” Alan said.

Paisley Jerseys showed at Melbourne until 1976, achieving Reserve Champion again in 1968 with Paisley Benita 2 and in 1973 and 1974 took home the Champion Jersey and All Breeds titles with Lightview Princess 4.

“To get champion cow two years in a row was a real highlight,” he said.

Alan paid tribute to Trevor Onley who had joined the team in the early 1960's. “He was great at showing and farm work and as a general stockman and shared with us in presenting the show teams,” he said.

But the success couldn’t continue.

“My father died in 1972 which meant I was looking after four or five dairy farms and all the stud work and I got married and had five children,” he said. “We had a great run in the show business but we had to put attention on getting more milk out of our Jersey cows.

“I’m not saying show cows don’t work but we bought some more land, had five kids and it takes time to manage large herds and we needed decent milking cows.”

The stud herd was centred around the Hillside farm at Tinamba West from 1954 to 74 but they stepped back from showing in the late 1970s while concentrating on building production (and keeping all records).

At the time Alan was a bit critical of the Jersey bulls. “They weren’t coming up with a wide enough span of genetics,” he said.

He joined a syndicate to bring in genetics from America, becoming one of the leading drivers in introducing American genetics to Australian herds. The syndicate found success and influence with Dillon, Duncan and Sooner, whom he describes as the best of the three.

Some of Paisley’s bulls also made the A.I. scene, particularly Paisley Gist.

These days, Paisley continues to use a lot of overseas genetics but also adds Australian proven into the mix.

He is pleased he resumed herd registration. “Herd testing and recording came a long way because of the computer age,” he said. “We’d be struggling without that.”

Alan’s sons Alister and James are now leading the stud as fourth generation farmers, both milking more than 1,000 cows in mixed herds at Tinamba West and Upper Maffra West, the original farm settled by Alan’s grandfather.

As he nears 80, Alan has retired to Maffra, allowing his sons run their businesses. But he retains a great interest in the cows and is proud of the influence they have had as the foundation of many successful herds across the country.

“We had some Jersey sales in the 1960's and 70's and then in the 80's and 90's in conjunction with another herd,” he said.

“We had a very good cow emerge out of those that won a championship at Sydney, Paisley Benita F14. The owner flushed her a lot and they make thousands when they get sold.”

He remains particularly fond of the Emma and Princess families bred by the stud. “The cows got split up during the war times and my uncle started milking a house cow again - an Emma because it was his favourite cow family.

“The Emma cows have a beautiful temperament,” he said.

Alan has always bred for an open frame. “The milkiest cows are always open framed with plenty of oomph in them,” he said.

Alan is happy the family has stuck with Jerseys. “We’ve been breeding with Jerseys for 100 years and we’ve still got them. The boys are averaging around 600 kg/Ms with a mixed herd so that’s got to be good. The Jerseys have stood the test of time.”

In the past winter Alister has built a large shed with 16 robots milking up to 1200 cows. James milks on the old family farm where Paisley started, milking more than 1,000 cows in a rotary dairy.

Jersey Australia president Lisa Broad said Alan and Paisley Jerseys had always been innovative and leaders in the breed.

“In the 1980s, Alan was one of the first breeders in Australia to use imported American semen on his herd,” Lisa said.

“They were before their time and progressive with their thoughts and it led to them having stock that everyone wanted.”

Lisa added that some of the first bulls Paisley put into A.I were extensively used in both registered and commercial sectors and had a long-term impact on the breed.

“They have created prominent cow families still in the breed today,” she said. “The forward-thinking decisions they made back then has enabled the genetics to stay in the forefront

ABV UPDATE: WORLD WIDE SIRES

7JE001726 STARLORD is in a league of his own!

He is a Craze son from a deep maternal line of Very Good cows with great production bred by the Ahlem Farms Partnership in Hilmar, California, USA. He offers balanced production with great daughter fertility and excellent mastitis resistance. His daughters are great uddered cows that get better with every lactation. They have plenty of dairyness with the combination of strength to grow into problem-free cows.

According to Marc Bolen, Jersey Sire Analyst, Select Sires, Inc. “As he adds daughters globally, it is easy to see that no matter the market, traditional grazing or commercial, his JUI is holding true. He delivers uniform, shallow udders with a deep crease, and height and width of rear udder, with adequate strength and width throughout.”

Now with more than 15 classified daughters in Australia, STARLORD is stamping them the same way he did in the USA. 401 BPI, 107 Daughter fertility, 107 type and 110 Mammary system with 107 Likeability.

Farmers milking STARLORD daughters absolutely love them. Trevor Saunders and Anthea Day of Araluen Park Jerseys, Shady Creek, Victoria had this to say: “We liked the overall balance of Starlord’s proof when he was first released as a young sire. This has proven correct, with the added bonus of excellent semen fertility and conception rates. His daughters are clean-boned medium-sized cows with superb udders, good component percentages and excellent health traits. Our earliest daughters have calved back in on their second lactation and are maintaining this balanced type and production.”

For the Type enthusiasts, 7JE02120 BIG RED comes from an EX-93 dam, Suess Lexicon Rhonda, who was the 2nd senior 2-year-old at the International Jersey Show in 2014. BIG RED has a great strength to stature ratio and will make the fancy kind, being one of the few selected for Select Sires’ Showcase line up, siring balanced cows with great udders. At 21.2 JUI, BIG RED will sire daughters with high and wide rear udders, strong fore udders and correct rear teat placement. BIG RED checks even more boxes, being an outcross sire with the preferred casein combination -- A2A2 and BB.

19-YEAR-OLD PLACES FIRST BULL IN A.I MARKET

At just 19, Holly Anderson might be the youngest Australian cattle breeder to have a bull placed in the artificial insemination system.

Empire Banks P has been picked up by Genetics Australia and is expected to have semen available from this spring.

While Holly’s Empire Jerseys stud is relatively new, she hails from a family that has been producing top-quality Jerseys for decades.

Holly’s parents Rob and Kerrie operate Kings Ville Jerseys, which has sold 28 bulls into A.I and was last year named one of Jersey Australia’s inaugural master breeders. Kings Ville was started in 1987 by Rob with the support of his parents, Bert and Winsome, who established Kings View Jerseys in 1961.

Holly was keen to go one step further and came up with the name Empire to reign over the Kingdom.

“I always joked with Dad whenever one of my cows had a girl that my empire was growing and that’s how Empire Jerseys was created,” Holly said.

“ My family has Kings in their stud names, I still wanted my stud to be connected with them but to be separate at the same time.”

Holly says there is some friendly rivalry within the family – and she beat her dad who was 24 when he sold his first bull to A.I – but she acknowledges their support.

“I must be close to being the youngest to get a bull into A.I,” Holly said. “I’m happy to get that goal ticked off and hopefully I’ll get more in the future, but I’m very thankful to Mum and Dad because it wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for them.”

Holly’s journey to A.I breeding success started when she was 12 and got to take her pick of any heifer in the calf shed, an offer that was extended to her older sisters Em and Meg.

“I chose Archer Belle, she had Matt Belle, the dam of Empire Banks,” Holly said. “I didn’t base it off what she looked like; I chose her because she had the highest BPI in the calf shed. It was a case of mind over heart.”

In 2021, Holly started Empire Jerseys and in 2023 she started full-time work on the farm. She now has full control over what bulls she uses. “Because I’m relatively new to the game, when it comes to my breeding objectives, I aim for polled as well as creating more efficient and productive cows.

“When Matt Belle was born and I saw that she had ideal numbers being the highest BPI jersey heifer in Australia, it gave me the hope that one day she would put a bull into AI. When I looked at the number of bulls Mum and Dad had sent into A.I, getting my own bull in the system definitely became a goal of mine.

“When Matt Belle had her first son, he was just a couple short on BPI which taught me the value of genomics, the challenges that come with a changing criteria base and to focus on important reliant traits for the jersey breed. I was fortunate enough for Matt Belle to have another son. Banks. When his genomics arrived, it was an exciting moment and I thought he had a good chance.”

“I’m a bit biased due to the strong relationship I have created with Banks but I do hope he goes on to do well.”

While Belles are the main family within Empire Jerseys, the budding stud also boasts Banks, Melmiss and Eran among others, including several Fernleafs she owns by herself as well as co-owns with her sisters. “I’d love to get a bull from the Fernleaf family into AI,” Holly added.

“I’ve got a real soft spot for Jerseys due to being a fifth-generation dairy farmer,” she said.

“I see the Jersey cow playing a big part into the sustainable future due to their size and production and can see Australian Jersey genetics going very far around the world.”

Holly has embraced the industry and is vice-president of Gippsland Dairy Youth Group. “I enjoy organising events and helping to encourage the next generation,” she said. “It’s important to have a supported environment and build relationships with like-minded people.”

Genetics Australia CEO Anthony Shelly said no-one on the GA team could recall a younger breeder supplying a bull to the team.

“ It’s exciting news for the Jersey breed, not only have enthused youth but to have Holly leading the way,” Mr Shelly said.

“No doubt she has been mentored by some strong family influences, yet Holly has still had the vision and passion to create her own herd and breeding program. We are proud to be associated with such an inspirational young achiever and look forward to many more Empire bulls joining the Genetics Australia team.”

Empire Banks P is a particularly well-balanced bull with BPIg $342, and an excellent production profile with strong kilos and components along with appealing health traits, Survival +110, Cell Count +134, Mastitis Resistance +105, combined with linear scores that excel for strength and udders.
