Welcome to our spring season of events at the Opera House. Take your seat for the screenings from the Grand Metropolitan of New York – we have Puccini’s Tosca with its story of love, terror and the longing for freedom and La Bohème with an exciting young cast in Franco Zeffrelli’s legendary production.
STUDIO We begin the season in the studio with Skein – a collaboration between four artists, a dancer, two visual artists and a visual and sound artist. Rhodri Miles stars as Dylan Thomas in Clown in the Moon, the title of a poem written by Mr Thomas when he was 14 portraying the poet’s chaotic, frequently hilarious and all too brief life. Patrick Monahan returns with his new venture Rewind Selector 90s – an exploration of what life was like for teenagers growing up in the 90s.
SPACES FOR HIRE Another use of this wonderful venue is by hiring it for performances, conferences and even weddings! The beautiful Edwardian horseshoe style auditorium has been carefully restored to recreate the ambience and appeal of
the original 1900s theatre, whilst The Studio has a sprung wooden dance floor, mirrored wall, theatre lighting and black surround drapes (see one use for the studio illustrated below). It is a multifunctional, interchangeable space available for small-scale performances, dance and exercise classes, workshops, and corporate events.
MEET THE TEAM
MONIKA KSIAZEK ADMINISTRATOR & HR OFFICER
Administrator and HR Officer, Monika Ksiazek, tests out the sprung floor in the studio whilst rehearsing for her ballet exams.
We have some great shows for children. During half-term Barking Dog return with their new show Teddy’s Seaside Holiday and The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Be entranced by the Mischief and Mysteries in Moomin Valley from the Lost and Found Theatre Company. Jay Foreman, the award winning musical comedian, performs his new show Disgusting Songs for Revolting Children.
Steeped in history, dating back to 1865 when Henry Cornwall created his Royal Amphitheatre and Circus, to its reincarnation as Theatre Royal in 1868, and the grand re-opening as the Opera House in 1900 with Jersey’s very own Lillie Langtry, there is much to see and learn about this wonderful building.
I am sure you will find something that you like and I very much look forward to seeing you at the Opera House.
During Easter we will be introducing guided tours of the Opera House including Front of House and Backstage, and all the nooks and crannies, followed by Afternoon Tea in the OH CafeBar!

An experimental performance uniting sound and movement, skin and cloth. Skein explores the boundaries of subjectivity through both the individual and collective experience of the body and the dynamic and physical experiences of these relationships, questioning the idea of skin as a boundary which separates us from the world and from others. Skein is being developed as part of a collaboration between four artists: dancer Alys Hughes, visual artists Karen Le Roy Harris and Miriam Sedacca, and visual and sound artist Lola de la Mata.

The poor country boy Nemorino is in love with Adina, a confident landowner, but she is way out of his league—financially and otherwise. But when he buys a “love potion” from a travelling quack, the results are rather more than he bargained for.
Rising South African soprano Pretty Yende is the spirited Adina, Davide Luciano makes his Met debut as the arrogant soldier Belcore, and Ildebrando D’Arcangelo is the potionpeddling Doctor Dulcamara. Domingo Hindoyan conducts.
Charmingly staged by Bartlett Sher, Donizetti’s beloved masterpiece combines deft comic timing with touching emotional depth. The production stars Matthew Polenzani, who enthralled Met audiences as Nemorino in 2013 with his moving “Una furtiva lagrima.”

Against the backdrop of the Hanging Gardens, Semiramide, Queen of Babylon, defies bad omens and supernatural threats in her quest to find a worthy successor to her late husband. But she harbours more than one dark secret and whoever gains the throne may find that he has lost more than he has won. Based on a story by Voltaire, this rarely performed tragic opera reveals The Barber of Seville composer Giaochino Rossini in a whole new light. The title role— composed for Rossini’s wife, Isabella

Inspired by Handel’s profound religious masterpiece, this acclaimed Bristol Old Vic production provides a rare chance to experience a powerfully dramatic account of Messiah and to rediscover the intense spirituality of its many well-known arias and choruses. Staged by the Tony Award-winning director Tome Morris (War Horse), this extraordinary production features Europe’s most celebrated baroque orchestra The English Concert, the magnificent Erebus Ensemble and a cast of internationally renowned soloists. The story explores the drama and struggle of faith, showing a group of people whose grief at the loss of their
leader is transformed into hope through a narrative of resurrection. Through their despair, the Apostles gradually realise their mission is to redeem the world by sharing the story of Jesus’s life and death with all humanity.

Pretending to leave with their regiment, they return in disguise and pay court to each other’s lover. Will the young women succumb to the charms of these two handsome ‘foreigners’? A co-production with English National Opera, this clever vision of the battle of the sexes is set in a carnivalesque environment inspired by 1950s Coney Island. James Levine and Plácido Domingo add yet another chapter to their legendary Met collaboration with this rarely performed Verdi gem, a heartwrenching tragedy based on Friedrich Schiller’s novel Intrigue and Love. The young maiden Luisa loves Rodolfo, unaware that he is actually the son of the local lord. An unscrupulous rival for her affections tells her father of Rodolfo’s true identity, turning the old man against him. Jealousy, suspicion, and betrayal tear the lovers apart, but Luisa remains loyal to her father to the last. In the first Met performances
of the opera in more than ten years, Sonya Yoncheva sings the title role opposite Piotr Beczała as Rodolfo, with Domingo as Luisa’s stern-yetloving father.

With judges verdicts ranging from “a fantastic surprise”, to “full of heavenly delights” and “The falling petals had more grace.” Richard is enjoying the whole experience hugely despite admitting to some massive collywobbles as he prepared for his dramatic first entrance from high above the dance floor. In this ever popular evening alongside his Strictly reminiscences he’ll tell a story that is as real as it is unlikely. He
connects the euphoria and mayhem of being Top of The Pops in the 80s to his present circumstances as Church of England priest, radio broadcaster and television show panelist answering amongst many burning questions, ‘How do you go from pop star to priest? And why?”

A fairy godmother, a glass slipper, an opulent ball, an enchanted forest, and a Prince Charming who loves her—did all that really happen, or was it just a dream? Long-suffering Cendrillon lives a life of drudgery with her good-natured father and his imperious wife, until fate, romance, and a touch of fairy magic intervene. For the first time ever, Massenet’s sumptuous version of the Cinderella story comes to the Met in this imaginative storybook production directed by Laurent Pelly. Superstar Joyce DiDonato sings the title role,
alongside British mezzo-soprano Alice Coote in the trouser role of Prince Charming, Kathleen Kim as the Fairy Godmother, and Stephanie Blythe as the archetypal wicked stepmother.

Monahan explores what life was like for teenagers in the 90s growing up with basic technology, unlike teenagers today who are growing up with technology that’s more powerful than a NASA space ship in the 1960s! He compares the current problems teenagers face, such as faulty phone charger leads,
