phase 1

PROJECT: This project is about “in-between spaces and was inspired by the location of the site between the ocean and the mountains. The intent was to create a defined place within this context.

The primary gesture is made with two site walls that organize the other components. The walls flank the site and create a sheltered and defined courtyard in between. The southern wall is taller and it raises the master suite and the living spaces to take advantage of panoramic views from sunrise over the mountains to sunset over the ocean. The northern wall organizes the guest suites as a series of pavilions. The brief called for the house to be built in five separate phases, so the concept was to establish a group of structures that carry a dialogue with each other as each additional phase is added.

PROJECT 1: Construct See right for description

PROJECT 2: Innovatrium Insitute for developing flavors and fragrances. Located in the banal suburban sprawl of Dundee, MI this project aspires to become an interruption to an otherwise one-sided conversation. Dundee Michigan is the home of the outdoor recreation retailer-Cabela’s. As the only feature in Dundee, Cabela’s has total domination over the town. My proposal begins to challenge and propel the role of the [private] building to create a new image of Dundee and possibly give rise to a new condition between Cabela’s vs. Innovatrium.

CONSTRUCT Based on a given image-a flower in this case-we were asked to analyze the image and produce an object with a dimensional constraint of 13″x13″x37″. My object developed out of a methodology of distorting the image graphically while retaining some characteristics of the original (i.e. tone). There is a focus on developing a methodology and approaching the work in a way that is more of an interpretive exploration than representative. This idea of something that is simultaneously what it is and what is was and those two things being different led to a strategy for production. As this process evolved from something two dimensional to something with volumetric and structural requirements a number of issues and new relationships emerged using this method of distortion. I worked with craft paper and through a process of deformation through molding over forms, began to explore the issues of memory, recognition, and enhancement in relation to a material. These ideas were all tied together in the process of making something from a material that is flat, rolled, and flimsy and making it something rigid and having depth and now representing a distorted image of what was through its deformation.

Palisades West DUDA PAINE ARCHITECTS DEV: COUSINS PROPERTIES EXEC: KENDAL/HEATON AUSTIN, TEXAS AUG 2006-JAN 2007 PROJECT: Located on a

sloped site overlooking downtown Austin, this twobuilding campus includes a 210,000 sf headquaters facility for a major financial institution, as well as a 160,000 sf commercial office building for other tenants. The two are linked by an adjoining 1,400-car parking structure that is carved into the sloped site and covered by a landscaped garden.

RESPONSIBILTIES: Primarily

responsible for the garage, connections to the two buildings and the lobby spaces. A major component of the early phases was convincing the client of the unsealed travertine curtainwall system, which we constructed a full-scale mockup of to successfully make our case. This project was also a special opportunity to work with James Turrell in the design of a lighting installation in the lobby of building one. This included a full day, closed door workshop and plenty of anecdotes to go around.
